Spring game thoughts

FORT LAUDERDALE -- It's hard to really measure this spring game since I came away feeling like we only saw about 25 percent of UM's playbook, and about half of the expected starters were kept out with injuries. That being said, Eye On The U will still provide you with what we learned from Saturday's spring game, who impressed, who didn't and what was said after it was over.

GAME BALL: Running back Damien Berry. He didn't do go up against the first team defense, but Berry Damien Berry was still by far the most impressive individual performer of Saturday's game. His 54-yard touchdown run and backflip into the end zone was the most impressive play of the day. For a guy who made the move from safety to running back last season and spent all of last year on the scout team (where he earned Scout Team MVP), Berry impressed me with his breakaway speed on several runs, including his toughness to not only take on safeties head on, but barrel over them. With a healthy Javarris James, Graig Cooper, Lee Chambers and Mike James, Berry is probably fifth on the depth chart at running back. But injuries happen -- like they did this spring. And it's good know when given the chance Berry is going to run hard.

IMPRESSED ME AWARD: OK, so Taylor Cook isn't going to exactly win a Heisman anytime soon. But Saturday, he looked like the clear-cut backup to Jacory Harris. Granted, it was against the second team defense. But at one point, the 6-7, 232-pound redshirt freshman completed nine passes in a row, showing us he can get into a rhythm and handle the short-to-mid range passing game if needed. He completed 11 of his 14 attempts for 103 yards and led UM on a 15-play, 71-yard scoring drive before giving way to Cannon Smith at the 11, who capped the drive with a 1-yard TD pass to John Calhoun. Coach Randy Shannon said afterward none of the backups separated themselves and that he'd have to watch the film. But the film won't lie. Cook has improved and is definitely the front runner to be Jacory's backup.

SHANNON SAID: "Very happy [with how the spring went]. We went through the spring adding in a new offense, new defense, and you watched the players come out today and they executed a lot of great things. You see a guy like Damien Berry run the ball pretty well. Mike James did a lot of good things. Taylor Cook, the guy came in and worked well with the twos but also came in late in the game and got another touchdown with the ones. You're starting to see the team gel a lot and do the things we want to get done... We're a whole lot better. We've got more players. We feel we've done a great job in recruiting – our numbers are up. My first year and second year we played a lot of freshmen. Now these freshmen are sophomores, and you can see the difference from last year to now. And guys coming in like Mike James, Brandon Washington, Olivier Vernon – those guys coming in are going to make a difference in next year's season because of what they've learned."

EYE OPENING STAT: Jacory Harris and the first team offense didn't score. It was by far their worst day of the spring. But the first team defense had a lot to do with it. Harris was only 9 of 16 for 141 yards and an INT. Graig Cooper, who took all the first team carries, had just four yards on seven carries. The secondary did a nice job winning several one-on-one battles despite giving up a few long pass plays. There were four pass breakups in all, including ones by Chavez Grant, Brandon Harris and Sam Shields. Randy Phillips had an interception on a deflected pass batted away by Harris.

Still Florida has never gone undefeated!

Here is a list of teams in the SEC that have since 1906

Mississippi 1st 1962
UGA 1st 1946, 2nd 1980
LSU 1st 1908, 2nd 1958
Auburn 1st 1913, 2nd 1993
UT 1st 1914, 2nd 1938, 3rd 1998
Arkansas 1st 1909, 2nd 1964, 3rd 1975
Bama 1st 1925, 2nd 1930, 3rd 1934, 4th 1945, 5th 1961, 6th 1966, 7th 1979, 8th 1992

I guess the closest Florida can come to a undefeated season is with a tie. But then again so did Vandy and Miss st.

David Hyde's article on Randy Shannon is really good.

The Herald shut me up- Kehoe just know this

UF beat LSU 51-21
Georgia beat LSU 52-38
Ga Tech put 480 yds of offense on Ga
Only 2 years ago West Va ran ragged all over number 3 Ga

UF only put 26 (3 gift points-actually 23) on UM

51-23=28

Therefore, UF put 4 TDs more on lSU than UM

GREAT SEC DEFENSES!!!!!!!lol

The QB on my son's high school team has a much stronger arm than Jacory.

