Intruders breaching UM's local recruiting wall

Cover your eyes Canes fans, or just turn away. What you are about to read might burn your eyes and cause your blood pressure to rise. Consider this your final warning.

Outsiders are beginning to make serious recruiting inroads into South Florida. Did you hear me? There's been a breach in the Great Wall of Canes. The green and orange protective layer that used to shield the hearts of players born in the area codes of the 954 and 305 is beginning to disappear like the ozone. And if the University of Miami isn't careful, the hole could get bigger. The intrduers could end up becoming permanent residents.

No, I'm not hitting the Hurtt Alert button because the Gators picked up their first commitment from a Miami-Dade player since 2005 in Ransom Everglades linebacker Gideon Ajagbe earlier this week. I'm sounding the Shannon Siren because I'm starting to hear a change in the voices of the kids from just around the corner. I'm starting to get the feeling the Miami magnet -- the one that always seemed to yank kids in South Florida naturally toward Canes nation -- is losing its pull.

Thursday, The Miami Herald hosted a media day for local 2010 recruits. We filmed interviews, took pictures and I got a chance to sit down and talk with many players (and their coaches) who are part of what is expected to be a loaded local signing class this coming February. One by one, I heard the same answers from the recruits I've heard for years. Hialeah defensive end Corey Lemonier, running back Jakhari Gore, Booker T. Washington offensive lineman Jose Jose and Miramar receiver Ivan McCartney all told me they grew up huge fans of the Canes. But what was different listening to these recruits was that there was no longer that overriding sense that their childhood love for UM is going make the Canes the team to beat in the end. What I sensed was a greater awareness from our local players, that there are more choices out there and just because you are from Miami doesn't mean you have to play for the Canes. It sounded to me like many of them have been listening to the other guys.

And the fact local players are beginning to realize that, should scare the heck out of the University of Miami. It may only be the second week of April -- 10 months before anything becomes official on the next National Signing Day. But there are serious signs the old Miami mystique is evaporating. The truth is outsiders have been working hard to make advances for years, and they aren't just knocking on the door anymore. They're busting through it and really are getting into the mind of local players once considered untouchable.

How else can you explain how a player like Booker T. Washington running back Eduardo Clements (the top RB on UM's board) has Georgia as his leader despite the fact his former high school coach works at UM and three of his former teammates are in Coral Gables? How else can you explain why receiver Quinton Dunbar, who committed to UM last month, decided recently he made a mistake and was reopening his recruiting? What started out with the University of South Florida stealing Monsignor Pace's Kayvon Webster on National Signing Day last February is beginning to smell a lot to me like just the start of a fire.

Don't take my word for it. Listen to the kids themselves. The first school out of Lemonier's mouth Thursday was Florida. He said the Gators speak to him more than any other team. Same for about 20 other kids. With two national titles in the last three years, the Gators have the attention of both Dade and Broward -- something they couldn't achieve before. Even FIU is gaining steam. Miami Springs receiver Willis Wright and 2011 recruit Rakeem Cato both told me, "Mario Cristobal is the truth. He recruits you the way you are supposed to be recruited. We can believe him when he says we can go to FIU and be stars there."

Believe me, I'm not relaying this message so guys like Canesrule and FIUFanatic come over to the blog,(which they will) beating their chest and telling the Greens and SarasotaCanes of the world I told you so (which they will). I'm just saying as a guy who has stood on the recruiting fence for 13 years in South Florida, the enemy is moving in and the battles aren't going to be so easy to win anymore. Consider it a warning.

> For those of you interested in watching some of the interviews we conducted, look for the Recruiting Report in our video section to pop up over the next couple of weeks.

BLOG NOTICE: I know many of you have been wondering why I haven't been posting many blogs lately and why I didn't participate in this Tuesday's Q&A. Here's the answer: The Herald moved me late last week onto the Marlins/Baseball beat. It's the result of the loss of four other sports writers following budget cuts last month.

For now, during the offseason, I'll focus more on the Marlins and local recruiting. I'm going to try and stay on the Canes beat as much as I can between those assignments. But I've got to tell you expect a slow down in production until news happens or football resumes in August. As it stands, other than Canes baseball, it's going to be pretty quiet around UM for the next few month outside of recruits making early commitments. One thing I'd like to do, though, is welcome topical questions through my email as news happens. I'm still going to be talking to sources at UM every now and again to provide you with fresh stuff. But during the down period, I'll welcome topics you guys would like for me to address. It will at the very least keep the blog going.

