Extra points and observations: FAMU

Now that the Canes completed their warm-up for Ohio State with a 45-0 blowout Thursday, a few post-game observations:

Most important development...
> Quarterback Jacory Harris showed no ill effects from last year's thumb injury.
Playing in a game for the first time since undergoing off-season surgery, Harris looked sharp. He connected on 12-of-15 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns in one half of action. No, the Rattles defense will not come close to what he'll see next week in Columbus. But his rhythm and timing were on the money, especially with Leonard Hankerson and Aldarius Johnson. With his 3 TD passes, by the way, Harris moved into eighth place all-time on UM’s list for career TD passes (39) ahead of Kyle Wright. His next TD pass will tie Bernie Kosar.

What else to like...
Sacks> The pass rush. Olivier Vernon had a career-high 3.5 sacks and the team had eight total (the most since Sept. 29, 2007). Five different players got in on the pressure. Last year, the Canes had a combined nine sacks in their final six games. After the game I asked Vernon the reason for the improvements. His answer: "Coach Petri."
> Lamar Miller's debut. We heard plenty during camp about how good Miller looked. He showed the kind of burst and explosion in the open field this team hasn't had enough of in the backfield, rushing for a game-high 65 yards and a TD on 11 carries. On special teams, he had a nice 34 yard kickoff return to start the game and then exploded on a punt return (it was called back by penalty). After Damien Berry, he's the second best back on this team in my mind.
> Leonard Hankerson looks even better than last year... He finished with a game-high six catches for 115 yards and two TDs without even playing in the second half. His emergence as the true No. 1 target for Harris is important. I know coaches like to spread the ball around and all. But just like the quarterback and running back positions, I feel there has to be a primary receiver in every offense, somebody the defense has to track every week. Hankerson is clearly that guy again.
> Ray-Ray Armstrong’s 22-yard INT return for a TD... The kid was the top prospect in the 2009 signing class and to see him start and make a huge play on opening night is a very encouraging sign. Wish I could say the same for Vaughn Telemaque. The Canes need him to get going too.

What troubled me some...
> The missed tackles. Not going to harp on this too long, but if you were watching on ESPN3 or at the stadium you saw that FAMU's second drive exposed some bad tackling. UM rebounded later in the game and still put up its first shutout in a couple years. But if they had those ugly moments Thursday against Rattlers QB Martin Ukpai, imagine what Buckeyes QB Terrell Pryor could do. He has  to be licking his chops some.
The slow start at tight end. UM quarterbacks completed 19 passes, but not one went to a tight end. Chase Ford had a chance at a big play inside the FAMU 10-yard line in the first quarter, but dropped the ball. I never saw Richard Gordon do anything more than block (not surprising). I also hoped to freshman Asante Cleveland. The Canes didn't really need a tight end Thursday. But they will down the road.
> Right tackle remains a question mark. OK, it was only the first game and a lot can change in a week, but I'm still kind of worried about the right tackle position. Sophomore Ben Jones got the start ahead of senior Joel Figueroa. Jermaine Johnson didn't even dress. It would have been great to see Johnson, who needs to play, work out his kinks this week before going to Ohio State. And I'm not convinced Figueroa is fully healthy. If he was, he would have started.

Remember that it happened...
> The big guy saw his first action.
Seantrel Henderson got in during the third quarter for a total 14 plays according to Randy Shannon. In all, UM said 16 players made their debuts: TE Chase Ford, S Kacy Rodgers, LB James Gaines, QB Spencer Whipple, RB Eduardo Clements, FB Maurice Hagens, WR Allen Hurns, TE Asante Cleveland, DL Luther Robinson, LB Kelvin Cain, TE Billy Sanders, DL Dyron Dye, LB Shayon Greene and OL Jared Wheeler. I could have sworn OL Brandon Linder did too.
Not all the newcomers played. RB Storm Johnson, QB Stephen Morris, DE David Perry and DB Latwan Anderson didn’t dress. Johnson was the only real surprise. We'll never get a straight answer as to why some guys dressed and others didn't. Johnson had a great camp. But he could be on his way towards a redshirt like the majority of the new guys. If there was a surprise for me it was how much Clements played. Because of his play on special teams, he might actually now be ahead of Johnson on the running back depth chart.
> First starts. Cornerback Brandon McGee, right tackle Ben Jones and center Tyler Horn all made their first career starts. The ‘Canes started out in the nickel package on defense, thus the reason McGee was starting. Jones, though, was the surprise ahead of senior Figueroa.

I dont like the fact the Storm Johnson didnt even dress for the game... Something is wrong here. Hopefully im wrong...

Great Video Clips of the boys! Okay....now the real show starts. Let go up to Columbus and remind them of WHO the MIAMI HURRICANES are!

WHOOOSH WHOOOSH....

WTF, Winning Friends? Whatever.

OSU is the real deal for sure, but Pitt looked mighty shaky, Clemson I'm not sure I'm drinking the cool-aid yet, and FSU will be FSU. Can't remember the last time I was this stoked about a season's potential.

Go Canes!

Linder recovered a fumble. He's a looks legit 6'5" and really well conditioned for a freshman with an extra spring under his belt only. The linemen better bring their A game next week.

Linder did play. He recovered when Miami fumbled.

Manny, or Susan, find out about Storm. I am wondering what gives.

Storm is redshirting. There's nothing else to talk about

Manny, I agree that the fact that the FAMU QB got loose a couple times is a little disconcerting. The Canes have always had issues w/running QBs, all the way back to Donovan McNabb and before. Hope they clean thta up, although I'm not sure what they can do in a week. All in all though, a good opener. Go Canes.

