Intruders breaching UM's local recruiting wall

Cover your eyes Canes fans, or just turn away. What you are about to read might burn your eyes and cause your blood pressure to rise. Consider this your final warning.

Outsiders are beginning to make serious recruiting inroads into South Florida. Did you hear me? There's been a breach in the Great Wall of Canes. The green and orange protective layer that used to shield the hearts of players born in the area codes of the 954 and 305 is beginning to disappear like the ozone. And if the University of Miami isn't careful, the hole could get bigger. The intrduers could end up becoming permanent residents.

No, I'm not hitting the Hurtt Alert button because the Gators picked up their first commitment from a Miami-Dade player since 2005 in Ransom Everglades linebacker Gideon Ajagbe earlier this week. I'm sounding the Shannon Siren because I'm starting to hear a change in the voices of the kids from just around the corner. I'm starting to get the feeling the Miami magnet -- the one that always seemed to yank kids in South Florida naturally toward Canes nation -- is losing its pull.

Thursday, The Miami Herald hosted a media day for local 2010 recruits. We filmed interviews, took pictures and I got a chance to sit down and talk with many players (and their coaches) who are part of what is expected to be a loaded local signing class this coming February. One by one, I heard the same answers from the recruits I've heard for years. Hialeah defensive end Corey Lemonier, running back Jakhari Gore, Booker T. Washington offensive lineman Jose Jose and Miramar receiver Ivan McCartney all told me they grew up huge fans of the Canes. But what was different listening to these recruits was that there was no longer that overriding sense that their childhood love for UM is going make the Canes the team to beat in the end. What I sensed was a greater awareness from our local players, that there are more choices out there and just because you are from Miami doesn't mean you have to play for the Canes. It sounded to me like many of them have been listening to the other guys.

And the fact local players are beginning to realize that, should scare the heck out of the University of Miami. It may only be the second week of April -- 10 months before anything becomes official on the next National Signing Day. But there are serious signs the old Miami mystique is evaporating. The truth is outsiders have been working hard to make advances for years, and they aren't just knocking on the door anymore. They're busting through it and really are getting into the mind of local players once considered untouchable.

How else can you explain how a player like Booker T. Washington running back Eduardo Clements (the top RB on UM's board) has Georgia as his leader despite the fact his former high school coach works at UM and three of his former teammates are in Coral Gables? How else can you explain why receiver Quinton Dunbar, who committed to UM last month, decided recently he made a mistake and was reopening his recruiting? What started out with the University of South Florida stealing Monsignor Pace's Kayvon Webster on National Signing Day last February is beginning to smell a lot to me like just the start of a fire.

Don't take my word for it. Listen to the kids themselves. The first school out of Lemonier's mouth Thursday was Florida. He said the Gators speak to him more than any other team. Same for about 20 other kids. With two national titles in the last three years, the Gators have the attention of both Dade and Broward -- something they couldn't achieve before. Even FIU is gaining steam. Miami Springs receiver Willis Wright and 2011 recruit Rakeem Cato both told me, "Mario Cristobal is the truth. He recruits you the way you are supposed to be recruited. We can believe him when he says we can go to FIU and be stars there."

Believe me, I'm not relaying this message so guys like Canesrule and FIUFanatic come over to the blog,(which they will) beating their chest and telling the Greens and SarasotaCanes of the world I told you so (which they will). I'm just saying as a guy who has stood on the recruiting fence for 13 years in South Florida, the enemy is moving in and the battles aren't going to be so easy to win anymore. Consider it a warning.

> For those of you interested in watching some of the interviews we conducted, look for the Recruiting Report in our video section to pop up over the next couple of weeks.

BLOG NOTICE: I know many of you have been wondering why I haven't been posting many blogs lately and why I didn't participate in this Tuesday's Q&A. Here's the answer: The Herald moved me late last week onto the Marlins/Baseball beat. It's the result of the loss of four other sports writers following budget cuts last month.

