FAMU postgame notes, thoughts

About to headout of Land Shark Stadium, but here are a few notes and thoughts from UM's 48-16 win over Florida A&M.

> Great debut for junior Damien Berry -- even if it wast against a tired FAMU defense in the second half. Berry's 162 yards on 14 carries were the most for a UM running back since Tyrone Moss ran for 195 yards against North Carolina in 2005 at the Orange Bowl.

I know what you're thinking... Why did Berry have to wait until tonight to get his first carry? Here's my theory: he might not be enough of an alpha male. All he kept talking about after his performance was how great the offensive line played. When asked if he's frustrated by the fact he's the scout team running back, he said "I'll play wherever my coaches put." Come on Damien, be a little more like Keyshawn! Tell them you want the dang ball! In all seriousness, Berry has a lot of studs in front of him. If he were good enough, he'd be playing against someone other than FAMU.

> UM coach Randy Shannon said earlier this week he wanted freshman AJ Highsmith to get some "meaningful playing time." Guess three pass attempts for 36 yards was meaningful. To Highsmith's credit, he did make a nice pass to a wide open Tommy Streeter for a 29-yard gain. And he said he wasn't nervous. I just wonder if and when we'll see him again.

> The real concern coming out of this game will be the health of the right shoulder of receiver Aldarius Johnson. He stood on the sidelines in the second quarter with his pads off with his arm in a sling. Richard Gordon hurt his shoulder against FSU and hasn't been back since.

> Receiver Tommy Streeter says he isn't going anywhere. For all of you reading rumors on message boards this is what Mr. Streeter told me tonight about it: "I'm 100 percent a Cane, 110 percent. I'm dedicated to this program and I'm not going anywhere. I'm just staying humble and waiting for my opportunity, my name to be called. I'm just trying to work hard, show coaches I can make plays and that they can trust in me."

Berry HAS TO PLAY. He's the ONLY back on the roster with both speed and power (exception Lamar Miller but he's RS). Berry attacks the hole, is physical, runs north/south w/ quick cuts, and reaches top speed immediately. He should have played against VT when Coop/James did nothing as Coop couldn't break tackles and James couldn't go by VT defenders. Last night, while Berry ran 14 times for 162 yds; the other RBs ran 22 times for 62. They all rand against the same FAMU D, yet ONLY Berry could move the ball AT ALL on the ground. He did it in spring too - he's legit and the coaches need to wake up and play this kid NOW.

I agree with canezVa.

Berry should be put in the rotation at rb esp if coop is not 100%. I say if Coop doesnt run for 1000 yds this season, he should stay one more year. Otherwise, he's going to get 5th round $, and linger on the bench somewhere. Get bigger, get more reps at blocking better, get more exposure, and you'll command a bigger check in 2 yrs.

Um 9 in the AP poll, 11 in the USA today, 12th in the Harris poll. For the life of me, the voters are just brainldead. I mean how do you rationalize having BYU over GT? Or Ohio State and USC nearly identical? Pleeeeease!

Style points count people (attention coach shannon). That's why Alabama jumped Texas to no.2, and why TCU dropped. UM should have plastered 60 on FAMY, but Coach is to politically correct. he's got the Shalala bug- hey, it works everywhere else, why not? Everyone hates UM anyway, so what's going to change?

However, L. Miller is the real deal. If he continues to work & gets bigger & stronger, he should be #1 back next yr.

Are you kidding me, Mike James is clearly going to be the #1 guy next year, experience does count to Shannon that's why Berry doesn't play much now inexperienced. Berry will be the backup, followed by Clements and then Lamar Miller. I really think Chambers will transfer at the end of the season. (We always hae transfers)

BTW, Ryan Williams of VT had a great Spring game (like Berry was offensive MVP) but unlike Berry he moved to #2 behind Darren Evans 9who then went down). Berry (very similar size/speed/strength as RW) stayed right at #4 behind RBs that have come nowhere near 1,000 yd. seasons. I like Cooper's open field ability and James has heart and versatility but James is an average talent and Coop's an all-purpose-back. Berry looks like the only stud RB on the squad. I hope he keeps getting touches - people will say "where did this guy come from"... Just like they're saying about Miami now...

Lamar Miller aint playing or not significantly. Poor decision. I thought the Canes played all young players? BAHWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA
Have fun being a backup to the scout team back.

ok lets not get carried away with berry. WE PLAYED FAMU. of course he's gonna look good.

and also canezVA ryan williams is a million time better than berry. no comparison. i saw this coming when he was in high school. i wanted UM to go after him then and now he's torching everyone.

Manny when are we going to get the audio interviews?

