Canes not making any predictions this year

How do you measure success at the University of Miami? Ask any Canes fan and they'll tell you simply, a national championship.

Asked the same question at Thursday's Media Day, quarterback Jacory Harris and coach Randy Shannon didn't lock themselves into any bold predictions. Success for the Canes in 2010? That's just being a better football team.

"Somebody said this the other day, 'You could win nine games in this conference and people will say, we'll that's not good enough.' But you could win the conference with nine wins. You could also not win this conference and go to a BCS bowl game [by winning more games].

"So you have to define improvement based on what you did last year as a team and what you accomplished [this year]. I can't tell you nine, 10, 11 [wins]. You can't classify what it takes to be successful. You just have to go out there and play, improve on the things you did last year.

"[For instance] we played Clemson. We have to improve in an overtime situation. We played North Carolina. We have to either come up with either a third down conversation or get a stop on defense to give us a chance to win. Then, its how are we're going to handle success? Like last year when we won [two] in a row and lost at Virginia Tech."

While Harris said he feels like the team is "on the verge of something special," he's not not putting a number on wins or a bowl game in defining this season's success. "You guys make the predictions," Harris said. "That's what you guys get paid to do."

So what do you think? What do you think would satisfy you as a successful Canes season? Is it winning an ACC title? Is it going to a BCS Bowl Game? Or, is it simply a National Title? Give me your answers below.

> There's obviously a lot more to share from today's media day. Below, I've included six video interviews from this afternoon with Adewale Ojomo, Colin McCarthy, Ryan Hill, Randy Shannon, Jacory Harris and Graig Cooper.

> On our UM audio page, there are also about 10 interviews available for you to listen to. Among them: Shannon and Harris' complete press conferences; center Tyler Horn; right tackle Joel Figueroa and tight end Chase Ford.

At least ACC Championship, which of course means BCS bowl.

This year an ACC title and a BCS bowl win will satisfy the masses!

Manny - come on man...I love my Canes as much as anybody but I'm a realist too. A National 'Ship this year? Man, we're not there yet. We struggled with some teams we should have wasted last year and have some obvious holes still. If we stay healthy, I like our conference schedule at home (FSU, UNC & VT), even if our road schedule with OOC is a ball buster. Let's win us an ACC 'ship first and get in a BCS bowl again...been to darn long. Get that done and EVERYONE would consider it a great year and be jazzed about 2011. It would also keep old Mo for Randy on the recruiting front. Everyone wants to play for a winner.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. NO EXCUSES. NO MORE SETTLING FOR MEDIOCRE.

First things first, I'm just hoping for a win in Columbus. I'm guessing the Canes will be about a 6-point underdog and there won't be many people giving them a legit chance to win, especially after they pretty much manhandled by Wisconsin. The OSU game will come down to how well they handle Terrell Pryor. Running QBs seem to kill the Canes.

uno..ACC Championship or BUST...F-this no more excuses...WE HAVE THE TALENT, LETS JUST DO THIS SHI* ALREADY, RIGHT CANENATION??

No bad loses like va tech game, no giving up huge offensive numbers to other offense's.

A team does not have to win every game but needs to be tough and aggressive, on both sides of the ball. If the U loses playing like that its a tough loss but, respectible.

Uno?
NO MORE EXCUSES..WE HAVE THE TALENT, AND WE NEED TO WIN THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP....

Stay healthy and win the ACC and whatever bcs bowl game winning the ACC gets the Canes. Get more recruits, develop some OL big uglies, add depth, add experience, and the run for the NC starts next year.

I WILL ACCEPT JUST A GREAT EFFORT FROM A GREAT TEAM, BUT TO BE HONEST. I REALLY EXPECT THE UM TO WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE THIS YEAR. I HONESTLY FEEL THEY ARE JUST THAT GOOD. JEREMIAH 32:27 PROVERBS 18:21

Beating Ohio State.... Beating them to the point that someone calls child protective services. That would be a perfect season to me.

To those who say that we should aim for an ACC Championship and not worry about a Nat'l Championship, I say that is the wrong idea.

"Shoot for the stars, but if you miss, you will still land among the heavens."

Coach Shannon has them thinking right!

Go Coach Shannon!
Go UM!

Beat Ohio State like a rented mule! Don't leave any reason for a Terry Porter type call. Both my kids go to Ohio State and I want to run for my life when I leave the game... laughing all the way.
GO 'CANES!!!

National Champs ? Sporting News has us at #4. We have the best talent in the country no doubt. A solid core of backs, receivers and linemen, We have speed, experience, great coaches and we are hungry. We need the toughness and the grit and we need to close out a game. The Canes can strike and win each game like its a title game and they can win it all. Lets finish off the Buckeyes and set it straight in their front porch.

If the Canes win the ACC title game and proceed to a BCS bowl game, it would speak volumes about where Shannon has taken this program over the last 4 years. I agree that this would also allow Shannon to continue recruiting the type of national championship talent that the U has had in the past.

I've been watching college football for over 20 years, and to say the Canes can't make it to the national title game is not impossible. If they have one loss (probably at OSU) and run the table in the ACC and win the ACC Championship, they will be in the mix.

That schedule is very difficult though. I compare this team to the 1999-2000 team that lost at Washington early on. They need a defining win like a Dorsey-to-Shockey over FSU win. That team gained so much confidence after that win, and the U was officially back.

Watch out, if they win at Ohio State, they will win at Pittsburgh and be 3-0 heading to Clemson. Clemson is a scary game though.

Realistically I have them going 11-2 winning the ACC. Losses at Ohio State and at Clemson.

Win ACC Coastal Division, Win ACC Championship Game, Go to BCS bowl game. No Excuses. I think the "U" will lose a tough one at Ohio State but win a tough one the following week against Pitt. Then I see one more tough loss against an ACC foe down the road. Maybe another road loss against a team like G-Tech. But I think it may be at home against either NC, FSU or VT. It just seems that our ACC schedule is tougher at home this year than on the road. One ACC loss and a 10-2 overall record should be plenty good enough to go to the ACC Championship game. GOOOO! CANES!
