Game blog: Clemson 40, Miami 37- final

Hi everybody. Justin Azpiazu here at Land Shark Stadium filling in for devoted Hurricanes blogger Manny Navarro, who is at a wedding.

We are a little less than an hour away from game time and both teams are going through their pregame routines on the field.

No. 8 Miami is going to have their hands full against a talented Clemson team that has lost several close games this season. The Canes offense is matching up with one of the fastest defenses in the nation and will have to lock down the offensive line if they want to beat the Tigers.  On the offensive side Clemson has a couple of speedy wide receivers that challenged Georgia Tech's defense to start the season. Wide out Jacoby Ford and running back C.J. Spiller are two-world class sprinters that the Canes' defense needs to keep an eye on.

After a rainy start to the afternoon the sun has come out at Land Shark Stadium, which should help the Hurricanes' offense.

Feel free to post any questions and I'll try to answer them quickly.

Sorry everyone no Cover It Live for today's game.

Weather for the game: 83 degrees under cloudy skies.

Clemson will receive.

FIRST QUARTER

First drive of the game Clemson starts on their 25-yard line.

Clemson connects on a long pass play to move the ball to the Miami 43.

Canes' big third down. UM gives up 15-yard pass over the middle for another Clemson first down.

Canes' defense has so far shutdown the Clemson rushing attack but has struggled through the air.

Clemson ball on the Miami 24.

Miami hold on third down to force a 41-yard field goal.

Clemson kicker misses.

11:03 - Miami gets the ball on their 24-yard line.

Cooper breaks 8-yard run and Berry gains 7 yards.

Wow, on a play action Harris and Hankerson connect on a 20 yard pass. Hankerson made a great one handed grab of the ball.

Hankerson makes another nice catch, this one for 14 yards to move the ball to the Miami 20-yard line.

On first down Harris looks at Hankerson again who tips the ball into the waiting hands of a Clemson DB.

Clemson ball on their own 30.

Miami's defense needs to buckle down and get more pressure on Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker.

Canes get a break on an intentional grounding penalty that pushes the ball back to the Clemson 33-yard line. Time out Clemson with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Another big penalty on Clemson makes it 3 and 25.Clemson's offense has imploded since the intentional grounding penalty. In the last two plays Clemson has gotten two clipping penalties to make it 3 and 49.

Tigers 47-yard punt.

Miami ball on their 35.

First play of the drive Harris connects with Collier for a 20-yard pass.

Two straight rushes makes it 3 and 2 from the Clemson 37.

Harris and Cooper connect for a  3-yard pass for another first down.

Miami is 3-3 on third down conversions.Holding on Miami makes it 1 and 20 from the 40.

End of first quarter Miami 0, Clemson 0.

SECOND QUARTER

Miami gets on the board first with a 49-yard field goal by Matt Bosher.

Scoring drive: 8 plays, 33 yards. Time 4:21.

Miami kickoff Clemson gets the ball on their own 38.

Miami continues to stop the run but gives up another first down on a pass.

Hold your breath everyone Sean Spence is down but slowly walks off the field.

Spence is having is left knee checked out on the sideline, no word on what happened.

Ramon Buchanan takes over for Spence. Big turnover for Miami Collin McCarthy forces a fumble Andrew Smith recovers. On the first play of the drive Miami breaks a long play but is brought back on a penalty.

Spence still being worked on. He's surrounded by three trainers. Good news Canes fans Spence is off the trainers table and is running on the sideline. Trainers put an elastic sleave over his left knee and it looks like he will be able to return to the game.

After the penalty Miami's drive has stalled forcing 4 and 13 from the Miami 25. On third down Harris tries for a long pass down the sideline that fell incomplete.
Fourth down Miami back to punt. Bosher kicks a 47-yard punt.

Spence update: he's still on the sideline warming up on the exercise bike and not in on Miami's first defensive play of the drive. Canes continue to get burned by the pass giving up another first down.

3 and 3 for Clemson from the 40.Clemson converts another pass for first down. Miami is going to have to make some adjustments at halftime to stop the Tigers' passing attack.
No word on if or when Spence is going to return. He's standing on the sideline with no helmet near by.

Spence is back on the trainers table with a bag of ice on his knee.

The pass continues to kill Miami. Canes give up 18-yard touchdown to Michael Palmer make it 7-3 Clemson.

Clemson scoring drive 11 plays, 72 yards, time 4:12.

Miami's passing defense has looked horrible in the first half.

Clemson kickoff Miami gets the ball on their 20.

Harris connects with Collier for 10 yards and another Hurricanes first down. Harris finds Jimmy Graham for 8 yards. 2 and 2 for Miami on their 49-yard line.

Harris gets pressured and fumbles but Cooper recovers loss of 6. Harris comes back and finds Hankerson for 26-yard gain. Clemson takes their third and final timeout.

Miami has the ball on the Clemson 31.On first down Berry gets 7 on a run up the middle. Second down Berry breaks it 23 yards for a touchdown. Mike James had a huge block on the run. Miami 10, Clemson 7.

Scoring drive 10 plays, 80 yards time 4:24.

On the kickoff Clemson running back C.J. Spiller takes it 90 yards for a touchdown. The speedy Spiller is one of the top track and field runners in the country and he really showed his speed on that return. Great blocking by Clemson's special teams.

Clemson 14, Miami 10.

Miami gets the ball on their 39-yard line. On first down Cooper gets 8 yards on a run to the outside. After the timeout Cooper breaks a 25-yard run to move the ball to the Clemson 32-yard line.

Miami takes its third and final timeout of the half.

With :20 seconds left in the second quarter Miami gets called for two many men on the field pushing the ball back to the 37. On 1 and 15 Harris throws a long pass to Jimmy Graham who can't find the ball.

On 2 and 15 Harris is pressured and throws up a terrible pass to three Clemson DBs.

