Grading the Canes: OU Report Card

The unpredictable Miami Hurricanes are back. Just when you think you've got your finger on what this team is all about, they go out and surprise you again. What a win, what an effort, what an amazing 3-1 start and step up for Randy Shannon's program. Nobody who covers this team on a daily basis (not even the Kool-Aid drinkers) not even secret Canes fan Kirk Herbstreit thought UM would bounce back from its loss at Virginia Tech and win three of its first four tough games.

Now, the Canes control their destiny (somewhat). Win out and there's no doubt UM will play in a BCS Bowl game. Win out and get a little help with a Virginia Tech loss or two and who knows there's a chance UM could be playing in Pasadena. Here's the good news for the Canes (as long as they don't fall asleep), only two teams left on their schedule should really be tough tests -- at North Carolina (Nov. 14) and at South Florida (Nov. 28).

Here's who gets the love for the effort against OU...

Randy Shannon > Game balls - Offense: Javarris James (his 150 yards rushing on 15 carries were huge). Defense: Sean Spence (his team-leading 10 tackles were great to see). Special teams: Matt Bosher (did a great job pinning the Sooners and making them go the length of the field). Coaches: All of them.

> Helmet stickers - Offense: Jacory Harris (had two bad early picks, but was pinpoint the rest of the way).Defense: Ray Ray Armstrong (for his big lift), Vaughn Telemaque (for his nine tackles) and the entire beat up defensive line. Special teams: Corey Nelms (for his huge hit).

> Quarterbacks: Two of his first four passes went for interceptions. But after those two mistakes, Harris played like the Heisman candidate I still say he is. He finished 19 of 28 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. He made great decisions and throws on the game-clinching drive and threaded a perfect pass between four DBs to Dedrick Epps on his 11-yard pass. If not for the two early mistakes, Harris would get an A. Grade: A-.

Javarris James > Running game: How about Javarris James? I've been one of his biggest critics most of his career, wondering why UM continued to feature him as the primary back when Graig Cooper was playing better. James made me eat my words in the Canes' biggest win since he's been here. His career-high 150 yards were great, but what I enjoyed most were the tough, six and seven yard bursts he provided against what was the nation's No. 1 run defense. UM finished with 140 yards on 32 carries when you throw in Jacory Harris' four sacks. But make no mistake, the 175 yards UM gained were huge and as big a reason as any why the Canes won this game. Grade: A.

> Receivers/tight end: There were a few unnecessary drops. But all in all, when 11 different guys catch passes you have to tip your hat not only to Jacory Harris for spreading the wealth, but for guys stepping up and making plays. Aldarius Johnson made a nice return and finished with four catches for 45 yards. Travis Benjamin had three for 61 yards and a touchdown and Dedrick Epps made three clutch catches including one for a touchdown. And how about Jimmy Graham? He promised he'd catch the next ball thrown his way and he did. All he does is catch touchdowns: he's got two catches for two touchdowns. Grade: A-.

> Blocking: The Sooners stayed true to their season average by getting to Jacory Harris for four sacks. Jeremy Beal abused Matt Pipho and company for three of them. But where UM earned it's good grade was being physical in the run game and opening up some gaping holes. Big bad Gerald McCoy? He had a half tackle. That's a credit to UM's interior, AJ Trump, Joel Figueroa, Harland Gunn and Orlando Franklin did their job. Grade: B.

Ray Ray and Spence > Front Seven: Welcome back Sean Spence. Welcome back UM's good run defense. Welcome back pass rush. While things weren't pretty early, Spence and company answered the call over the final three quarters. Spence finished with a team-leading 10 tackles and Colin McCarthy -- playing injured -- showed his toughness after coming in during the second quarter and finishing with seven tackles. Oklahoma finished with 153 yards on 42 attempts. But take away Chris Brown's 48-yard burst at the goalline and the Sooners have probably their worst ay running the football in years. Allen Bailey and Marcus Robinson both got sacks and UM produced four quarterback hurries as a unit to make Landry Jones feel awfully uncomfortable. Grade: A-.

