DT recruit Jeffrey Brown a star wrestler

The final recruiting weekend of the 2010 season has come and gone. So how did it go in Coral Gables? We really won't know until Wednesday. But as expected the University of Miami landed the commitment everyone expected them to from Evanston (Ill.) Township defensive tackle Jeffrey Brown.

Brown pledged his allegiance to the Hurricanes this morning when he met with UM coach Randy Shannon before leaving campus. Of course, it wasn't very hard for Brown to fall in love with the place considering his other offers were from Illinois State, Eastern Michigan and Toledo. Still, Brown became the 27th player to say he'll sign with the University of MIami Wednesday.

So what kind of player are the Canes getting? According to Rivals (2-star), ESPN (3-star) and Scout (75th defensive tackle in country), another under-the-radar recruit. But if you ask his high school coach Mike Burzawa, Brown (6-3, 275) is someone UM defensive coordinator John Lovett fell in love with after seeing on film.

Burzawa, who attended a UM alumni dinner in Chicago with Shannon two years ago, said he called Hurricanes coaches in November and told them about Brown, who had received very little attention from BCS schools until that point.

"The biggest problem for Jeff was he didn't go to a lot of camps, so he wasn't seen by a lot of scouts," Berzawa said. "I think everybody gets caught up on the recruiting service, the four-star, five-star. Some kids develop in their senior year. Jeffrey was a dominating force this season. We had every coach in our conference sending scouts over here. To me, it was surprising nobody was all over him. Michigan called, liked him. We sent tapes to everyone in the Big Ten. They all liked what they saw. But nobody followed through. Everybody has different needs. Miami is doing things this year a little differently. And I know they like what they see in Jeffrey."

Brown is actually a three sport star. On the football field, Berzawa said Brown had 42 solo tackles, five sacks, nine tackles for loss, a forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, two blocked kicks and blocked for a 1,300 yard rusher as a pulling guard. But his talents were not only reserved for the gridiron. As a wrestler, he's compiled a 39-1 record as a senior and is a favorite to win a state title in the heavyweight division. Last year in track, Brown was a state qualifier in the shot put.

"The No. 1 characteristic is he's an outstanding young man," Berzawa said. "He's a leader in our school, a leader in the field. Wrestling has helped him. He wins the leverage war and has some huge hands and can dominate defenders. We played Hubbard High from Chicago and he was the Channel 2 Player of the Week with 12 tackles and a couple fumble recoveries. Against Main South, the 8A state champion, he had one of the most incredible performances we've ever seen."

> I'm at the UM-Virginia Tech basketball game. I'll have more recruiting news for you as we near National Signing Day.

Now if we could close with either Ferguson or Whitaker for the D-Line we will be in business. If we can Get Henderson then everyone will quit whinning about the last 5 players who verballed, that are 2 star players. Please get off the Chandler band wagon, he's too short. Shannon has gotten what he needed from this class, so far but next year we need big time W.R.'s and a pro style Q.B. & most definitly a stud T.E.

I love how fellow canes fans are talking about how good J Brown is going to be b/c he is a "sleeper". NONE of you have even see him play one SNAP!!! He's also probably playing against a bunch of undersized white boys in Illinois.

Then you trash the recruiting services b/c they can't evaluate talent. But what about the other 11 teams in the Big Ten that passed him up in their back yard? I'm sure they can't evaluate talent either. Listen, I really really really hope he is a sleeper and does great things out at the U, but I would put my money he is a two year scout team player with limited snaps after that.