Halftime.

First half summary

The Canes' offense has looked good so far, but two picks by Harris and bad clock management to end the second quarter have really hurt.

Clemson has torched Miami's passing defense for a 129 yards and a touchdown. Tigers' qb Kyle Parker is 10 for 15. The Hurricanes have limited Clemson's running game holding Spiller to 28 yards.

Even though the Canes are down look for Miami to turn things around in the second half. This season the Canes have rocketed out the gate in the third quarter.

If Miami wants to win today's contest they will need to put pressure on  qb Parker and make him throw some picks. The Canes haven't come close to sacking Parker and he's had all the time in the world to find open receivers. Canes' special team's is going to have to lock down on Spiller and stop him from taking the game over. Spiller has already scored on one long return and has 110 yards on two tries.

THIRD QUARTER

On the first play of the third quarter Harris connects with Hankerson for a 22-yard catch. 1 and 10 Cooper runs for 3 yards.

On 1 and 10 Harris throws to LaRon Byrd who draws a defensive pass interference penalty to move the ball to the Clemson 29. On first down Berry runs for 8 yards up the middle. On second down Berry gets a yard. Miami Calls timeout and is facing a 3 and 2 from the Clemson 21.

On 3 and 2 Harris finds Epps for a 16-catch to move the ball to the Clemson 5-yard line. 1 and 5 Berry takes it 4 yards to 1-yard line. Berry has picked up the slack for Javarris James whose only had one carry in the game.

On second down Berry scores but the play is called back after an illegal formation penalty on Miami.

On 3 and 3 Harris connects with Hankerson for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Hankerson was meet at the goal-line by a Clemson defender but pushed his way in for the score. Miami 17, Clemson 14

Scoring drive: 9 plays 80 yards, time 4:08.

After a kickoff by Bosher Clemson takes over on their 30. 1 and 10 Spiller rushes for 3 yards.

Spence update

He's back!!! and makes the tackle on his first play.

2 and 7 Parker connects with Spiller for 5 yards. 3 and 3 from the Clemson 40 - Darryl Sharpton blows up Spiller for a 3-yard loss. Clemson punt.

Miami takes over on their 17-yard line.

1 and 10 for the Canes - Cooper rushes for 5 yards. On 2 and 5 Harris throws incomplete. Canes need to continue putting the pressure on the Clemson defense. On third down Harris gets sacked by Clemson's Brandon May. Bosher back to punt. Spiller back to return.

Clemson takes over on their 27-yard line.

This game has turned into a shoot out. With Clemson scoring on a long touchdown pass from Parker to Spiller for 56 yards. Spiller is killing the Hurricanes. He's got two scores so far and a ton of yards.

Clemson 21, Miami 14

Scoring drive 3 plays 73 yards time 1:21.

Today's attendance 43,778.

Miami gets the ball back after the kickoff rolls into the endzone. On first down Collier fumbles the ball after getting hit and its recovered by Clemson in Miami's redzone.

On first down Parker throws for two yards. On second down Parker has heavy pressure and fumbles. Marcus Robinson picks up the fumble and runs 54 yards for a huge Miami touchdown.

Miami 24, Clemson 21.

After a Bosher kick, Clemson takes over at their own 32 yard line. Clemson passing game picks up another first down.

Parker is picking apart the Miami defense and so far this drive the Canes have given up two first down for 11 yards each.

1 and 10 for the Miami 47 - McCarthy tackles Ellington for a 2-yard loss. 2 and 13 Parker connects with Ellington for a 10-yard gain.

Spence watch

Spence is hurt again and is on the sideline with no helmet. Spence has been limping for much of the game after hurting his left knee in the first quarter.

Clemson is having no trouble moving the ball on Miami. On first down Parker over throws a wide open Ellington for what would have been a touchdown. The Canes completely missed Ellington and he was never covered during the play. The Hurricanes got a huge break but unless the defense can tighten up this game is going to be close.

Miami's defense finally gets a stop on third down after Brandon Harris breaks up a pass. Clemson ties the game on a 43-yard field goal.

Scoring drive: 10 plays, 48 yards time 3:59.

Tie ball game folks. Both teams have fought hard and it feels like this ones going to come down to who has the ball last.

Miami gets the ball back after the kickoff.

On first down Benjamine losses 14 yards on a pitch.

FOURTH QUARTER

Jacory continues to be great on third down connecting with Byrd for a first down. On first down Javarris James breaks a long run for 45 yards to move the ball to the Clemson 25-yard line. The carry was James second run of the game.

Miami burns third timeout with 12:28 in the fourth quarter.

3 and 10 for Miami and Jacory goes down on a blindside sack. Clemson has three sacks on J12 in the game. Bosher out for 51-yard kick and he nailed it. Shows why a couple of years ago he was named team MVP.

Miami 27, Clemson 24

On the kickoff Spiller is stopped by Miami's special teams.

On first down Parker connects with TE Michael Palmer who got destroyed by Darryl Sharpton. Palmer fumbled but the ball was ruled down. Palmer's helmet fell off and he was knocked out cold.

Canes force punt and get the ball back at their 15-yard line.

On first down Jacory throws a pick to DeAndre McDaniel who returns it for  a 23-yard touchdown.

McDaniel, who has two picks today, leads the nation with seven picks.

Miami is having a tough time in this game and it seems that every time they get a break they mess it up. Miami need to score on this drive if the want to stay in the game.

Clemson 31, Miami 27

Miami gets the ball back after a nice return by Cooper. On first down Harris connects with Benjamin for a 69-yard touchdown pass. Jacory makes up for his pick.

Miami 34, Clemson 31

Clemson continues to move the ball at will against Miami. The Canes have no answer and have been on the ropes for much of the game. After giving up another long run to Spiller the Canes are faced with a 3 and 1 from their 6-yard line.

