LB Gaines becomes latest UM commitment

One recruiting weekend down, one to go. The University of Miami hosted its next to last group of weekend visitors. Here are a few tidbits I was able to gather...

As expected, the Canes were able to nail down a commitment from Buffalo (N.Y.) Canisius High linebacker Jimmy Gaines. The former Buffalo recruit apparently had a great time on his visit and told UM coach Randy Shannon Saturday night he was ready to join the family. "He just loved it from the moment he got there," Canisius coach Brandon Harris said. "I think the kid is going to be a really good player for Miami. In three years, you'll find me and say 'Coach, you were right."

Sacramento area tight end Asante Cleveland made a recruiting visit to UM this past weekend and might switch from Washington State to UM. While it looks like St. Thomas Aquinas kicker Michael Palardy is going to stay true to his commitment to Tennessee, UM was able to bring in Sacramento (Calif.) Christian Brothers tight end Asante Cleveland and his parents for a visit. And word is, Cleveland had a great time and is now considering switching from Washington State to Miami. Cleveland (6-5, 230) would be a great get for the Canes considering the need at tight end. Stay tuned for updates this week.

> Gaines might have enjoyed his visit, but he did get a little razzing from his future teammates. According to Davie Western offensive lineman and now fellow UM commitment Jonathan Feliciano, players were deliberately ignoring him until he decided to commit.

"We kept messing with him, telling him 'We don't talk to guys who aren't Canes," Feliciano said. "He's cool. I didn't get a chance to see him [Sunday] before we left. But I heard he decided to become part of the family. That's great news."

Feliciano, who had Wake Forest, Florida State and Tennessee still chasing him up until last month, said he's grown an inch (he's now 6-5) and put on another 10 pounds (He weighs 318) since the start of the season. He said UM coach Randy Shannon told him he's happy he never strayed and is looking forward to him competing for playing time at guard.

A FEW MORE TIDBITS...

> I've been told the Hurricanes are hot after another defensive tackle, current Ole Miss commitment Byron Bennett. Although I haven't been able to confirm it with Bennett or his coach, the 6-3, 265-pound senior at Madison Central High in Mississippi could be making a visit to UM this weekend.

> Miami Springs receiver Willis Wright hasn't heard from Miami coaches in a long time. But his high school coach Alex Pacheco said he received a phone call from UM assistant Wesley McGriff on Friday to see if Wright was still interested in UM.

Wright, who visited FIU this past weekend and has West Virginia as another of his finalists, told me Sunday afternoon he would love to visit UM next weekend. But he still hasn't heard from Canes coaches.

"I'm willing to give them a look," Wright said. "I've taken three visits and can take one next week if they wanted me to."

Pacheco said Wright, who is still awaiting his ACT test scores and should get them this week, took his studies seriously his senior season (he worked with a tutor) and raised his GPA to 2.6. "Willis isn't a dumb kid," Pacheco said. "Is he lazy? Yes, he had been. I know grades could have been an issue with Miami. But he might have what he needs to get in there now."

> There is no reason to hold out hope anymore on Winter Park Lake Howell linebacker Christian Jones giving UM a visit. His coach, Tom Oliver, told me Friday Jones has basically eliminated UM.

"I think he was supposed to go down there and visit and just decided not to," Oliver said. "I know the last thing he wants to do is waste anybody's time. I know Micheal Barrow has made a strong effort to convince him to give Miami a look. But it just doesn't look like its going to work out. He's probably going to give USC a look next week."

This years class might not be "SEXY" with stars
but randy and co. first had to stop the bleeding from the lack of talent and depth from the coker years...now it loos like there building a team the right way from the OL out.
if J12 and the bulls class dont work out at least the kids from this class will have the best OL since 01 in their future... i say clements and storm johnson reap the benefits of this class

I live next door to Christian jones... He sees my um flag every morning he wakes up... I saw him yesterday and he had a noter dame hat on...good ridence.. It's freeking cold up there!!!