The "U" had 2 of the top 15 recruiting classes of all time in 1984 and 1999. I believe all other schools except either Notre Dame or Alabama only had one. Florida had Tebows class and Florida State had the class with Peter Warick in it. Imagine that a school who has only been a significant football power since the 1980's has two of the top 15 of ALL TIME. There were schools on that list going back to the 1940's and 50's. One last note. Forget about the Virginia linebacker coming to the "U". His grades are too low and if he were to qualify it would be a miracle. More two star recruits. Man I hope Randy and co. know what they are doing. I remember when in 2005 the "U" and LSU led the nation with players on the roster who were 4 and 5 star guys. Obviously our guys did not pan out but LSU's sure did. The question will always remain. Was it a bunch of 4 and 5 star guys who were overrated or was it a question of poor coaching. Cause in that class we cleaned house in QB's, Wide Receivers, Linebackers and D-linemen. What happened? Hope the "U" steal some recruits this year. GOOOO! CANES! WHATS UP EDD

I can see that some of the Shannon groupies are out in full force today. The bottom line is that this isn't about Shannon and it's not about Shalala. This is about the U and ensuring that the people who are in charge are capable and willing to keep us at the top at all costs. I contribute to the university athletic programs so I have the right to speak out on what I feel the direction of the football program should be as do all the proud donors. My questions regarding Shalala are does she really care about football and even if she doesn't will she interfere with the Athletic Director, Coaches and Staff in terms of bringing in players and making the necessary upgrades to some of our facilities. As long as she doesn't interfere in that process then I am fine with her. In terms of Shannon let the man earn his new contract. Why are so many people protecting him and willing to reward him now when his record is mediocre and he has proven to be an extremely poor gameday coach misusing timeouts and demonstrating an overall lack of organization as a whole. The fact is that he needs to close strong here in the next two days of recruiting. He needs to land a Henderson, or a Ferguson, or McCartney to at the very least prove that he can land the best of the best. Beating out Portland State and Illinois State for sleeper prospects isn't going to cut it. I'm sorry he has not proven anything in terms of evaluating and developing players so far to give him the benefit of the doubt. Look at a guy like Daniel Adderley out of South Carolina he was a sleeper prospect Shannon recruited and he turned out to be a bust and please don't mention players recruited by Butch Davis and Jimmy Johnson. They are proven talent evaluators Shannon is not. So until a Cain or Gaines prove that they were true sleepers and make significant contributions Shannon must indeed be questioned as to why he is giving valuable scholarships to these type of players. Bottom line Shannon wins the ACC this year or he's gone end of story. If some of you are so blindly loyal to Shannon that you are not willing to see both sides of the argument regarding him then please if he fails this season kindly follow him out the door as well.

Chad went to Miami Beach High

Time will tell about the recruits. Did any one see the NFL All DecadeTeam? Players named from such illustrious football powers as Louisiana Tech (Willie Roaf), Sonoma State (Larry Allen), Kent State (Josh Cribbs),William and Mary (Darren Sharper), Fresno State (Lorenzo Neal), Syracuse (Dwight Feeney), Texas Southern (Michael Strahan), Akron (Jason Taylor), San Diego State (La'Roi Grover), New Mexico (Brian Urlacher), Oklahoma State (Kevin Williams), and more. They ARE out there and the only way to find them is to trust one's own knowledge, watch the kid's films, and judge on your criteria. Not Scout's, Rivals, or ESPN. Whatever you want to say about Coach Shannon, he does it his way.

When you get projects, you blow the scholly on the best friend of a 5-Star player...for package deals. You sign the coach's son to win favor...but signing kids from Buffalo, Portland, and Toledo

Anddddd let the whining begin from Cane fans who cry about getting a 2 or 3 star rated kid by publications that are generally full of garbage and feed off of absolute speculation in their heads. All of you that completely believe in the star rating system by Rivals or Scout - hey, it's your money that you're wasting so have at it

Go ahead and whine, moan, cry, have your diapers changed and once again babble about firing Randy Shannon & President Shalala. After that, just make sure you get up when your alarm clock rings tomorrow morning to go to your job - WHICH ISN'T ANYTHING TO DO WITH MIAMI HURRICANES FOOTBALL or BEING EMPLOYED BY THE UNIVERSITY TO DO A JOB THAT PERTAINS TO MIAMI HURRICANES FOOTBALL & RECRUITING

All you armchair head coaches & recruiting "gurus" out there. Maybe there's a reason why you aren't on any collegiate staff ANYWHERE - ever think about that? And coaching Optimist Football or being the equipment manager at some high school doesn't count - so don't pull that garbage out

