Carey, Canes provide Northwestern with lift

As Jacory Harris was walking off the interview stage last Saturday night against Oklahoma, a reporter filled him in on how his beloved Northwestern Bulls had been upset earlier that same evening by rival Booker T. Washington.

"You're lying," Harris fired back. "Man, you just ruined my whole weekend."

Jacory and his seven former high school teammates at UM made sure their weekend wasn't ruined again Thursday night. Along with UM coach Randy Shannon, assistants Micheal Barrow, Aubrey Hill, Clint Hurtt and Wesley McGriff, the Canes made their presence felt when Miami Northwestern took on rival Miami Central in a nationally televised showdown at FIU Stadium.

Jacory and the current Northwestern Canes didn't just cheer. They coached, spending most of the second half in huddles as their former teammatesrallied with 20 unanswered second half points beat the No. 1-ranked Rockets 22-14. Former Cane and current Dolphin Vernon Carey probably made the biggest splash when he stormed into the team's locker room at halftime and flipped over a Gatorade cooler during a fiery five minute speech.

Say what you want about the University of Miami's recruiting tactics in South Florida (they don't always get all the local stars) but they have a deep bond with Northwestern, the most talent rich program in the area every year. No local team has stocked the Canes with talent more than the 'West has over the past decade. And over the next few years, more Bulls will likely be headed UM's way.

Defensive tackle Todd Chandler has been a UM commitment for what feels like has been more than a year. Next on the list?

Probably senior receiver Michaelee Harris (6-2, 190), who hauled in nine passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns and looked every bit as good as the last Bulls receivers to head to UM. He says the Canes are among about a dozen schools (Louisville, Marshall, Nebraska, UM, FIU, UCF, West Virginia, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Kansas State are the others) he has offers from.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, just a junior, has every team in the country coveting him. But says he absolutely loves Mark Whipple's offense. Another junior to watch? Linebacker Lyndon Edwards (6-1, 190), who was all over the field for the 'West.

"There is something about being a Bull and being a Cane that has a connection," Chandler said. "It's the swagger, the confidence, the love for your teammates. You see it here when you're wearing the blue and gold and when you're there wearing the green and orange."

First here too. Thanks twitter.

I love hearing this.....the key to regruiting right there!!!!!

YEAH REGRUITING IS KEY:)LMFAO

Great story Manny and awesome to see the passion is back.

Go Canes.

There is something to say about Dade talent (not just NW's, but Central's too) that brings in Shannon and USF's coach and others to this game. Nurban the liar wasnt there, but he was at the St Thoma Aquinas game. Probably for the better, Little Urban whould not have done well deep inside the 305.

That said, let's not get too caught up with this NW and UM connection. There is plent a-talent spread across the state, and spread across the country and coaches need to take their Miami NW blinders off and recognize talent in the south, talent in Cali, talent up north: for ex. Big hogs form the O-line need to be acquired from the farming states, eg Nebraska and Texas, like we used to, even Canada. While of course, the skill players need not come from anywhere else but the 305 and the 954.

respond to laz: nothing better to do, trailer park called they would like there trash back!!!!!! get a life!!! lmfao, ignorant

I hope the U staff saw some talent...it was sure missing from the TV set...looked liked street ball...run hard and throw deep and hope for a penalty...which had a few almost 300 yds in flags...Bridgewater is not even close to Jacory in talent..chandler is big but was handled all night by Central...the kid 31 from central was the best player on the field....nice to see the NW guys from the U there..those kids dont know how big that is for both teams....Forston did not look to hurt last night...GO CANES..63-0 on FAMU...take care of them quickly and punish them...all school cane style...

Michaelee Harris is a stud.

FAMU's QB, transfer from UK, is from my hometown..They SERIOUSLY think they can beat the Canes

Miami Football ? North Western and Central huh ?

undisciplined, unorganized, bumbling coached teams . That's what yall have down there ?

can a punter get a snap ?

Yes, we might be, but you could not touch our speed. We would blow right by you. Just throw it up and we would catch it and score. Mississippi...yeah right.

nealtrom,

"Chandler is big but was handled all night by Central"

U act like a closet Gayturd fan? Do you know FB? Chandler was double teamed all night, and he also had the RB's keying on him. Every team that plays NW tries to stop Chandler w/ 2 or 3 players.

FB 101, if you take up 2 or 3 blockers that free's up others. That's a gooddddddd thing!