Clemson converts on third down and have 1 and goal from the 5.

INTERCEPTION MIAMI!!!

Randy Phillips takes the ball in the endzone. Miami's defense comes up huge. Miami starts at their 20-yard line. Three straight rushes and the Canes have to punt the ball back.

I don't understand how Miami could run the ball on third down.

Clemson gets the ball back at their 40-yard line. Miami is going to have to buckle down and stop Clemson again if they want to win the game.

Clemson continues to pound Miami on the ground gaining another first down. Parker takes a draw up the middle by is meet by DT Joe Joseph. Clemson's called that same run twice and both have been ugly.

3 and 6 for Clemson - Canes give up a short pass over the middle to Spiller who comes up short of the first down. Clemson rushes for it on fourth down and gets two yards for a first down.

This one is going to come down to wire. Miami's defense is either going to win it or lose it.

On 1 and 10 Miami allows a 13-yard run to move the ball to their 10-yard line.

Clemson ties the game 34-34 on a 30 -yard field goal.

OVERTIME

Miami starts on offense and on the first play Cooper gains 19 yards on a run to the outside. Canes have the ball on the Clemson 6-yard line. James gains 3 yards on first down.

On third down Harris scrambled in the pocket but had to throw the ball away.

Bosher out for field goal and nails it. Miami takes 37-34 lead.

Clemson takes over on the 30-yard line and Parker has to throw it away after being pressured. On second down

3 and 11 for Clemson connects on a 26-yard touchdown pass. Game over 40-37.

tough loss for the Canes. See ya later everyone.

Wish in one hand and $hit in the other. Find another program to cheer for you pansy. RS is the head coach here and will be long after you jump on another band wagon.

Take the gun out of your mouth Cane fan,

Stop posting under different names. Sarasota is a fool. 3 years and 5 coordinators later, Miami is still a poorly coached team. The defense is still terrible and has no depth. How many missed tackles today? Special teams are still awful. Where is the coaching? While Meyer and Saban built top 10 defenses in under 3 years, the greatest DC ever still has a D in shambles. Make excuses all you want about injuries and inexperince but then go look in the top 10. Wait Brian Kelly or Pete Carroll rebuilt D's while losing 10 starters. The program is still a disappointment. The good news is that next year we can still probaly finish in 3rd.

Its funny how someone calls a real season ticket holder a gator fan. Maybe that person should continue to blog instead of going to games. Shannon is an embarrassment. 3 years later and the defensive whiz has done nothing. Love his stances. Miami really didnt need Patrick Peterson. Miami is apperantly loaded at CB.

Posted by: Cav | October 24, 2009 at 11:15 PM

Yeah because so many people know who Patrick Peterson is these day's. Yeah the kid is balling out.... last I heard he wanted to transfer out of LSU.

Yeah you are right we would be better off starting all over again that's the way to be consistent. Stop whinning already and head on over to gator clause where you can stand in a circle and glad handle Gibby and Tebow.

Im sure he wants to transfer to the U. Shannon is a master. Maybe you should take your own advice or maybe come up with a different name like the other 10 you post under.

You are soo right. Shannon is mister consistent. Exactly how many coordinators has Miami had? Lets stop firing coordinators and just get to the root of the problem. Anybody think Whipple is going to put up working for a moron? He is more qualified and should be the HC.

we lost this game because of one reason: coaching.

enough said.

Let's see if the team can rebound and finish 10-2 and a good bowl game. Let's not forget, one more loss by both GT & VT and it is a tie again. Anything is still possible, but we did blow it today.

I am still not over the shock of the game. I really felt we had a coaching advantage in our games. But what I saw today wasn't that. Both the offensive and defensive coordinators failed the team. You SPIKE the ball after the big run at the end of the first hal, no question that you SAVE your last timeout. Your next play is not then a Jimmy Graham hopefully you can find an end zone pass, but instead a throw 10 yards down the field and he barralls over the coverage. Inexcusable at end of first half.

As a defensive coordinator, you must take the same chances that the offense takes. I am not asking for an all out blitz, but at least ONE guy has to rush the passer from either the linebackers or the secondary. Hell, Spiller wasn't even in the game for half of the plays in the fourth quarter. On third and more than 10 yards, in OT, you blitz just to get the ball out of the QBs hands. Make him throw something early and more often than not, that blitz read by the O is not a first down.

The U has talented played, on offense and defense, but it means nothing if the coaches don't believe in the players. Total coaching loss.

10 thoughts for tonite....

1. If I have to choose between Whipple and Shannon to remain on the staff, I choose Whipple.

2. Arthur Brown's bust status cost us a game. Spence has to hobble out on the field because Brown can't learn the defense.

3. Jacory is still a young QB, we've got to live with the interceptions for now.

4. Our kickoff coverage team is garbage...Pannunzio should be fired tomorrow morning.

5. CJ Spiller will be on my fantasy football team next year.

6. Teams typically blitz when they can't pressure the QB....I'm just saying.

7. Thank you South Florida for once again showing your support for the Canes. I think it was 60-40 Canes to Tigers fans. The Gators are the only team that can sellout Landshark.

8. Pipho good luck in med school, glad you paid attention in class.

9. Three words that shouldn't be uttered on this blog anymore....BCS.

10. Gator Bowl, here we come.

Posted by: Canesjunkie | October 24, 2009 at 09:25 PM

Junkie,
I think that's the first non homer comment you have ever posted. Congratulations.

As for the Canes, as long as they don't have too big of a hangover after this one they could very well be 10-2 going into the bowl. Wake got destroyed by Clemson so I don't think Wake is going to be able to hang with the Canes if it goes to a shootout. NC has had zero offense this year, so Shannon should beat Davis even with a lousy D. Duke and and USF well I don't know anything could happen but I'm starting to think that USF isn't all that. So yeah, 10-2 w/ a Gator Bowl with ND suits me just fine. I'd like to say give Shannon one more year but I know the decision is either fire him or give an extension instead of making him a lame duck next year. On the theme of next year, anything less than an ACC title is unacceptable period. Will not be able to use they're young excuse because the talent will be upperclassmen.