U won't win the ACC Coastal with a QB that throws up ducks

Solid deductions Jaime. I agree. Screw those Gaytors. We actually beat them. Combine your logic with UM getting screwed by the refs and we actually won up there in trailerville.

Miami, USC cranking out NFL players
By Charles Robinson, Yahoo! Sports

1. Miami
Draft picks since 1999: 65
First-round picks:: 27

5. Florida State
Draft picks since 1999: 59
First-round picks: 13

9. Florida
Draft picks since 1999: 55
First-round picks: 10

Highlights: DE Jevon Kearse, LB Mike Peterson, WR Darrell Jackson, LB Andra Davis, CB Lito Sheppard

Lowlights: DT Reggie McGrew, LB Johnny Rutledge, WR Travis Taylor, WR Taylor Jacobs, TE Ben Troupe, WR Chad Jackson

Skinny: A program that has produced some nice talent and some ugly busts in fits and spurts over the past 10 years. The offensive talent has clearly been the toughest part of the team to evaluate, with NFL franchises swinging and missing repeatedly on Florida wideouts, quarterbacks, and offensive linemen. Receivers have been especially maddening. All of those players were recruits of coaches Steve Spurrier and Ron Zook, which relied heavily on finding the best athletes and then fitting them into a system that didn’t mesh well with NFL results.

Urban Meyer’s recruiting classes are just now hitting the NFL level, but his spread scheme is expected to produce more of the same. The most dependable aspect of Florida’s talent base has been the defense, which has produced a few good players (Kearse, Peterson and Sheppard) and a litany of solid ones (defensive end Alex Brown, safety Marquand Manuel and linebacker Channing Crowder). If it weren’t for the total number of draft picks, Florida might not be in the top 10 at all.

What the...????? UM and FSU don't play in "God's" conference, and yet they have set themselves up as the school's to go to in Florida, if you want to make it to the next level! Impressive!

Go 'canes!

Meyer explained why he allows the public and media to sit and watch every minute of spring practice. Many schools close off practices in the spring, and the Gators close practices during the season, but Meyer doesn’t mind letting the fans watch during the spring.

“We do have things I guess we want to hide but I don’t care,” Meyer said. “Just come out and play a little bit and have some fun, let them go. There will be time to lock them down and that’s next year.”

U ='s Puuuuuuuuuuusssssssified

Florida's offense is over 50% option stuff. Not much is scripted. Opening practice in the spring isn't really a big deal to them, especially if Tebow isn't the QB.

USC opens all practices (winter, spring, fall etc...). They do it when it's camp and when they play ND.

Do that before you talk smack.

I looked all over for this article, and I could not find it! Kehoe, would you like to paste the link to this lie...I mean story so we can see everything Meyer said!

In the mean time, there is one article and one blog on Gaytor Clause about Meyer "tweeking" the offense so Tebow can run a pro set during mop-up. This is to help him adjust his style for next years draft. Lucy, it's not going so well!

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/colleges/uf/story/975869.html

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gator_clause/2009/03/florida-gators-spring-practice-day-4-ol-carl-johnson-in-good-standing-with-team.html#more

The article goes on to say that UF lacks a true TE and fullback to run the I formation. UF does not have a true TE??? Nonsense!!! They have one of the best TE's in next year's draft. His name is Tim Tebow!

P.S. I almost forgot! The main reason for the blog was to inform us that sexual predator Carl Johnson is back on UF's team, in good standing! Man, I didn't see that coming!

Wun-tu-tree-for-fyve, 'dem Floriduhhhh Gayter's don't's tayke no's jive!!

[PICTURED, Carl Johnson. His former girlfriend claimed in a written statement to authorities that Johnson's No.1 goal in life was to kill someone.]

What will the gutless wonders yamber on about as the number of UM players in the NFL steadily dwindle? They'll still yell FIVE BABY. They sound like those nimrod Yankee fans. Yankee fan could eat diarrhea for a living but they still yell "26 RINGS...BABEEE " at the end of every argument.
U should be stripped of the 1981 title as that was the biggest joke of a schedule EVER SEEN in college football.

