Spring Buzz-O-Meter: No. 22 tops list

CORAL GABLES -- One of the best things about this spring has been the amount of access coach Randy Shannon has given us -- the media. Each day I've been out there, I've had a chance to catch up with a group I like to refer to as the U's Veteran Watch Committee, a group of about four or five older gentlemen who have probably seen just about every Canes' football practice for the last gazillion years.

I don't want to shed any light on their identities because it might endanger their safety. But take my word for it, there might not be better sources when it comes to the development and comparison of Canes players beyond the coaching staff than these guys. After all, they've been there just about every day for every practice. How special are they? Coach Randy Shannon usually walks off the field with them, sharing laughs and whatever thoughts might cross their minds.

I have to admit, I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with UVWC this spring. Not only are they die-hard green and orange bleeders who wear their colors proudly to every practice, but they're realistic too. They don't jump on the bandwagon with one-hit wonders. To impress the UVWC you not only have to show it every day in practice, but you got to do it when there are zebras on the field.

With that in mind and with the spring game on tap this Saturday at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium, I went to the UVWC earlier this week to gauge their thoughts on The Top 5 newcomers/new position guys who have really stood out this spring and created real buzz and hope about their future. We shared notes (NOTE: When you talk with the UVWC, you don't refer to players by name. You refer to their jersey numbers) and these are the players the UVWC feels most excited about. This should certainly help you if you will be attending the team's final scrimmage on Saturday.

1. (No. 22) Mike James, running back: He's not only become the media's favorite, but left tackle Jason Fox's as well. Mr. Fox provided the most glowing quotes about James to date this spring after Wednesday's practice.

Mike James' smile wasn't the only thing creating a buzz at this year's spring practices. "I honestly think he’s a really special guy," Fox said. "He’s probably my favorite incoming freshman so far. What I like most about him is he’s a hard worker and he studies a lot. We were going through some stuff the other day and he was coaching the other guys out there in blitzes and protections. He’s a smart guy. Every time I see him before practice I see him in his playbook. Before practice today he was just looking through his playbook. He’s just a dedicated guy. When you can get a few guys like that, that’s what it takes to win.

"He’s a hard runner too. I’m not going to compare him to Baby J and Coop. But he’ll make a tough run, bang out 10 yards or something and he’ll be the first one back in the huddle. He’s just an explosive guy, runs tough, runs with his pads low. It’s hard to believe he’s just a freshman. He’s a very coachable guy. Whenever you talk to him all he wants to do is get better. Whether its an older player or coach, he’s always there wanting to be coached and wanting to get better."

The UVWC agrees. Although they aren't ready to dub the 215-pound, 5-11-inch inch freshman (he's shorter than 5-11) the next great one, they say few Hurricanes backs have possessed his abilities to run between the tackles and power over guys the way he does. To be honest, James doesn't remind me of any Canes before him at all. He actually reminds me of a Gator who wore the same number (22) and did some amazing things with the Dallas Cowboys.

2. (No. 7) Vaughn Telemaque, safety: Truth be told, there probably isn't going to be a newcomer who makes a bigger impact than VT, who among the players in this group will likely be the only one who starts against Florida State on Sept. 7. Telemaque has natural ballhawk abilities which have drawn comparisons from coach Randy Shannon to former Canes great Ed Reed. The UVWC expects him to make an immediate impact because not only does VT not shy away from making big hits on running backs, but he's very good at getting a hand in to bat balls away from receivers at the last second. According to the UVWC, he's kind of a hybrid of Sean Taylor and Ed Reed.

3. (No. 86) Tommy Streeter, receiver: The UVWC loves Streeter's size (6-5, 200). But what they love even more are those long legs and speed (4.4), which he uses to jet past shorter corners and safeties with ease. What Streeter adds to an already loaded receiving corps is the ability to go deep and have a player who catch the ball at its highest point so often he makes it look easy. Like I told the UVWC, expect Streeter to become the great deep threat Lance Leggett never did.

