Top 60 Countdown: No 3, RB Graig Cooper

With the Canes participating in their third closed scrimmage of the fall and school set to begin Wednesday, I figured this was the perfect time to wrap up the countdown of the Top 60 players at Miami. By now, you've figured out who the final three are. Here's why Graig Cooper is No. 3.

022409_graig_cooper > What we heard about him on Signing Day '07: Cooper graduated from high school in 2005 as Mr. Football in Tennessee after leading Melrose High to the state title with 2,123 yards and 30 touchdowns. But he wasn't academically eligible to qualify for college and headed to prep school at Milford Prep where he maintain a strong relationship with former coach Larry Coker. At Milford, Cooper ran for 1,327 yards and 15 touchdowns (averaging 12.5 yards per carry) in a backfield that also featured current Philadelphia Eagles rookie LeSean McCoy. He stuck with the Canes despite Coker's firing.

> What he's done as a Cane: Since his arrival, Cooper has led the Canes in rushing and scoring (11 TDs). In 2007, he shared the Rookie of the Year award with Orlando Franklin after finishing with 682 yards and five touchdowns. It was the third most rushing yards by a true freshman behind Clinton Portis (838) and Javarris James. As a sophomore, he was named UM's Most Versatile Player after rushing for 841 yards and catching 29 passes for 113 yards and scoring six times (four rushing, one receiving, one punt return). He broke the century mark three times and carried it a career-high 24 times for for 131 yards in the OT win at Virginia.

> What Eye On The U expects from him in '09: Cooper had a boot on his foot last week for a day, but was back out at practice making moves and showing his teammates why he's still most capable running back on the team. At 6-feet, 205-pounds and 4.37 speed in the 40 (he timed as the third fastest on the team this spring), Cooper has all the ingredients to be even better this year. But the question is if he'll be able to breakaway from the rest of UM's backfield. Coach Randy Shannon has been quoted as saying he'd like for one back to do most of the primary work. Nobody is better fit to do that than Cooper, who has the best hands out of the backfield, picks up the blitz the best and has averaged 5.2 yards a carry in his career. Personally, if he can stay healthy, I expect Cooper to reach his goal of reaching 1,000 yards this year and being a serious contender for ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

FYI... Seeing how I didn't get a lot of time off this summer covering the Marlins, I decided to take this week off (knowing the Canes start prepping for Florida State next week). So, there will be no live Q&A today at 2 p.m. or any updates from practice later this week. Our Susan Miller Degnan will be out there covering it all when practice resumes Thursday morning. I'll be back out there beginning Monday.

Just when I was feeling good about our team and what Randy was doing he opens his retarded mouth and Cook transfers, knowing eventually he would pass Harris with good coaching. I'm all for competition and everything but what I want to know is just how open is or was the competitions for jobs. Shannon as we all know wanted Harris to unseat Marve and be the starter. For what reason I have no idea other than to pacify Aldarius and harris's other buddies. Harris looked good against Duke and Virginia, two of the worse teams in our league. He never gave Marve the backing a QB needs to let loose and play. I have nothing against Jacory but it's pathetic how Shannon and every one makes him out to be so great when all he has done is beat Duke and UVA. Lets face it and just hope this is Shannon's last year because it's time to quit screwing around with these cheap fits and get a real coach in here that knows what he's doing. And by the way Dorsey had McKinnie, Romberg and others to protect him when Ethenic Sands was our backup not the line we have now. That comparison is just plain stupid.

Who's our Scout Team Q.B. ?

Hey, who was Dorsey's back up? Can't name him can you.

Why not?

Because, Dorsey never needed him and Dorsey was smaller than Harris.

Watch, "The Whip" will use this as a great set up opportunity to kill the blitz. Big offensive yards off the blitz!

J-12 will be fine.

And he will set QB records for yrds, td's etc. when all is said and done.

Courage Whimps! Go Canes!

U grab handle and pull Cane Fan ...

Hey Coach Shannon ... Now might be a good time for a ...

TIME - OUT !!!

You guys are overreacting.

We never saw enough of Taylor Cook to assume he would be better than Jacory Harris and Cannon Smith looks too much like Joe Zagacki to be a good QB.

Mandich made a good point about UM QB's...we've lost 3 in the past 8 months.

Lebatard made an even better point....if Randy Shannon was white and 3 black QB's left the program, people would be going insane.

Personally, I don't blame these guys for leaving. 3 years is a long time to rot on the bench.

Lets face it, Shannon made his deal with Harris. HE got all the NW kids to come with him. His future now rests on Harris.