fifth years senior all better than leaving junior know what i mean

Fire Shannon? I think we need to fire some of our so called fans. I don't care what rivals and scout thinks about a player, they told us Kirby Freeman, Ryan Moore, Lance Leggett, and Kyle Wright were gonna be star players, and what did we get? Nada. There simply are way too many players across the country for these services to locate and evaluate everyone. Some of these kids we are getting are coming out of areas that these services simply don't pay much attention to, doesn't mean that these kids can't become stars. Have a little faith and stop being a whiny group of so called fans. Real Hurricanes don't cry about stuff like this, we just go out and get the job done.

this past season I attended games that James Louis, Jeff Luc, and Matt Elam all played in. Those recruits were all highly ranked. Those recruits also, playing against good competition, completely dominated. THAT is why they are highly rated guys. BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD! Rating systems aren't perfect, but to write them off as a corporate profit monster is dumber than sniffing battery acid. It also smacks of not getting the job done and looking for an excuse.

Welcome to The U!!!!

Hey folks this is the yeat that Shannon at a minimum should get an ACC championship. If it turns out not to be the case and another dismal year, then I think we can conclude that he is good coach but not a NC caliber coach. After 5 years we should expect more, so I am willing to give him this last year, before I jump on the fire shannon bandwagon, in the meantime I will do everything to support this coach and team.

While star wise it may have been disappointing this year, I think we have a good and strong class coming in.

when you compare the univ of miami fan base to that of texas, alabama, florida, lsu etc its not even close. miami by far has the worst fan base in america. always complaining, living in the past, want to fire a coach, no financial support, no loyalty and the the least knowledgeable. its not what can you do for the program its always what can the program do for me.

Wah wah wah...I want 5-star guys, not these puny toys! I know these guys will stink because even though I've seen them play! Wah. And I don't care that our last 2 classes were top 10...I know Shannon stinks because I don't like the pretty stars next to these kids names. I want my mommy...the sky is falling because I don't get the new toys I want and all my friends have them and I want them but stupid shannon is only getting me what he thinks he needs and I of course I know better then he does because I read Rivals and they said these kids stink and so I know better then shannon and all of his friends. I'll just sit here and suck my thumb and assume that the kid from Buffalo will stink forever because noone saw him play in Buffalo in high school and so he must not be as good and I want to thump my chest in february because rivals likes me and thinks I did well and so I'll feel better because others think I'm great. As a Cane, i've always cared what others think and...wah wah wah...now I want the approval of the couch potatoes at rivals because they tell me they know what to think and so I'll follow them instead of trusting my coaches whose jobs are on the line with these decisions. It's not really about the U...it's about someone telling me in February that they approve of my decisions.

I'll just sit here and throw my fit and judge these kids before they get here because I'm so smart and I believe the used car salesmen at rivals over my own coaches.

Grow up people!

Go Canes!

For those of you worried about how many stars a recruit has many of continue to forget that a recruit may like to go to a certain school, but if another one presents itself where he has a better chance to start right away, where do you think he's going? Duuhhhhhh, he's taking the path of least resistance. We're taking care of our needs, and not just taking bodies.

Let the coaches do what they do.You have to get kids that fit your program. Sure I would like us getting every four and five star kid their is but that just want happen if they don't fit what we are doing. If you are looking for early playing time at reciever, running back, line backer or defensive line Miami is not the place for you. If you want to come in and compete for playing time then you are welcome. These kids do their home work just like the coaches do. They have threir criteria. I/m pretty sure if they really wanted a kid they would go hard for them. The Larry Coker way of recruiting got us in whole sh**t load of trouble going after players ranked high in rivals and the players that top ranked programs were recruiting. Rand'y is from the Jimmy Johnson pedigree and he is taking it back to old school when you see a kid who has talent and some skills and that he is coachable and adapt to learning the Miami way philosophy. I think this team will be better than FLA, FSU, and USC this upcoming season. lane Kiffin is going to run them into the ground, FSU is starting over and FLA has to replace 3 assistants including one hell of Defensive Coordinator in Charlie Strong and there is no way 8 rivals 100 defensive players replace that. 3 or 4 years from now when we are winning no one is going to remember that we had the 12th ranked recruiting class. I couldn't tell how many stars Jerome Brown, Micheal Irvin, and Randy Shannon had b/c it didn't matter b/c they produced on the field and they fit the system that JJ ran.

