Are the Canes really done with Todd Chandler?

Everybody and their mother is reporting that Miami Northwestern defensive tackle Todd Chandler is no longer committed to the University of Miami. But is it true? Or, are we dealing with a recruit's bruised ego and a tiff between a program and a local star?

Todd Chandler  I spoke to Chandler twice Tuesday on my cell phone during visits to Miramar High and Belen Jesuit -- the two remaining South Florida high school football teams playing for state championships this week in Orlando. My impression of this internet ratings sensation of a story: the 6-foot, 300-pound prospect (considered a four-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout.com) is upset with the Canes because he hasn't heard from them in a while. But is Chandler definitely not headed to Miami anymore? No. And I won't believe it until he signs a scholarship to another school until National Signing Day.

Chandler has been a UM commitment since his junior year. He plays for the one high school in Miami-Dade County the Canes could ill-afford to anger for dropping one of their players. You remember the West, don't you? The school Randy Shannon and his entire staff came to watch in October during the Northwestern-Central nationally televised showdown. The school that sent eight recruits to Miami in 2007.

It simply doesn't make sense for Chandler to get dropped like a bad habit six weeks before National Signing Day. "I switched to USF tonight," Chandler told me by phone at around 9 p.m.

Why? "Coach [Jim] Leavitt said they want me real bad," Chandler said. "They got room for me."

Is it a done deal? Are you finished with the Hurricanes? "I don't know. I'm confused," Chandler said. "I'm still thinking about UCF, Colorado State and Louisville. I still have to talk to my dad and uncle about things, see what they think."

But Todd, what went wrong with Miami? "The way they're acting makes me feel like they aren't recruiting me anymore," he said. "It's been so long, I don't remember how their voice sounds. The last time I spoke to [recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt] was during the football season. The last time I talked to coach Shannon was last year."

But didn't I see you at practice a bunch of times this season? Didn't you hang out at UM all the time? "I was going to practice, but the way they made it seem was like they were playing me," Chandler said. "When I spoke to coach [Wesley] McGriff three weeks ago, I asked him what the deal was, why they were looking at other defensive tackles. He said they were just recruiting."

When asked if UM were to call him tomorrow telling him they wanted him, Chandler said he would have to think about things. "We'll have to see what happens," Chandler said. "At first, I was disappointed. But I know I can go anywhere and become a star. My grades and my test are in order. I can qualify where I want to go."

Chandler said he's still considering UCF, Louisville, Colorado State and Louisville. But my guess is we will still hear a lot about the Canes and Chandler over the next few weeks. I just don't want to be a part of it. I had enough with Bryce Brown last year.

For the record, our recruiting writer Larry Blustein is on board with me in believing all of these Chandler reports make for great reading at internet paysites.

"This is a Miami Northwestern program with 25 Division I recruits," Blustein said. "Why would they ever jeopardize their relationship with a program in their backyard like that? It's not like Chandler is an add on. He's one of the best defensive tackles in the country. I'd be shocked if Randy Shannon just really cut him loose because they are upset about him taking other recruiting visits."

CANES OPEN PRACTICE FRIDAY: I'll be in Orlando this weekend for the state championships, but our Susan Miller Degnan will be out there Friday and Saturday and will provide reports at MiamiHerald.com. UM will practice again Tuesday and Wednesday next week before heading to Orlando on Christmas Day. I'll be arriving in Orlando Dec. 26.

I can say that I was shocked. Woulda been really shocked if he went to FSU. Cause not only do they have no Luc and Joyner. But Now USF is getting Miami commits. I hope they mend things. But idk. I would be mad. But If I were him I would want to be at home in Coral Gables. On the sidelines with my brothers next year (Forston,Spence and J.Harris). But they choice is his. I just hope he truly thinks about this. But December til Febuary is a long time from now. We are looking at Dt's with Louis Nix leaving for South Bend..but idk!