So That deek head above can insult me but my response is censored? I'm tired of this blog.
Bottom line is Gaturd fans are soft and weak as is their entire program, and MAnny-

well at least your not denying your from Hialeah. Kendall? same difference.

HEARSAY CONJECTURE? wow are you stupid. He relayed comments that were made DIRECTLY TO HIM. You sound like a huge clown WHINING about what Manny posted. He's simply telling you what he's being told.

WAHHHHHHHHHH. How ignorant are U?

Cell phone belt clips, barbed wire tatoo, and Ford Expeditions....lol!!!! That was pretty good, got to give him credit.

Did the Miami Herald layoff Manny?
No news on UM football.
Nothing to report.

Football season can't come any sooner. To all the UM players, progress reports coming soon. The dade UM fans wanna see that swagger back, that Miami attitude on the field, relentless speed and intensity, that smash football, that shake your head when u make a big play days, what happened to that attitude. We wish you the best, remember football players are made in the off-seasons, instead of running 100 yard dashes, run 110 yard dashes.

5) who cares about that? thats pretty much moot. I don't like dolphin stadium too much myself, but its a non-issue. hopefully we can build an on-campus stadium one of these days. but thats an argument that nobody really cares about.

4)We probly do have fewer fans than you guys, either that or they're more spread around the country. At least our fanbase isn't 90% bandwagonning jerks. don't even lie, most gator fans are complete jerks.

3) this argument exemplifies your complete idiocy. theres not much negative you can say about the current state of the team. Jacory's a great leader and very accurate. the RBs and WRs are absolute beasts. the D-line is totally legit. and the LBs, DBs and O-line have shown signs of improvement and we have all summer to hammer that stuff out. PLUS most of the studs from the 09 recruiting class have yet to come.

2) Last year was last year. This year, the leadership is totally back. Jacory Harris was holding preliminary practices with the WRs and DBs before spring practice even started. Jason Fox has been a leader with the O-line in the weight room. Sean Spence and Colin Mccarthy will be great leaders to the Linebackers. Randy Phillips and Vaughnt Telemaque in the secondary. JJ, Coop and Chambers with the RBs. Aldarius, Laron, and Hankerson with the WRs. Plus, the coaching problem is rectified. Whipple is great and if Lovett isn't , Randy can pick up some of the slack for him.

1)Randy may not have worked on the timeframe that most of us wanted, but he's done darn good with what he was given. It's paying off for him. and he's not as stoic as all that in general. for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5FzK1K0AuM

think about the VT game. that was the funnest game i've been to in a long time (the FSU game was probably the best game we were involved in as far as a quality game but we lost and stuff). That was a sign of things to come. Now that the kids are older, they're not going to hit that wall. We're going to start out the year wiith that intensity and fire and never look back. Jacory and the WRs were making plays all year under the garbage offense of Pat Nix. Just think rationally about it for a second. This is gonna be a good year.

Thanks NAte- well said

That ignaaant trailer trash up there is so stupid, you can't reason with him. He even made fun of my words "hearsay conjecture" because he had never heard of those words. Can U imagine the rednecks in Trailerville I mean Canesville, saying Hey, them there gatirs are "heresayin' and conjecting" Gidderdone!

No, it will never happen.

MAnny- Wow. Your article now has even the Gaturd fans defending you. Good Job Manuel,

hey ya'll Manny is applying for a job in THE GAINSEVILLE GAZZETTE

Are U serious ?

Posted by: 6-7 In 2009 | April 15, 2009 at 09:08 PM

absolutely. good argument there too. very well formulated. Jacory and the WRs WERE making plays all year, werent they? and that was the bad offense.