Don't those Yankee fans sound stupid cane fan?

U are denied access to yelling " FIVE SHIPS" until you win the lowly ACC crown. Once U joined a conference that has actual competition, mediocre albeit, U quickly sank.

There are NOT 8 wins on the schedule.

1-3 out of the gate is very likely. 4-0? Impossible. 3-1? Highly unlikely.
2-2? Doable.

"Grow a pair"

That's funny comming from a UF fan whose team doesn't want to play us in a series anymore. UF should grow a pair and play the U. Chickensh*ts.

What could Marble Mouth be hiding at the top secret football compound?

Is it that he doesn't want the media to see just how weak Jacory Harris' arm really is?

He did an excellent job of concealing that "upper body injury" that Harris got when he was crushed by the UNC linebacker.

The proof is in the pudding Randy. The kid doesn't have a D-1 arm. He does a nice job throwing up those sky high "go get it" passes. But that's about it.

Urban Meyer on closing practice:

Quote of the day: “I’m sure Tebow is down there (at Florida) working out and doing the same thing. While everybody else might be at the beach, I’m sure he’s at the school working out. You can have fun later on in life. For me right now, it’s a business, and I want us to win.”

Go find the link yourself U clown. Then you'll feel good about flaming it.

That Kehoe guy is WAY inside your head

KEEP THE TOP SECRET FOOTBALL COMPOUND LOCKED UP RANDY
If you think your ACC opponents care what U are doing at foodstamp U, U are wrong.

UF will win it's 4th title and 8th SEC title in 09. That is a legacy that will continue to build, unlike the team of yesteryear down south.

That will FAR SURPASS the resume of Foodstamp U.

WOW,anyways can't wait for the canes to show the ppl what time it is and prove the haters wrong should be an interesting season and coop isn't a bust he just hasn't been utilized the rite way.come on he had nix as an OC.

We's building depths:

You still haven't answered the question on why your sorry ass team won't play us. Stick to your sorry little FBS blowouts, your overrated SEC, lose your annual game to an unranked team, and go to hell coward!!

Sorry, stupid people...er...Gator fans piss me off.

What do you guys think is the canes ideal starting LB corps this year?

If Brown developed, I would like to see him in the middle with Spence and McCarthy on the outside.

But, for some reason...I get the feeling he won't be ready to start this year. So, I think McCarthy in the middle with Spence and Futch on the outside. Of course, this assumes that McCarthy can stay healthy too.

That leaves the odd man out (Brown or Futch) + Sharpton, Buchanon, as top backups...

Thoughts?

What the F`..U moronic loser..why do U insist on posting the same blog on every U web site but changing your name..U no doubt are the biggest friggen loser ive ever come across on the internet..Just because even the trailorville sites have banned you..you have to have something better to do then this...go set up some man crush site on teblow and his roid invested dome and maybe you and a few others can form circle jerk and find happiness

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Spring football is a time to experiment, but Florida's Urban Meyer on Monday sounded like a coach who's ready to toss any kind of I-formation looks and head right back to his bread and butter.

"The problem right now is you have two tight ends and that's it," Meyer said. "You have a bunch of inexperienced fullbacks. That I-package, I'm not sure how [long] that I-package is going to be sticking around here. We want to have it in, but once again I've said this from four years ago when we walked on this campus, we don't really have an offense.

"It's based on what you have so we can run 'I' all you want. If your players aren't very good or they're struggling or young and inexperienced, we're not going to run that package. We'll go to five wide. You've seen us do that before.

"We have the scheme in, but it's all personnel-based. Right now, Aaron Hernandez is one of our top five players on the team. Des Parks, right now, has no idea which way right or left is and the fullbacks are struggling as well. It's not looking very good."

Ha ha, "players aren't very good". You can say that again coach! You run a gimmic offense and you're already frustrated at your team trying to run any kind of REAL offense.

University of Florida football is a JOKE!! Their players and coach even know it!

GOOD ONE Little Cane! I’ve been saying the same thing since 2005. Happy to see someone else has bought into my ignorance. Dare I say, we will be able to use the same pre-season quote in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

I predict the average attendance for the entire 2009 at about 15,500 given the capacity of our rent-to-own Stadium.