ANY REAL FANS IN HERE
STAND BEHIND OUR TEAM AND IT'S STAFF
I'M HURTING RIGHT NOW

1) Those saying fire Shannon should be ashamed of themselves. Shannon is a Cane and is putting it together. It is a miracle what we have done this season.

2) There WAS bad coaching but all three major coaches on the team share that blame. (no blitzing, conservative offense, 3 runs and punt)

3) The picks have to stop...can't give those to a good team, especially for TD's.

4) Most times when coaches call to avoid the loss vs. calling to win the game, the team goes down. We lost the fire that we played with when playing Oklahoma and paid the price.

5) The D played well given the injuries and the turnovers. Our offense left them hanging.

Hopefully this is the last time this happens. I am ticked but have faith in the team and Randy. Once we get one more class in we will have enough backups so that we can reload when key injuries hit.

PLEASE- no more losses like this...Clemson did not win this game, we gave it to them.

8-4 or 9-3 is still pretty darn good for me.

I've been saying this all season. We would win some we shouldn't and lose some we shouldn't. This team is very young as was the defending champs in 2007. We all do remember their 8-4 season, right?

Some of you need to get a better life. To be so bitter, full of hate, and negativity is terrible for you as an individual. Do use all a favor and find another team.

Shannon can be here forever for all I care. Unless you can do a better job and have the guts to send in your resume then STHU!

Your nothing but a num-num armchair coach that thinks they actually know something about coaching. Stop embarrassing yourself. LMBO!!!

GO CANES!!!

STILL HURTING

Clemson took us............

I CAN'T SLEEP
DAMMMMMMMMMMMMM IT

Hey, where is everybody?? Hello...Hello...Anybody there?? I'm standing here in the bandwagon and everybodys gone!! Not a Canesrule to be found...Hello! Anybody there???

Had to work so I had to TiVo the game. FYI I don't abandon ship on my team. But it's our job to scrutinize our team. That beign said we're gonna be scary next year. Go Canes!!!

People, go to games.....an empty stadium is embarrasing.

Anyone else think we should've kept Cooper in at RB all game? That boy was running with more heart than I've ever seen him run. No more arm tackles for this guy because he was running guys over and dragging defenders.

marlininseattle:

I don't think I make homer comments. Oh well...I'm a Cane fan, so maybe.

As for next year, let's see what offensive line and LB's look like before we go after ACC title.

Portland Cane:

Clemson is pretty good and Spiller is a great player. I don't think we gave this game away. Clemson looked as talented as any team we've faced. Want to talk about poorly coached teams....Clemson. That team should have 1 loss max.

As for injuries, good teams overcome, don't think you can point to one reason for the loss.

I can live with Jacory throwing interceptions this year. He's still making progress.

360...

8-4 or 9-3 is pretty good for you? OK, so you're OK with 2 more losses? Which are the remaining losses...UNC, South Florida, Wake, Duke?

I think you're alone here. At least I hope you are, because if you're not than complacency has officially made it's way to Miami. No wonder the stadium is empty.

hey if you guys didnt notice
we had chances to win they just didn't execute. We had the ball inside their 30 the ball was tipped and picked. We were driving, therefore we lost 7 points
even with all the turnovers...we still had a chance to win
we should throw in some spread with 4 wrs and a Rb becusse nobody can cover our recievers
not one team in history has 4 Dbs who can handle our top 4 WR not even 2001 miami.

Did the Canes just lose to a mediocre middle of the pack ACC team AT HOME?????

Please sign Randy to that extension immediately!!!! CLUELESS..even Mark Whipple sees it and looked away from Randy in DISGUST.

What a joke

3 INTS from Jacory, not including the fumbles and one fumble that miami was lucky to get back. TURNOVER MACHINE. I think he should win the Heisman for QB with the most combined INTS and fumbles (whether Miami recovered them or not).

Junkie- I'm a realist. Yes, one maybe two losses coming. I don't believe media hype. I also don't talk out my ace. I want my Canes to go undefeated every year, but let's be realistic. I'll give ya USF and UNC. You, me and everyone else cannot predict what teams show up on Saturdays. Clemson obviously did now didn't they?

We are extremely banged up. The players we have out for the season is unheard of. Futch was greatly missed this game obviously.

It is what it is. It is truely a dream to have a bunch of true sophmores in a BCS bowl. Come on, man.

GO CANES!!!

360Cane... Well certainly looks like you're right. I just don't like the way we accept it.

Futch is a big injury.

I didn't see the whole Whipple-Shannon thing....what happened?

Playing zone and rushing four in overtime tell me the defensive coach don't believe in his secondary

To the stadium issue: Stop being such freaking wimps. Its too hot, its too humid, its too far etc, etc. The OB was great to watch a game at. Fine, I'll give U that one. But lets be honest it was a freaking hole and a terrible design. What genius decides to put poles in the middle of the stands? God forbid you ever were seated by one (Mark Light used to have this issue as well) The place smelled like piss, was dang near impossible to park and tailgate unless you wanted to rent out abuelita's whole yard. The only part I really, really enjoyed about the OB because I was young was never did u really sit for more than 5 min at a time. Partly because well it was the OB atmosphere and the "seats" were very uncomfortable.

Ah the on-campus issue: Forget about it, never going to happen. Coral Gables, the enclave of Miami is too gorgeous to erect a Stadium upon, the community is old-money and would never let it happen to begin with. The school itself does not have the land capacity never mind the fact that they are a Private University bereft of Public Funding. Remember they can't even afford a bonafide HC and staff. On campus stadium? No Fing way. Now get off your lazy rear ends and drive the 20 or so miles to Land Shark.