Reality check. Miami is going to be ranked in the pre-season top 15. The 2-deep is absolutely loaded with skill position talent--Look out for Lamar Miller!! Mel Kiper loves the Canes juniors. This years O-Line class is the best in at least a decade. Oklahoma was recruiting Gaines. Who deserves all the credit?
Randy Shannon.

How many gators? 1

Why are those of you apologizing for the incompetence of UM recruiting. It is clear that UF. Alabama, LSU, FSU, Texas, USC, yeqrly garner the top recruting classes and they are top ranked schools as well (Not yet for FSU, but very soon).
Why did we call AShannon the great recruiter a few years ago? Now people are seeing through his incompetence and not tagging alonmg with a a LOSER!!!!! UM wake up!!!! It is an embarassment and a true SHAME!!!!!
UM is now a 1-2 star TEAM at best.

BocaMan,You are too stupid to be on this
forum.Give you credit for one item, you keep
plodding on!

I feel that if we are going after longshots recruits, then why not take a chance with more local kids. Let's give this class a chance. If we get at least 6 of the recruits to pan out then we as coaches and fans have done a good job. We have address the OL, but really need a DL. Let's see what happens!

As you guys know, Miami has a higher academic standard than the NCAA requires potential recruits to have. This limits us on our talent pool. Why would a 4 or 5 star recruit commit to the Canes if he can't qualify, but he can attend any SEC school because the standards are lower. Until UM falls in line with the NCAA standards we will continue to struggle in recruiting.

That's what I'm talking about

Christian Jones has family history with FSU. It is funny how kiffen pops up at usc and now has guys wanting to go there. He gets top recruits but has never been a winner. It is weird. He definately breaks rules. We cant blame Chrisitan Jones for going to FSU but really did anyone even see him at the UA game? He was irreleveant. Fact is all these so called great kids are scared of competing for a job. If you dont want to compete or cant get the minimum grades, it shows your just not committed to your team and university.

Ultimately, if the CANES win, they will come; the fans, recruits, the media and the money. Lets understand that we are facing the consequences of a dissappointing year. If you have a mediocre year, you get mediocre players. The coaching better get their heads out of their @sses and get on point (that includes Whipple.)

With the way recruiting is going I think the coaches are throwing in the towel as far as big name guys that are left committing here. We are just taking who ever to fill out the class. There are plenty of 2 & 3 star players roaming South Florida to scoop up, than some rejects from up North. Way to go coach you gave the keys to South Florida away to all these other coaches and let them pillage your stomping grounds.

Guys,

I have more of a question than a comment or an opinion. Where do UM football academic standards fall when compared to UF and FSU? I remember coming out of High School I could trip over and meet both state school standards for academic schollys, but UM's (private) the req's were much higher, is this the case for athletic scholarships and admissions for these guys as well?

how is fortsen on your list of best D players? what has he done so far?

Some people on here fail to realize that the reason why UF keeps on recruiting is because they have been bringing in the hardware. We haven't won since 2001.I believe this recruiting class will be solid. But in order for us to get recruits .Its all on this years team on how well do they play.I think we will end the season 12-0 with a national championship. We have the best offense coming in this year and the best secondary Ive seen since 2001.Trust me check the um roster and see how many impact players we have.THE U IS BACK.

Who was the guy wearing the 87 canes jersey on the stage in the Indy Game?

Jaime, you are a idiot. Nobody cares about your pro bowlers. We are talking about college recruiting. By the way all those pro bowlers were 4 and 5 star recruits. Geez...what a idiot.

The star system doesnt matter at all. Look at all the hidden Gem coaches and recruiters that come on here and post. No one has ever heard of Boca Dude and Numberjuanphinsfan, but they obviously are some under the radar genuises. They are sooo smart they can assess a players intelligence, skill, desire, and predict their future just by info on the internet. They can even describe to you what emotion the coaches are feeling, along with gameplans, and identify who is the blame for every imperfection. How ESPN missed these 5 star college football guru genuises is anyones guess. At the end of the day some people should just stick to being fanatical fans and allow the paid professionals to coach, recruit and do their job.

Again, Rivals, CFN/Scout and ESPN all say Miami has a top-20 recruit class. Considering that the U can't really compete with the jock schools (whose coaches panic during national championship games and send their defenses head-hunting for opponents' star offensive players), I think the top 20 ain't bad.