The real story is that we are gonna get blown out by a Sooners team that lost 90% of their starters.

“Shannon has proven unpredictable before….”

“Yes and no…..”

“We have to lose before we can win……”

U said the crowd was more like 15,500??????? U are a sad delusional clown. Not a chance that rusty Lockhart Stadium saw 7,000 fans saturday. And this for a FREE game in a metro area with MILLIONS of people. No one cares about has-been U. Your own cane beat reporter LAUGHED at the 13,500 “estimate.” What kind of cruel joke is the athletic department playing when they come up with absurdly skewed numbers like that?

Sadly, I think U actually believed that 15,500 crap you posted. The endzones were EMPTY fool.

Your secondary is as slow as anything I’ve ever seen in D-1 football. Sam Bradford will expose this still eroding program in a BIG WAY.

1-3 out of the gate. U have depth issues BIG TIME.

Jacory Harris has a wiener arm. Nice kid but he sure does throw a duck. (QUACK QUACK)

However fact of the matter is with Randy “Which Way Is Up” Shannon leading the blind every other Thursday night of the season, a more politcally correct title would have been …..”Jacory Harris is UM’s No.12, but who is the starter?”
As I have predicted for the past three years, no chance in Coral Gables of winning an ACC Title. When I said win another ship’ in 2006, 2007, and 2008 I was implying the 305 Ship’ us half-wit Canes vs up-and-coming FIU.

His durability will be a major shortcoming in 09. He’s already dealing with a bum shoulder. Couple that with his average arm strength and U have 09’s disaster in the making.

Wasn’t Marve supposed to be the guy that overshadowed Tebow? How’d that work out for ya canestool?

Where are Bailey and FORSTON? On the bench? okay.

These delUsional Canes are just too entertaining for words Kehoe... They were all ready to jump ship after their once again typical end of the season collapse. Now they're all pumped up about how Duh U is on the way back, because they beat themselves this Spring...

Duh U's first month of the season is going to be the stuff of classic comedy/tragedy... Then will come the mid-season mini streak of false hope only to be followed by yet another end of the season meltdown of CANE proportion... (Cue the "we are young" babble)

Hopefully then they'll start pitching themselves over the top of DOLPHIN Stadium (that is if any of these idiots actually do show up to the games) ...

I mean seriously A.K.S., this stuff just writes itself.

Too bad we have to wait til Sept. for it all to begin, but it will be well worth it...

And to U that wonder why WE are here... U are the best Soap Opera there is... Hell, everyone loves a good Ramblin "Train" Wreck right?

AND THAT IS U .

Posted by: Two Cars Crash Head On ... Then Both Get Run Over By A Train | March 31, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Oh my god Two Cars, that was funny. The only problem with the "hurl themselves over the top of DS " comment is that the upper bowl is virtually empty during their games. How can people jump if there is no one up there?

When their annual collapse commenced last year, they ALL bashed the team and the coaches. Short memories these guys have. Losses are like alcohol, they make you lose your inhibitions. Loss scarred and angry, uninhibited cane fan TRASHED the program late last year.

Springs launches the broken record that is HopeU. They love to carry on with about how they are on the way back. Do they really believe all that "U R scared" nonsense? It's a joke that they are playing on themselves without even realizing it. Fortunately UM will get it's due at the beginning of the season in 09 instead of at the end. The self-trashing will begin much more timely in 09 and we will see them calling for Shannon's head early-season instead of late-season. Did you forget that you were screaming loudly for his head in 08 cane fan?

You are right Two Cars, WE come here because it's just GOOD comedy. They're convinced that the honorable Curse of Art Kehoe has some hating agenda. Not the case. UM is an excellent institution. Unlike hating cane fans, WE don't see any need to trash the internationally recognized UM. I have great respect for the professionals that UM produces. WE just can't help having good laughs at the ignorant fans and the dumpster fire football program that they hold so dearly. It's amusing to watch them trash UF because it's in a rural town while UM is located in an area that festers with crime. It's not UM's fault that my sister was robbed in Coral Gables and had a gun placed on the back of her head. But it does scream hypocrite ! But U go ahead and continue to trash the city that has often appeared on lists of "Best Cities to Live In." WE don't need to apologize because UF is in a rural town. It's a classic college town.