For now, during the offseason, I'll focus more on the Marlins and local recruiting. I'm going to try and stay on the Canes beat as much as I can between those assignments. But I've got to tell you expect a slow down in production until news happens or football resumes in August. As it stands, other than Canes baseball, it's going to be pretty quiet around UM for the next few month outside of recruits making early commitments. One thing I'd like to do, though, is welcome topical questions through my email as news happens. I'm still going to be talking to sources at UM every now and again to provide you with fresh stuff. But during the down period, I'll welcome topics you guys would like for me to address. It will at the very least keep the blog going.

Screw the Marlins! They stole our stadium even thought they draw like 2,000 fans per game. I'm willing to look on the bright side, Manny, at least U are still here. You're the best thing to happen to the Herald since Dave Berry! You're the only decent coverage of the U and this blog is invaluable to those of us who no longer live in the 305!!

Keep Manny on the Canes beat!!!

And send the Marlins to Omaha or some such thing. They've squandered their opportunity in Miami and no one cares!

Hey Manny, those editors try to screw with you, just say the word! You got a lot of loyal readers here and we got yer back.

Stop with U being so loaded at positions. Where were all these great Tb's and Wr's against Cal, GTECH, UF, VTECH or FSU in the 1st half? Oh wait there was the Duke game.

Let me guess Pay. Your the typical Miami trash fan that never attended the university and is too broke to go to a game. Keep watching on your black and white TV and dream of Jimmy.

Posted by: SOUP | April 10, 2009 at 01:51 PM

There are 50 times more Gator fans who have never attended UF, as there are 'cane fans who have never attended UM. For some reason it's ok to root for a state school that you never attended, but not a private school. It must have something to do with the tax money that pours into the state schools.

I tried to deliver this message to you at Gator Clause, but there was no one there to accept it!

Ole Miss is even more irrelevant than UM is! Do you spend hours on their site? What about Utah?

You know Congress never debated whether one of our titles was legit. They are having hearings about your title as we speak!

Go 'canes!

Wow another fool. Just because someone says something bad about the Canes, they have to be a Gator. Keep thinging things are great in Canes Land. There are more fans like me who want to see Randy go. We actually attend the games.

Stop with U being so loaded at positions. Where were all these great Tb's and Wr's against Cal, GTECH, UF, VTECH or FSU in the 1st half? Oh wait there was the Duke game.

Cane fan should be permanently barred from using the words "loaded" and "depth." Depth means U have strength in your reserves. That flat out doesn't exist at UM. Loaded? See last post by SOUP. U don't know what the meaning of loaded is. NW Ballahs is NOT loaded

Slow and weak. Not that the secondary was dodging GT's backs though

U all look like fools drilling Manny. He's just relayed EXACTLY what recruits are telling him and others. Denial will not re-build a fence

All this fussing and fighting is ridiculous. Manny tells the truth, no reason to get mad about it. There are a lot of different reasons for the change, it can be reversed to some extent, and it's only partially the result of anything that's happened at Miami.

Fact of the matter is collegiate athletics are becoming professionalized. Just as one day kids would grow up dreaming of playing for the Packers or the Cowboys or whatever, kids all over So. Fla still grow up dreaming of playing for the U or the crimi'Noles or USC or Penn State. Just as a pro football free agent, whoever they grew up dreaming of playing for, now asks only one question when deciding which team's free agent offer to sign, now high school kids are doing the same thing. That question? "What's best for me, my family and my career."

The simple fact of the matter is that we live in a cynical world where younger and younger kids are having to take more and more responsibility over their own lives. It's no longer enough to simply follow your heart to where it leads. These kids are simply making the rational decision to do what's best for their long term earning potential.

Don't knock them for it and don't scream at the sun for shining too bright. It just is what it is. You can either get mad about it, or you can deal with it.