I hope he changes his mind

Manny reports are that Chandler has been out of school, is that true?

Todd Chandler is a Miami Hurricane. Period. Done deal. He bleeds green and orange as does ML Harris. They love him, I love him, but the staff is busy.

Coach Shannon is not a touchy, feely guy like Jim Leavitt. Forget Leavitt. Did U see the guy on the sidelines in a few of their games? He's out of control.

Jacory, Sean Spence, AJ, Tommy, etc., need to get over there during Christmas break and settle Todd down. The kid can take any remaining visits, enjoy the experience, but in the end Todd is a Cane. The U is back and we'll have Todd to help anchor that defensive line. Then he can graduate, go to the pros, be a star like all the rest, and help the U keep the tradition alive.

End of discussion.

This is a great story Manny, good work. now can i please get a total recuriuting overview and we can skip the soap opera stuff.how many kids in this class for starters?

Thanks for giving us the inside scoop, Manny. I hope Hurtt and Randy are able to reassure Chandler that he is wanted and that UM has to keep recruiting until signing day. He should also consider that Nix needs to be replaced. I can see his point though, it only makes sense to keep recruiting your verbals since other schools are definitely recruiting them and they can start to feel like those other schools are more interested in them.

Shannon hasn't talked to Chandler since last year?

Does Shannon really want this kid?

This only makes sense if the kid really doesn't want to be apart of the "family." It seems like lots of the kids they are going after now aren't necessarily the "5 stars" but the kids that want to compete for playing time at their positions.

Look at the running backs. From reading all your posts as well as other sites it seems like Clement, Johnson and the other two are ready to "duke it out" with Miller, James and Berry next year. That's what we need on this team. We don't need prima dona's or "me" players.

Now, I don't know the kid but it sounds a lot like he wants the light to shine on him, eerily similar to Louis Nix and from what i've seen, that's not the type of player Randy wants. He want kids that will come in and compete for playing time. If they don't get their job they have to plug away and keep trying until they get their earned PT. Nothing is given at UM anymore, you have to earn it on the field.

Manny thanks for this story. When I first heard this tonight I couldn't believe it. Chandler was one of the most committed guys that we had. Shannon must address this one way or another. This is a potential disaster and the coaches need to step up. I didn't mind losing Greg Dent because I knew he was always sweet on the seminoles and Louis Nix had been playing us from the beginning so I didn't care to lose him but Chandler he is one the best defensive tackles in the nation let alone Dade County. Shannon needs to fix this fast!!!

Can't be true. No way they would let the class fall apart like that. Something weird is going on. Could just be the drama buildup. I am sure things will clear up soon

Manny can you talk to coaches or their not allowed to?

I know we only want guys that want to be CANES but we cannot afford to lose 2 big time DT prospects this late in the recruiting season unless the coaches know something about them we don't know. Especially not one like Chandler who has been strongly committed for so long.

Yea well I gotta believe this one when I see it. I mean if he leaves he leaves you can't get em all but I really doubt they gonna stop recruiting him. I'm with Manny on this one. No Mo watchin and payin sites to see if a kid gonna change his mind.
In other news the U documentary was incredible. Growing up next door to Victor Morris I was right there growing up with those guys always wanting to be a Cane. That documentary solidifies that the U can never be back. We will never assemble talent like that year in year out. I think kids don't understand just because you don't start as a freshman doesn't mean you can't be a first rouder. A strong education and hard work on the field against the best in your state will make you into an elite player. Jerome Brown was behind Cortex Kennedy and Russell Maryland was behind him. They all went in the first round. Look at Chandler he wants to cut out and is confused. It takes a special moment in time to get a bunch of elite talented players to do what the Canes did in the 80's.
The fire those teams played with made me into the player I was and the coach I am today. I am so glad they made that film. Hopefully kids who want to be Canes understand the history of the dynasty. Bringing a community together and tearing down racial walls was a great feat to overcome and I am glad the film captured that. Much success to the Canes for many seasons to come.