Not only will they young men who go to miami have that comraderie-- since they wont all play nfl-- they will have a good education from a top academic university-- to take with them.

they are not just a bunch of atheletes-- they are future businessmen and workforce. theres alot to be said for not 'using' then-- for rewarding them with a good education. Good for UM-- great for the players

Last nights game was a sloppy mess only because most of these kids were anxious. 8 out of 10 times this game is played they way it is suppose to be played. And to that guy from Miss., even with all the penalties on offense both these teams form Dade whoop up on teams from Miss. when was the last time any team from Miss. was in the national spotlight and played well against another top team ...yea exactly

Manny,

Do you have anything related to the story that was posted on Rivals about the schedule next year? There is no way Miami can open w/ FSU or VT on Labor Day night again and then be expected to win AT Ohio State 4 days later. It will not happen!! I do not care how good you are, you cannot schedule like that and beat those kinds of teams back to back on short rest. That is aboslutely obsurd and Hocutt should be fired on the spot if he allows that to happen!

In a year when UM will most certainly be challanging for a national title, they cannot possibly think that scheduling that way is acceptable when Miami needs a schedule that is friendly to win a title. I know their hands are tied being the #3 team on the pecking order at LS Stadium but there is a way to make it work and Hocutt needs to do his job and find it! But scheduling FSU or VT and Ohio State within 6 days of each other is suicide!!!

coach p??

dbl team...?? are you kidding me..forston who has yet to break out at miami ( he will) used to blow thru dbl teams..as did sapp, brown, wilfork etc..this is highschool...what i saw was the JOSE JOSE on him at times kepping him in check..other times non D-1 prosepcts keeping him in check...I look forward to him coming to the U and getting better coached and learing the game...forston is in the same boat...great size but no game skills at this level...season tickeyt holder since 81...at the U...GO CANES....you guys let emotion get in the way of facts..

Just throw it up and we would catch it and score. Mississippi...yeah right.

that disply last night was a joke.

get your facts straight Florida

POP Warner?? LMAO...What happend to southlake 2 years ago when "THE WEST" went TO TEXAS AND BEAT THE dog Sh%^ outta them!!! How many players has mississippi put into the league?? DONT WORRY, I'll WAIT! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA...

U sound envious n STUPID! lol...U WANT NO PART OF MIAMI BALL...BOY! (And i mean that boy in a VERY DEROGATORY WAY!) LMAO...

The word is that Teddy is an even higher rated prospect than Jacory coming out and last night I saw why. He is so fluid and does the one thing that most mobile Quarterback's don't even do AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL.

He uses his feet and mobility to open up plays down the field. Most guys that are mobile, even on the College level, once they feel pressure just tuck it and run. Teddy on multiple occasions last night broke the pocket and made moves with the intention of making a play down field. If he wants to be an NFL QB, Mark Whipple can make it happen.

nealtrom,

You didn't watch the game. Jose Jose is the right tackle and he NEVER block against Chandler. Not once, Chandler was at right tackle all night.

And even though he was doubled and tripled teamed all night he still had 4 solo tackles.

Let emotions get in the way?? I do this for a living not from a couch!

Just getting started in Mississippi . the entire nation saw what miami had to offer last night. and it wasn't good.

State of Mississippi Number 1 In Prep Football

The study ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on five different criteria: percentage of professional football fans (Mississippi ranked 21st), percentage of college football fans (15th), percentage of varsity high school football players divided by the state's male population 15-17 (3rd), percentage of signed NCAA Division I recruits for 2006 divided by the number of 11-man varsity high school football players in that state (7th), and the percentage of NFL players in 2005 divided by the number of 11-man varsity high school players in the state (8th). The states ranking in the top 10 included (in order of finish) Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, Ohio, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, South Carolina, Kansas and Florida.

A number of former and current NFL super stars hail for the Magnolia State:

Walter Payton (Columbia) -- Named to Pro Football Hall of Fame
Jerry Rice (Crawford) -- NFL's all-time leading receiver
Lance Alworth (Brookhaven) -- Member of both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame
Archie Manning (Drew) -- One of the greatest QBs in New Orleans Saints history
*Brett Favre (Kiln) -- NFL's only three-time MVP (1995-97)
L.C. Greenwood (Canton) -- Owns four Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers
*Steve McNair (Mount Olive) -- NFL co-MVP in 2003
Jackie Slater (Jackson) -- Set NFL record for linemen by playing in 259 consecutive games
Hugh Green (Natchez) -- Two-time Pro Bowler with Bucs and Dolphins
*Eric Moulds (Lucedale) -- Three-time Pro Bowler currently with Texans
*Deuce McAllister (Lena) -- New Orleans Saints all-time leading rusher

* -- denotes current player

were those block parties going on around the teams on the sidelines ?

Texas ?

There was a lot of speed , size , and raw talent on the field in the game, not much polished talent. JH was way ahead of Bridgewater in touch, good decisions, and mechanics. Bridgewater is a project but with good upside.