I'm sorry Manny, but this blog was utter garbage. I can understand waving a few flags saying how these out-of-305 schools are making in-roads (which you did say), but this whole article is basically a "OMG, we're in deep doodoo. FIU to out recruit us?!"

I mean are you serious? If we have a mediocre season again, and this was coming up in Dec. and RS was just fired, I'd be worried. It's April. A lot can change. Hell, all these recruits haven't signed an LOI. So nothing is concrete until NSD.

Saying that you simply wanted to convey to us that kids don't think so highly of Miami is valid. But it's also being disingenous. When OSU stole that NC from us, they had like 85% of that team go into the NFL. Florida has won 2 NC's, how many players have been drafted? UF does not produce NFL-ready talent. These kids will ultimately see that. What they are doing now is just seeing UF as champions. That's the allure. But after this season when they go 9-3, 8-4, what's the allure?

I'm sure you wrote this blog to get a rise out of us fans, get us passionate about the Canes during the offseason, but really, I found it distateful. I mean seriously, talking about FIU and MC like if they are "the truth." I just vomited.

Casual Observer,

Explain St. Thomas. Best HS team in the country and none of their players are really high on UM. Why are most of their top players looking at UF or some other school. Where is the wall?

Cristobal IS the truth. UM's is ducking FIU in football. FACT !

These cane blogs have gotten so bad they have nothing but trailorville fans on them...thats about as sad as it gets...then to even answer your own post..thats a pretty pathetic life...they did start 3 more cane blogs...open-wide for Teroid would you like to know those as well so you can go copy these posts you make there as well...keep ramming your toungue down hookers throats vince in hope of finding love

Lets go over to Canespace. I think they are breaking down our 4-0 start. We also have a special breaking down how Jacory Harris and Greg Cooper are better than Sam Bradford/ Demarco Murray. That is inisght.

Why dont U go over there?? Oh yeah...U cant..

Its my sight. Ill ban you over there,

Posted by: SebastianDaIbis | April 10, 2009 at 02:44 PM

You know what's more pathetic Sebastian? The guy mentioned on Gator Clause that he has a 15 year old step-son! WHAT a loser! That makes him about 40-50 years old! A study has shown that most bloggers are angry white males between 40-50 years old! Way to perpetuate the stereotype loser!

It's obvious the guy has just been pummeled by his 'cane friends over the years! I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at this losers house the night Brock beat UF!

Go 'canes!

Go ahead trailorville fan..do it right now then..Step up..Stop acting like someone else..man up and be yourself..you cant be this much of a useless punk kid

MARK MY WORDS if Miami can somehow beat Oklahoma and win against GT and FSU, Miami will be in the Top 10 in the Country by November and headed towards another Top 5 class. Beating Oklahoma at home would be huge for recruiting. DO NOT FORGET these kids want attention and if they went on the limb and said I want to go to Miami, then where is the drama? U can thank BB for all the drama that is now going to be affilated in this years upcoming recruiting saga. BB pretty much laid down the foundation for whinny little girls who want attention from colleges.

Poor step-son..he has no chance..Im sure he has some kinda spin he puts on the Brock game..That choad has all the excuses...DAU!!!!

===========================================

I did, but I'll try to point it out for you again. UF has won 2 NC's in 3 years. There's a big allure to that. Kids see that and they want to be a part of that. It's only natural....but it's also skin deep. What many also want to do is to play in the NFL and make the big bucks. Let UF's draft do the talking, they'll get the hint.

Awe, aren't you cute. Go back to the FIU board and let the grownups talk. You can try to talk about how UM is ducking "mighty little FIU" while we play OSU, OU, UF and ND. Not afraid of playing those teams, but man we're definitely scared of playing that powerhouse sunbelt team FI(who really gives a crap).

What do you bet his step-son has red hair, and dude's been beating him senseless since he met him?

Posted by: SOUP | April 10, 2009 at 02:53 PM

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, no one knows it's ME!!!

