Top 60 Countdown: No. 12, S Randy Phillips

As we move ahead in our countdown in the Top 60 players at UM, we hit another veteran player who hasn't lived up to expectations: Safety Randy Phillips. Much like fellow senior Eric Moncur, Phillips' career has been plagued by injuries and personal sadness. Will he answer the bell now that his college career is nearing an end? The Hurricanes definitely hope he does.

Randy Phillips > What we heard about him on Signing Day '05: As a senior at the talent-rich Belle Glades Glades Central, Phillips proved to be one of the nation's best two-way players. As a running back, he ran for 710 yards and 11 touchdowns and recorded 57 tackles and four interceptions while playing safety and cornerback while playing in just nine games for a 12-1 team. He also averaged 35 yards a punt and and was sleected to the CaliFlorida Bowl. Rivals.com tabbed him the nation's seventh best safety while Scout.com had him 16th at his position. He picked UM over Florida and Florida State and was expected to help fill the shoes of talented corners Antrel Rolle and Kelly Jennings once they left.

> What he's done as a Cane: Phillips played in eight games as a true freshman for a team that reached the Peach Bowl and returned his sophomore season expected to be a starter. He started UM's first three, lost his job, then regained it for the final five games, compiling 30 tackles, 11 pass deflections and one interception. When he came back for his junior year in 2007, Phillips was expected to be UM's best corner. But after getting torched by Oklahoma, coach Randy Shannon moved him to safety. He finished with 34 tackles and two huge interceptions in UM's win at Florida State. Then, last season, he played in just two games after tearing his lateral collateral ligament in his left on the first play of the Texas A&M game. He received a medical redshirt and played mostly on the first team this spring alongside Vaughn Telemaque.

> What Eye On The U expects from him in '09: Phillips is another Canes player who has yet to live up to his hype. He welcomed his mid-career move from cornerback to safety because it would allow him to be more of a playmaker. That's exactly what the Hurricanes hope Phillips can finally be this year. Physically, his test scores are very impressive. He was timed running a 4.48 in the spring (10th fastest on the team) and led the Canes with highest vertical leap (39.5 inches). His strength numbers (308 power clean, 330 bench) are among the best on the team. One thing you can't question is his leadership. From freshmen like Ray Ray Armstrong to veterans like Chavez Grant, there probably isn't a player more leaned upon on defense than Phillips. If he stays healthy, I don't see why he won't finally be the player Miami thought they were getting.

Curse: While that may have been true thelast 2 years, the canes have always beeen tough on D.
Yeah. I guess Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips tackled like ---ssies. That's why they are in the NFL. Can youname 2 Gator D backs curently in the NFL, let alone that played in the superbowl? LOL. YOu are a sad sad excuse for a human.

On another note, UF just paid Nurban the Liar 24 Million over 6 yrs. So much for the bad economy eh? So much for the state being cash strapped eh?
I don't ever want to hear any of you libs out there whining about how much corporation executives make, etc, etc. Now, I have no problem with this, he deserves it, even though he is a slime bag. Message to the U- we live in a different world now. Its all about $.

24 Million for Nurban the Liar- That's 1 Million for every arrest! Way to reward your leadership, UF trustees. Man! Those red-nks in Ga-ville are a trip.

firstttttttttttttttttt...

He hasn't lived up to the hype because Randy Shannon SCREWED HIM by playing him at CB. If RP had gone to ANY other school he'd have been a SAFETY from DAY 1. Only Shannon was DUMB enough to play him at CB.

Phillips can't tackle and he can't cover. He shouldn't be ranked anywhere above 30 on this countdown. How many big plays went right over, through, next Phillips last year???

The fact that he is penciled in as a starter should be an indication that we aren't back yet.

I love hearing Urban Meyer did this and Urban Meyer did that in his coaching career.

When really its all Tebow. Urban should give Tebow half of that money because without him he would be an average coach.

We will see how great Urban Liar is when Tebow leaves.

I have never seen a team that relied so much on one player like the gators with Tebow.

Why are we even talking about the Gayturds here?

And ms "...we need a new coach"....shut up. Shannon was trying to get the guy on the field. At safety, in those years, he didnt stand a chance.

I cant stand you posers pretending to be Canes fans. If you're with the team, you're with the team...period. If not, go find somebody to tweet.

All these names popping up asking for Randy to be fired now, I want to see what you say in January 2010.

The U is back...whether our own "fans" believe it or not.

Phillips is another Canes player who has yet to live up to his hype.

Understatement of the last 4 years; Manny, you also forget to mention he got burned badly by Darius Heywood-Bey as well.

Time for a new season and hopefully a better outcome.