4. (No. 83) Kendall Thompkins, receiver: Another receiver who was redshirted last year, but one who has certainly caught the eye of the UVWC. Thompkins, I've been told by his former offensive coaches at Miami Northwestern, was the clear-cut best route runner on his team (one that included Aldarius Johnson and Streeter). Earlier this week, cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke said the 5-11, 170-pound redshirt freshman is kind of like a Roscoe Parrish. The UVWC and I disagree. Think more of a Sinorice Moss.

5. (No. 35) Olivier Vernon, defensive end: There's probably a good chance Vernon doesn't play much this coming season because of the amount of depth at the position. But they like what they see in the 6-2, 250-pound true freshman in terms of work ethic and pass rushing ability. If Vernon stays healthy, I think he could end up becoming what Eric Moncur was supposed to be.

Strong out of the gate... Lame at the finish... Well that should change in '09 huh ???

U have bigger problems than to worry about who Florida is playing...

U Cane Geniuses need to get the GATORS out of Ur head and try to focus on WINNING more than just ONE National Title the past 18 and counting years...

Can't we all just get abong ?

Don't try to tell cane fan that they are hypocrites 21st. It's beyond their comprehension. You will notice that there are SIGNATURE blowouts on those losses. Those are not the things that upward momentum programs are made of.

Virginia 07

GT 08

It's amusing that cane fans spent went on and on and on about UF. Someone is in their head.

The whole "were coming back" and "U R scared" notion is just good comedy. They've been hanging their hat on that nonsense for years now.

They assert that its cyclical and UF will soon be "done" and UM will soon "be back." What this COMPLETELY fails to recognize is that while one University has an enormous commitment to being at the top, another University has stripped down their program.

( OB wrecking ball, unqualified coaches hired from within, inability to keep quality coaches they do get, laughable strength and conditioning program and coaching staff resulting in ZERO player development, dwindling fair weather fan base)

There is really nothing that makes a strong case that UM is "coming back." Since joining the ACC and the coinciding tear down by Donna, this program has shown what it is now. A very average program that has to look very hard to find a quality win. They have posted a few impressive wins but nothing that makes a statement. The badly eroded program has featured some HISTORICALLY embarrassing losses.

They aren't just in a "down time" as they foolishly think. They are BADLY eroded TOP TO BOTTOM.

They just can't look at the program. All they can do is look at UM from a team standpoint.

The most GLARING sign of the program wide erosion is that they haven't even sniffed the ACC championship after 5 years in that average conference. Don't try to tell me the ACC is a top conference. IT"S NOT ! Not ONE SINGLE NC has come from it. They are in past glory denial in a huge way.

Kirby needs to make our schedule as interesting as possible to generte revenue. This is a business; why waste opportunities playing tune up games.

I'd like to see us play USC, would be a great series. We've already added Ohio St and Nebraska. ND will probably come around and play us. We should add LSU where we wanted the Gainesville team.

hat is where football is headed. Just read the comments of your fellow DaU N houston above. He doesn't credit the spread for multiple high yardage backs but it SURE DOESN"T HURT. You MUST have excellent execution and team blocking for the spread to work. Most teams can't put it together.

A friend of mine talked a bunch of smack When Meyer arrived in Gainesville. He's say,"yeah we'll see how Meyers spread chicken wing offense does against the physical SEC defenses." I mentioned that to him recently and his response was, " I was wrong. That team was flat out awesome." That team EXECUTES. Flat out.

I don't care if they have their long snapper putting up those numbers. Those numbers correlate to touchdowns which correlate to wins which ultimately correlated into the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Spare me the gimmick nonsense. There is nothing gimmicky about that crystal TROPHY that just got delivered.

Posted by: The Curse of Art Kehoe | March 26, 2009 at 03:33 PM

Which correlates to your entire program producing a bunch of p*ssies that play in the Arena League instead of the NFL, you f*cking clown.

Don't try to tell me the ACC is a top conference. IT"S NOT ! Not ONE SINGLE NC has come from it. They are in past glory denial in a huge way.

