Canes reel in Gainesville High corner Davis

For those of you looking for the first signs of recruiting success after UM's 3-1 start, here you go: Gainesville High cornerback Devont'a Davis decided about an hour ago he wants to be a Miami Hurricane.

Devont'a Davis is considered a Rivals and ESPN.com three-star recruit The 6-1, 180-pound senior gave UM assistants Micheal Barrow and defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff the call, admitting he's fallen in love with the Hurricanes despite growing up a die-hard Gators fan.

"My family just really wanted me to wait things out, see how I felt, make sure I was making the right decision," said Davis, who had been flirting with the idea of committing to UM since teammate and star linebacker Kevin Nelson committed to the Canes two weeks after school ended in June.

"I'm a Hurricane now. I feel like Florida missed the boat on me. I'm always going to be a Gators fan. But I'm wearing orange and green from now on."

The Gators never formally offered Davis, who passed on offers from FIU, Arkansas, UCF, South Carolina, Iowa State, Rutgers and Tennessee to pick UM. Davis, who said he has four interceptions and 35 tackles this season, is rated a three-star recruit by both Rivals and ESPN.com.

Gainesville High coach Ryan Smith said Davis is also averaging 35 yards on kickoff returns and said the Canes are getting a player who did an outstanding job shutting down Ocala Trinity Catholic's Kadron Boone, a four-star recruit headed to Texas Tech, earlier this season.

"If you look at him, he looks like my cousin Demarcus [Van Dyke]," Nelson said. "He's 6-2, got long arms. He's a tall corner. He plays with a lot of passion. He can hit even though he's between 170 and 180. He can tackle, he can catch. He's gotten way better from last year. All summer when we were in workouts, all he would talk about was that Trinity Catholic game. He said all summer he was going to shutdown Kadron Boone. I said OK, tighten up. He came into that game and shut him down. He held him to 59 yards receiving on six catches. Normally, that man goes for 100, 200 yards. [Davis] can play."

The commitment is the 19th for the Canes, who are looking to sign between five to seven more players. One player counted in UM's class is a silent commitment.

Davis and Nelson are the first two players UM has recruited from Gainesville High since Clinton Portis. Davis told me Portis visited his alma mater this summer and talked to the players about the benefit of playing for UM.

"He told us how the Gators really didn't want him either," Davis said. "I think it's funny how God works."

Davis said he plans to attend UM's game Saturday against Florida A&M.

> For those of you clamoring about the Gators getting commitments this weekend from Booker T. Washington defensive end Lynden Trail and receiver Quinton Dunbar, I was told by two UM sources the Hurricanes turned Trail down when he tried to jump on the bandwagon two weeks ago and Dunbar stopped being recruited after he decommitted from UM this summer.

> Here is the link to the audio interviews from this afternoon. Included among them: Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, Defensive coordinator John Lovett, coach Randy Shannon, receivers Leonard Hankerson and Aldarius Johnson, safety Ray Ray Armstrong, cornerback Brandon Harris, linebacker Colin McCarthy and fullback Mike James.

What about QB? Do we have a succession plan for future heisman winner JH???

We need work back to QB U....

manny,

with the te and cb postion those are 2 areas where a hs stud could come compete for a started job next year wheres the stud at?

theyll prolly get bridgewater from nw in the 2011 class if he qualifies academically

clinton portis all over again....we'll take em

There is a rumor floating around. My son is a friend of Major Wright's, and apparently Andre Debose is looking to transfer from UF. He thinks he should've gone to the U with Armstrong and Dye.

Can anyone confirm?

cane grad: to answer your question U know that stephen morris kid is not bad at all. he has the ideal height for a qb 6"3 and has a arm with the feet to get out the pocket. the one thing UM loves about him is that he is a throwing QB first and he uses his feet as his last option.

a few scouts said that stephen morris should have been rated higher but, owell. i think we all want bridgewater that kid is a stud probably a 5 star QB. i hope we get bridge for 2011.

I was just reading what everyone has said. U all make great points about the silent. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it's Gio Bernard. This is a kid who doesn't talk alot about recruiting and is someone UM wanted from the start. It's just a guess.

Manny says it's a BIG TIMER so it could even be Ego Ferguson.

I've never heard of the Debose story. I don't think it'll happen though because he'd have to sit out ANOTHER year. I could be wrong but isn't that the case with someone who's even a medical redshirt?

can i ask why miami turned down trail? he seems to have the size, the upside, the production, the ability, and the BTW ties to UM.

