Randy Shannon had some good news to share with reporters Wednesday morning (our Susan Miller Degnan was there). Running back Graig Cooper was out of his protective boot and back out on the practice field in limited fashion.
"Yeah, he's moving around, did some stuff," Shannon said. "I don't know if he'll be able to go in the [closed] scrimmage [Friday], but after this afternoon we'll know more."
And defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle) was more involved, participating in blitz and third down drills.
BRYCE BROWN INVESTIGATED: The bigger news, however, could turn out to be what happens in the coming days as the younger brother of Hurricanes linebacker Arthur Brown and his adviser, Brian Butler, are investigated by the NCAA. Several news reports surfaced Wednesday saying Bryce Brown's amateur status could have been violated, making him ineligible.
Arthur Brown, now a sophomore at UM, had a relationship with Butler, too. Shannon was asked about the reports. "I never heard of it - we'll find that out," Shannon said. "Usually the NCAA, when they get involved with that, they usually tell you [with a certain time frame]... Say, it's the summertime, they'd usually tell you in the summer time or when guys report they'll let you know."
Mike DeCesare, the NCAA's assistant director for amateurism certification, talked to Bryce Brown Wednesday according to reports. No word yet if Arthur will be getting a visit.
The NCAA is looking into some of the fundraising Bryce Brown accepted in high school to visit college campuses and the role Butler played. Last year, Butler was charging a $10 fee on his website PotentialPlayers.com for recruiting updates.
> ESPN's Heather Dinich caught up with athletic director Kirby Hocutt and didn't get an answer either about Shannon's contract extension.
> The Canes will hold another practice this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. I'll be out there for that. For audio interviews from practice, be sure to check our Hurricanes audio page.

Wow.... That really sucks for Bryce.

Well no shlt canefan. It has SEVERELY clouded your judgement about the head coach, the team depth, and number of wins in 09. I'll give U credit for admitting your homerism. Sorry to inform U but it's going to get much worse before it gets better.

Enough about Bryce Brown already, what does it matter? He is not at the U and will never be at the U. Let's focus on the players that are in Coral Gables, not the ones that could have been.
Bryce Brown will not even play against Miami, unless it happens to be in a bowl game. In that case, it would be a big story, but until then, forget about him!
Go Canes!
Posted by: Illinois Cane | August 19, 2009 at 01:23 PM
I hope Bryce Brown doesn't get screwed because Butler was using him to get famous. It would stink to upend a teenager before he even gets to school, especially if Butler was playing him and his family.
That said, I'm not that surprised. I get the feeling that Shannon is pretty savy about recruits. I can't remember the name, but the best running back in S. Fla last year (besides Lamar Miller) was not recruited by Miami at all. Everyone wondered how Shannon could pass up on him and take Mike James instead. The kid committed to Ohio State, but got in trouble with the law this year and won't be attending school. You just get the feeling Shannon had a good feel for this kid, and never went after him. I wonder if he backed off of Brown late because he started suspecting this investigation might happen.
Love the article MTX-Cane. Did you notice this qoute?
"One reason the ACC might be significantly better in 2009 is its teams' quarterback play. Every ACC team except Boston College and Clemson brings back its starting quarterback this season, and seven of the 10 starting quarterbacks coming back are upperclassmen."
Even this reporter realizes Harris was the real starter for the U last year.
Go Canes.

So if Bryce does go down for this I hope it has no bearing on AB. But this makes me think though, how does USC get away with so much? I mean has there even been any wrist slapping for the supposed Reggie Bush violations?

I hope Bryce goes down. It would be a fitting punishment for the whole circus around him and that clown he call an "adviser". This would teach kids to watch who they associate with and put these crooks out of business. No sympathy here.
Posted by: The Truth | August 19, 2009 at 02:24 PM
Even if the NCAA lets it go, the Gators are going to put Brown on his back. Sidcane above is a little confused as the Gators D is all coming back and certainly will not shy away from the challenge.
Those Canes fan dreaming that Randy has vision by not going after certain guys need to do a quick reality check. Players are backing away form the Canes b/c they don't know who will be the next UM coach once they fire Randy. The only question is whether they will do it at the end of the 4 game stretch when UM is 0-4 or will they wait until the end of the season. UM needs a real coaching staff. If they had a real coaching staff they would be winning the ACC now.

"Sorry to inform U but it's going to get much worse before it gets better."
What an utterly biased comment from someone who obviously doesn't follow this program religiously.
You are absolutely high if you can't look at Miami circa 2007 and Miami circa 2009 and see a big difference.
This program was in shambles when Shannon took over. Chock full of the wrong kind of players, the wrong attitude, a lack of talent and a lack of depth. Shannon cleaned house, a la Butch Davis and he has worked tirelessly to fix these issues for the past 2+ years.
There will be some growth this year. Please, this isn't going to get "much worse". Miami has bottomed out and while they're in no way *back*, the worst is behind. The talent is returning, as is the depth... though UM is still a class or two away from being loaded.
Jacory Harris is Miami's best QB prospect since Ken Dorsey -- because of his talent, but moreso for his attitude, football mind and leadership ability. Kyle Wright had a million dollar arm and a two-cent brain.
Shannon has finally assembled a staff and if you can't fathom the upgrade at offensive coordinator that Mark Whipple is over a Patrick Nix, Rich Olson or Dan Werner, then there is no hope for you.
Harris + Whipple + a deep crop of talented receivers + talent/depth at running back + some new blood on the offensive line = more production and more points for the Canes. This will be Miami's best offense since the 2002 season, easily. There will still be bumps in the road and some set backs (the offensive line definitely is the weakest link) - but again, things aren't going to get "much" worse.
Defensively Miami fell off last year after Eric Moncur, Colin McCarthy and Randy Phillps went down injured. UM was forced to rely on true freshmen to carry the load -- many of which went from high school ball, to college, to spring ball, to fall ball, to a new season. They were toast by season's end.
Seniority and depth will return on defense this year. Plus, the influx of new talent with the higher expectations on this year's sophomores - who were true freshman last year.
Miami was 7-6 last year and could've just as easily have been 10-3. North Carolina, Florida State and Cal were all winnable games that were simply lost by a young team still learning to win. A year later, the Canes will win those games -- the same way the 2000 and 2001 Canes learned from heartbreaking losses like the '99 loss to Penn State or Florida State.
If you hate Miami or don't support Randy Shannon, so be it... but your commentary is biased and flat out ignorant. Go into some depth as to WHY things are going to get "much worse". Don't just throw that crap out there and hope it sticks.