> Secondary: How do you measure the impact and lift freshman Ray Ray Armstrong provided this unit? With leading tackler Randy Phillips out and UM shorthanded by injuries at the position, Armstrong's bone jarring hits brought UM's defense and the home crowd to life. Vaughn Telemaque had a career-best nine tackles himself and except for one bad blown coverage, Brandon Harris was special. He had a sack and forced a huge fumble to help UM grab the lead. The only guy who had a forgetful game? Sam Shields. He got burned in coverage multiple times and was definitely somebody Landry Jones and the Sooners went after. All-in-all, UM limited Landry to 188 yards passing on 30 attempts. Not bad at all. Grade: B+.

> Special teams: There were a pair of ugly moments: Joe Joseph getting that bonehead penalty for running into the punter (even though it was very questionable) and the 51-yard punt return Dominique Franks had from his one yard line to put Oklahoma in position to come back and win the game. But overall, there were no major mistakes in kickoff coverage, Matt Bosher averaged 45.8 yards a punt including three that pinned Oklahoma inside the 20 and Mike James and Graig Cooper did decent jobs giving UM's offense good field position on kickoffs. And who will ever forget walk-on Corey Nelms' big hit to start the second half? That fueled UM's nice start to the second half. Grade: B+.

> Coaching: After being out coached by Virginia Tech, coordinators Mark Whipple and John Lovett put their players in the perfect positions to win this game. Whipple made the right decision to make OU respect UM's running game first before unleashing Harris and the passing attack. Defensively, after a terrible opening drive, Landry Jones and the OU offense simply looked uncomfortable with what Lovett was throwing at them. Even though Shields got burned, UM was in the right pass protection schemes. Personnel wise, Lovett made the right decision to cut Ray Ray Armstrong loose and continue to rotate him. UM coach Randy Shannon had his team ready, mentally and physically for this game. You couldn't have asked for anything more. Had UM lost this game, it certainly would not have been his or any of his assistants faults. Grade A+.

pedro,

I'm shocked, you have been on this board all day but now all of a sudden went RED and left!

Quit blushing and come back.

Love,

Steve

Pedro loves to ride his buro to his girl soccer games. He's just mad his green card was taken away after they caught him sleeping with his buro. GO CANES! Keep Pedro the buro rider squirming. VATOS LOCOS FOREVER! Remember little Pedro's don't follow football they follow Futbol.

pedro,

wow, you must of left the building red faced.

See you tonight.

Love,

Steve

I finally figured OEDRO out. He just wants to see how many of us will respond to his loney-tune blogs. I counted and over 1/2 of the posted words from the start to this time has either been by him or someone else who mentions his name. This is just what he wants. He wants to see his name. This is his daily 15 minutes of fame. So here is my promise "We all know he is so far off base that he can't be a fan or even know football. For all we know he may even be just a kid. So I personally pledge never to mention his name again in reffering to this blog. If we all do he will have nothing to read but his own posts and he will simply just go away. So everyone please join with me to cast Pedro to the curb see ya BOY we have had enough.

A friend of mine had a dog named Pedro. Lol, poor fella.

I just returned from visiting SI's site snf looked at the top 11 teams. Every team on the list other than ourselves could loose and 2 of the teams play each other. Can not wait till Sunday or Monday 10/11-10/12 Miami with a great stuff of our next team should really boost us closer to the top. Lets hope that BC can take care of VT at home. then they can kill each other the next week. The ACC Coastal Div is ours to win with a little help from a few friends. BTW could this really be BB last yr at FSU holly cow.

We won by 1. Jacory laughed after throwing two touchdown drives away at the beginning of the game. We ran the clock out on the last drive when a touchdown was looming. That's a 21 point swing. Is Sam Bradford gonna score 22 more points to tie that game up?

all Little pedro wants is attention stop givein it to him and he'll go away

Ufanfrom WV- u are 100% correct. The 2 initial ints were at least, what, 6 points minimum? Thats a 13 point reverse. The horrendous running into the punter call was a first down and a TD, add 7. That is, if Um doesnt score on the next possession. That's 20. The last drive ended in Ok territory. If it were the Nurban the liar, he would have kicked a fiedl goal. Like he did to Um last year, up 23-3, with 1 minute left in the game. Just to beat the spread. THAT is why I hate Urban Meyer and the turds so much. I didnthate the gators as much when Spurrier was coach, b/c he was funny as he---. Zook, I could do without. But Urban is skanky, slimey, like a Personal injury lawyer. There he was like a slime ball at the St Thomas game- wish somebody from Lauderdale lakes had come over and put one on him. Whatever.