Posted by: ooster | October 07, 2009 at 02:05 AM

The size? He's 6'7 195 and if you see him in person he looks like a flag pole. Yes, he has the size to play in 2 years but the U will be ready to win it next year!

I am with Carol City Cane = Clements.

Even Sponge Bob is a fan. Watch...

That video is great!

TE position not many top HS. TE's left around the country maybe the U can get a player and move him to TE from another position.

Wow this is a great article and helpful posts.

Where's that doof who started off yesterday's post with his rant on UF taking Dade-County players????

Oh that's right he a Gator fan, which explains why he is hiding under his cubicle with his tail between his legs.

Inside the U on ESPN.com i think is saying Deonte Thompson is the UF WR thinking of transfering to the U.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..... C a n e s, CANES!

Where did you read that regarding Deonte Thompson? I heard something like that but that it was in '07. Here's one of many '07 articles regarding his possible transfer to UM: http://insidetheu.com/news/viewnews.php?v=46ee01e4c941b

Is he RE-considering transferring to The U? I'd be surprised since he's been getting playing time this season. He didn't play last game because of an injury but is slated to start against LSU on Saturday.

GO CANES!!!

Old article I think.....

Why don't we recruit Josh Shaw out of CA? The kid is a beast and is dying to play for The U

MANNY are we going to recruit Joshua Shaw after he said he want to hear from Miami? PLEASE RESPOND, THanks.

I've been hearing small rumblings that Steeter is thinking about transferring.

Has anuone else?

I doubt Luc is a silent commit, besides he already is 240lbs and Da "U" likes LBs that are smaller and quicker, plus this kid will end up being 270 by the time he leaves. Travis Williams would be my guess, the LB from Virginia. When we get to 9 wins the bandwagon jumpers will all be singing a different tune then about the "U". Florida has been the flavor of the month for the last 3 to 4 years with these high schoolers but it will change when we come full circle this and especially next. We need O-Lineman and CBs worst than anything.

Street didnt look happy during the last game.
Also, I love how randy turns recruits down. That helps the chemsitry. Let them go play for FSU or Tennesse.

I don't see any reason to play Forston this week if he is sooo banged up. Rest him for the run down the stretch!

Debose is not coming to the U. It was someone being sarcastic on that site that is all.

dont worry about streeter he should start getting his p.t. ,,, these kids should understand about the competition they were playing ...the best kids play.. if were anything close to bringing the U back alot of kids should start seeing playing time in the next games so they get experience.. like it Used to be

Is it true that Jahrvis Best is transferring to tthe U?

Also to add to your conversation, Whipple hand selected Morris. I think he was also the kid at the Meechigan camp those coaches were raving about, too.

He's a beast??????? Have you ever seen him play? Typical couch recruiters who read crap but have never watched film in their life. Leave the recruiting to me!

I heard Ray Lewis has a class left to take at THE U, and will be enrolled this spring. He'll be at MLB next year.

Man I love this post manny. everybody got some real positive points. Wanna say real quick the players read manny blog y'all watch the celebrating after u score those refs robbed UGA. Then tried to make it up by calling LSU. That was terrible call. I love the opinions though. Never heard Matt Elam thinking bout tha U. I like Dior Mathis over Shaw. Clements could be the silent cause he seems like the most logical choice. U gotta admit though when Manny said big timer I automatically thought 5 star. If it's a big timer is clements that kind of player. I think it could somebody else like dunkley luc Elam dowling the kid committed to south Carolina but he might not be big enough. I just don't know who it could be. Joyner c green Reese all say the bowden situation will not affect them making a decesion. I gotta say it's dunkley or Luc. Gotta be a 5 star kid right?

Oh, it now appears Debose may go to UCF or USF, one of those.

manny you the best, always on top of your game.... loving my Canes, Randy is the best recruiter

I am sure he is not happy being inactive early, but he would be wise to stick around. He will get his opportunities later this year, but he has to understand that the guys ahead of him on the outside (Hank, Aldarious, Benjamin, and Byrd) are all extremely talented players with more experience than him. I hope he is patient enough to realize that he will get his chance to shine eventually, and does not fall into the trap of many Freshman that pout after not receiving playing time as an underclassman. Bottom line is if you want to play for a big time program, you have to understand that there is a natural pecking order and progression when it comes to PT.

That makes sense about Debose...i mean the kid hasnt played a down for UF and is sitting out after the hamstring surgery. So then he'll sit out another year with the transfer...makes complete sense.