PS who invented runnin through the smoke?
who invented swag? I guess the Documentary tells it all.

Nice Navarro make the kid out to be a whack job 6 wks before signing day. It's like your daring him to sign with another school. Will give you your credit for your helping him decide go somewhere else if it happens.

That is why Coaches are not allowed to talk about recruting because U all run with ONE PERSON story and right a Bias report. They are not jeopordizing their relationship with North Western...WTF yall talking about...You all sound like Haters...U just finished watching the U on ESPN huh?

U all must been watching the U on TV. You all sound like haters. Randy knows what he is doing. Here both sides of the story before posting a Bias segment.

Wow, I really hope this isn't another Bryce Brown fiasco. I think Chandler wants to be a Cane, and it's just like you said Manny, his ego is bruised. We all have to remember that these are 17-18 year old kids who are extremely competitive and who have been lauded for their football skills their whole teenage life. When they feel like they're not getting enough love, they get upset because to them it's disrespect. I don't know, I guess I can see both sides of that equation. Still, it's hard for me to believe the Canes would risk alienating a powerhouse program like Northwestern. Just doesn't add up so maybe this is a character issue thing?

First Dent... Then Nix ... And now Chandler ...

POOOOFFFFF go 12 STARS !!!

Lemme guess, they're all afraid to compete huh ?

And it ain't ova ...

This is unbelieveable!!! What is Shannon and his cronies doing!!! You need to follow up with these kids. That's what they are kids and if you let other slick talking adults get in their ear and don't reinforce your message you will lose them. That is the way the recruiting game is played. Pete Carroll does it that way and so does Urban Meyer and they are way more successful than Shannon is. I know all the Shannon apologists will come on here and defend him saying UM only wants guys who are 100 percent for the U and that is all fine and good but most people have trouble with making concrete decisions let alone 17 and 18 year olds and they have all kinds of people from other schools manipulating them. Like I said that is how the game is played and Shannon needs to start playing it. By being stubborn and proud and going his own way all it is going to do is put UM behind in recruiting and eventually cost him his job. All you shannon apologists need to get over yourselves. Randy is not smarter and more clever than all the other coaches. Heck he is not even an elite recruiter like Carroll and Meyer are. He is a good recruiter but not an elite recruiter and that is what you need to be a consistent top 10 team. If he took this attitude and had won a few championships like a Pete Carroll then fine you could live with this nonsense but the man has proved nothing and this shunning of homegrown top recruits is not only stupid but is going to set us back for years. Smarten up Randy and make things right with this kid or else you will not be the coach here for much longer!!!

This is strange . . . very strange. Perhaps, more details will be forthcoming soon. But if Chandler could go "anywhere" why would he be thinking about USF, UCF, Louisville, or Colorado St?

Is it true that he is in trouble at school?

Also, was his on-field performance somewhat less than steller this year?

WHO EXACTLY ARE SHANNON's TOP REMAINING RECRUITS? WHY IS IT THAT SO MANY TOP PLAYERS IN DADE AND BROWARD THIS YEAR DON'T SEEM EAGER TO BE A CANE?

I dont believe it. Not until national sinning day.

Miami need to hold on to there recruits. Once they recruit these kids they don't keep in contact. Miami have to keep in contact weekly to keep these kids, until they sign.

He was born a Cane

This kid sounds like a HEAD CASE...let him go elsewhere...we don't need any head cases, we need those players who want to be a part of "THE U" - period!
If he's that fragile, he's a BIG HEAD CASE.
IF HE WANTS TO BE A CANE, HE'LL SIGN WITH UM, IF NOT, so long!!
GO CANES!

thanks Manny but I recall that Petreson, Brown and Nix were not going to skip and they did, so we'll know the 2010 class when they sign the dotted line, recruiting has now become big entertainment.

stop being a child , thanks Larry Coker for no frist rounder agin this year

If this kid is truly a Cane, he should show Coach Shannon respect and not be taking visits. JMO Go Canes!