The percentile graduation rate of the U's football program is equal to the Naval Academy's.

The U is a school. At one time it might've been a football mill masquerading as a school, but now it's really a school, and as long as Shalala is the chief, that's how it'll stay: right or wrong, like it or not.

Shannon is doing an excellent job as a school's head football coach.

Boca man and Juan Phish whatev.:

Dudes, relax. Think about it for a second. Why is UM's class ranked 12? because this time, we needed OLs and DLs the non-skilled players with less stars. And RS and the coaches did an excellent job getting those players.

Which wide receiver had a monster game for New orleans? Answer- Pierre garcon. Where did he play? Mount Union. Mount Union people! Not Ohio State, Not USC, Not Texas, Not UM. Do you think he had 5 stars coming out of hs?

Bottom line is, UM's acceptance standards are way different than say FSU's. regardless, who was ranked higher at the end of the year? How could that be, given that UM's roster was so young? How could that be given that FSU had as good recruiting as Miami's the last 5 years?

relax. The sky isnt falling. randy is meticulously buildingthe foundation for a complete program. After Eric Winston left, Our only real OLineman left was Jason Fox. For thelast 5 yrs its been a patch work line.

The U will be back.

riddle me this canes fans, what good is having 5 star receivers running backs quarterbacks and tight ends, if the offensive line is horrible, no this class is far from sexy but the point all of you cane and shannon haters out there are missing is stars don't matter on offense if you can't protect the stars with the ball. As for his lack of recruiting in s fla. (so called) every program in fu**ing america is recruiting south florida, this isn't 1985 when jimmy could roll down the streets from miami to tampa and just tell every baller he sees come to miami nobody else wants you...a little perspective people that's all we ask

I dont know why everybody is complaining. Shannon & staff evaluate film, they ask questions about character, they look at transcripts. They're doing their job. they're not recruiting kids that don't know what they're doing. They're not going after kids that have issues off the field for whatever they may be. Discipline and hard work goes a long way.

Antrel Rolle just made the Pro-Bowl roster, so that's 10 former CANES...

OK so the "U" got a commit from a guy who had Buffalo on his wish list? Hell I'd be happy if it was the Buffalo Bills but Buffalo realy? Now they are trying to get a commit from a TE who might go to Washington State? Washington State has not been good since Coach Erickson left there. And the LB we realy wanted from right here in the State of Florida is not comming and is going to USC instead? I have been trying not to panic of this whole recruiting thing but how many of our recruits turned down schools like Buffalo and Washington State to come here? I don't know but commits de-commiting and a class full of 2 and 3 star players can't be good. Is it time to panic yet? I guess 9-4 won't be too bad after all. GOOO! CANES!?

Jaime, i have a bridge in Tahiti for slae. Man, Randy sure has the wool pulled over your eyes. IT ALL STARTS WITH TALENT.

Canadian Cane Fan,

The guy wearing the 87 Canes jersey was A.J. Foyt IV, race car driver and grandson of A.J. Foyt. A.J. IV is married to Colts owner Jim Irsay's daughter.

HogTown Gator Troll,

Why don't you worry about your UFelons and there upcoming season WITHOUT TEBLOW,DUNLAP,SPIKES,RILEY,HADEN ETC??? I would be very concerned son, sounds like a rebuilding year and Bama is gonna kick your a*s again!!!!

5 will always be greater than 3

All that glitters is not gold.

You guys are messed up- yea look at Boise and TCU and Cincy do they have 4-5 star recruits? NO THEY DONT - AND DO THEY HAVE ANY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS? Its sad when we are ok with being Boise-TCU and Cincy. Our facilities are terrible- if you were a recruit and visited the swamp then visited landshark/dolphin stadium where do you think you would have more fun? Ex players need to stop talking smack about how the U once was and help fund a stadium (new orange bowl). Winning is everything- 3-4 losses on a season in not acceptable. Facilities and Recruiting will bring us back to the top.