What gets me is all the so called Cane fans jumping on the blog talking about oh were screwed, or fire Randy Shannon. Oh so now Randy is wrong for saying its a competition for the backup quaterback spot, all the man said was that as of right now he has no clear cut number 2 guy at quarterback. Hell if they like Marve dont want to compete for their position well good riddance. Thats why we have mediocre all this time not recruiting kids that are pushing each other by competing. More power to Randy for bringing back the competition tradition. And for all you guys wondering or claiming that Jacory was handed the job based upon his fact he quarterbacked at Northwestern ask yourself this when you watched him Marve during last year who looked like they had the best chemistry with the offense last year, and who moved the ball besides taking off running every 5 seconds...thats right Jacory. Him starting instead of rotating him in the second quarter, last year we could have easily one two more games. Plain and simple this is the University of Miami, this is not Duke or freaking Purdue we dont babysit whining quarterbacks you wait your turn or hit the freaking road. Ask Testaverde, ask Erickson, ask Toretta, yeah get the picture two future Heisman quarterbacks that had to ride the pine until it was their time to lead the U. And to the guy saying Dorsey had Romberg, and McKinnie, yeah he also was put on his behind (getting sacked in his first year starting 2000. Let the kids play this year before you start your suicide chants alright, either that or root for another team. Win Lose or Draw I Will Always Root and Rep This U!

Here in LIES the problem.

Hurricanes notebook: Coach Randy Shannon says backup quarterback spot still open
Click-2-Listen
By JORGE MILIAN

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Monday, August 24, 2009

CORAL GABLES — Miami coach Randy Shannon said after spring practice that redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Cook was the backup to starter Jacory Harris.

But following this morning's practice, Shannon said the No. 2 job remains open. The other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster are sophomore Cannon Smith and true freshman A.J. Highsmith.

"It's a battle," Shannon said.

Reminded that he declared Cook the backup following spring practice, Shannon responded: "I never said that. You guys said that. I said he was No. 2 after the spring, and when summertime comes, it's open season again.

"It's always open season when you're (No. 2). That doesn't change."

This is not good .

Jesus ! Anyone can see that Cook was the No. 2 Q.B. ! Why can't Shannon just say he is ?

And we'd atleast have a serviceable backup in an emergency.

just a little foresight please Coach !

Ray Ray can also play QB... Shannon should make him one of the back-ups and start giving him reps. We'll be alright with Cory, Ray Ray and AJ. GO CANES!!!

Yeah he would make a good daul threat QB. But I'm focused on FSU and game planning them. Anyone knows who their star players are on both sides of the ball? Is Myrone Rolle gone?

Hey, who was Dorsey's back up? Can't name him can you.

Too bad Jacory doesn't have Dorsey's O-Line ...

JROD, Plain and simple, these two guys didnt want to wait there turn b/c Shannon was a realist and honest with the, letting them know who the starter was. If there was any reason why players dont want to wait they're turn here its b/c they arent use to a Black coach being there leader as well as a Black QB thats seen as more capable, athletic, and smarter and game ready. not too many white kids have had to deal with this kind of pressure, being a minority, and the underdog. The mental strain may be just too much.

Mr. Harris, I Shall Release A Barrage Unto U, That The Likes Of U And Urs, Have Never, Nor Will See Again ...

Mickey

They blitz and reblitz us, we are going to eat them up. Please, Mickey and Ga Tech, blitz us.

Dorseys back up was Ethenic Sands and that other black QB, who came in for a little while when after his 5th sack in the Fiesta Bowl, Kenny went down temporarily...but he came back and brought us back from 10 down. Ok not just him, but he was the leader.

All this negative blogging is cr-p. the haters are wishing ill upon the U. Thats fodder for Jacorry and the U athletes. Fuel to the fire. They have something to prove.

Its like if Teblow goes down..or Ponder...or the Ohio State dude... who are the back ups? Nobody knows, nobody cares.

Maddog Mandich just TORE U a new one Cane Fans ...

mandich ultimately works for the Miami dolphins …
his motto: whose bread I eat … whose song I sing

perhaps, AJ outperformed the quitters …

CUT & RUN

the source is right whether a moron like green will admit it or not. This isn't high school ball where you just plug in your next best athlete. U actually have to be able to throw the ball consistently to win. And on any other team Highsmith would be a saftey or running back. There's no way he's better than Cook.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_college_hurricanes/2009/08/did-the-qb-situation-really-change-that-much-.html

Taylor Cook's high school coach, Brad Dumont, said Cook stills respects Shannon, but did say there was some concern when AJ Highsmith began receiving so many reps in practice.
-- sunsentinel’s shandel richardson

how do you know?

UNEDUCATED GUESS

simple Shannon wanted Highsmith to be #2 irregardless of how good Cook was progressing. Kinda hard to grow and progress when the boss (for now anyway) holds U back.
Thats how I know.
GENIOUS U ARE NOT

A number of "stars" have transfered out of the UM program over the years, but not one has ever made a major impact on thier new school let alone nationally. Not to say anything bad about Cook, but Rice is probably a better place for him than Miami and the ACC. It does put UM in a bind for back up depth but it makes no sense to hyper ventilate. PS Testeverde was ready to transfer out until Kosar told him to stay put because he was leaving in his Jr. year to the NFL. --Transfers are not a new thing...and certainly no reflection on RS. We will see if Marve does anything at Purdue...or if he even starts next year. He is just as likley to be suspended for something stupid before then.