Man why are these guy's so softh and sensitive

We gotta get this guy back on board. We need bodies on the d-line so we don't have have a repeat of what happened with injuries this year next season. His offer sheet is a little concerning. USF, UCF, Louisville, Col St. not exactly FBS powers.

Shannon's experience in these things tells me we're handling it correctly. Why visit other places if you've committed?

SOMETIMES OUR BRUISED EGO'S CAN MAKE US MAKE VERY POOR DECISIONS. FIRST OF ALL. MR CHANDLER HAS TO REALIZE HE HAS HAD HIS SHARE OF IN JURIES, WHICH WOULD BE A CONCERN WITH ANY COACH, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE RASH OF IN JURIES THE UM HAD ON DEFENSE. THEY CAN ILL ADVISE TO TAKE ANY ONE WHO MAY BE IN JURED OR INJURY PRONE, NOT SAYING MR. CHANDLER IS. ALSO. MR. CHANDLER MUST REALIZE THEY PROBABLY ALREADY CONSIDER HIM PART OF THE FAMILY AND ARE TRYING TO RECRUIT OTHERS TO HELP HIS FAMILY BECOME THE BEST THEY CAN BECOME. MOST IMPORTANTLY REMEMBER, THEY ARE PRESENTLY TRYING TO CONCENTRATE ON THE UP COMING PLAYOFFS. MR. CHANDLER. PLEASE DON'T BECOME A DISTRACTION. MR. SHANNON IS A CLASS ACT, IF HE DOESN'T WANT YOU ANYMORE I'M MORE THAN SURE. HE WILL DEFINITELY TELL YOU. SO UNTIL THEN. CHILL AND HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU AT THE UM, BUT I HAVE NO DOUBT. WHERE EVER YOU PLAY, BARRING ANY UN FORESEEN IN JURIES. YOU ARE GOING TO BE GREAT IF YOU CONTINUE TO KEEP THE GREAT ATTITUDE YOU'VE HAD AND SHOWN. YOUR TYPE LEADERSHIP WOULD BE A PLUS AT THE UM OR ANY SCHOOL. NOW IN HALE, EXHALE AND THANK GOD FOR YOUR GOD GIVEN TALENT AND PRAY THAT YOU M AKE THE RIGHT DECISION. PROVERBS 3-5-6

I heard from an inside source they have him on the spring board and that everything is still as planned. Gossip is sports ! Its good for the game. Todd will be a Cane !

I don't know Manny they told Bryce Brown to go away. They have also stopped recruiting or not recruited alot of guys that people where clamoring for in South Florida.

Here are some things to thinkg about. I do not know what is going on but something is up. Chandler has USF, UCF, UL, etc... as fall backs but why are the Gators or Noles or TN whatever not involved. Those schools do not care about commitments to other places. Please - Doc Holliday was trolling NW when all those kids where UM locks. Did he ever have an actual offer? Sometimes I think the kids have a list and it basically is a wishlist. Also, After seeing him play his senior year is he really better than some of the guys they are recruiting (Willis, Kid from GA, etc...). Do we have guys on the roster that will be good in the future so that we are looking to address other places of need? Porter and Lewis came on to play real well late this year, Marcus F, J Holmes, Bailey and Regis all can play and Luther Robinson is redshirting so you never know. After going 9-3 with many young guys playing is the future looking so bright that we have now become hot again? Many factors to consider when talking about recruiting.

Randy and the coaches know what they are doing IMO. So let's see how it plays out.

After talking to a bunch of folks connected to Northwestern the past few weeks and who would know the truth......

