Sharpton, Fox share Canes' MVP award

Jason Fox didn't finish out the regular season the way he wanted to. But Fox, a player who made 47 career starts at offensive tackle for the Hurricanes, was still rewarded Sunday night by sharing the Jack Harding Team MVP Award with linebacker Darryl Sharpton.

It was only the fourth time in team history two players shared the award. Fox is only the second offensive lineman to win the award, joining Eric Winston (2005). Sharpton became the first linebacker to win the award since Dan Morgan shared it with Santana Moss in 2000.

It's hard to argue with Fox and Sharpton sharing it, especially after the final month of the season D-Money had for UM.

Other winners

> Scout Team Player of the Year -- Offense: QB Spencer Whipple. Not sure we'll ever see Whipple on the field, but we heard a lot from his teammates about just how valuable he was.

> Scout Team Player of the Year – Defense: DB Cory Nelms. The walk-on from Neptune, NJ definitely earned it with his big hits.

> Hard Hitter Award: LB Darryl Sharpton. Vaughn Telemaque (Duke) and Ray Ray Armstrong (Oklahoma) had a few bone-jarring hits this season. But nobody was more consistent than D-Money. Remember what he did to that Clemson tight end? He does.

> Special Teams Player of Year: K/P Matt Bosher. From Jack Harding MVP to Special Teams Player of the Year. Just doesn't seem right for the Chuck Norris of Canes football.

> Strength Training Athlete of the Year: DE Allen Bailey. If you haven't walked into the weight room or seen the team records board, Bailey has his face all over it. No surprise here.

> Nick Chickillo Most Improved Player: CB Sam Shields and RT Matt Pipho. I'm going to go ahead and respectfully disagree. I would have given this one to Brandon Harris. The kid went from looking like a freshman to All-ACC First Team in a snap.

 > Walt Kichefski Hurricane Award - Commitment, Consistency, Work Ethic: C A.J. Trump. Hard to argue here. Trump had two major injuries and provided a strong season for UM at center. It's too bad we didn't get to see more of him in his time at UM.

> Albert Bentley Most Valuable Walk-On Award: LS Chris Ivory. He won it last year as a freshman.

> U Miami Sports Hall of Fame Unsung Hero Award: FB/TE Tervaris Johnson. Great choice considering how valuable he became after Pat Hill went down.

> Mariutto Family Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence: QB Jake Byrne.

 > Plumer Award for Leadership, Motivation and Spirit: S Randy Phillips. He was the vocal leader of that defense, no doubt.

> Melching Leadership Award: RB Javarris James and DL Joe Joseph.

> Community Service Man of the Year Award: CB Ryan Hill and CB Chavez Grant.

 > Newcomer of the Year Award: RB Mike James. James had a phenomenal freshman season. But I would have made him share the award with tight end Jimmy Graham, who was without question a great addition to the team.

> Training Room Comeback Player of the Year: TE Dedrick Epps and LB Colin McCarthy. No complaints here. Both of those guys made great comebacks from injuries.

> Hurricane Media “Good Guy” Award: QB Jacory Harris and S Randy Phillips. Nobody did more interviews than these guys.

thanks for the info Manny!

Manny, lol @ chuck Norris of UM football.

I'm so upset at his treatment in these awards. It's ok, Bosher for Heisman next year.

Sam Shields is my player of the year...the kid switched from WR to CB and played in the biggest games of the year. He correct on and off-the-field issues and IMO became a man.

Sam Shields represents everything we want our program to be.

I would have added Berry for some award. He had a great (and unspected) season.

Why isnt Allen Bailey the TEAM MVP?

You gotta be kidding me that guy was the most consitent CANE all year long...

Thanks Manny

Go canes, hell of a season this year so far but you guys have to top it off with this last game! Train hard and practice hard and we will end the season right, and setup for next year!

These are certainly nice accomplishments that they can place on a mantel or wall at home; but what about getting something that they can get to wear on a finger? Hmmmm?

Bosher saved a bunch of potential touchdowns for the Canes. He's a LB in a punter's clothing.

When things go well on the field often nobody notices so I can't disagree with any of the choices such as Shields.

Totally agree that Bosher is amazing and is special team MVP. Team MVP though? Probably not. Shows we have improved from last year.

I really like the Wisconsin match-up. They are a Big 11 team which is known for running the ball in classic Midwest fashion. They have the same record as we do and are a top 25 team.

If we can stop the run and get win #10 it will be a great win. Also playing in central Florida will help recruiting.

A USC match-up in the Emerald bowl would have been great, but I don't think many UM fans want to travel out to the Bay area two times in 2 years.

We had some fantastic stories this year. Some good and some not so good.
Damien Berry! Switches positions only to find himself buried down the depth chart at RB. But worked his buns off in the offseason and spring to earn the right for a shot when Baby J, Coop and Mr. Chambers went down. And boy, did he take the bull by the horns!
Poor Eric Moncur. What a season he could have had if only he was healthy. Probably our most effective pass rusher had he had the chance. This would have kept Godzilla at DT.
Sam Shields staying the course, Colin coming back and playing hard again, Cory Nelms waking the sleeping giant with his monster hit, and the overal improved offensive system better adapted to our team's strengths!
Ojomo? All I can say is Dadgummit! A wasted year he could have really used to develop.
Marcus and Micanor stepping in and up, and Brandon Harris solidifying his spot on the Preseason All- Ameriican stage next year.
And of all things, Taylor Cook leaving the U for Rice, of all places, because he can't wait until his junior year of eligibility to start at the U! He had a gun, just not the right stuff for the U. How many kids can only dream about a shot to run the U for 2 years?
A vitual walk-on comes in and makes some of the biggest blocks and catches of the year at tight end. Now Jimmy is hearing talk of a future career on Sunday's! Wow!
Just watching this years team have fun has been worth it for me this year!

Bosher had a gr8 year. Cant think of any other Cane this year who consistently did the unexpected big play like him. Berry deserves an award all to himself for his amazing punt return. This team has so much promise for the next 2 years.

Good stuff Manny. My MVP would have been Colin McCarthy or Bosher. Newcomer of the year Graham, M. James and Ray Ray. Most exciting player T.Collier and D.Berry. Congratulation to the 09 Canes. We still have work to do. Let's finish strong with a 10 win season.

I like the Sharpton pick. Look beyond his football skills, the guy stuck around and finished his degree, something he can use once his football days are over.
That's the mark of a good STUDENT-athlete

JuCo TE Chase Ford committed to the Canes. We need to get on a roll and sign a few more quality guys.

Agreed. He should have been All ACC punter as well, but he got blamed for punt blocks that were blocking errors, not his.

I think you meant Collier, not Berry, on the punt return versus Virginia. Hester-esque.

It is gonna be a great 2010. No more Bowden, no more Gator troll, and more experience accross the board.

ACC title, and likely BCS title unless the refs and pollsters rip us off.

Three days until "The U" on ESPN. That is gonna get great ratings!

THAT is how you build a dynasty, by being tougher than everyone else around you.

Randall Hill will be unleashed in the Cotton Bowl again.....

jimmy graham, jimmy graham jimmy graham!!!! SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR!!