Manny Navaro sucks. He should go back to writing about high school football. He sucked at that too now that I think about it. This story should have been written five years ago. Moron.

this breach is self explanatory and very temporary. given the lack of sucess the U has experienced under the devestating final tenure of one Larry Coker, this could be expected. however, with the likelihood of the impending sucess this season and next, a winning program = winning recriuts. they don't have to worry about a thing.

an important point being left out is what a smarmy and underhanded recruiter urban meyer is. most of the kids he's getting wouldnt be able to get in to the U b/c of grades. 2nd if you look at the last 2-3 years UF players have had more run ins with the law than the U by more than 80%. the only exception being marve and his arrest on halloween a couple years ago. urban meyer is a slimy recruiter, he'll say anything about anyone if he thinks itll get a kid to come play for him. sure it works but shannon actually has INTEGRITY. he doesnt resort to those tactics. the U takes care of business on teh field this year and more importantly the next (2010, the year we really make the leap and announce WE'RE BAAAAAACK) and these things won't matter. the U will be fine and honestly you cant sign eveybody. also arent you forgetting that we stole brandon marti and ramon buchannan from your "master recruiter" urban meyer last year? the sky isnt falling, get a grip, count to ten. if anything all these recruiting websites and blowhards on espn and scouts have made these kids teh way they are now. kids these days get caught up reading their own press clippings too much. so if urban and the other guys want to be the text message masters and all the other unseemly things that have introduced themselves to this process so be it. the U will rebound, the program is in this mess b/c of coker and how he became complacent and fell asleep behind the wheel. write the U off at yours and anyone else's (gaytors, semiholes, usf, backstabbing cristobal) peril. its better that way let them sleep on the U. then they'll just get smacked when reality sets in down the road

Okay, everyone just calm down! This is actually alot more common in the NCAA than what you think. They just got one or two players from us! It could be worse. How do you think Oklahoma started winning again? Almost half of their players come from Texas. You think I'm wrong? Take a look at Oklahoma's roster. So let's just thank God that it's just one or two instead of half of South Florida!

Miami invading gayturd country..

Nix and Glenn Top Notch DT from JACKSONVILLE, FL have committed to "THE U"..

Who is invading who?

Sanford and Dye + these 2= 4 and the gayturds get 1? and they are winning the battle?

Come on Manny, you don't need controversy to get us to read your columns..

The dust has settled... LOL

As UM fan, a few things i'm looking for: a focus on the improvements, and the positive steps being made, most improved players etc...

That's what the fans want to hear. Thats what they're looking forward to when searching for news on the home team; not over dramatized crap, based on 1 recruit signing elsewhere.

I played college ball in Arizona, and spent some time there after college from 96-01, when the cardinals were horrible. However, even thier sports casters / and beat-writers alike tried to help build support for their local home town team.

You articles have an affect... make a diffrence for your city!

As a sports writer for your city, you should still be a fan first and foremost!

There's too much hating going on around the country, aimed at Da U as it is.

Why do we need our home-town beat writer hating on Da U as well??

HOLY SHYT Bull Gator/U are no Kehoe ( my favorite)/Mycanes mind is a terrible thing to waste/ U wills stay forever dumb/dumbazzJamie/ 'Lil Steamer, You've kicked this guy around tonight. Not that it's that hard to take batting practice on him. It is nearly impossible though to get him/them to take an objective look at the state of the U.

These guys have been polluting UF blogs for YEARS. Yet we are supposed to "stay the fu@% out of HERE? SCREW U delusional moron. As long as the world class flamer/spammer/liar/3:00AMtroller continues to pollute our blogs U will receive the same. The only difference being, we stick you in your squinty (kehoe old skool) eye with opinions based on FACT. Where U post opinions based on tired rhetoric and the what U USED to be. What U used to be and what U are are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things FOOL. Don't agree? Just ask GT,NC,UVA,FSU, etc...... U have some serious beatdowns awaiting U in 09. Those opinions are based on your pathetic performance for many years running and your continual inability to develop players. It's a giant clusterfu$k down there. Say it isn't !

What is this guys obsession with UF's finances? He has IMAGINED this whole doom and gloom scenario. Does he have ANY idea how much money rolls into the UAA????? Gator Nation is RABID about its team and shows that in it's overwhelming financial support. Go look at the Bull Gator parking on game day and witness the endless line of extremely wealthy alumni in quarter million dollar RV's who pour money into the program. The little guy supports the program too as every game sells out. This same clown has been flaming UF blogs with his $8,000,000,000,000.00 jumbo-tron rant. SHUT UP YOU delusional little bean counter. Or continue with your clueless rant. Fact is, Gator Nation realizes that the ENTIRE state is in a money pinch but will continue to support the FOOTBALL MACHINE. It is what it is. State schools MAKE COLLEGE FOOTBALL GREAT. You endlessly indict "State schools" as though they are some horrible influence of college football. CLUELESS FOOL. Keep telling yourself that your little private school is at some advantage. It's laughable.