Wow!! we let the game, the ACC title game and possibly the National Championship get away all in one game. Whipple made two bad calls one at the end of regulation, the other in OT. If whipple would have passed. I think we would have got the first down. Game set match. then in OT 3rd and goal run call was horrible. And if U are going to run in that situation. Why not give the ball to Berry. He is our power back. That 3rd down call on defense was also horrible. I have been saying for the longest that that we need to bring more pressure on 3rd downs. That's why we don't create turnovers. We all know pressure burst pipes.

We can criticize players for lack of effort, but the empty stands send a message that it's not a big game. Well, turns out it was a big game.

They should seat everyone in the lower bowl first. The 400 should be used for overflow. It might give it a better atmosphere.

Funny how they won't let fans go down to lower bowl. There were tons of empty seats on the Clemson sidelines.

Welcome Back Randy Phillips. Failing to make a tackle on the last play. Boy, did we miss you. Who blew the original coverage, was it Sharpton?

Everyone complains about the defense. We have no line. Look at the talent out for the season.
Futch (was emerging),Fortson, Ojomo, then you have Spence getting hurt, Moncur not 100%. Give me a break. We got lucky to be at 5-1 prior. We have talent but alot got hurt and we are relying on Senior scrubs like Philips, Sheilds, etc. Once these guys are gone, things will change. We cant even protect Jacory that well.

Green:

On the Seattle / Miami market about average attendance in a major city with NFL and College.

You also neglect the fact that UW has an on campus stadium for a school with what 30K-40K undergrads where Miami is at below 10K. That's also the reason you will consistently see UW at max capacity unless they're going 0-12 that is.

GO Canes!

Hey ARTY ... The RATS are beginning to jump off the sinking ship ...

Was just a matter of time...

Our special teams coach is a joke. Our head coach is a joke. Our defensive coordinator is a joke. U think no pressure and simple cover two is the way to get to bcs game? You better believe our offense is handicapped by Randy Shannon. We are going to lose mark whipple we give Randy Shannon a long contract. We are going to waste all this effin talent if we give him a long term contract!

Posted by: Phuckthis | October 24, 2009 at 05:09 PM

4 years running now special teams, personnel changes, and clock management are all abysmal. I'll give Shannon his props for recruiting and finally making some necessary coordinator moves, but he really needs to be held accountable for the shortcomings already. Even during our early season success, special teams was a weak spot and the clock was never managed efficiently in a crunch.

This team is light years better than last year's, but I don't see ANY progress in the areas I mentioned. And I'm sure Joe Pannunzio's a nice enough guy, but he's a miserable special teams coach and has to go already.

CLEMSON PLAYER OF THE GAME: The Miami Offense

Oh well

that's what happens when you kick field goals

Miami Coaches deserved to lose. Horrible coaching.

Posted by: Portland Cane | October 24, 2009 at 07:26 PM

All this hype... BS... They are barely a top 20 team. What a joke...
Coaches are average. Players fast but dumb.

Posted by: David | October 24, 2009 at 07:27 PM

Don't give all the blame to the coaching staff. Remember j Harris had 3 picks

Posted by: Mcarine | October 24, 2009 at 07:27 PM

that speed should be illegal

Posted by: emilio | October 24, 2009 at 07:27 PM

Pitiful

Posted by: OrlandoCane | October 24, 2009 at 07:28 PM

There you go Canes fans...point proved you don't win without defense and Miami has no defense. Have played 2 good defensive games all year Okl and GT...that's it!

Goodbye BCS....Back to a bowl game with both teams on the same sideline..

DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: canesfansc | October 24, 2009 at 07:28 PM

shannon you really laid an egg on this one, you absolutely blew a strong effort from your team and you blew it with the play calling, the coaching staff sucked all the life from this team today, clemson didn't beat this team, their own coaching staff beat this team!!

Posted by: johnny | October 24, 2009 at 07:30 PM

So much for forth quarter domination

Posted by: Mcarine | October 24, 2009 at 07:30 PM

Fire Randy Shannon, promote Mark Whipple!

Posted by: oldcanefan | October 24, 2009 at 07:31 PM

Poor play-calling on offense; Miami's defense looked confused all game. They did not look prepared to play. Great athletes, but that only gets you so far. Once again, we are exposed

Posted by: PGHCane | October 24, 2009 at 07:31 PM

This was an embarassment by our entire team. could not stop clemson to save their lives and the entire defense threw up all over the field. No coverage on the TE or the screen all game and then let that idiot get WIDE OPEN on the TD in overtime. Absolutely terrible game and trash product. Ought to be ashamed of themselves to lose to this trash team. This is why so many want Shannon fired, because he cannot win the game that he HAS to win in conference. We just gave the division to GT and they will play for the conference title. Great job guys. I guess the Minoki care care bowl is looking pretty good right now!!!!

Posted by: mikepete24 | October 24, 2009 at 07:33 PM

I can't believe this, the coaching staff put its players in a position to lose!!! this team had its back against the wall all game and when they come up with that big interception it was like the coaching staff just took the ball from jacory and personally walked it across the field and handed it to dabo sweeney. SHANNON YOU NEED TO SHOW SOME GUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: johnny | October 24, 2009 at 07:33 PM

wow we suck we will never win anything.

WE GOT OUT COACHED OUT PLAYED M

JACORY IS NOT THE QB I THOUGHT WE HAD. HE IS JUST A AVERAGE QB THAT GETS LUCKY.

WELL NO ACC CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN MAYBE WE SHOULD BACK TO GIG EAST BUT WE MIGHT LOSE THERE TOO.

WHIPPLE CAME FROM THE NFL AND YOU RUN THE BALL 3 X. HE SUCKS.