Posted by: It's not the team performance, it's the PROGRAM performance | March 27, 2009 at 09:11 AM

Not one single NC has come from the ACC, huh? Last time I checked FSU was in the ACC, you f*cking brain-dead, jack@ss. Why don't you learn about the simple history of college football, like past National Champions, before you open your ignorant mouth again and make yourself look even dumber? You st*pid f*ck.

What makes U think either team wants to travel cross country ? How did that Nut Bowl expedition work out for U? It's not as easy as saying "we need to play this team" and waving a magic wand like U think it is. U are not a draw anymore anyway so forget about it.

USC doesn't care about crossing the country to play an ACC also-ran. They'll schedule a Big 10 or Big 12 or SEC team LONG before they look for a series 3,000 miles away with a has been. They know that UM doesn't even get national exposure anymore. That was the old days. U struggle to get on ESPNU now. Cane fans spent many games last year searching for internet feeds for their games. Searching in vein for your game on a non working internet feed is a sure sign of EROSION.

Your program v. team arguement is working against your point. The 1987 Miami Hurricanes were one of the most dominant teams in college football. The Miami program at that time was in complete disarray. You seem to know a lot about the Canes...how many scandals did we have going on then? How well did the coaching staff get along with the administration? How were we perceived in the public then?

Our head coach was gone after another season and replaced with an alcoholic who let things sprial even further out of control. The team won the 1989 and 1991 NC's. The program had atheletes taking Pell Grant money to buy cars and stereos.

The 2001 team wins and NC, but hires a coach who would eventually screw up the recruiting ties and momentum we had over the next 3 years.

The 2007 team wins 5 games and misses a bowl. We upgrade to new stadium and bring on an AD who has experience raising money. We hit on 2 great recruiting classes, got experience for most of our underclassmen, solidified the coaching staff, and avoided scandals. Miami-Dade county is loaded with talent in 2009 and we're ready to pounce.

I wouldn't switch our the future of our program for an other.

21st century,

Try and get the gaytors out of our heads, is that why your on a miami blog U dumb idiot. Oh and we won a NC in this century, so go f urself, or tebow, however U guys do it up there. go canes

Just have TWO words for Duh U ...

TOMMY TUBERVILLE

And then, still just maybe .

GREAT POINT CANESJUNKIE

great so u totally avoid what i said and come up with tommy tuberville, U really are a dumb idiot. Sucks knowing your team has never been undefeated in a season and have been scared to play us for 25 yrs, playing every once in a blue moon or when forced in a bowl game

I wouldn't switch our the future of our program for an other.

U should seriously stop drinking Ur breakfast...

U guys are just too entertaining for words .

I mean seriously, do U fans ever take off Ur blinders long enough to actually comprehend what U are talking about ?

U enjoy Ur 1-3 start and 6-7 finish ...

upgraded the stadium? The polyvinyl ring of honor is a cruel joke but U keep rocking that upgrade nonsense. Even your own fans readily admit the it's a terrible venue. ONe big giant emotionless warehouse. Millions of people living close by and you can't even get 40k in there without FSU. (UF PACKED the place beyond full, largest crowd EVER there , that HAS TO PAIN U) Tailagating at Dolphin stadium is no much different than cooking burgers at CB Smith Park .....snore.

My bad on forgetting FSU"s ship from '93 and '99. They feasted on recruiting when UF and UM were on probation and have since shriveled. OKAY, FSU's ten year old championship makes the ACC a bonifide contender...NOT . I was wrong, whatever, hang your sorry ACC hat on that fool.

Solidified the coaching staff? YOUR COACHING STAFF IS A F"IN CAROUSEL.

Donna CLEANED house and sent Kehoe packing and CLEARED out the unchecked and rampant steroid use and where are U Now? Small, slow, weak. Or are you going to try to tell me that U produced 987 1st rounders with protein shakes and good weight room habits? Credit to Randy for running a clean program. Big props there. He knows Donna will execute him for anything less.