While all you gayturd fans think meyer will be at UF for another 4 years, think again. Signing this contract was just a way to get all the Notre Dame rumors quieted. He may pull a Bobby Petrino and leave after this year anyways. Hell the buyout on the contract is only $500,000. After all he is a liar just like Bobby Petrino.

I hope for a Tavares Gooden type senior year. B+ performance that puts him into the league in the 3rd or 4th round.

66 tackles, 4 ints...

He looks good to me. I think he'll do well.

fans have to have swagger also,if you are fans you will show up to at least one game a year. c'mon, tickets start at $19. I make $450 a week ,have 2 kids ,live 300 miles away and bought season tickets.ANDI have 4 tickets to fsu.I say we go undefeated.CANE `TIL I DIE.

OH YEA , TO the canehaters that cant seem to stop logging in. When the state hits us with a state tax on our weekly paychecks and tebow is gone, dont complain, you are paying for urban.doesn'nt sound so good now does it.Down withover paid state employee's.

No this is as undeserved as humanly possible. He's one of the state's highest paid if not the highest paid employee in the state. You're damn right us "libs" are going to complain. This current financial situation in our state is what happens when you've had GOP supermajorities for years on end and finally now they just have a near supermajority.

Let's leave the politics out of this blog shall we?

sidcane,

The problem is we have the Canes, Dolphins, Marlins, Heat and if U like Hockey that's also available. You can't afford to go to them all so you have to pick and choose.

I just went to a Marlins game w/ a friend, it cost me $10 for parking $24 for two tickets, $32 for 4 beers and $10 for hotdogs. You will go broke if you did this all the time.

But, at the top of my list are the Canes so I will usually go to a few games each year.

There is no "storm" U dumb clown.
Your program just sux.

It's all about Duhhh rhetoric

He's looked bad against Malcolm Kelly, heyward-bey, and Craig Davis, oh and Harry Douglas. Everyone else he was basically shuttng down. Means he wasn't an elite CB, but still was better than most. It's no shame in getting beat by the best when u are playing out of position.

ask the gators about our storm, we had them bracing hard through 3 quaters, and with a fres./ soph. team...you know, dont you ...you know! CANE `TIL I DIE.

Buy tickets!

Go Canes!

"yeah, until that joker ref overturned the on -field call of that non-catch by Louis Murphy!!! LOL."

"I could only see Murphys catch live but my friends told me the tv announcers were talking about how obvious it was that Murphy was out of bounds."

Yet another Blinded Cane Stooge ...

Murphy was # 9 U dipsheets .

It was # 16 Moore that made that grab and he WAS in bounds ( ball control + 1 elbow -'s catch ). The Champs COVERED and U still lost by 23 points U Underdogs ...

fiddy/fiddy , U non crossing the fiddy Tards ... That be U.

now go do what U do best, and kick another field goal .

I am a lifelong, die hard Canes Fan, but I am so tired of reading about players who have never produed on the field but have fast 40 times and impressive weight lifting stats.

These guys can all go out for the track or weight lifting teams.

The only true measure of football talent is production on the field. No production, no talent. Very simple.

F'ing A ++++ !!! WIN Or Be Gone !!!

If healthy, RP will have a good year. Glad to have him back and I agree with sidcane...go to the games and support this team. Get on the bandwagon NOW. Go Canes!

Manny,

If this is our 12th best player we are in trouble... You can say whatever you want about talent coming out of high school, but judging the guy on his collegiate performance one questions why you believe he will make such a big stride this year. I have never seen a player get so badly burnt as RP when we lost to Oklahoma. Yes, it was not all his fault, but after getting burnt once or twice I would think that a corner is smart enough to get more physical on the line of scrimmage. I think this is a do or die year for the whole program. If they don't show improvement I think Randy is gone.

since Gator fans don't like to talk about Miami's rich 25 year past (UM went 6-2 vs UF since 1985).

Lets talk about the 2000's and since 2000 to present, the record would be Miami 4 Florida 1, Miami 1 NC and FL 2 NC. I guess it was about time Florida won a football game against the Canes. For two seasons Miami was beating Florida with their own quarterback recruit. Then in 2008 a talented youthful Miami (how many freshman were playing for UM?) team was in the game with the NC Gators until the four quarter. So, if Florida fans want to hear a Miami fan congrats, well here you go.

Congrats to UF for beating Miami for the first time in the new century while Miami fielded a starting lineup full of Freshman (#1 recruiting class).

Now that is over, Miami Fans break out the warning flags there is a storm coming that just might make the 2001 NC team look beatable.

i liked RP wen he was yung lockin down fsu recievers but after the oklahoma game i lost all faith in him but that quarterback put all passes on the money...hard to defend

Maybe the light will go on with R. Phillips last chance sinking in or maybe the scheme will allow the playmakers to play.

