This isn't the type of news I like to write or pass along, but I have to because it's my job.
Linebacker Brandon Marti, a member of UM's 2008 signing class, was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of battery and false imprisonment related to domestic violence. A police report has not been made available yet, so details are unknown.
Marti, 18, didn't play last season and was suspended while playing on the practice squad according to UM spokesman Kerwin Lonzo. He told me Marti was told after this past season he was no longer a member of the team.
But I spoke to Marti's older brother moments ago who told me Marti was in a trial period with the team and had been working out with players this week. Either way, this definitely signals the end of his Canes career. Marti was an All-Dade linebacker at Miami Gulliver Prep.
Although I'm sure everyone is going to jump on this story and start saying Thug U all over again, Marti's arrest is the first for a Canes player since former quarterback Robert Marve punched in a car window on Halloween 2007. Only two current or former Canes that we know of have been arrested since Randy Shannon was named coach.
> PS, I'll have plenty more for you from today's press conference with new defensive coordinator John Lovett and interviews with players Jason Fox, Sean Spence and Matt Bosher.

Manny,
There were 100's of rumors that this kid was a head case(drugs, fights, etc etc etc) before he even got to Miami. I remember the Canesport meesageboards being on fire when this kid committed bc LOTS of people were saying this kid was nothing but a trouble maker.
Posted by: TeeDraper | February 12, 2009 at 04:26 PM
Always sad when these kids can't keep their head straight, especially when on a probationary period (ala Rios) and being given another chance. Good luck to ya buddy. If true, take that $hit somewhere else. Hope U learn from this. Zero tolerance now at the U, as opposed to some other programs.

MANNY AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED IF IT TAKES THE FOCUS OFF THE GAME WE DONT NEED IT. SEE YA WILLY WILLIAMS WAS ALOT BIGGER NAME AND WE DIDN'T HESITATE.

Sad, talent and no brains.

Also, he was kicked out of 2 high schools.

RS are you listening? Say BYE BYE TO BRYCE BEFORE THIS KID HURTS THE PROGRAM
Posted by: dccane | February 12, 2009 at 04:39 PM
I hate to say this but I will. Miami needs a few thugs on the team. bring that kid back hahahaha. Just kidding!!! We do need that thug attitude on the field though.

Well said CaliCanesFan," Thug attitude on the field = Sean Spence"
Scholar athlete in class and the community. THUG on the field!!!
It's a CANE thing!

That's the spirit... good luck to Marti. Very few gets the gifts and chances you have gotten. Regroup and make your way to being a good citizen. What is wasteful is the couple of hundred thou you threw away in excellent education.
No more begging BB as well. If he comes, then prepare to compete. No excuses, just hard work and no lip.
I think James and Lamar spooked him.
Posted by: Pinoycane | February 12, 2009 at 05:22 PM
Glad Coach Shannon cut him loose. He wasn't a CANE when he got arrested. I know people say once a Cane always a Cane, but dude never got on the field & never graduated. So I don't consider this a strike against the school. Coach Shannon attempted to help this kid, then realized the kid didn't want to conform, so he cut bait. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!

Hmmmm...
Wonder if this false imprisonment will become kidnapping? Stay tuned!
Too many fish in the sea for ONE to get to you like this. Also see Chris Brown!
Posted by: 360Cane | February 12, 2009 at 05:56 PM
I never really considered him part of the team really. I never saw him suit up for a game once. He had problems when he came to Miami. Those problems kept him from seeing the field last season and now those problems will keep him from ever seeing the field at Miami. It's a sad story, but I'm glad he's not on the team.
Posted by: David (Clearwater, Fl) | February 12, 2009 at 06:03 PM
Marti can still starte over, someone will give him a shot, If he gets his head straight.
Posted by: dlu | February 12, 2009 at 06:10 PM
It completely bamboozles me that a kid with the chance to at very least get a 4 year ed froma prestigipus Univ. blows his life away with crap like this. What a complete moron. His parents must share part of the blame. I mena look at the kid. Good looking kid, trying to get all regaggd out. Kid, you are a cubiche, be proud, what are the dreads fer? that dont give you street cred. on the contrary it makes you look silly.
By the way, The days of Rohan Marley are Ovah!
Posted by: jaime | February 12, 2009 at 06:26 PM
Sad to hear the news Manny. Forget football, I hope Marti can get his life together, move on and get his degree somewhere.
Posted by: Windy1 | February 12, 2009 at 06:46 PM
Perfect fit for Thug-U. Why release him??? Try to straighten him out and don't give up on him. The U just find a way to recruits thugs.
Posted by: ThugUliveson | February 12, 2009 at 06:54 PM
I love how whenever a cane gets into trouble (which is basically every other month, suddenly "he was never really a cane anyways."
Rigghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttt...
Like I've said before - the only thing that surprises me these days is when a cane is NOT in trouble. THUG U 4 LYFE right guys?