I see now...we hire Tommy Tuberville. So hire a coach who can recruit, but can't win. Stockpile talent, hire a coach who can actually coach...he comes in and wins with the previous coach's talent. Were have a read this recipe before??? Oh yeah...Zook to Meyer.

So according to you we are right on schedule for a couple of NC's?

So why should we be upset when we read your blogs? Personally, I like having you on here. It means you're concerned about the team.

You not only proved that you know nothing about College Football...but you also proved that you are a f*Cking loser that continues to post under different names to make it seem that people agree with your nonsense. You are a pathetic, sorry, piece of crap, that comes on a Hurricane site all day, every day.

Show up on Saturday and talk all of your crap at the scrimmage. I guarantee you won't say a word, you coward.

The hell with Teblow getting injured. Just test that moron for performing enhanching drugs. That kats dome is HUGE. Face facts your man crush is a drug addict!!!!

Zook to Meyer? Interesting point.

The difference being Gator fans roundly disliked Zook. Everyone knew he was over his head. Cane fans refuse to accept that Randy is completely unqualified , at least you are admitting that Randy can't coach. It's rare to see cane fan realize that.

AND....there isn't a snowballs chance in hell that Tubs will ever come to the U. Your only hope is to find a young guy that is unproven that can cut his teeth at the U. That's all U can afford. No top coach is coming to Miami..sorry. Your last two searches came up embarrassingly short leaving U no choice but to hire unqualified guys from within. Meyer came to UF partly because he knows you can win there. U can't win at the U with those academic standards and playing on the cheap. Coaches know this. Everyone of them that you would truly want has given U the kibosh. Dream on about Tubs.

Kee Hole,
Enormous fan base, huge dollars rolling in, continual stadium additions, giant NATIONAL tv audience, top AD in the nation, top 5 coach nationwide, a NATIONAL recruiting base and supposedly "football machine".

With all this why wasn't a gator voted into this year’s NFL Pro Bowl. How many gators will be drafted into the NFL this year….after 2 NC?
"redneck alley" knows their days are numbered with the U's return to greatness.

"Show up on Saturday and talk all of your crap at the scrimmage. I guarantee you won't say a word, you coward."

Why would I want to join 5,000 U fans at that s h i t hole Lockhart to watch that? Thanks for the invite internet TOUGH GUY, but I already have plans to join 50,000+ fans in April in Gainesville. The game will be wild fun since we'll get to see the best defense in the nation on display but the REAL fun will be seeing the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP sign unveiled on the PERMANENT ring of honor. The ring of honor is running out of space...seriously.

I like how Kehoe signs in as two different people, and then has conversations with himself about how bad Um is, on a UM blog!

Has there ever been a bigger loser anywhere on the web?? Let me answer my own question (just like Kehoe does!) NO!

How small can your penis be to be this angry Kehoe??

Surely there must be a girl somewhere that you can kiss? Lower your standards a little (or a lot if you have to!)!

You never know, she may let you touch one of her breasts, and then your off to the races! Dinner, a movie, then...PREMATURE EJACULATION! You know you're right, you should probably wait until a girl "picks" you!

Anyway did you see that UM moved up to #2 in baseball?? Oh, that's right, baseball is not a sport! At least not until UF "arrives"! It seems to me that UF sold out the 3 game stand against UM, but UF could care less about baseball, right?

The entire sports landscape change 4 years ago, and UM missed the boat????? Funny how we always set the clock to strengthen our arguments. Uf is the greatest team over the last 4 years, UM is the greatest team over the last 25!

UM is also the greatest football program in the Florida State History!

The UM FSU game in '87 was the most talent rich game ever played, based on the # of players that went on to the NFL.

The 1999-2002 UM teams are considered one of the greatest teams to ever play the game, repeat, TO EVER PLAY THE GAME!

Who's had more enjoyment over the last 25 years? UM!

You seem incapable of enjoying your own teams success! Your new obsession is the elusive "un-defeated" season! Keep waiting, the 2009 Gaytors are not going to deliver that crown this year! How many probation officers will have to sign off before UF will be allowed to leave town for an away game!

