Canes ranked, Harris (x2) earn ACC honors

The University of Miami regained the nation's attention Monday night with a starry effort from Jacory Harris.

Brandon Harris Tuesday, both the Canes and their new leader began receiving some props for their come-from-behind win Tallahassee. UM climbed into The Associated Press Top 25 rankings at No. 20 and the USA Today Coaches' Poll at No. 22. Harris, meanwhile,  was one of six players -- and two Canes -- selected as ACC players of the week at their respective positions.

Harris, selected as the ACC's offensive back of the week, threw for a career-high 386 yards and completed 21-of-34 passes for two touchdowns and ran for another score in leading UM to the win 18th-ranked Florida State. Making his first career start against the Seminoles and third overall, Harris’ 386 yards were the most by a Miami quarterback in the storied rivalry between the in-state foes and the 10th-highest single-game total in school history. He capped the night by leading Miami on a six-play and 59-yard scoring drive for the eventual game-winning touchdown.

Sophomore cornerback Brandon Harris was selected as the defensive back of the week. Harris had a career-high nine tackles (three solo) and broke up two passes against Florida State -- including one in the waning seconds to preserve the victory.

UM coach Randy Shannon met with reporters Tuesday at UM to recap Monday night's win. Our Bill Van Smith will have a story later tonight. But here are a few notes...

> Shannon insisted Jacory Harris elbow "was just fine" and insisted there were no major injuries suffered against FSU. Shannon mentioned receiver Aldarius Johnson suffered a groin injury, but didn't go futher into detail. He LaRon Byrd was injured in the first quarter, but returned to action. Shannon didn't say whether or not Byrd or Johnson would be available against Georgia Tech.

> Shannon said he was told by doctors there is a good possibility safety Vaughn Telemaque and defensive back Ryan Hill will be able to play against Georgia Tech.

A little help please...

I'm in the middle of a bet with a friend.....and need the win - loss history of
Miami vs UF
Miami vs FSU
and
UF vs FSU.

Many thanks - in advance........

We won that game as a team, but moreso b/c of the instant success and pts the offense was able to provide. The offense is nite and day from last yr and it was obvious to everyone. The greatest addition to the team and decision by Shannon was adding Mark Whipple. Great Coaching and play calling by Whipple. And not one bubble screen!

i don't understand how all of you really bash shannon for calling the squib kicks? they almost returned two, we had to do that! the kick just wasn't the best kick at the time. what i'm pissed off about is the lack of any pass rush. i watched the linebackers line up in the same spot all night, ten yards off the ball! those lineman didn't have to think about anything, there wan't even a pretend blitz. it was almost like watching a shortstop, they just stood there and watched the play come to them. you cannot win in ths league without blitzing. you can't expect our corners to cover that long. if not for that one sack, i don't think their qb hit the ground. i can't even blame the defense for this. that was just a horrible defensive game plan. but man was that offense exciting! GO CANES!

ps. please bring the blitz with you next game randy.

Manny, keep up the good work, your coverage of the Canes is super. To anyone who left a negative comment above,if you saw the FL.ST. game you would have to agree that the Canes are much improved from last year. The offense was effective and the defense played tuff. Although it is just one game, Randy Shannon deserves a lot of credit for the improvement and before anyone starts knocking him, why don't we give him and his staff a chance. Monday night was the 1st game of the year, give the team a chance to grow before making any judgements on how good they are or will be this year. Remember, it's still a young team.

How about this for an interesting aside:

Looks like someone in the ESPN camp gave Jacory a 3rd place vote on their Heisman watch (and it wasn't ACC blogger Heather Dinich). My guess is Herbie.

Game balls go to J.Harris, L. Hankerson, T Benjamin & B. Harris.

Lovett & the specail teams coach have some serious work to do!
Don't let the offense down, there counting on you!

..

So in 8 days Ur 1-1 ... then what ?

Then i'll be proud that we have the nuts to book 4 straight top 20 teams, first time in 15 years it's been done. But hey,Charleston Southern.

WHERE ARE ALL THE FSU FANS AT NOW I GUESS THEY STOP TALKIN TRASH ON MIAMI BLOG SINCE MIAMI SPANKD THEM NOLES LOL

GO CANES

Brandon Harris was flaged late and played too far off the ball, but was money on a couple of pass plays. This is what we got him for. great game

Jacory needs no comment.

Does anyone know whats up with Torrian Wilson picking Stanford over Miami?

Some people make a difference in their communities. They speak to kids, they donate money to causes that benefit kids, they selflessly give to others.

Other people give away Miami magnets.

Jacory
Harris already 8th on Heisman ranking on ESPN!:
http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman09/index

He's be first if he'd had any pre-season hype.
but the award can be his this year!