Now, I'm sure I'll be called names or my screen name will be made fun of or whatever all you internet keyboard "tough guys" will put out - honestly, I don't care, b/c the reality is what I just said. You have nothing to do with recruiting, coaching or anything else pertaining to the football team at The U - and yes, they do a better job than you could and if they didn't, you wouldn't be pulling a paycheck from where you are now .... you'd be visiting kids on recruiting trips, you'd be coaching kids out at Greentree, you'd be pushing them in the weight room or the sand pit, you'd be on the sidelines during games next to the bench with a headset on and a dry-erase board in your hands to diagram plays

That's reality - like it or not

3 .. 2 .. 1 .. start whining

to argue your point:

is it really beyond the realm of possibility that someone could be bad at their job? cause you seem to think that just cause theyre employed, theyre good at their job. im sure you have people you work with who are completely inept and you dont understand how they were hired or make more money than you. and to say that: if someone(a couch shmo) was that intelligent about football they'd be on the sidelines, isnt necessarily true either. most coaches are in the game because they have the connections that most everyone else doesnt have because they never played the game in college or the pros. if you try to make it without having played at a college+ level, you'd have to start at a very young age and work your way up the ladder for decades before you made it big.

in other words, the main reason they have jobs is because they played in college and have the upperhand w/ connections. not necessarily because theyre better than anyone else at coaching or know more than anyone else. someone who is dumb but played will probably be hired over someone who knows everything about the game but never played.

for the record: i think we should be patient with randy and im just making a point.

OMG! imagine this potential BEAST OL lineup next year:

LT-seantrel henderson
LG-orlando franklin
C-brandon linder
RG-brandon washington
RT-malcolm bunche(or whoever steps up)

jacory will never be sacked.

what a sad ay. we lose whitt and get a 1 star wanna-bee. great day to be a hurricane fan.

damm. randy is not cutting it.

we will lose out on evry recuit that came this weekend. dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

Smooth i agree 100% with you

awwwwwwwww, smooth is'nt getting the attention he wanted, awwwwwwww. For the last time all of you who insist on saying some of us are obsessed with what rivals or scout says, you are missing the point, what is concerning is that all the other major programs in the nation are not going after any of these kids miami is signing, Jeffrey Whitaker just announced for auburn, hope we got the right Jeffery.Well, nothing left but to hope and pray now, Go Canes!!!!!!!p.s. imyahucleberri:nothing would make me happier than for you to be right, according to the insiders our chances are slim to none of landing the trio you mention, but i hope you are right!

5.71 40 time huh ? Well there's Ur answer as to why NO Big School team offered this Slug.

U'll never see him in pursuit along the line of scrimmage make a stop outside the O. Tackles EVER !!! The back and ball will be to the second level before he ever gets there.

D-Linemen like the old U days? NOT ! All those boyz ran 4.9's- 5.2's ... 5.7 + is Sundial Slow.

Face it... Randy's just getting bodies, because that's all he can get. This class of projects will further expose The Canes lack of depth come 2011-2012 and will ultimatly be Shannon's demise...

*FACT*-There are 2 things needed to win a national championship:

1. great coaches
2. great recruiting classes

Im not sure we have either YET.

hopefully in due time...

#1 People who are the people that give out the 5 stars or 4,3,2,1 stars... It's a matter of when they get into practices at college and how the coaches teach these players... Look at Notre Dame or Some of the Schools that have had top 5 recruiting classes over the past few years... Have they won a national championship? NO!!! You people need to get off Randy Shannon's back. I cover the University of Miami for a Radio Station, and also do local high school sports... Miami in my opinion has a great class.. And wait till signing day when you see 2 more HUGE Players sign with UM... It's all about the "U"

"Not that it's a bad time to be a Miami fan. The Canes and the Noles are two of three programs that are closing fast. Right now, FSU has the No. 9 class in the nation and Miami isn't far behind at No. 12. We'll see if any Signing Day decisions change their positions. "

ESPN

Smooth:

If we don't win the ACC, Randy is out.