yep
Did you read the blog idiot? This is the only the 2nd arrest of a FORMER Miami player in coach Shannon's tenure. Here is something from CollegeFootballTalk.com:
The College Football Talk 2008-09 Turd Watch season began on August 15, 2008. Teams “earn” seven points for a felony arrest or conviction and three points for a misdemeanor arrest or conviction. Standings are below.
Florida 14
Notre Dame 9
Virginia 9
Virginia Tech 9
Cal 7
Kansas State 7
USC 7
West Virginia 6
East Carolina 6
Penn State 6
Georgia 6
Toledo 6
Florida State 6
Arizona 3
Iowa 3
Illinois 3
Michigan 3
Texas 3
Wisconsin 3
Miami with now 2 doesn't even qualify on this list stupid. Notice the Gayturds are #1 on this list. Talk about "thug U"!
Posted by: CaliCanesFan | February 12, 2009 at 07:13 PM
Not at all, this kid was one of ours. If we can cheer for them when they do great, we can offer a kind word when they get into trouble. Hope he gets things figured out...it's still early in the game.
Posted by: Canesjunkie | February 12, 2009 at 07:17 PM
Kids ... kids ... kids.
Was it yesterday the Poll game out with the top 25 problem programs?
Lead by none other that the Gray-turds with 14 points. And FSU was in the top 10 with 7 points.
It seems to me that UF has held the role of THUG U for years now. Let's see - a defensive tackle a year or two ago holding his girl hostage at gun point - yea they're really clean aren't they?
Posted by: Canes32 | February 12, 2009 at 07:21 PM
Yea that's it - thanks CaliCanesFan.
Posted by: Canes32 | February 12, 2009 at 07:22 PM
I went to Gulliver for a year in 9th grade (absolutely hated it) and I remember seeing this jack*ss once, when I guess he was visiting to see if he could transfer there. I could tell just from two minutes around the guy he was a cocky *sshole. I transferred to Gables High for 10th grade last year, so I never saw the guy again, but all I have to say is GOOD RIDDANCE.
(By the way - no disrespect to Sean Taylor, I know he was a Gulliver grad. Even a sh*thole like Gulliver can produce an all-time great like Sean every once in a while.)
Posted by: Cane Mutiny | February 12, 2009 at 07:23 PM
Excuse me while I call BS on this.
MIAMI has had two arrest since then which at BEST would put you at 6 points and if both turn out to be felonies (which they probably will) will put "DUHHH U" tied for FIRST PLACE with UF.
Put nice try at claiming it was "2" incident but not assigning points.
Posted by: yep | February 12, 2009 at 07:24 PM
If this dude and the basketball idiot turn out to be felonies, Miami ties for the Lead Thug School with 14 points.
Right now, you are looking at TOP 8 Thug Schools if they are the minimum misdemeanor.
:)
Posted by: yep | February 12, 2009 at 07:27 PM
The 2 that I was speaking of is there have been 2 players charged with anything and the other is Robert "cry baby" Marve. His was not a felony you moron!! You gayturds are all the same. Glad to see that you released you mouth off of Teblow's jock to post something though. Enjoy your little run "yep", once Teblow goes to the CFL (where all the gimmic players go anyway), we'll have full reign over the nation.
Canes Nation Baby!!
Posted by: CaliCanesFan | February 12, 2009 at 07:31 PM
I glad you finally realize that UM has enough points to be in the TOP 8 THUG schools.
Or you still denying that?
"Miami with now 2 doesn't even qualify on this list stupid."
NOT ONLY do you qualify, you will probably take the lead. Who's stupid now?
Posted by: yep | February 12, 2009 at 07:35 PM
yep
You really are a moron. These concern football players, thus the list by collegeFOOTBALLtalk.com. Not college everysport.com.
STUPID!!
I'm done with you.
Posted by: CaliCanesFan | February 12, 2009 at 07:36 PM
oh excussssssse me.
One arrested football player, one arrested basketball player...for a total of possible 7 points.
MUCH BETTER NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT.
Posted by: yep | February 12, 2009 at 07:52 PM
yeeeep
im a uf/um grad/grad school, uf is a hillbilly bunch of fools who have nothing better to do than put down other schools who have kicked there @#$ for years get a life and join your own teams post. gainsville is so far out you have nothing else to do. why dont you post on uga or ut site, oh ut will be rulling the sec soon. kiffin is going to take over your overrated conf. things change and your short time at the top is coming to an end when your qb leaves on his mission
Posted by: earl | February 12, 2009 at 09:16 PM
YEP - must have that dead girls credit card. Talk about thug U. It's always nice when a University of Felon talks trash on this board. Yep.
Posted by: canewreck | February 12, 2009 at 09:53 PM
Why does the Miami Herald post an article about this loser? Who cares about him.. It completely makes UM look bad but he had nothing to do with the University other than that he was recruited by us..
Posted by: MiamiMike | February 13, 2009 at 11:25 AM
There are two kinds of thugs: those who go to UM, and those who were recruited by UM but for some reason chose to go elsewhere. They're all 'Canes at heart. Shut Miami down.
Posted by: Trevor | February 13, 2009 at 12:33 PM
Well, I see the Thug U (apparently mainly Gator morons) are out again. People like "Trevor" and "yep" are soooo pathetic in their little hate-filled world. Guess what? You can pour out all your hatred of The U that you want...it merely confirms what a bunch of obsessed, self righteous a**holes you really are...and certainly no credit to any other school you supposedly support. Do any of you dare to say what school is "yours"?
Posted by: mighigancane | February 13, 2009 at 01:30 PM
why should this be considered an arrest by a miami hurricane player. he was kicked off the team in decemeber. he never saw the field and was barely a cane at all.
Posted by: andymo | February 13, 2009 at 02:39 PM
have to give the gators 1 positive note...... they prodce some good girls that give a great bj.....lol....hahahahaha..... as for their football program it is garbage and look what happened with greg reid.... urban cryer kept crying and reid was like i am out .... 1 more year before gainesville is completely wiped out in the state and miami will rule till the end of time randy shannon is on the right path.......
Posted by: shivam | February 13, 2009 at 06:20 PM
THIS IS A SAD CASE B UT ANYTIME YOU'RE DEALING WITH A LOT OF YOUTHS THESE TYPE THINGS WILL SURFACE. MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI IS A CLASS ACT AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE SO WITH COACH RANDY SHANNON WHO IS A NO NONSENSE DISCIPLINARIAN. THIS CASE REMINDS ME OF A VERY GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO WENT TO A COLLEGE OUT OF STATE. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET THIS YOUNG MAN AND MINISTER TO HIM. I REALLY FEEL THIS WAS A GOOD MAN IN HEART, HOWEVER THIS YOUNG MAN GOT WITH THE WRONG CROWD AND WOUND UP LOSING EVERYTHING. THE SAD THING IS THE QUARTERBACK WHO THREW TO HIM IN COLLEGE WOUND UP BEING DRAFTED AND MADE MILLIONS. THIS YOUNG MAN WITH HIS TALENT I HAVE NO DOUBT WOULD HAVE MADE MILLIONS, BUT HE LOST OUT. THE GOOD THING IS I HEARD FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOW HIM AND HE IS NOW WORKING AND IS TURNING HIS LIFE AROUND, HOWEVER HIS FOOTBALL C AREER IS OVER. REMEMBER. OPPORTUNITY ALWAYS COMES, BUT TRUE OPPORTUNITY COMES ONLY ONCE AND WHAT WE DO WITH THAT OPPORTUNITY: DETERMINES WHAT WE BECOME. ECCLESIASTES 3:22