OK HERE’S MY ATTEMPT TO ARGUE/COMMENT WITH NEARLY EVERY POST ON HERE(SINCE THE OPEN FORUM IS ALL BUT DESTROYED):

These kids are just what Miami needs....CANES!! If they don't want to be here then go somewhere else. These kids will give their all for the "U". That's what they want and that's what the "U" needs!!!
Posted by: PUNA | January 24, 2010 at 05:16 PM

This is a dumb post. A lot of kids don’t have Miami as their favorite college team growing up. The purpose of RECRUITING is to convince them why The U should be their new favorite. By enrolling in the school, they’ll develop a sense of pride and BECOME canes regardless of who they liked growing up. You don’t have to be a cane from birth to be a true cane player. Otherwise a guy like Christian jones would never play for us, and jakhari gore would. We’re getting neither.

LET'S SHOW SOME SUPPORT FOR OUR TEAM THIS YEAR! Shannon needs to get some ba##$ and call out all the fans that dont show up to games! A good crowd can help a team as much as a 5 star recruit! Iknow some of you live too far away(I drive 4 hours each way and went to 10 games last year)but the population of S. Fl. should have that place over flowing! Last year was disgracful!
Posted by: sidcane | January 24, 2010 at 05:45 PM

Great post. Last years attendance was sorry. The city of Miami needs to start attending games. The administration needs to lower the cost of tickets too. $100 for a lower level ticket!? They must be crazy to think that people are going to (be able/want) to pay for that. (considering the extra drive out to landshark, the lower income families, and the lack of recent success)

AS FOR RECRUITING THE TOP PLAYERS- After crunching the numbers on stars and recruiting: 4plus star caliber players have a 37% chance of panning out whereas 3below star caliber players have a 15% chance of panning out. Now, im not a gambling man but I would much rather take my chances on a 4 star or above rather than a 3 star or below. What most of you fail to realize is that most of the player evaluators for ESPN are experts in the field a lot of whom played CF, have studied and been around the game for years, or coached in the game. theyre not retarded. They go to games if they can. They study film. They take into account their measureables. They look at their scholarship accumulations(AKA SEEING WHAT THE PROFESSIONAL COACHES THINK ABOUT THE PLAYER- [for those who say they don’t know more than the coaches: a lot of their ratings are based on how those same PROFESSIONALS feel]). They make the best assessment possible for projecting the players success. So considering that only 1/25 players go pro, I’d say that 37% is pretty good for not knowing how the kids will transition mentally to the next level. And the recruiting sites get more accurate over time.

OK , so since the star system is largely based on who is recruiting players, the assumption by all these "randy shannon" fans is, 1 he is smarter than every coach at all the major colleges who have spent the last year recruiting so fla RANDY"S BACKYARD,,2 All these UM did this in the 80's crap, is completely innacurate, first of all back then when UM made its run to the top, so fla had not yet been unearthed as the TOP place for football talent in the country, and more importantly all the 2 and 3 star kids recruited by Jimmy Johnson, were usually players he switched positions, TE to DE,Russel Maryland, a big DB he switched to LB, etc, his strategy was NOT to simply recruit 2 and 3 star DT's and LB's, and hope they were underrated, besides it is assinine to compare SHANNON to the best talent evaluator ever in football, 3 NO ONE IS ASKING FOR THE 80's TO COME BACK, ALL WE WANT IS TO GO BACK TO THE EARLY 2000's LEVEL UNDER BUTCH, who was recruiting the top rated kids in the country.Anyways there are UM fans and Randy Shannon , affirmative action fans, I CHOOSE UM OVER SHANNON, p.s. I am speechless that we managed to get GAINES AWAY FROM BUFFALO ST, AND WOW< WE MAY GET A 2 star TE TO DECOMMIT TO US FROM WASH ST, THEY DID'NT WIN 1 GAME IN 2008, won what 3? last year? LOLLLLLLLLLLLL. HEY WHAT DOES EVERY SUCCESFUL COACH IN THE COUNTRY KNOW< IF RANDY SAYS GAINES IS BETTER THAN CHRISTIAN JONES IT MUST BE SO !!!!!!!!!ALL PRAISE THE CLUELESS ONE!ALL HAIL RANDY!!!!! GTFO!!!!!! WWW.FIRECOACHSHANNON.COM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a decent post til your obnoxious rant at the end.

Also can we stop talking about boise Utah and tcu. Those are complete anomalies because they have coaches who are good at developing talent and got lucky with some low level recruits. None of those teams have anyone draft worthy either. (with the exception of hughes, moore, and Wilson). I guarantee they all suck in 5-10 years because they cant recruit.