And don't get me started about "The Promise" plaque! HOW GAY IS THAT??? Let me answer that for you, REALLY GAY! Did Tebow die or something? You cannot create folklore, FOOL!

Go 'canes!

great so u totally avoid what i said and come up with tommy tuberville, U really are a dumb idiot. Sucks knowing your team has never been undefeated in a season and have been scared to play us for 25 yrs, playing every once in a blue moon or when forced in a bowl game

Conversing with U is like putting a leash on a dog ...

U heel now ... U Sit ... Now speak ... Good Boy .

is this all of the jealousy coming out from the gaytors not having beaten the U for 25 yrs only recently beating us when wev been down, or is it the angre u get from watching football on sundays and seeing a cane on every team but 5, n not noticing ne gaytor making ne plays?

If Tebow gets hurt for ant reason who is your back up?

Posted by: Wayne Ritchie | March 27, 2009 at 10:13 AM

Ohhh the hits just keep on coming ...

U need to look in a mirror and ask Urself the same question about Ur Balser wood Q.B. #12 .

U get back to playing with Ur "ANT" farm and don't worry about HE15MAN .

btw- Ur better off sticking to 1 cent comments .

What makes U think either team wants to travel cross country ? How did that Nut Bowl expedition work out for U? It's not as easy as saying "we need to play this team" and waving a magic wand like U think it is. U are not a draw anymore anyway so forget about it.

Um really? So how come we've gone out west to play at Arizona, UCLA, and Washington? Us with our "small" budget can pull it off but you guys with your big bankroll can't get out of the southeast? Give me a break. You want to play the game, you find a way to make it happen. Anyone. Anywhere. Anytime.

And are you serious with the exposure thing? First of all, we've been a part of three of the top five college football broadcasts ever including last year's top broadcast. Your stadium's attendance record was broken when WE came up to play you. We also broke the attendance record at OU when we went up in '07. I think we might have set the record last year at College Station too, but I'm not sure about that one. You want to go back a little further, we have the record in Happy Valley ('01) and South Bend ('88). And these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Even when we're down, we're still one of the biggest draws in the country and get nationally broadcast games because when we're on, people watch. Love us, hate us, people tune in to see what's up. It's why ESPN is producing a documentary about us. Hell it's why you're on here! Don't come with that b.s..

The answer is YES ...

When the Canes are only being broadcasted on ESPN 360 ... Right ?

Paranoia self destroy U

Come on U guys stop answering me, us, them, they ... It's starting to hurt

Obviously reading comprehension is not your strong suit. The point of showing up is not to watch anything, it is to see if you open your cowardly mouth the way you do behind a computer. And do show up on Saturday, so you can drop the "Internet" off my Internet Tough Guy nickname.

By the way, Ring of Honor? LOL...Honoring who exactly. The many great players you produce that I can count on one hand? LOL...what a joke.

That's it !!! Stop Pllllease.. I think I just broke a rib...

ESPU & 360 ='s ???

When a Team breaks a home attendance record U do relize that 95% of the 90,000 plus crowd are REAL HOME fans of REAL college programs ... Something that never happened at the O.B. Dust Bowl and will never happen at Dolphin Stadium... That is unless of course when The Gators fill it again in 4 years for another stadium record breaking crowd for yet another NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP... Like last year...

OK OK I gotta go take a big steamy UMmmmm .... It was real fun playing with U mental midgets.

No U can go

They're all yours Kehoe...

I like licking Sebastian's balls.

Give the psycho 5 minutes to sign as a different name and agree with himself. lol...What a maniac.

Dude, get your facts straight. 3 ESPN games and 2 ABC games (that I know of). That's at least 5 national games coming off a 5-7 season. Name me one other team that pulls that off. And was UF not the school that had to have a game on PPV because no one would carry it?

Obviously the mental midget here is you because you completely missed my point and in fact strengthened my argument. I know most of the fans are from the home team numbnuts. That's precicely my point. More people (fans from the other team) come out to watch US than anyone else! Who said anything about our fans traveling?