The FIVE RINGS turned them into a fan base that thinks rings are the only measuring stick of success within the program. Ever since their ability to compete for "ships" vanished they are quite confused and turn that confusion toward others with hateful comments. They personally attack the The Curse of Art Kehoe daily. Whatever cane fan. I know it disappoints you greatly that I won't meet you at rusty Lockhart Stadium for a fight in the parking lot. It's a cane thing. I wouldn't understand.

That you would even MENTION UM's sad defense in the same breath with LSU's defense proves that you are completely delusional. GT will toy with U again. Control the clock and score on them Jaime? OHHHH ! That's all U have to do huh? Just wave your magic swagger wand Jaime. LSU clearly demonstrates the difference between ACC D's and SEC D's.
So U cut GT's rushing IN HALF...they still gain 236 yards on the ground.

Spring Game Final Thoughts:

Someone needs to teach Donna how to "throw up" a U.

Estimating the crowd at 13,500 is FRAUD. The place didn't sniff 7,000. Who in the athletic department contrived that number and what did they hope to gain by it? Millions of people in the Tri-county area and U couldn't even pack in 7k for a FREE football game? The fan base is a joke.

The secondary is just plain slow. Sam Bradford will have his way with U.

Jacory Harris' arm will not take U to the ACC Championship game. Not a chance. His arm strength might get it done against FAMU and Duke. Not a chance that his arm strength gets it done against the likes of OU and GT. His arm strength is average at best. (quack...quack)

"His 54-yard touchdown run (Berry) and backflip into the end zone was the most impressive play of the day." -Manny
Demonstrating once again that you're english skills leave much to be desired. You make your living with words for christ's sake. Quit butchering them.

Randy seems to be softening his dislike for all things media. He's allowed much more access to practice and is doing more interviews. Perhaps he's realized that operating the team from within a top secret compound only serves to alienate the program from the media and fans. U still have to chuckle at injury descriptions like " upper body injury." Oh yeah Randy, your ACC foes are hard at work right now trying to decide if they should prepare for Javarris Porcelain James.

“It’s early, but progress is being made.”

I must give props where props are due, quotes are extremely entertaining out of 19-19 U!

See for yourself. He does a nice job throwing up those sky high "go get it" passes. But that's about it.

“It’s early, but progress is being made.”

I must give props where props are due, quotes are extremely entertaining out of 19-19 U!

U keep rolling with that loaded at oline nonsense canesrule. U are embarrassing yourself everytime you make up this garbage.

U do not have 8 wins on that schedule. Surrender fool. Watch Beisbol. U are an aluminum bat school, nothing more.

2010 HUNT???? Previously it was WIN it in 2010 !

Now its just a hunt. IN 08 it was “ship in 09.”

Stay tuned for “ship in 2011” update.

Where’s all that goofy talk about Bailey and Forsten? Those clowns don’t even see the field you moron.

Jorge, Great blog title…..”Jacory Harris is the starter, but who is UM’s No. 2?”

5-7 6-6 7-5

Which game will Jacory get knocked out of?

His durability will be a major shortcoming in 09. He’s already dealing with a bum shoulder. Couple that with his average arm strength and U have 09’s disaster in the making.

Wasn’t Marve supposed to be the guy that overshadowed Tebow? How’d that work out for ya canestool?

Where are Bailey and FORSTON? On the bench? okay.

What is the future of an already questionable O-line when you are banking on a guy named Pee-po?

Everyone is “scared.”

Yes Canespace is superior. That is of course if you don't wish to have any objective comments in the conversation.

If you enjoy an ignorant conversation that completely ignores some of the realities of the program ,

CANESPACE IS FOR U !

We love U canespace. Even though U can't see the trees from the forest, we love U.

There is a reason that Canespace is the stomping ground for the same 10 delusional homers.

It makes me so proud when Lil Steamer shows up and smacks U fools around.

See for yourself. He does a nice job throwing up those sky high "go get it" passes. But that's about it.