SAM SHIELDS MOVING TO CORNERBACK
Receiver Sam Shields, who has had an up and down career on the offensive side of the ball for three seasons, will be moving to defense when spring practice begins later this month.
CaneSport has confirmed that Shields will be moving to cornerback at the start of spring practice, a spot where the Hurricanes need depth and help. The hope is that Shields can develop rapidly at that position during spring practice and, with a full off-season of work, can be a big factor in the secondary when the season begins in August. If he is not ready, Shields has never been redshirted and would be a candidate to redshirt if Miami finds that it is solid enough on special teams to live without him this season. But that will be a late August decision.
Shields has a chance to develop into a good corner because he has shown great aggressiveness and tackling skills on special teams.
Miami has an obvious numbers situation at receiver and the move gives Shield a chance to develop at a position where he might have a better shot of playing in the NFL.
Shields finished last season with only 11 catches for 124 yards, making his biggest impact on special teams as the team's best flier. He had a couple of major mental gaffes, including a 15-yard penalty for coming too close to a punt returner and another penalty for running onto the field when his personnel group had not been called that was a critical moment in the loss to Florida State.
Shields had 27 catches for 346 yards as a sophomore, a season that included a suspension. As a freshman he had 37 receptions for 501 yards and four touchdowns.
He has started 12 games in his career at wide receiver.
Shields was one of the nation's top receiver recruits coming out of Sarasota Booker High School. His senior year there he had 67 receptions for 1,201 yards and 22 touchdons.
With sub-4.3 second speed, he has thus far not lived up to his potential at Miami. But with his natural athletic ability and Miami's needs at cornerback, Shields' fortunes could turn around quickly on defense.