I believe one of Whipple's kid's attends St. Thomas, AND plays on the football team! Yeah you're right, no connection there "D" Bag!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Don't tell Meyer, he might get vewry angwey! Ha Ha

This "thing" has legs now boy, and it's going to run right over U! And we can do it for half the price!!! UF looks sooooooooo STUPID right now!

RANDY AND CO. ARE THE TRUTH!!!

Go 'canes!

IF YOU AIN'T A GATOR, THAN YOU'RE JUST...someone who stayed out of trouble, received a good education, and will probaly lead a rich and rewarding life!

I love the fact that this nut is all of a sudden a State of Mississippi fan! This "D" Bag will jump on ANY bandwagon to come on here and talk smack! What a TOOL!

He's all your's UF...and FSU...and USF...and FIU...and OU...and OSU...and...

Go 'canes!

LOL. Mississipi? LOL. I can't stop. I think I just sharted because I laughed so hard.

That "formula" by the way doesn't take into account the states' relative population. But regardless, Hmmmm. Let's see.

Mythical but real HS NCs- Last 5 years?

Miami NW, St Thomas, Lakeland, I mean... I don't see anything here about Mississipi. When did Ole Miss, MSU, Southern Miss, etc last win a NC?

UF, FSU, and UM have won 5 of the last 13 NCs, 9 of the last 25. Not to mention the others that they played for.YOU do the math.

How about Miami NW against Texas Southlake? How about St THomas against Byrnes? How about Lakeland against That Ohio Team (this year), I mean come on. Pleeeeeasssse!

I can see if you all said Texas hs football is better. From the sheer size of the satte, I can see that. But Mississipi? PLease stop! Someone make him stop!

Hey mattinny, I did the research and found that the U plays Florida A&M om 9/4 and then Ohio State on 9/11. You can get the schedule for all NCAA teams as far ahead as 2012. Thos that already have scheduled dates are posted. The web site is http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-09/acc/2009-miami-hurricanes-football-schedule.php

The U on the west coast

Thanks for the link pablo.

Wonder what rivals is talking about? There must be another tough game scheduled before the Ohio ST. game?

There is a rumor going around that were trying to schedule an SEC team. I would love to see that.

MattInNY - I would welcome the tough schedule, this will only make the U better and you can afford a lose.

Do you have anything related to the story that was posted on Rivals about the schedule next year? There is no way Miami can open w/ FSU or VT on Labor Day night again and then be expected to win AT Ohio State 4 days later (5 days later -- green).

Posted by: pablo | October 09, 2009 at 11:21 AM

Thats what the schedule says now but its all tentative. The Marlins are at home the FAMU weekend date so that game is going to have to be moved b/c UM gets 3rd priority to scheduling behind the Dolphins and Marlins.

From insidetheU :

Completely Happy at Miami

Because Streeter hasn’t played and there is a logjam at receiver for playing time coupled with Streeter’s decision to pick Miami on Signing Day as opposed to committing early like the rest of his Northwestern teammates, rumors have began to circulate that he is unhappy at Miami and looking to transfer.

Sitting down and talking with him, you would have a hard time believing those rumors are true.

“I am completely happy here,” Streeter said. “It was so funny because throughout the recruiting process everybody thought I wasn’t coming here, but there was no doubt in my mind that I was coming here. It was just a little recruiting game. I always felt I was coming here. I was a UM fan ever since I was little.”

When asked if he’s enjoying himself at Miami, he can’t help but to smile and explain how much fun he is having. And even though things on the field have not matriculated the way he had envisioned coming in, he’s thoroughly enjoying being at UM.

“I have no complaints with the University of Miami,” Streeter said. “I love everything from the academics to football with the coaching staff and everything. It’s like a family here.”

So what has made his experience so enjoyable thus far?

“Just the fact that I have met so many people from diverse races and backgrounds,” Streeter said. “Coming from the inner city, you don’t come in contact with that many people. I’ve liked networking and speaking with people and developing relationships I feel is a really good thing. Just learning in the classroom which is preparing me for the goals and aspirations with what I what do with life and with broadcasting.”

Broadcasting? Yes, broadcasting. Streeter has been excited about studying broadcasting ever since we began talking to him throughout the recruiting process. He’s been busy taking introductory classes in the field such as Media Management and Communications 101.

“I can’t wait to go to editing and filming. That’s what I really like,” he said.

Neal...what are you talking about? stop reading the gator blogs....the only arrests are made in Gainesville nowadays.

thats a big time schedule for next year no matter how the scheduling goes down...
love the big game approach to scheduling...
everyone kid across the country is seeing my is