U keep carrying on about how glad you are that UM is small and self sufficient and private. WHAT A MORON. That exact thing is at the BASE of your steady erosion. Couple that with Donna and U R SCREWED !!! I think we can all agree that the erosion is clearly showing itself on the PERMANENT win loss record.

Debose? Please cane fan. Snap out of it. EVERYONE was recruiting all of the trio. All schools win some, lose some. Not getting a recruit isn't a "loss." It's the nature of the beast. Intelligent fans instead look at what you actually landed. And YOUR BELOVED ESPN RANKED UF ahead of U this year. Look FOOL, a lot of schools landed a LOT of good recruits in this cycle. Not just Florida. Not just UM. It's what you do with them that really matters. And we've seen for far too long that U are clueless in the leadership/development department. RANDY SHANNON? Okay cane fan. Roll with that guy. Afterall, he did win a "Trailblazer Award" from the Orange Bowl Committee. (cruel joke) In case you haven't noticed, your program is a Coaching CAROUSEL. How many ineffective defensive coordinators have you had in...oh lets say...the LAST FOUR YEARS ! ( U cry,we laugh)

U fan likes to think they are "marching back" because they are young and recruit very well. NEWSFLASH DORKO: UF is YOUNGER, recruits BETTER and are also the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. It's as though you think no other school is recruiting. It's all about DUH U. ESPN ranked you #11 in this recruiting cycle. The ten teams ranked ahead of U all have more money, BETTER facilites, and BETTER COACHES, all of which ultimately leads to BETTER leadership. Cane fan just can't grasp this. Oh no, it's a U thing. Pay attention to the U. Yawwwwwwwn.

U are just a .500 program now. Maybe a shade above .500 to be fair. It can still be fun. But it will NEVER be the same no matter how much empty rhetoric U throw out. Your last two HC searches were FLAMING DISASTERS. Coker, Shannon. "Nuff said !

If you think you will be lead to the promise land by Jacory Harris, the NORTHWEST BALLAH, you just aren't very smart. Nice kid, GREAT kid, but he can't sniff the jock of the likes of Sanchez, Bradford, Tebow. Sorry kids, He's a nice little QB but that's it. Maybe he'll mature into a 9-10 win QB for you. That would be nice. But if you had a clue you would set your sights on the STINKING ACC TITLE first. You're inability to grasp that is a fatal flaw. Bottom line, nothing develops at UM. Just look at your steadily dropping draft prospects, terrible record, and horrendous breakdowns in units that lead to historical blowouts.

And finally, SHUT UP with the "when Urban goes to ND" NONSENSE ! U guys should get an award for being the most ignorant to facts. FACT IS, Notre Dame came at Urban HARD when he was choosing his last job. He would have gone THEN if it was truly his "dream job." He said dream job tongue in cheek and KNOWS you can't win there. Cane fan will NEVER grasp this and will continually salivate about when "Urban leaves." Keep dreaming fools. He came to the best AD in the country and championships are FLOWING IN. His entire staff and all associated with him speaking GLOWINGLY about him, even the ones who have departed. Coaches across the nation and conference praise him. Yet clueless cane fan is sitting in the corner crying about him lying to a linebacker and kicking a field goal. You guys are complete idiots.

The most POIGNANT FACT about how fall you've fallen was pointed out earlier. Your F'in KICKER was your team MVP. Have you fully digested how sad that is?

I agree, this is too easy.

-- the blah-blah from "JD" is:

Exactly why our Local beat-writers covering Da U needs to promote the home team, abd be responsible for the product they're putting out!

I know I'm late with my blog but I would like to add my 2 cents. If those players want to play for someone else let them. We need players that want to come to the U. Players who will commit and work hard on the field. We don't want those lukewarm players. We want players who loves the U and shows it on the field.

P.S. Shannon is doing a great job recruiting players in state.