USF had 20 put on by a lame Syracuse. Oklahoma put 20 on UM. DO the math babay!

And for all of you all--- geez I love to be hated!

Brett hamburger: You are a major tool. If yousay Herbie one more time I am going to puke! Herbstreit should say to him- stop calling me Herbie or I will call you Burger. He hates UM always has always will- It is soooooo obvious! Sc-ew you Munkberger

These are my preds:

FAMU-W (4-1)
UCF- W (5-1)
Clem- L (5-2) Hope I am wrong
NC- W (6-2)
Duke W (7-2)
Va- W (8-2)
Wake W (9-2)
USF W (10-2)

What bowl it is?

clemson is at home.. if we(fans) show up to the game and ignite that defense.. i dont think we lose that 1...
our fanbase needs to realize the importance of home games and go support our kids...
everyteam in the acc will show up ready to knock us off stay grounded and foces and well get through this

FAMU- No worries
UCF- NO worries
Clem- lost to a bad GT team, lost to TCU, and lost to a horrendous Maryland team. i thought they were going to win the coastal division but i guess not. should be a walk-through at home.
NC- no offense without tate and hicks. lost to virginia who was winless and to GT. Biggest test on the road but they are no VT.
Duke- c'mon really, hopefully a TD for graham haha
Va- lost to a D2 school, top 10 worst team in country
Wake- decent team but cant match the talent
USF- aside from the win at FSU, they beat 2 D2 schools, a sun belt team, and syracuse. should be a good game but DA U should win.
*Best case scenario: UM wins out, Florida beats LSU, LSU beats Alabama, OU beats Texas, Penn State beats OSU, ans UM plays Florida in the NC game.
*If not the NC game then other options: OB if VT looses 2 acc games vs Pitt(welcome back wanstadt), Fiesta vs Ohio state/USC?, Cotton versus Texas? Sugar Bowl vs Alabama(Nick Saban!)/LSU(revenge)/Florida if they loose

There are so many intriguing possible match ups, this season will be fun

I have spent this evening going to other sights and here is what I have found. I truly believe that there is not a team left on our sced. that can beat us. We will only beat ourself. Now on to other things. For the last several years the U has lost out in the last moment several real good players due to our overal record. Now I believe it is FSU's turn. Especially with the topic going around that this might be BB last year. I think alot of kids that are looking towards FSU's way of playing and might just have a change of heart. Who knows for sure, I only know that FSU seems to be hurting and still has a few games that look real tuff to me.
In closing I think this year for Miami might be different in recruiting before all is said and done Miami will find themselves not only in the top 5 in the BCS standings but also near the top of the 2010 recruiting class. Thanks in part to the 2 QB's that flew the coop in fear of sitting on the bench. Man it is so good to be a true die hard canes fan, baby we are back.

Looks like KOOL AID was passed out at the game. Wow you beat Oklahoma by one minus Gresham, Broyles, and Sam Bradford. Now you are going to Pasadena. BAHWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You guys are setting youselves up for a big fall!

Randy Shannon is clueless! Clueless!

I hope you guys sign him to a extension right now! With Bobby Bowden and Randy Shannon at the helm, there is no doubt who the #1 team in Florida will be for many years.

I hope you all are still all hyped up after 1-2 losses on the weak rest of the schedule. It is coming! Then the young excuses will be all out in full effect.

You guys have a very mediocore OL and DL and arent winning squat until that improves. Too bad, Waaaaaaandy Shannon cant recruit OL and DL.

VTECH wins the ACC and has to lose twice for Miami to have any chance. That is if Miami goes undefeated in the ACC the rest of the way which is a longshot.

Jacory Harris turns the ball over more than Ryan Leaf. Brutal! Its like the ball has butter on it. He fumbles so much and is lucky his team somehow regains possession. Dude better focus on holding onto the football rather than pink suits.

I thought we "popped" you earlier Pimple?

Great job Canes. One game at a time. Don't lose focus and keep improving each game. Don't look back and hope for the best.