Posted by: THE CANES SUCK VERSION 2009 | October 24, 2009 at 07:33 PM

Listen, I'm just being realistic. This team is competitive, but are in no way even close to being elite. The coaching is "still" mediocre. We still are not good defensively, and the injuries are too much to handle for a team that still lacks depth. I really want this team back, I mean really back, not just this media hype BS. Unfortunately shannon's goin nowhere, and we won't win with him. He's had enough time. I'm sick of this crap!

Posted by: Beacane | October 24, 2009 at 07:36 PM

Makes me wanna puke!!!! I am sooo tired of thecanes blowing it....... our defense couldn't stop a girl scout team, Im embarassed to wear canes stuff. and JH I have to admit i bought into him early in the season but his picks cost this team over and over and what i thought was gonna be the next star QB has show he is decent and cool headed but isnt gonna lead the canes back to the title. "another" wasted season........ bah!!!! and as Mcarine said there is no such thing as fourth quarter belonging to the canes anymore, so if you cant show the heart keep the F-ing fingers down!!!!

Posted by: Kkeith | October 24, 2009 at 07:36 PM

Wow, I cannot believe the pathetic coaching in this game. The way this team played today shows me that no matter how much talent we have, the coaching will always be below par and we will never get anywhere. Now, your going to see the triple option boring offense in a BCS bowl game since that is where GT is going. You go 3-1 against TOP competition and then lay an egg to CLEMSON AT HOME, I mean common!!!!! I could understand VT, but damn not this trash team with only two players worth a damn. Their QB is trash and we let him throw all over us!!!!! Terrible game at the worst possible time.

Posted by: mikepete24 | October 24, 2009 at 07:39 PM

whipple was the one that decided to go for three straight runs after the int in the endzone! whipple was the one that decided to go for nothing but runs in overtime!!!!!!!

Posted by: johnny | October 24, 2009 at 07:39 PM

I'm starting it right now, firerandyshannonandhiremarkwhipple.com, and nothing we do from here on out will change that, because we just lost our chance to not only the national championship but the acc champ so no bcs bowl.

Posted by: Phuckthis | October 24, 2009 at 07:42 PM

This team is not ready for "prime-time" yet. The defense has been passed on all year long. There was no consistent pressure on the QB. The offense is good but not great yet. Jacory continues to make bad throws and he needs to put more power into his throws. One thing for sure is that he is a calm, cool leader. Next year is his year. Not sure how much the coaches take the hit for this one. Remember this was a team that was expected to go 7-5 by most preseason polls. Heartbreaking loss.

Posted by: RazorCane | October 24, 2009 at 07:46 PM

For u all against whipple, he is not the problem, Shannon is the problem. If u have a defensive coach, he will try to win with defense everytime, even if the defense can't stop anything, it doesn't matter. If u hire a def. Coordinator to coach that's what u get. If u hit an offensive coordinator to coach, u get offense.

Posted by: Phuckthis | October 24, 2009 at 07:47 PM

Get Shannon the HELL OUT OF THERE!!

Posted by: PGHCane | October 24, 2009 at 07:48 PM

I would reconsider Shannon's contract extension if I were Hocutt... We need a big time coach and we don't have one...

Jacory isn't ready either, to many picks... We need to bring in a couple QB recruits, because he isn't as good as we think

Posted by: DC JRod | October 24, 2009 at 07:49 PM

Well said Phuckthis. Shannon has been the problem all along, great recruiter, but not head coach material.

Posted by: oldcanefan | October 24, 2009 at 07:54 PM

Let's see....at Wake (Possible loss), vs. Va (win), at North Carolina (definate loss, can't beat butch davis no matter what), vs Duke (win), at South Florida (possible loss). The ACC championship game is gone, lets just face it. VT and GT would both have to lose another game and that is NOT going to happen. Better luck next year but tougher sched next year.

Posted by: mikepete24 | October 24, 2009 at 07:57 PM

sad thing is , I wonder how many recruits that were on the fence just jumped off after seing that "stellar" coaching job.

Posted by: Kkeith | October 24, 2009 at 08:00 PM

i cant believe this lost!! went from orange bowl bid to peach bowl again! im sick of playing in that damn game!! it seems like every time we have things rolling we have a game like this, where we dont come out ready to play. i know clemson is a good team!!! but they already have 3 loses and had no bis coming to our house and beating us all over the field. we got out played all day!! speaking of our house, its sad nobody comes to the games. u see this on tv and nobody is there. wow. i live in louisville ky so i cant make it to a game every week, but ive there already to one. i mean UofL is terrible but they have 60 plus every week.. jus wish people would come out to support the team. with all that said.. its jus one game, so anything can happen, just hurts to lose!!

Posted by: Nick | October 24, 2009 at 08:05 PM

If Hocutt extends Shannon, I will not re-up my season tickets... As fans, especially the booster's, they need to make some noise and force this athletic department to go out and spend some money on a big time coach!!

As a recent alum and donor to the University, I am tired of the ineptitude of Mr. Shannon... FIRE HIS A.S.S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: DC JRod | October 24, 2009 at 08:09 PM

I am still in shock that the team lost this game. Absolutely no excuses for this loss. Game totally on the coaching, or lack of it. I'm sorry but unless we get a big time coach, we will be playing in the Peach Bowl for years to come. How can you play zone coverage on 3rd and 11 and let that crap/trash QB throw the ball all over the field. Lovett sucks and he is an attrocious coach. Look at our defensive stats this year, they suck.

Posted by: mikepete24 | October 24, 2009 at 08:14 PM

Put it this way, if UM had one by 3 points would that have made them that much better a team today? Does a loss in OT really make you change your opinion so quickly? They are what they are. A unexpected surprise from a team picked to be mediocre at best.