How UM is ranked #2 by next Sunday

We're #9 right now. Here's how we get to #2 a week from now, by looking at next Saturday's schedule:

#8 Cincinnati at # 21 USF

Cincinnati loses, making USF a higher ranked opponent when we beat them at the end of the season. Canes move up to #8 spot.

#20 Oklahoma vs #3 Texas

OK beats TX, making our win against OK count for more and clearing the way for us to slide into the #7 spot.

#6 USC at #25 Notre Dame

If the Irish pull the home upset, USC is out of the NC conversation and we rise to the #6 spot.

#4 VT at #19 Georgia Tech

This is the big one. VT with two losses will slip past us in the polls and get us into the top five.

#22 South Carolina at #2 Alabama.

It's a long shot, especially on the road. But Bama has offense problems. Their win last night was powered almost exclusively by field goals. SC forces a few mistakes and the Canes are ranked #4. Ahead of them: Boise State, Ohio State, and Florida.

We would likely jump Boise State in the polls even with one loss (that's where VT sits right now), so that puts us at #3. When choosing between a one-loss Ohio State team and a one-loss UM team, many voters will slot us ahead of Ohio State given our strength of schedule.

That puts us at #2. Assuming Florida can win out (a big assumption, especially with that SEC title game) and UM can win out, that's one exciting NC game.

You remember last year when Shannon said he was going to take over Red Zone offense because Miami was WORST in the entire nation. Well he did, he actually got improvement. This year they are actually ranked #100 in red zone offense out of 120 teams. Amazing what great coaching can do!

There was even a Miami Herald article stating how Shannon was taking over coaching red zone offense.

LOL what a joke. I think that deserves an immediate 5 year extension. Please get this done!

How could Alabama turn everything around in a year but it takes the canes 4-5 years??? Can someone answer me that. I am taking down my flag. How could we throw 2 picks against FAMU? Famu is horrible. USF is going to blow us right out of the water if we dont start protecting the football.

ooster, I didn't say Damien Berry was better than Ryan Williams but then again, how would you really know? Jimmy Graham looks like an all-ACC TE and hasn't played since HS. If we were stocked at TE he'd never have been given the chance and NOBODY would know he's any goood. Berry gained yards last night when 4 other Cane RB went absolutely nowhere. At one time Barry Sanders was the #4 RB at Okla St. - then he shattered every NCAA record. not saying Berry is the next All-America or even All ACC. I'm saying that bottom line, Berry has speed/strength and Coop/James have one or the other. He's a missing ingredient on this team. I thought so at spring and still do. If he gets touches, people will eventually agree...

Sarasota cane,

Where you been dude...First of all Alabama didn't have a bare cupboard like we did so we had to play catch up first.. Add that we had a young team to start off too. You are comparing apples and oranges dude.. Another thing You forget Harris is still young this is his six start of his young career. I know you want perfection but come on man you are a little to hard on them. By the way take down your flag cause MIAMI don't need HALF HEARTED FANS LIKE U. ROOT FOR FSU IF THAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery "fake" Sarasota 'cane! Thanks!

I love it when you answer your own posts as a disgruntled canes fan! Classic!

Hey "D" Bag, BOO!! Your fake nose and glasses is not really a disguise, even if you use the optional mustache attachment! Ha Ha Ha

You look sooooo stupid and petty!

Go 'canes!

We shud be able to win easily Sat., but not if we play like we did against FAMU. We played very flat. UCF has a huge crowd thats going to be very loud and UCF is going to be fired up. Could be a trap game if we come flat. Gotta win big if we want to move up.

Why not ?? RUN A TWO BACK OFFENSE for A COUPLE GAMES.
1st TEAM: J James & COOPER

2nd TEAM: d. BERRY & CHAMBERS.

ALSO why not run a NO BACK offense (for a change up) and 5X WIDE RECEIVERS !!!!!!

THIS offense would be "UNSTOP---ABLE" !!!!

Also :: YOu got to LOVE TOMMY STREETER !! HE and SHields (#9) are TRUE MEN and CANES and
not a CRY BABY like Marve etc. !!

Yeah can't wait for Manny to tell everyone on the blog what recruits where at the FAMU game.

How exciting is Ray Ray Armstrong. This kid is already a beast and he's going to get bigger. Some of the hits he's had this season are already legendary. I have not been this exicited about a freshman for a long time. The sky is the limit for this kid. He just needs to keep his emotions in check and not make freshman penalties. I guess you can't get too upset for agressive penalties though. Once he gets to the "been there, done that phase" of college football we won't see those penalties anymore, but the upside is incredible. Keep up the good work Canes and take one game at a time.

CanesFanStuckInCali

Thanks for the video! It's Monday morning and I'm pumped up to watch some Canes football.

I think I'll go slam some more coffee!