Great job Manny. I totally agree with ur grades. Great win for the Canes but the 24hr rule is still in effect win or lose. Time to get ready for the next game. We still got a lot of work to do. We got FAMU next. I would like to see us get up big by halftime rest Jacory and get AJ and other guys some playing time. This should be the type of game where we see alot of T.Streeter,K.Thompkins,L.Chambers, M.James, D.Berry,B.Jones,B.Washington,A.Brown, J.Futch,Buchannon,B.McGee.

KOOL AID

If I was an SEC fan I would be embarassed about the childish coaches and the lack of academic standards. But hey, these are people who would vote for Sarah Palin. :-)

Better than that imbecile. Whatever, let's move away from politics.

Wow, who'd of thought that the Thanksgving weekend game against USF could be huge? I'm hoping both teams win out, the Bulls will need to knock off Top 10 Cincinati and then well.. I'll be coming home to the 305 for the holiday and am a little disappointed the game is in Tampa and not Land Shark so comtemplating whether or not to do the drive. If it ends up being a Top 10 matchup then shoot who's buying the gas?

PS ... YOU SUCK

HEY MANNY, does jacory have a shock collar around his neck? will it shock him if he crosses the line of scrimmage? a run here and there is not a bad thing. keep the d honest. what do you think? will he ever be "allowed" to use that aspect of his game?
if he had run against vtech may be another/better outcome.
thanks
go canes. great crowd on saturday!

Nice grading Manny. Sam Shields was getting burned! He would try to jam te receiver but the wide out would give him a quick move and move up the field...being an X receiver he should know what a WR's instincts are. Hope he gets it going though! I'm with you on Cooper being the better back, but boy did Javaris James show he can bring it to the "Best Run D" in the country. Only if James had that burst Cooper has, he could of taken some of those big runs to the house. Both guys have great speed, but Cooper has that extra 3rd gear when needed! Loved my Canes and forever will! Wish I was back in Miami..I'm rooting for you guys all the way in California!! Let's go show the Nation the Great State of Miami!!!

PEDRO = NUT SUCKER

HE HAS NO LIFE, NO KIDS, NO WIFE, LIVES WITH HIS MOTHER IN THE BASEMENT, WATCHES STAR WARS ALL DAY AND IS A FAT 400LBS+ JUNKIE THATS ALWAYS TALKING TRASH ABOUT THE CANES MIAMI MUST HAVE BEAT WHO EVER HIS TEAM IS BADLY ITS OK PEDRO CAUSE WE ALL FEEL YOUR PAIN WE TRULLY DO

MANNY!!!!!

What's up mi brode...

Great job as usual! Wherever I'm at in the country I need to know what Manny Navarro is up to and what he has to say about The []_[]!

Is there any way that you can give us a little post-OU recruiting analysis (I'd love at least one comprehensive piece on recruiting per week but I don't want to ask for too much)?

We NEED your opinion on so many recruiting-related things that are happening lately, such as:

* Tthe STA-Byrne game

* The Canes-OU game the night after and the bunch of recruits that went to the game

* The possibility of Bobby Bowden getting kicked out and whether you expect that to hurt or help us in terms of recruiting

* Booker T's duo of Trail and Dunbar committing to UF

* Overall, what recruits are telling you about Miami

* This http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=4533170

* Your opinion as to why SO MANY local recruits are picking other programs over The []_[] (as you predicted?). When we were losing, we landed the #1 class; now that we're winning, we're struggling (IMO). What are your thoughts?

Thanks so much for your dedication!!! The Marlins are done; does that mean you're "ours" now (i.e. Canes fans!)?

GO CANES!!!

--CanesFanStuckInCali

It's time to sit Sam Shield, he smells like BURN TOAST !!!!!! Put him back on offense.

Even though Sam Shields missed on his jams causing the WRs to get open, he sure does have closing speed. I still give him props because he is improving. I noticed he was turning to look back at the ball which he hasn't done all year so they've definitely worked on that. Once he gets his jams down, he'll be an excellent CB. I'm starting the "Keep Sam Shields In" movement! He even almost had an INT. If he had that, all the Sammy cry babies would go away.

I played DB (SS and CB) in college, and can only imagine what's he's had to go through learning that position. It's not like he's played CB all his life.

That's like you guys not giving Randy Shannon a chance. I would love to come watch you at your job so I can criticize every little thing you do.

GO CANES!!!