Posted by: RazorCane | October 24, 2009 at 08:15 PM

R U F'ING KIDDING ME!...Top 10 ranked team losing to a 3-3 team at home! Unbelievable.
Just goes to show, u can't win without defense. This was a joke of a game and the coaching was horrendous. Anybody ever here of a blitz!

Posted by: Destincane | October 24, 2009 at 08:56 PM

I am tired of the we are young excuses... Give me some f.u.king results already... As an Alum/donor, I have invested so much money into this team and see nothing but dissappointment...

Go and get a REAL COACH already!!! Look at FL, AL, TX, etc.. They have difference-makers at the CEO position!

Fire Shannon and elevate the Whip!!!

Posted by: Fire Shannon | October 24, 2009 at 08:57 PM

WHY DID YOUKICK TO CJ SPILLER? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY????

WHY DID YOU COACHES PLAY TO LOSE? WHYRUN THE BALL UP THE MIDDLE 3 TIMES WITH 5 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK, KNOWING FULL WELL THAT CLEMSON WOULD GET A SHORT FIELD?

LOSER MENTALITY= LOSER TEAMS.

WINNERS TAKE CHANCES TO TRY TO WIN. LOSERS PLAY SCARED. THESE COACHES GAVE THE GAVE TO CLEMSON. WHERE WAS JIMMMY GRAHAM OR EPPS ON 3ND AND 3?/////

THIS WAS EMBARASSING. THE KIDS PLAYED HARD, WE SHOWCASED OUR TALENT, THEN IT WAS UP TO THE COACHES.

THE COACHES WASTED TIME OUTS.

THE COACHES ARGUED ON THE SIDELINES.

THE COACHES CALLED A ZONE D ON 3RD AND 11. ONE WAY TO LOSE, A TD BY CLEMSON.

THE COACHES RAN THE BALL IN OT WITH 1ST DOEWN AND GOAL.

TRANSLATION: YOU PLAY SCARED, PLAY CONSERVATIVELY, PLAY NOT TO LOSE, AND ALL OF YOUR LIFE YOU WILL BE LIKE A CLEMSON, A DUKE, A WAKE FOREST, A MISSOURI, A SYRACUSE. LOSERS, PRETENDERS, WANNA BES.

THIS PATHETIC EXAMPLE OF PLAY CALLING AND COACHING WAS EMBARASSING ALL AROUND.

WHAT ABOUT THE TURN OUT? WHERE THERE 35,O000 IN THE STANDS- STADIUM LOOKED EMPTY.

THIS WAS A BAD LOSS. WORSE THAN THE VT LOSS.

Posted by: I'M HURT BY THIS | October 24, 2009 at 09:04 PM

This was a bad,bad loss. I think if this team ends season like last year,we h might have to get rid of Randy.Yelling at OC is a classless move. His clock mgnt was deadful and they played scared at the end. No pass rush??
No defense, one more year and get rid od Randy and Donna S too. Get a real coach like the Gators or USC.

Posted by: cooltommy | October 24, 2009 at 09:06 PM

our linebackers need a lot work!! jus awful right now!!! they r clueless out there, jus look at the tape, every snap they out talking, pointing, yelling trying to figure out what d to run!!! i mean have the time they arent even ready when they play starts!!!

Posted by: Nick | October 24, 2009 at 09:08 PM

The bottom line is this game was lost by the coaching staff opting to go conservative on offense (it reminded me of the predictable canes of last year) and rely on a tired defense to win the game. Go canes maybe a new years day game. The coaching staff needs to understand that close games and conservative calling can and will cost games. I hope that Randy and the whole football staff appologizes for million dollar mistakes by losing BCS chance.

Posted by: Canetimejc | October 24, 2009 at 09:37 PM

man,i am so angry, deflated, pissed, you name it.
but...let's look at the situation. we are ahead of what almost everyone on this board would have expected before the start of the season. i'm not talkig wins/loses but progress of the program.
i will agree that todays loss hangs on the coaches.
those clemson screen passes, kicking to spiller (although the borad would have gone nuts if we squibbed), jacory's INTs, the time their QB had, the AWFUL offensive management before overtime, PENALTIES!!! - all on the coaches to me.
But...this is a young team with new coaches.
there is no doubt that the coaches have the passion - did you see whipple's face about to explode before halftime.
there will be no easy games the rest of the season. let's work on getting better, getting the recruits and ending strong.
if this post rambles it's because i had about a million beers watching the game.
go canes! finish strong, win whatever bowl you are in and come back angry and hungry!!

Posted by: tt | October 24, 2009 at 09:38 PM

Nobody goes to the games because they know that this team (Shannon) is a FRAUD!!!!!!!

Fire that piece of schiza(s.h.i.t in german)!!

I am so tired of his punk a.s.s!!

Anyone who thinks differently has blinders on!

Spend some money Shalala/Hocutt!! Do not settle for continual mediocrity!

I'd fire his a.s.s at the press conference if I were the athletic director! The ineptitude of this team makes me throw up in my mouth

Posted by: Fed Up Cane! | October 24, 2009 at 10:43 PM

People who think that top recruits want to play for this disgraceful program are on METH!!

Who would want to play for Shannon? I mean come on! Smell the fuking coffee!!!

He is a joke/disgrace/in over his head/pitiful/piece of schiza CEO!!

FIRE HIS A.S.S IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Fed Up Cane! | October 24, 2009 at 10:46 PM

If Shannon isn't fired, U can count me out as a 2010 season ticket holder... I mean, why am I going to spend money on a product that is going to continually let me down?

Posted by: Fed Up Cane! | October 24, 2009 at 10:49 PM

You people are funny realistically what did expect of Miami this year, they have played much better than much of the experts that they would. Miami is on the right track to being succesful

It seems after one loss everyone forgets of the succes they have had this season. A team like Miami will have losses like today but they will have better days.

Posted by: A fair fan | October 24, 2009 at 10:59 PM

360Cane,

Num-num? I am a fuking realist!! Stop denying the truth... We need a real CEO, and U know it!!