That's reality - like it or not

3 .. 2 .. 1 .. start praying.

damn. we lost whitaker. so we're def gonna need ferguson. FSU is gonna have one of the best recruiting classes. they got demar dorsey, lemonier, and jones about to committ. we needa be pulling some moves right now. i hope McKinnie was with seantrel all weekend.

LOCAL RADIOREPORTER, JUST WHEN I THINK THERE CAN'T BE A DUMBER POSTER THAN SMOOTH, YOU COME ALONG, DID YOU JUST SAY THE TEAMS THAT HAVE BEEN WINNING THE NATIONAL TITLE HAVE NOT HAD TOP 5 RECRUITING CLASSES LATELY? YOU SIR ARE AS MENTALLY HANDICAPPED AS HANDI SHANNON, UF,USC,TEXAS,LSU,ALABAMA ETC HAVE ALL BEEN CONSISTENTLY TOP 5 IN RECRUITING, YOU CAN'T BE CIVIL WITH THE SHANNON LOVERS AS I TRIED TO BE, SO WWW.FIRECOACHSHANNON.COM! GREAT JOB LOSING I MAC, AND WHITAKER TODAY HANDI, TERRIBLE COACH ,TERRIBLE RECRUITER ,BUT HE WOULD MAKE A GOOD SOCIAL WORKER!

Really? You need great coaches AND great recruiting classes to win championships? I didn't realize that Larry Coker was all that great.

Canesjunkie - I didn't realize you were Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt or the entire board of trustees. I'm sure you have it on great authority that Randy Shannon will get fired this year if he doesn't win the ACC

Too bad you don't have the coconuts between your legs to be held accountable if it doesn't happen

Anyone can make idiotic statements such as that, that's the beauty of being a keyboard jackhole like so many are on here

And yes, too many of you live/die or hang on the edge of what Rivals/Scout teases or says about a player. Good lord, you're worse than a bunch of old women with their soap operas

I can see that some of the Shannon groupies are out in full force today. The bottom line is that this isn't about Shannon and it's not about Shalala. .

enter in a paragraph or two ...

makes for easier reading

Really? You need great coaches AND great recruiting classes to win championships? I didn't realize that Larry Coker was all that great.

Posted by: footballfreak | February 01, 2010 at 07:42 PM

he was a byproduct of butch davis. its tough to lose when they had 6 future first rounders, and 19 in a 4 year span. also, it wasnt so much that coker was a terrible coach, he was just a terrible evaluator. he got alot of bad character guys and his recruiting classes tanked. he put them in a huge hole because he couldnt recruit the right guys and now shannons trying to clean up the mess. the credit for that championship should go to butch and one of the most talented, if not the most, talented team in college football history. that team had so much talent it was near impossible for them to not win it all. but for most everyone else you need those 2 things.

Smooth..,..sounds to me you'd be the PERFECT candidate to work side by side with Larry Coker, whom I'm sure you defended with every ounce of your being.
What makes you think Rivals, ESPN and the like don';t have a handle on guys they been watching for 5-6, maybe even more years?
I'm not saying they always get it right, but when 5 top BVS schools are fighting over a 4 or 5 star player, I'd say that 5 Head Coaches and their staff's can't be ALL wrong.
On another subject, I'm actually FOR recruiting outside Florida, especially when it comes to the O-Line.
One more episode like the Wisconsin game, with our guys huddled beside a heat lamp?
Yeah, that scene on national TV must have REALLY helped out recruiting.

Smooth, for someone who complains about supposed "internet tough guys" your comment "Too bad you don't have the coconuts between your legs to be held accountable if it doesn't happen" proves EXACTLY what a hypocrite you are.
You are also the one whining.
For those of us who have had 203 30, even 40 years of Cane football in our blood, watching Donna Shalala dismantle our athletic dept is painful.

She is a Clintonian, and would like NOTHING better than to make Miami the Harvard of the South. I guess no one told her about Vanderbilt as yet..

Watch the tape. He dominates. He's fast. He was on my team this year. Strong as an ox, nicest guy you will ever meet. U needs good guys like him. Dont look at the star-rankings. He's a player.