It still amazes me all the trolls on this blog. The Gafors will lose 4-5 games this year. Oh, wait. They only play one ranked team that lost to MSU (if they could score from the 1 yard line) who GT destroyed.

The Gafors haven't played a single team yet with a winning record! That is so pathetic! BAWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

It's ok. They'll get the recruits that we're not showing any love!

GO CANES!!!

Are the Gafors really bragging about getting Dunbar? I love how they show everyday they know nothing about football. I mean, let's do our research. THE U's returning WRs:

All of them...

While the Gafors are losing FIVE to graduation. Duh!

Obviously Dunbar wants to go where there is no competition. It's not like the Gafors WRs are lighting it up these day. At least with Tebow leaving, it'll open up their passing game. No more Tebow run left, right and up the middle.

GO CANES!!!

Memo to all of you Shannon Haters,
There is a huge line forming outside of the football offices that goes as far as I-95 north and Randy Shannon is @ the front of the line bending over. PUCKER UP !!!!!

What does Bama, Texas and OSU have in common?

THEY ALL PLAYED IN BCS BOWLS WITHOUT WINNING THEIR CONFERENCE!

GO CANES!!!

Ok, that was fun. Peace...

GO CANES!!!

Pedro,
Get off the computer at your local library and get back to mowing my lawn. Once again your cutting the grass too low. I know, I know, but he needs the money.

360Cane, I feel ya but Bama, Texas and OSU played in just BCS bowl games. We want the NC.

Here's a little nugget:

http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/4660/video-is-miami-an-elite-team

Are we top 5 after this weekend or next? Well, we know #1 or #4 are going down this weekend. It'll be fun to watch!

GO CANES!!!

gaytor fans are looking for any reason to put down Miami since they can no longer speak to the charactor of Cane players. Lets face it, Miami players have not gotten in trouble with the law for years even under Larry Coker.

Ray Ray is going to be a superstar. When Randy Phillips return, will Brandon Harris start at corner in place of Shields? Shields has hurt us this season but I give him a lot of credit.

Can my favorite cuz and player get some love please, #94 Eric Moncur!!! He's coming back better and stronger.

Hey Pedro and all the other folks that keep on stating that OK did not have its Heisman winner and best tight end in the game and that diminishes the Canes victory....
The Canes also did not have their best defensive linemen, cornerbacks, safeties in the game but showed the depth required to win as backups stood up and performed. You can argue if we were full strength we could've won by more. OK's vaunted top defense could not stop the Canes from running out the last 4 minutes of the game. Give the Canes the obvious credit they deserve. They won and they were not at full strength either.

The Gators can have their 6'7 195 lb DE (Trail) and 6'2 165 WR (Dunbar).

Let's put it this way, if Streeter who is 10 times better than Dunbar isn't seeing the field, than how will Dunbar?

Lastly, if Dye struggled to make the DE rotation with the plethera of injuries, than how is Trail?

Trail and Dunbar are overrated and they know that with a rebuilding UFlu next year, they may get a chance to play... They wouldn't get that chance in Miami with all the young studs at DE and WR.

Miami has at least 6 receivers better than any at UFlu and with Ojomo, Robinson, Vernon, Dye, Bailey, Regis, Fortson, etc at D-Line, Trail would be a backup on the scout team.

Dye got hurt in camp, but wasn't going to play over the guys who are on the field now...come on... Next year, he should.

buckheadcane, how do you know that all those recruits were there? are you from atlanta? were you at the sidelines?

i'll ask again, buckheadcane, how do you know that all those recruits were on the sideline? also, are you from atlanta? were you at the game?

buckheadcane, how do you know all those recruits were on the sideline? from the sound of your name, it sounds like you are from atlanta. were you on the sidelines during the game? just wondering

buckheadcane, were you on the sidelines? how do you know all those recruits were on the sideline? just wondering

buckheadcane, were you on the sidelines? how do you know all those recruits were on the sideline? just wondering

can no longer comment as a guest, what is this? cuba?

ahaha, oops, i look like a fool, the site was just down and my comments were delayed. i'm a jackass

but to also add in my defense, the servers for this blog site and miamiherald.com really, really suck. how can a legitimate newspaper be run in this fashion? high school kids can run and design better websites

Canes r back!!!