U Homer!

Posted by: Fed Up Cane! | October 24, 2009 at 11:04 PM

Its funny how someone calls a real season ticket holder a gator fan. Maybe that person should continue to blog instead of going to games. Shannon is an embarrassment. 3 years later and the defensive whiz has done nothing. Love his stances. Miami really didn't need Patrick Peterson. Miami is apperantly loaded at CB.

Posted by: Cav | October 24, 2009 at 11:15 PM

You are soo right. Shannon is mister consistent. Exactly how many coordinators has Miami had? Lets stop firing coordinators and just get to the root of the problem. Anybody think Whipple is going to put up working for a moron? He is more qualified and should be the HC.

Posted by: Cav | October 24, 2009 at 11:52 PM

we lost this game because of one reason: coaching.

enough said.

Posted by: ooster | October 25, 2009 at 12:15 AM

Just wait til AJ Highsmith is Ur Staring QB ...

What's amazing about U Cane Tards is, that after 2 Close wins over FSU and Oklahoma, U were world beaters and talking 11-1 and National Championship ... Now after an OT loss U full of doom and gloom ...

MAKE UP UR DAMN MINDS !!!

Relax, after U escape Duke, U'll be "Back" right ?

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/breaking-news/story/1299483.html

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4593415

look who's baaaaack ...

What, U wouldn't post my comment??? U can't handle the truth!!! Bandwagon U!!! Don't worry, you'll be back on "top" next week!!

Very tough lose!! The thing that get's me is that Alabama (the #2 team in the country) almost/should have lost to an UNRANKED Tennessee team AT HOME. USC (the #4 team in the country) almost lost to an UNRANKED Oregan State team AT HOME. UF (the #1 team in the country) almost/should have (thanks to the refs) lost to an UNRANKED Arkansas team AT HOME. I know that close only counts in hand grenades and horse shoes and that those teams won while we lost. Those teams were extremely fotrtunate to pull out those wins and the ball just did not bounce our way in this game. I know that Pete Carroll, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer have all won NC's, but the thing that gets me is this: Do, you think that UF, USC or Alabama's fan bases calling to have the coach fired? No, you know why? There fan bases are realistic!! Any week in D1 football an unranked team (especially a conference foe) can upset at top 10 ranked team!! That is how it has been since the NCAA cut the scholarship amount years ago.

UM fans are sooo unloyal it is a shame!! That is why only 40,000 show up to the game (guys who are out of the area this excluded you). We couldn't get even 50,000 to a game against a very good opponent on a nice sunny Saturday 3:30 kickoff!!??? We don't go to games, and at the first sign of any adversity we play the old reliable card that we have tucked away in our back pocket LETS FIRE RANDY!!!! I really believe that we have some so called fans who really enjoyed this lose so they could get back up on their soap boxes with the "Randy needs to go talk". Where were you guys after we beat GT, did you give RANDY any credit then for schemeing with John Lovett to hold GT to under 100 yards?? Where were you when we rebounded from that tough loss in VT and RANDY got the team ready and we beat OU at home?? Did you give RANDY any credit for guiding the team to a 3-1 start when you really wanted us to go 0-4? Did you give RANDY any credit for waiting a couple of month's to make a great hire with Mark Whipple (I know he made some questionable calls yesterday, but he is still a grat hire)when you guys wanted him to hire someone 3 days after he fired Patrick Nixs? "What's Randy doing?" Why is he taking so long"? I bet we have no money and we are hiring on the cheap"? "He's going to screw this up too". Coach Shannon is doing a GREAT job!! True fans see that. There is still a lot to play for and he and his coaching staff will get the team to bounce back!! We all thought this team, if lucky could go 8-4 (9-3 at best). We have the chance to finish 10-2!! I am as disappointed as everyone on this board, but I support the coaches, team, it's players and it's direction!! Everyone has their right to gripe, but to say "FIRE RANDY"!! After each lose, is so sophomoric. Stop the blaming and come to the games and support the coaches, team and players. Coach Shannon and his staff are doing a great job, we just hit a bump in the road. Let's go Canes and beat Wake Forest!!

CANES FANS LOVE TO COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT WHERE WERE YOU TO BE FOUND AT THE GAME ?40 THOUSAND AN WE ARE RANK IN THE TOP 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! umcanes you hit the nail right on the head. Great job by you and your family. I don't know how often you get down ,but if you will be down again, I would like buy you a beer at the Virginia or Duke game. Travel safely, keep supporting the team and oh yeah, GO CANES!!

Cane4life,

True fans see when a man is over his head. Miami waited with Coker and got burned and cant afford to do the same with the Shannon. The program is now going on 7 years without a BCS bowl.

Here is a newsflash for you. USC, UF, Bama won those games. Miami lost theirs.

The offense is awesome if they open it up! But the defense is embarrising ! Giving up almost 30 points a game, that's not cane football! That's jr. All American football.

You are right I live in Chicago and get to a game when I can! But the locals you are a joke. The stadium is always empty! I could walk up and get a ticket! You can't find a ticket at a notre dame game

Man Tebow looked good throwing TD's to Miss States Johnthan Banks last night. How is it that the Heisman winner couldn't even throw a touch down for his own team?

How about that goal line offense UF has? Their really rolling along at 1 of 6 times in the redzone.

I don't think the Fire Randy Shannon talk will end anytime soon. We are going to be talking about firing Shannon until he wins multiple championships. That's just the way it is when you have a coach who is learning on the job.

We treat the Canes like a pro team because that's the expectation here.

I want to see us play everybody now. We're going to the Gator Bowl anyway, so let's see what we've got on our roster

No more babying Arthur Brown, he should start next week. Let McGee get his reps...I expect him to get burned a couple of times. Let the kid learn how to play at this level.

No Defense