Should Ojomo redshirt???
Ojomo could miss entire season (rivals)
Defensive end Adewale Ojomo, whose jaw was reportedly broken in two places when a walkon who had been on the team for about a week punched him in the locker room on Sunday, may miss the entire season.
Ojomo's jaw is expected to be wired shut for approximately five weeks and it is expected that it would be several more weeks after that before he is ready to face the contact of football practice or a game. In addition, Ojomo's eating will be limited over the next several weeks which is expected to result in diminished strength and weight that could also take several weeks to recover from. Ojomo is a mid-sized end to begin with at approximately 253 pounds. His challenge will be to consume enough calories on a restricted diet to avoid significant weight loss. That could determine his capability to make a return later in the season.
The loss of Ojomo, temporary or for the season, is a massive blow to the Canes defense, which was expecting him to blossom into an impact player in his third season.
It will have repercussions up and down the defensive line, where a rash of injuries have struck the defensive end position. Five ends missed practice time on Tuesday.
There is a strong chance that Allen Bailey, who moved to tackle from end in spring practice, could move permanently back to end, or at worst play both end and tackle spots. Hurricane coaches must determine where they feel their depth is strongest. Miami also has Joe Joseph, Marcus Forston, Micanor Regis, Jeremey Lewis, and Josh Holmes at tackle in addition to freshmen Curtis Porter and Luther Robinson. Eric Moncur and Bailey likely would start at end with Marcus Robinson and true freshman Olivier Vernon likely to be first off the bench. Andrew Smith, Steven Wesley and freshman Dyron Dye also could become factors at the position. Gavin Hardin is another defensive end believed to be out for an extended period of time due to a shoulder injury.
Details of the incident that led to Ojomo's injury have been sketchy due to the sensitive nature of the fight and the fact that Ojomo can't talk about it. The walkon who hit Ojomo is so new to the team that several sources contacted by CaneSport could not even identify him by name. He is not listed on the official Miami roster.
For some reason, the walk-on reportedly had been trying to taunt Ojomo into wrestling matches for several days. Ojomo resisted until late last week when the two grappled for a brief time in locker room horseplay and were broken up. They reportedly shook hands later and the problem was believed to be over. Then the walkon punched Ojomo again on Sunday and his jaw was broken in the process.

You can say what you wanna say and call me small minded if you must, but the Bryce Brown fiasco was DESTINED for NCAA investigation and I for one am glad the U was not involved. The person he had advising him was, can anyone find a word that's not ugly? Just think, all of us in Cane Nation was upset b/c he reneged on the "U". Hindsight is 20/20, but I am glad he is Tennessee's problem and not Miami's. Sometime you have to do a purina cat chow (reverse) when things look messy, messy, messy. That BB issue was just like a baby when he poops!

The kids total flake. Hey Bryce...you should fast for at least a week, smoke some peyote, and meditate on this. Then go visit some CFL training camps to see how their offenses are coming along. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Sorry to rain on our parade, but we are done... Plain and simple. To many injuries to overcome, without even playing one f-ing game. It is sad, because I had such high hopes for this season.
With Ojomo, Moncur, Hardin, Oliver, etc, out it is going to look ugly. We must pray that Bailey can make the switch back to DE, with Fortson, Regis and Joseph rotating at DT. Than, hopefully Robinson can hold down the fort on the other side.
I am not very optimistic right now. Shannon should start working on his resume, because 0-4 looks more realistic by the minute.

Hopefully Arthur is clear of this. We should have suspected something with the way Bryce was being shopped around. I agree the USC farce is a joke, that whole sports programme is shady, and has been for a long time. Always had serious doubts about Pete Carroll since his days with the Jets. I never forgave him for the "choke" sign to Stoyo (which, incidentally came back to bite him when Stoyo kicked the winner). It's time USC were put under the same microscope The U was.

Harris gets his chance and he better be ready to perform from day one. RS is coaching for his career at UM, and if Harris is not on from the first half at FSU, we will see Cook. Personally, I don't want to hear any talk of pimp cups and such making its way to the media. Part of being the UM qb is using discretion and, like it or not, learning when to keep your mouth shut and some interests to yourself. From everything I hear, he is a great guy, but we all know the national media will spin things to fit what they want, so don't give them ammo.

Stop with Randy is the best recruiter. His great recruiting stratedgy is to promise people playing time (Jacory Harris) or play a position that everyone knows you cant (Bailey). You just cant recruit Miami Northwestern each year. Why cant he recruit the number one team in the country the past two years in St Thomas?
He is also one of the worst game day coaches ever (UNC game). He is also a terrible motivator (1st half of FSU game or final game at OB). He is also a terrible judge of coaches. How many coordinators is he going to hire?
The only good thing is that after an 0-4 start, he will be fired at the end of the season.