When is national signing day?

love the recruiting talk!! we all know we are headed in the right direction, we just gotta push recruiting to make sure we stay there. the #1 class from 2 yrs. ago will only take us so far! i was not all that impressed with last years class after losing prince kent and byrce brown. this years class is just not looking that great to me. i would prefer gore over hall. i really hated to see under armor all american ol torrian wilson from miami go to stanford when we really need o-lineman. lotta good wr's in state this year, but i hope we get 1 or 2 outta dunkley, m.lee harris, and mccartney. gotta have jeff luc!! really sucks to have a need at cb and have #1 and #5 rated cb's at st. thomas and not even be in on them! i would also really like to get ol brandon linder and de corey lemonier, they are 4 star studs. i believe we get payne or grimes as the last corner, both good, but had hoped for better. lets keep talking recruiting, gotta get back and stay back!!!

That makes even more sense...sit out a year with a bad hammy, then sit out another and give up a guaranteed starting role at UF to go to UCF or USF? You do realize how dumb this scenario sounds right?

norm 4 keep in mind that the star rating system is overrated. yeah i know how you feel about keeping da local kids, but nowadays, many of these kids want to play right away. and u just cant do that at miami cuz of all the experience and talent on the field right now. PATIENCE is nonexistent at da moment and it is something that is desperately needed .

Posted by: Max | October 07, 2009 at 05:18 PM

He hates the scumbag Meyer and that's the reason for this extreme step.

I just cant see debose leaving after one year especially if he was told he would take harvins role that's like turning down a first rd selection

You guys don't get the big picture??? Lynden Trail turned down???? a guy from Hialeah 5 star recruit that even Trail said is playing much better than him and getting more love from Miami?????? silent commit? i think you got the answer now, why turn down a DE when your shorthanded especially coming next year, the answer is Lemonier on board, forget what was said about him enjoying his trip in Illinois, they're going nowhere with them especially after Zook boy is gone by next year, the U is coming and by the end of the year we'll be in the top 10 in recruiting! no.21 right now, don't worry about that, there's still 5 months til NSD!!!!!

Posted by: Imyahuckleberri | October 07, 2009 at 05:56 PM

Debose is not Harvin yet. Scum Meyer worked him hard in the summer and now his career is in jeopardy. He and Meyer apparently don't get along any more.

You know Shannon doesn't like transfers very much, so where else he can go now? USF or UCF seemed like a good choice.

This is again what I've heard. Like to be confirmed by a second source though.

Also keep in mind the loopholes in transferring rules. If one college has a course the other does not then they don't have to sit out. Happens all the time and most of these kids are undecided anyway.

I like that Randy isn't looking at ratings, he's recruiting athletes and football players from winning programs...we will be great for years to come

When is national signing day?

Posted by: rayraythetruth | October 07, 2009 at 05:18 PM

First to second week of February.

it is amazing the recruiting randy has done. If you look at our games, the guys who make the worst mistakes are the upperclassmen from Coker. Joe Joseph, Sam Sheilds, JOJO, Randy Phillips, Pipho, etc. I cant wait till these guys are gone.

R u saying debose wasn't going to be as good as harvin cause I believe he was. I just don't see somebody with a starting role transferring. plus I'm sure UF will block a transfer to the Canes. Nice rumor though. If Manny is right and they take one DE then I think it's JR Ferguson. Manny said Lemonier wants to play early and said UM too deep for him. Read the Tuesday chat and he answered about Lemonier. JR or David Perry takes the last lineman spot.

Also keep in mind the loopholes in transferring rules. If one college has a course the other does not then they don't have to sit out. Happens all the time and most of these kids are undecided anyway.

Posted by: 360Cane | October 07, 2009 at 06:06 PM

Can you provide an example of a recent big name transfer who did not sit out a year based on this rule?

VFmint...he was never worked hard...he came in to camp injured and they took it slow the entire time trying to rehab his hammy that he injured in a track meet. You are the one starting the rumor on multiple blogs, so good luck finding confirmation from anyone.

By the way Phillips is overrated. I love him but he sucks big time. I hope Ray Ray can win the starting role cause Phillips would not have delivered big hit after big hit. Matter of fact can anyone remember when Phillips made a big time impact on a game. Harris is a first rd guy jury still out on Tele but Phillips is graded out as average right now. Don't get off blocks and can't cover. Ray Ray should start

I love all the gator fans who were on here at the beggining of the season on here and call the iceman string bean and whatever yet it there qb who's the one that was injured first lol