It wasn't just Oklahoma, Phillips got beaten by everyone. Don't give me this position change stuff because he couldn't even tackle out there.

Phillips is a scrub of the highest magnitude. Why is he this far up in the countdown?

Phillips and Chavez Grant are garbage, I don't care how many weights they can throw up or how well they know the playbook, keep them on special teams. I'm sick of these guys, keep them out!!!!

Let McGee and Armstrong play in the secondary, they'll pick things up as the get more reps. We've got one month to coach these guys up to get ready to play, let them play.

(sigh) I'm sure Randy Phillips is a great guy...but he couldn't cover toast with butter! I have to agree that I can't believe he is this high on the countdown! I'm pretty sure he still has nightmares of Sam Bradford throwing touchdowns over his head! And Bradford was just a redshirt freshman...Maybe Phillips can prove me wrong this season and I hope he does. Coach Shannon benched Marve for Jacory when he couldn't get the job done...who will replace Phillips when his side of the field accounts for 4 touchdowns? Randy Phillips is a liabilty!

Phillips will do a fine job this year at safety. The people here with a sour taste in their mouth only remember Phillips the CB. I like RP the "safety". If the critics would look back to the UF game you will see Phillips played a very good game. He was robbed on that play when he didn't allow the WR to gain possesion inbounds and they ruled it a catch. Go to the 2:40 mark to see this clear oversight by the officials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC4IdCD7z14&feature=fvw

I agree that Chavez Grant is a better spectator and shouldn't grace the playing field.

Thank you Canesjunkie, Jtime, and all the other R. Phillips haters. I know Randy personally and know what kind of heart he has.Ya'll hating on him will fire him up and make him play the way he's capable. But please don't jump on his bandwagon when you see him snapping on the field this season.

That'sm right. I have the photo of the receiver, and it was Louis Murphy you moron, and he came down with the ball.

Too bad the elbow was on the line.

On field ref, who as a matter of fact was RIGHT FRIGGIN THERE, called it OOB. Only to be over turned by the refs upstairs. Jeremy Foley was caught upstairs in a bathroom with his pants to his knees next to the video refs. Coinkeedink? I think not!

Listen- you who are a redneck, tobacco chewing rednk gator fan from Alachua county- yeah you who posts on this blog-

UF beat a very young UM team at the D(swa)mp. Ok. yey> be happy>

Bottom line is you like all other turds sound scrred. scared.

That'sm right. I have the photo of the receiver, and it was Louis Murphy you moron, and he came down with the ball.

Too bad the elbow was on the line.

What did I say bad about the Gators to be called a moron? My opinion, it was a missed called. You're too stupid to express yourself without casting judgement. You need to read the NCAA rule about being on the line to reveal the true moron.

That'sm right. I have the photo of the receiver, and it was Louis Murphy you moron, and he came down with the ball.

I guess Murphy switched jerseys to # 16 for that grab and then back to #9 when he caught the TD later in the game ...

The 2008 Gators were YOUNGER Than Duh U !!!

Any more ExcUses ??? Get'em ready, U'll need them this year ...

cane till i die....

I hope Randy Phillips doesn't read this or need me to get jacked up.

I'm sure he's a nice kid and hope I am wrong. But as an impartial person, I've seen him miss way too many tackles to think he's going to tear it up this year.

Too bad the elbow was on the line .

Posted by: Canebrake2009 | August 04, 2009 at 04:37 PM

Wrong yet again ! Slow mo ground level endzone shot showed his elbow WAS clearly in with control... 1 elbow ='s 1 foot ...

Refs fault Ur Anemic Second Half offense amassed 4 yards rushing and 25 yards passing and 2... TWO!!! First downs without EVER crossing the 50 yrd. Line ???

The refs, Nix, we were young, it was hot, whaa whaa whaa blah blah blah .

Hey Art, what ever happened to all those Cane Honks that were all charged up last year about that being the season of ***No ExcUses*** ???

guess it didn't take huh ?

The Miami Hewrald police allows racist crap from this redneck and censors me for saying idiot redneck. Figure that from a liberal news outlet

Mommy mommy can I buy a tshirt that says " I have a man crush on Tim Tebow"? Please PLease?

yeah little Bubba, but eat your grits first.

And by the way, son, The U WAS younger than UF-who sacked the melon head? Forston- a freshman. Spence? A freshman. Who was the QB? Harris, a freshman. see ya. and based on ESPN's cupckae stitsitcs study, play more teams that are harder. Not like the chicken shi--ts that your team has always been since they decided they weren't men enough to play the U year in and year out-- Smart- That is the reason they wouldnt wnat to play us this year. LOL. Have fun with CH Southern and Troy. oooooohh how scary.

Arguing with you is like a dog chasing his tail