WE'RE HUNTING WABBIT'S

Go 'canes!

WHY THE HELL DO GAYTURD F*GS POST ON UM BLOGS AND SEEM TO KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT THE STATE OF THE U AND ITS PLAYERS, PAST AND PRESENT (SOUP)? YOU SIR, ARE A HUGE DOUCHER AND CAN LICK MY HAIRY CALIFORNIA BEANBAG.

For the Record,

Coker didnt recruit the guys that won the championships. i hate to type this but some of you need to understand that: it takes approximately 4 years to make it from a freshman to a senior -- Wow!!

Coker simply drove Butch's boat... There wasn't much to do after Butch stockpiled the team, but to sit there and clap after big plays.

Thats all Coker actually did, and it came back to bite him in the pie-hole.

During the Coker years, we saw Soldinger fired, Kehoe fired, no good QB's recruited, and the lack of any attempt to land any top local talent (maybe becuase they had dreadlocks) And Coker only took Willie Williams because he was rated number one, and willie wanted to play for Da U; if coker had to fight for Willie Williams he wouldn't have done it...

Throughout the Coker years, several players that Coker chose not to recruit, went on to have great careers at other schools.

The proof is in the pudding, Coker's recruits are in the midst of their SR years and none of them are going to da pros...

The fact remains that Florida has talent; South Florida in particular...

With Randy on the prowl, not being afraid to walk the isles of Northwestern, Booker T, Carol City, West Palm, Broward, he'll get what the team needs to turn things around.

The kids now a days are getting more exposure, and are attempting to stick to the script, of searching for a place to play right away.

It's a cycle, there are some kids that want to get a ring, even if it means sitting the bench. Some will look at a national championship team and will decide not to go, there because that champ already has stars.

These kids are looking at the chance to be on TV, and the depth chart now a days...

Miami has room to land top talent in the areas that we have needs, which will give us an advantage, even if we only go 8-5 this year...

I guarantee there will be allot of kids that will recognize that they can make the diffrence, to push Miami over the hump, and come to play for Shannon to be apart of the rebirth at da U

Go Canes!!

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Canes recruiting troubles are linked to the fact that Miami sucks as a place to get an education, the fans are fair weather, and the Internet is here. Players gunned down at home doesn't happen in Columbus; on field brawls with lesser matched teams who aren't even rivals isn't a worry in LA; a low classed coach who bad mouths his players, blames his losses on other coaches and doesn't get the full potential out of his supposedly superior players on the field doesn't happen with JoePa. Plus, they stopped all the cocaine parties with Luke. Why would anyone want to stay here again? Those Rolex nights were the only reason kids stayed here--so they could continue their SoFla life.

The fact is that most parents want to get their kids OUT of the Miami life before it puts them in jail or a coffin. UM has always had a reputation of promoting that life while it gave you a good chance of playing on Sunday. But too many NFL UM alum are wearing prison blues instead on Billy's White Shoes; doing a perp walk instead of the Ickey Shuffle. What parent of a golden athelete wants that for their children?

Couple that with a weak schedule in an even weaker conference that U don't dominate like the champion you claim to be and people see a paper tiger. THAT'S why kids are not staying for the U. They actually want a chance to get out of Florida and do something more meaningful than take abuse from fair weather fans who never graduated high school or college and still live at home with their mom. They want to know people that don't have gold teeth, dreadlocks, wife beaters, baggy shorts, and metallic painted Buicks with spinner rims (and those are the coaches).

Seriuosly, if SOUP was that confident in the future state of his beloved Gayturds and their trailer park, cousin fu**ing, black tooth grinning fans, he wouldnt spend all day trying to get a rise out of the loyal UM fans by smack talking on OUR blog.I know I wouldnt give a sh*t what UF and FSU were up to if we were coming off of our 2nd title in 3 yrs. But that just shows you that rather than rejoicing with his own sh*t eating brush oakie fans, he's sweating the U. F*ck that fool and his future 4th rd draft pick QB that gets converted to a H-back.