Go find a way to beat FAU, clown.

WE BALLIN BOYZ!!!!!

UF can have their chicken sh*t gimmick trick play offense and they can re-write the record books with the #'s they get. THAT MEANS NOTHING. It will never translate into NFL success and when the DC's catch up to this style of offense, it will flame out just like Nebraska's option. Schools like UF and Neb have a history of producing "great" college players that tank in the NFL when they are asked to learn a real system. Let those fools have their time in the sun but make no mistake, THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS OWNED BY MIAMI.

Reliable reports out of Lexington that Kentucky will fire Billy Gillispie later tonite and already have a verbal agreement with Florida coach Billy Donovan to become the Wildcats new head man... Details to be worked out by weekends end...

Can U hear that toilet flushing Gaytuds?

chris cane: that was a real post good stuff

WHOA,WHOA,WHOA. what is up with the love from UF FANS? STEAMER did U just type that the canes need to stop worrying about UF? have you lost your damn mind boy? on second thought don't answer that, like CANESJUNKIE said i would keep the 25 years of dominance then have a 3 to 4 year run beeing on top. kehoe no UM fan cares about UF, congrats U won something whoop dee doo. we are only interested in the U thats it, all this other bull that you're talking u can put it back in ya mouth.AND STEAMER WHY ARE U NOT ANSWERING MY QUESTION ABOUT CORVIN LAMB OR MARK WHIPPLE? IM PRETTY SURE U REMEMBER YOUR OUTRAGEOUS CLIAMS.

"USC doesn't care about crossing the country to play an ACC also-ran. They'll schedule a Big 10 or Big 12 or SEC team LONG before they look for a series 3,000 miles away with a has been."

If USC doesn't care, then why did they travel to Charlottesville, VA?

Please don't refer to Vaughn Telemaque as "VT". There is only one VT...and that's Virginia Tech. Remember them? That's the team that has owned the U the past few years. That's the team with young talent that is making a name for itself on the field rather than through BS recruiting rankings. That's the team that wins BCS Bowls and ACC Championships while gearing up for a run at this years national title.

For all the hype about the U, you need to start focusing on the Kings of the ACC and the only legit national title contender in the conference: Virginia Tech

This is all good, but everything boils down to the offensive line - if they can block and open holes for the running backs then it will be a good year for Coop and both James'...can't wait to see what Miller can do. The O-line is also the key to our passing, game...if they can give Jacory time to throw our receivers will get open and it will be like old times at the U. The jury is still out on our O-line and there is not alot of time left to improve this spring...let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

i like the meaningless bullcrap that the gator fans are trying to come up with to convince themselves of their groundless claims that we're done for. they post our records from the past 3 years, which show clear improvement. they say we lean on the past for reassurance when they lean on it to bash us. college football isnt about the past or the future. its about right now, and right now, i like what i read about the team. we've got leadership, we've got talent, and we've got coaches. and i love the schedule. i love the big games. i admit, saying uf plays nobody was extreme, but i mean having that many panzie games in one year is really unimpressive. plus they miss playing alabama and ole miss, probably the two other best programs in the sec right now. still though, lsu could be a trap game. they looked really good at the end of last year and brought in a whole bunch of great players. and theyre playing in baton rouge. idk whatever. i know we'll have a good year and i can't wait for the season. sooo tired of watching basketball (i hope cuse takes it all though)

Don't forget that James wears Coach Shannon's number as well.

Are you kiddin me? Va. Tech is here now? You say you own us?

You forgot to say, "in the standings" on that one. On the field I believe we got you last year with our freshman class making plays and putting us in a position to go to the ACC champ game. Owned us............too funny.

What, in God's name, does that have to do with anything in the world?

I bet Vaughn Telemaque get a National Championship before the entire Virginia Tech program does.

Vaughn Telemaque gets a Nationial Championship before Virginia Tech does. That's gonna be a fact.