It all depends on who the h-@@ shows up. I believe GT is beatable, look what LSU did to them. Youjust have to control the clock and score on them!" -Jaime

What and no link? Nice April fools days!

The Herald article, "Florida Sports Buzz: A peek in the UM huddle" had some good info. regarding the Coaches take on their spring and personnel. Lovett's opinions about Sharpton, Brown, Buchanon, the CBs and lack of depth at S and LB are insightful. Lovett's comments give me a lot of confidence in him, and I think the defense will improve this year. If the DL is going to be dominant, the defense will be good because it all starts up front. We know about Fortson, but I think Allen Bailey will surprise some people with how dominant he can be.

If UM could use a more athletic Mike LB, why not C-Mac if he is healthy?

I am interested to see where Ray Ray will fit in when he arrives on campus. S? LB? Even TE?

On offense: Jacory has already been mentioned on ESPN as a potential breakout star in 2009, and his receivers are the best group in the ACC. The RBs are deeper than we thought (esp. with the emergence of MJ) and the OL is improving. B. Washington looks good, and Figuerora will add a lot when he comes back from injury.

The U is turning the corner in talent and depth. The cupboard was bare a few years ago, but RS and Clint are restocking it.

The U is returning to its old formula of recruiting the right Fla. players and a few players from other areas and creating both leadership and competition among the players at the different positions.

For the 2010 class, I was surprised to hear RS say that the upcoming Dade-Broward class is as talented at the 2008 Dade-Broward class (which says a lot), but RS says Palm Beach has more talent than it ever has. I hope UM can put that fence up around S.Fla. in 2010

Thing's look much better than they did a year ago and we had put ourselves in the hunt for the division title last year. If we could just be consistant and get through these 1st 4 games with at least a 2-2 or 3-1 record, we will be in good shape for the rest of the season. This year, the ACC. Next year, the nation!!

Go Canes!!!!

To get out 3-1 would be great but what would be even better is if that 3-1 was 3-0 in the ACC..Then its all about finishing strong and not tiring like last year..Lets hope our depth steps it up

I'm not expecting us to win against OU, but I'll tell you one thing, they better have a good kicker because I think that's what it's gonna come down to.

For the 2010 class, I was surprised to hear RS say that the upcoming Dade-Broward class is as talented at the 2008 Dade-Broward class (which says a lot), but RS says Palm Beach has more talent than it ever has. I hope UM can put that fence up around S.Fla. in 2010

The cupboard wasn't bare, it was looted! Coker was trying to prove that he could recruit nationally, while forgetting that the best players were right under his nose!

Keep in mind that there were many forces at work at that time. There was a mis-conception that in order to shed the "Thug" image UM had developed, the recruiters needed to find more kid's from outside the 305. Couple that with the fact that Coker was not that good at evaluating talent, and you have the perfect storm of recruiting miscues.

A lot of critics will say that Randy was part of that recruiting problem, but the recent recruiting classes do not bear that out. There are tons of kids from the 305 and surrounding areas that are hard working, humble individuals. That's what recruiting is about! Finding the kid's that can come in and contribute, without bringing a lot of baggage with them.

The only 2 athletes that have been arrested in the last year that I am aware of, were both dismissed from school before they were arrested. It's kind of scary how good these current 'canes have been!

Miami will be much improved over last year. I like the fact that the defense will have to lean on the offense for a change. The reason Miami has attracted a lot of top recruits lately is because the kid's know they can play right away if they are ready.

This notion that UM can no longer compete with the state schools is absurd! The AD's at those schools should be ashamed at the money they are spending on coaches and facilities! In our state it's not necessary. You can build a 5 time NC team with half of the money it takes to win 2 or 3 titles at other state schools.

Look at the success that Greg Schiano had at Rutgers with our recruits when our problems first started to appear. Look at him now! Why would a kid leave S Florida for NJ?? Because no one was showing them love at the time down here.

I'm excited about the future of UM football. We have led the way before, and we will lead the way again!

Go 'canes!

Good post Sarasota 'cane, couldn't agree with you more.

Well put Sarasota `cane..Onion is the man to lead the way