It took Schnells 5 years and he didn't have any 4/5 star recruits. Randy has only had three and he's made big progress from the empty roster left by Coker (who only followed Rivals and ESPN rankings). Most of the kids we're losing are dumb *sses who can't get the scores and won't go to class - not the type of kids we want or need. The U is never going to get down in the gutter with FSU, LSU, etc so stop whining about it.
Posted by: emgee | January 25, 2010 at 06:24 AM

Are you serious!? How would you have any idea the star caliber of players back in the early 1980’s!? first of all, no ratings would have been published or accessible back then. No one owned a computer. There weren’t recruiting sites. And schnellenberger recruited the local talent on the premise that they could all play together and win. He locked down the State of Miami BEFORE it was even known as a hotbed for CF talent. Coaches didn’t even dare to recruit down there like howard. All those players back then were absolute studs. That’s why the 80’s teams were some of the greatest ever. It would be the equivalent of Miami today getting the 2010 UF, FSU, and UM classes combined. If rankings existed back then, those classes would be overflowing with 4 and 5 star recruits.

Hey folks this is the year that Shannon at a minimum should get an ACC championship.

Yea but you’d think the local kids would have more pride and loyalty in their hometown team then they seem to show. For some reason the local kids don’t want to play together as a family for The U anymore.

Just for your info guys coop had a 3 star the first time rivals rated him. Next year they gave him 5. He went to prep school and came in 2007

Hogtown gator-

Youjust called me an idiot. Funny, Manny, thought you were going to keep this blog clean.

Guess I have to 'follow" the conversation eh?

Well, Mr Pig Town gator. Go back to your Hogs. They are calling for you. Theyre getting lonely. One of them is called Timmy.

If I wanted tomake the point to recruits that yougo to the U, you WILL have a better chance to play in the NFL, that is MY pregrogative, Loosah, so shut it down.

Recruits- Minnesota vs NOrl game.

Lets compare a gator vs a Hurricane.

Percy Harvin- 5 catches 38 yds, one lost fumble.
Jon Vilma- One recovered fumble, one int.

No need to worry-

Go to NFL-U. Despite the so-called poor facilities, bad stadium and all, it is and always will be,

NFL-U, not

Cow-pasture-U (youknow the one off of I-10 in the hilly part of Florida)

elie- youre right about bringing inhardware to attract recruits, but 2001 is not far from 2008. Or, 2002 (in my view) is not far from 2008. Look at the gators. Sandwiched between the 2 NCS they had a 9-4 season. My point is (not to argue yours) is that despite the haters say, UM's NC wasnt that long ago...yet. We are getting there. Slower than i would want but getting there nonetheless.

all of this hateful talk by Hog Town p--sy and others is jealousy unmasked.

jealus about the 9 Um probowlers. Jealous about the vurent canes in playoffs (note that Lito Sheppard and Percy Harvin were both on the losing ends. Jealous because while UM is loading up, U_F is falling apart despite the ESPN hype (dont forget that ESPN and the SEC have a contract so it benefits them to hype up UF). gators always try to talk up brantley. LOL. He is clumsy as he is tall. I've sen him play. Nope. Not a Tebow. Good luck getting Brantley torun like Tebow. Good luck getting Urban the Liar to go away from his goony goo-ggo gimmicky spread-option!

Gosh, I hope everyone that says that stars or rankings don't mean anything are right. Either everyone in the country is right, or we're wrong. I don't like our chances.

Gaines was all over the field as a senior registering 154 tackles, three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. On offense, he caught 15 passes for 270 yards (18 average) and two touchdowns.

BEAST

.... Beast in Buffalo NY is not BEAST in DADE .... Gimme a Break

"Open letter to Jacory Harris:
Young man, your coach defends you when you pull these antics and come to press conferences faking injuries. This is an outrageous breach of the ethics you agreed to when you accepted your athletic scholarship with the University of Miami."

- this is the stupidist post I've ever read. What the hell is a matter with you? The 19 year old kid played a harmless prank, that's not even much of prank. That you would write this "open letter" to jacory shows you're a loser who needs to get a life and stop harrassing kids who don't owe you c r a p.