Everyone's talking about the squib kicks, but we were having a problem against their return guy... I agreed with the squib, just not that short; squib it to the 25 not the 50 yard line!!!

However, pay attention to the game the next time its played on classic...

FSU squib kicked the ball after their last score as well; there were just as concerned with our return!!!

Watch it at around 4 min on the clock...

I heard 86 was going to blow up The Swamp on 9/11, but he overslept!!!

YOU'RE A TRUE PATRIOT "PLAY"! YOUR COUNTRY CAN NEVER REPAY YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THE QUEEN!

About what I expected and close to what I said Whipple would do with this talent.
GREAT GAME GREAT WIN!

Easily - 14 points left on the field . . . and it's 52-34. No biggie.

Below are 2 plays that easily should have added 14 points to the score for THE U.

Play 1) Cross Grain Slant to (TE)Epps. With Epps it worked great for a TE. But wait till they throw to Cooper or Travis on this play
. . . it's TD all the way.

Play 2) The RB Circle to James that Jacory rushed the pass on. James was wide open with clear sailing to the end zone.

This was pretty tame for a Whipple game plan. In other words . . .

WE Ain't Seen Nothing YET!

Go Canes!

My my Kendrick, that infected molar must really be uncomfortable. Here's a UM foam finger. Now run along, I have a huge box of tshirts to give away to less fortunate children before kickoff.

I don't know, the $8,000,000.00 Jumbotron's at The Swamp will go a long way to fight illiteracy in Gainesville! Not to mention the 150 employees that UF just let go!

LOOK AT THE PRETTY PICTURES!

I havent heard anyone say this .... but I think that when Miami had 1st and goal at FSU 3 yard line with 1:52 to play ..... Bowden intentionally let Miami score quickly ....

Othewise ... Miami could have taken 3 or 4 cracks at the endzone and used up the entire clock

This way .... FSU had 1:51 left to march down the field and win .... AND THEY ALMOST DID

Is anybody gonna ask Shannon about those dumb short kicks in the last quarter? He almost cost us the game, and he looked like a deer in the headlights... Three D timeouts in the first half... Ive never really been down on Shannon, but he almost cost us the game...

Canadian Devils Fan;

Here's the deal:

1) Wieclaw is supposed to handle the kick-offs he is not ready. Will he ever be ready? Who knows.

2) Bosher has been working EP's and FG's. So, is best kick-off effort was getting the ball to the 12 yd line on average. And FSU's Reid was averaging 33 yd's on those returns, which put the ball on the 45.

3) When Bosher would pouch kick FSU's Reid was only getting the ball to the 35. But, on the our last kick FSU snuck Reid up to get the kick and his return was to the 50.

Yes, we need a guy to kick off. There has to be someone - who, at worst, can kick the ball VERY HIGH and get it somewhere between the 20 and 30 forcing a fair catch. What is that 40 or 50 yd's in the air?

They should be able to solve is problem.

First step get T-Mac and Hill back, special teams needs them as does our defense. Second step practice, practice, practice!

Go Canes!

Awwww poor little Camaroshon. You gots one leg shorter den duh other. Here, have some helmet shaped post it notes, they green and orange.

Camaroshon? I almost spit out my coffee!

Go 'canes!

Sorry mike lubell. But, no coach would ever allow that. This is what is know as "Conspiratorial Fan Think".

Bowden knew if the U scores 3 points it's a tie game and they would get last licks at a game winning field goal.

He also knew that the U was in the top 3 of red zone defenses last year.

And I think I just saw a team defend it's goal line on 7, yes count them 7 consecutive plays from the 2 yrd line or less to preserve victory. Did U get a chance to see that game?

Go CANES!

However, pay attention to the game the next time its played on classic...

trust i paid attention to the whole game and recorded it , but you are rite and CANES FAN FOREVER we should have at least kicked it deep and high to force a fair catch. yea they did kick the squib ONE time though while we did it more than once hell FSU even kicked it twice to coop it may have been a peanlty the first time ,but FSU still kicked it to him the on the do over. i just wanted to give our special teams a chance to make a play.

i think the reason why we did not blitz as much as we would like was due to the obvious which was injuries. DVD,HILL,TELMANQUE,MONCUR, AND OJOMO will do that to a team we had to rely on shields to be the starter in DVD place and i think the coaching staff did not want to give up long TD passesand leave sam on an island. i gurantee our DEF will be alot better once we get 4 ouf of the 5 back and healthy.

Manny,

How does Stanford pluck Torrian Wilson out of our backyard? Would appreciate it if you could investigate the story behind this...

When a kid picks Stanford, Duke, Vandy, Harvard, etc., UM didn't lose them, they were never coming! As hard as it is for some of us to believe, some of these kids acually go to school for an education!

Stanford is one of the hardest schools in the country to get admitted to, football player or not. I wish him well!

Go 'canes!