Miami Hurricane highlights vs Florida A&M

Lol we only rank 100 in the red zone because most of out touchdowns come from outside the 20 lol good info Chaz

Hey guys,

I don't post here often, but I wanted to congratulate Coach Shannon and the CANEs to a great start of the season. I know that most of you will be either watching or going to UCF next weekend. ***I would like to ask CANE fans who graduated from FIU for their help this weekend.

We have a crucial home conference game against Troy the defending champs. We need to provide our guys with a real home field advantage against a well disciplined Trojan team. I know that many of you bleed orange and green through thick and thin. But I'm asking for your support this weekend and helping your alma mater by coming to the tailgate and game. If you have not been to a game yet and graduated years ago before football was ever a reality....Give it a chance, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Tickets start at $15 and there is not a bad seat in the house. It's also our BLACKOUT game !! Wear black or get an official gameday shirt by addidas at the stadium. Tailgating starts at 2pm, kickoff at 7pm

The coaching staff and players are working hard to make all of it's graduates proud to be Panthers. We are loaded with South Florida kids and they would love your support. We hope to see some of you at the game !!

Again, congrats to UM on a great start this year and good luck vs. UCF !!!

Panthers on the RISE !!!

Btw did ur mom not like you...I mean come on Chaz did she just throw a couple letters together and say that's his name

CanesFanStuckInCali,

Thanks I've been searching EVERYWHERE for that video. Goosebumps man!

I was at the Spring game and saw Berry in person tear up the Canes defense exactly the way he tore up FAMU. I know a great player when I see one. The dude hits the hole harder than any other RB we got and he runs angry with bad intentions. At the very least he should be number 3 on the chart. He has earned a chance to get a longer look. What a great stock of RBs we have.

Ed Reed is still a premier pro bowl ball hawk.

Ray Ray Lewis laid some nasty wood on 8-5, that caused them the game (most likely)

Andre Johnson is a beast

Major Cane injuries in the NFL: Kenny Phillips, Frank Gore.

Ej is running better. Would love to see him inthe top 9 all time.

The call against Brandon Meriwhether yesterday (for taunting) was ssoooooooo lame!. Replay shows that the flag came out BEFORE he actually started taunting. And all he did was swing his fist in the air anyway. Zebras are so pathetic- you all make me sick. hs, college and pros. The calls at my kids hs game on friday were so lame. I mean, its getting bad people.

Exactly, Damien Berry owned our own D in the Spring picked up where he left off as soon as he got touches on Sat night. The other RBs were being stuffed for losses/short gains. BTW, Berry missed a portion of his Sr. year and played most of it with a hurt knee and was still a 1,000 yd. rusher in HS. We have a hidden gem and I hope the coaches us it...

FSU will have to wait until 2015, they suc!

Any updates on our injuries? We need to get healthy soon. UCF is going to be hyped to play us.It will be their Superbowl

COOPER
EPPS
DYE
GORDON
FORSTON
JO JO
Randy P.
VERNON
WESLEY

Also Pat Hill

sammynole- forget 2015- FSU is done forever- all their potential recruits are coming here, to USF or sorry to say, the turds.
that's kinda sad, I used to like when UM whooped your sorry---sses and loved watching Bobby blow his nose with his hanky and squirm on the sidelines. That too is o-vah!

If it doesnthappenb this year, UM's next goal is the NC. that will happen within 2 years, mark my words- so get your sorry behind off this blog. Like your siemen-holes, U R done.

U can come back though if FSU beats the gators on some miracle.

Fukc yea....let the flood gates open

Please stop with the "Alpha Male" comments. I'm so tired of sall the macho posturing going on in footbsall. Berry plsyed grest & deserves more touches. I think it's cool that he's a team guy.

I'm old school. Don't like mascots, fan shots or the other b.s. that goes with TV, especially guys on the DL acting like jerks when they make a good play. Sacking the QB is what the DL is supposed to do. (This comment isn't directed at the Canes - they all do it & I hate it.)

The Canes will go as far as the defense takes them. Go Canes!

toddthecane

Although the injuries are disturbing to hear, I think they may be some kind of blessing in disguise. If the top notch recruits pay attention to some of these injuries, they may see a window of opportunity to step in and play right away (given they put in the effort in practice ala Ray Ray). Here's to Coach Shannon and co. closing the deal on some of these recruits over the next few weeks and getting to a BCS bowl this year and a shot a an NC next year.

GO CANES!!

How about all of those empty seats! Da 'U' sucks! Go Clemson, beat the Thugs!

The season's over!!!! John Lovett didn't blitz once. That 3rd down was an obvious blitz situation. Our coverage is terrible!!! John Lovett must go!!!!! Worst defensive coordinator I have ever seen!!!!