Let the facts speak themselves...

Just because your scared to walk down a street in Liberty City, Overtown, and Miami Gardens doesn't mean a kid from Liberty City, Overtown, and Miami Gardens is scared to walk around in Coral Gables.

Your exact attitude is the reason why our kids take pride in staying home and putting on for their city!

You can care less about these kids, until they become NFL stars, and want their autograph.

Shannon cares, and so does the alumni, and the past present and future Canes that you dont understand.

I'm glad the wolrd doesnt revolve on your clock. Your trying to preach how much you dont care about the U.

That's why the kids that your describing don't care about you - Show no love get no love.

You sound like Coker material, go help your perfect kids find a spot on Cokers new roster near mexico prick!

Have more then 4 road games..try leaving the state to play out of conference you idiot trailorville fan...I guess the players want to come to your school knowing your coach will let you smoke tree...rape and beat woman...do `roids..and do nothing as long as you win...You cant spell F_CK YOU without uf..memo vince...its not called quality time when you try to teach your step-son that love is bought through a hooker and snorted through your beak...let the kid have a fair chance in life and dont show him your pics you have of you and the rest of your Teroid club slapping sac...CAN YOU SAY SHAMWOW!!!

Couple that with a weak schedule in an even weaker conference that U don't dominate like the champion you claim to be and people see a paper tiger.

Florida hasn't really made a dent in south florida since the early to mid 90's (Freddy Taylor, Teako Brown, Lawrence Wright, Ben Hanks, Cameron Davis)
If Florida's going to make a dent, this is the year, I predict Florida will sign 4-5 south floridians. Matt Elam, Gerald Christian, Gideon Ajagbe, Lindan Trail, and hopefully hold on to Demar Dorsey. Those are quality names, Quality over Quanity.

Players gunned down at home...

Why would anyone want to stay here again?

Posted by: Can't Spell Dumb without UM | April 10, 2009 at 03:23 PM

I guess the alternative is going to G-ville and getting your head cut off by a drifter! Or to FSU where one of the biggest mass murderers in state history held a "party" at a sorority. Or to VT where 31 kid's were gunned down by a fellow student. Or to Michigan, where today 2 students were gunned down.

Is Tulane a bad school because it's in New Orleans?

What do the rich and famous know about Miami that you do not? Why do Ditty, Sly, Gloria, Oprah, etc., etc., all have homes there? Who is the most famous resident of G-ville, of Tallahassee, etc.??

C'mon Dude, you sound stupid! Miami is a destination city. Every town has a bad neighborhood, or two! We got the gangster's, you got the meth head's (and their lab's), and your better than us? Our punk's sell crack, your punk's sell oxy's, and your better than us?

You're so insecure about your place in life! It's pathetic! It's not The U's fault that you have a small PP! Deal with it!

Read up on facts

Still along ways to go for Louis Nix, I know we have to make a dent in south florida but I also know we can't let miami land quality north florida athletes like ray ray armstrong and dye. I think FSU is fallen behind UF and UM in the state of Florida regarding recruiting.

Fact is, there are only so many spots available on each team's recruting board, which means theres enough talent to go around... And that's in-state alone

Which makes all of da U bashig pointless...

Da U will take all of the guys with pro potential, and let the Gaytors have the 5'6 150lb athletes.

UMbuilt its 5 NCs on So fl kids sprinkled with sme out of state kids, and most of themwere not No.1 on the radar. They all went to UF, Notredame, tennessee, FSU, etc.

You have it all wrong Manny, Gideon was never offered by Miami and he never wanted to go there to begin with. He's always been a Florida person and they have recruited him much more.

It is common knowledge in the football world that Florida and South Florida specifically is loaded with high school football talent. So players going to other schools has been going on for many years.