Chandler committed to Miami before he was ever offered and to this day has not received a Miami offer. Apparently he was never told he would not get one because he still had a senior year to play and needed to be further evaluated. As a Miami NW kid, he would get benefit of the doubt. But I'm sure the concern was the same as my personal concern, he seemed like an undersized Teraz McCray to me.

and

His senior season was pretty average and I think in recent weeks Chandler began to understand he wouldnt be getting a real Miami offer and that his early "commit" would be meaningless.

First off, Chandler is completely lying about his situation right now.. He talks as if he is in contact with the staff and it's totally false.. I found out some more on his situation and the staff gave him his stipulations and IF he met them they would honor his commitment..He was told basically don't get back to them until those are met.. He continues to act like he is excited about other schools but told one of the players he would be devastated if he wasn't allowed to be a cane..They have been checking up on him the last two weeks and he has actually done nothing that the staff has asked him to take care of.. He tried calling the coaches twice last week and no return calls... Needless to say like a few has pointed out he is only causing his own problems...Now he's telling people tenn and north carolina are really after him and he may have BETTER options, lol....Between him and Nix I don't know who is more full of it...

These kids are babies now. His parents should explain to him that the staff is trying to build a team, so if they give him all the time & affection, it will hurt the entire team.

Well, we're hearing one side of the story. Is this a guy who needs his hand held until signing day? Is he looking for the type of love Willie Williams got? If the young man is confused, isn't it better to keep your concerns private before you say something publicly that you might regret? With allegations surrounding Levitt, will he still be there? Gill just came aboard for Louisville, is he someone you've talked with? what will Gill's staff look like in 3 weeks? Go talk with your coach; reach out to Hurtt and Shannon; talk with the 2007 guys. But do it in private. not here on the 'net.

anymore info on the practice friday? time location ? thanks

man what is going on they cant let the home town boyz leave.I thought Chandler was committed, If you were committed they dont need to recuit you because you are already apart of the team(thats just my opinon). If your going to be a cane then you shouldn't have hear from the coach's just report in Jan and be ready to take somebody spot......

Geez I agree with you Manny I hope this guy doesn't become another Bryce Brown. We need players that are excited about the U, all others should walk.

I certainly hope you're right Manny. He seems like a good kid and a quality player, and I hope Randy is playing this one right. Chandler really sounds like the jilted lover in those quotes...he's pissed and lashing out, but really wants the relationship to last.

However, as I've said before, I trust Shannon 100% when it comes to recruiting, so whatever happens happens. The only annoying thing will be having to listen to USF talk about how they "stole" another recruit we'd already given up on.

I hope it's just a media frenzy... Clint and Shannon best not slip! This kid has all the tools: athleticism; aggressiveness; intelligence; Miami Kid (what else do you need)!!

Really! Guys are picking UCF who had a nice year once Notre Dame and FSU who are in chaos and other mid to low level school over tha U ! Does that speak to how far we have fallen are the horrible decisions by these kids

Man, this crap gets old every year. "He don't love me anymore, so I'll go get love here". These 18 year old kids are worse than teenage girls. Wish the NCAA would allow for early signings to put an end to all this crap.

I watched this kid and he plays lazy..w ethink all 300 lb kids from Miami are super stars not correct..I have had it with these kids flopping and not happy because they are not on the cover of espn every minute...if he this touchy about not being wanted what about play time and his shot and waiting his turn...I want true Cane players not posers we have them now on the team..god luck todd..you will need it with that attitude....GO CANES

Who cares? Give us some basketball news! The lack of UM basketball coverage is astounding!

Todd Chandler wouldn't be saying this crap if his team would be playing for a state title

First!!!! Get this recruit back on board coaches... We need all the D-linemen we can get. STATE of MIAMI remember?

I didn't think he was that good anyway. All well.

I knew this would happen, this always happens when someone commits this early, I hope he doesn't expect to start next year, this D-line is pretty deep, we're losing moncur and joseph, and thats about it, he's gonna have to wait a while.but you either want to be a star, or you want to play for the U, and its obvious he wants to be a star.