Good stuff. I saw that B. Washington and M. Forston played the whole game. B. Jones also played most if not all the game too. Guess they needed the work. The O-line did play well overall as a unit but I too am concerned about the right tackle position. I also observed that early in the first quarter D-tackle Lewis was walking towards the locker room in crushes. He did not return. Whipple did look better than Highsmith at the QB position. Also thought that the RB James looked pretty good running the football. There is a reason why he started as a true freshman at FB last year. Lastly, I was very surprised that D-tackle Porter was not even dressed for the game. I know he was 3rd in the depth chart but he was not listed in the injury report. I thought he played well last year and in the spring games this year. GOOO! CANES!

We have had our issues in the past with running QB's but we've seen so many of them recently that I think we've gotten better. It's true we had some missed tackles and I can't help but wonder what would have happened had it been Pryor, but at the same time we handled BJ Daniels last year @ S. Fla.

If the D-line gets that big a push next week and keeps the pocket contained they can miss a few tackles and the linebackers will chase him down. I don't care how good Pryor is...Spence can catch him. But if the D-line goes so hard they lose contain it could be a long day. All we can do is wait and see, but the FAMU QB only got loose a handful of times so hopefully we're in good shape.

By the way, I loved it when he sat down on the running play with Spence and K. Robinson bearing down on him. I wonder if Pryor was watching that one.

Go Canes!

I can't wait for next Sat. Flying up to Columbus Friday and will be at the party at BW3. A good place to tailgate the day of game is Varsity Club on Lane Ave just a few blocks West of BW3. I went to school at OSU for 8 yrs and have been to plenty of games there. It is rather intimidating playing in front of >100k fans. I enjoy watching OSU lose as so many of my friends still give me crap about the Fiesta Bowl. However, I have not seen a team that has been more opportunistic in the last decade than the Buckeyes. They always seem to get a turnover or a lucky call that changes the game and they run with it while the other team crumbles. I can't stop thinking about the OSU/Wisc game last year when Wisc significantly outgained them but threw 2 pick-6's. I think that we just need to play smart and take care of the ball. If we do not lose the turnover battle and J12 can get rid of the ball quickly enough then everything will take care of itself. I don't see many long, sustained drives by OSU against our D. We just can't give up any big plays that could lead to us hanging our heads. I fully expect to win the game, just don't make it any easier for the 'Luckeyes.

The tackling was a little bit of an issue but hopefully that will be worked on this week. Kind of hard to tell how the running game is going to be against a good defense like ohio state. Was a big fan to kickoffs going very close and even deep into the endzone. Overall great effort.

Even better news about the commitment of Keith Brown!

In addition to the first timers on the list released by UM, Cornileus and Cory White are listed in the participation report. The stuff put out by the Miami SID is really crappy, low quality material. It amazes me that the reporters and the recruiting sites simply regurgitate this information without doing some fact checking.

@jra

Curtis Porter was listed on the injury report. He's been banged up since the later half of camp.

Every team has problems with a dual threat qb. Some of u guys are a trip. It's concerning that Storm did not dress??? Why? Berry... James... Coop... Miller... Some ppl THINK they no more than the coaches & players. Enjoy the win fans. That's all that u need to do & stop trying to be more than what u are. A spectator!

I'm concerned about Storm Johnson not dressing because it sounds like he's earned the right to play.

I love Craig Cooper, but is he really a better option than the development of Johnson? Cooper is hurt and it will be some time before he fully recovers. There's enough film on him to get into the league.

This game will be won or lost by our defense...remember the 2006 BCS title game, Ohio State’s massive offensive line had no answers for Florida’s mobile, aggressive defensive front. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith was pressured into the worst game of his career. If we keep Pryor in the pocket, make him beat us with his arm...Miami wins handily. This games lies squarely in the hands of our defensive coordinator. Real simple, contain Pryor, if Pryor runs for a hundred yards i am predicting a Buckeye victory. Go Canes!!!

I agree just enjoy the win. Miami over OSU 45-17

Randy playin mind games with osu He didnt want any tape of storm before osu game. Think he'll play this weekend and have a big game

eduardo plays? storm doesnt? i dont get it but whatever. good win.

there is one thing that concerns me though... did it seem to anyone else that no one was even trying hard in that game(neither FAMU or UM)? it seemed like FAMU knew they lost even before it began. we were a little sloppy here and there too with missed tackles because of overpursuing and offsides penalties. i swear our practices are more intense. if anyone watched the USC/hawaii game afterward you would've noticed a huge difference in intensity. good win im just saying i cant really guage how good this team is until we get revenge on 9/11.

LET'S FACE IT PRYOR IS PROBABLY THE BEST QUARTER BACK WE ARE GOING TO FACE, MAYBE EVEN THE BEST TEAM. OUR MEN WILL BE UP FOR THE TEST OR TASK. I THINK STORM WILL BE A SECRET WEAPON. THAT'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT COACH SHANON. HE PLAYS MIND GAMES WHILE MAINTAINING A COOL. CALM AND COLLECTIVE DEMEANOR. YES THIS MAN WALKS SOFTLY, BUT CARRIES A BIG STICK. ONE HIS PLAYERS KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO. SEAN SPENCE, BROTHER I'M LOOKING FOR A BIG GAME OUT OF YOU. NO. I'M NOT CALLING YOU OUT. I JUST FEEL THIS. YOU'RE A GREAT PLAYER WITH AN UNCANNY ABILITY TO NO WHERE THE PLAY IS HEADED AND WITH THIS TYPE OF QUARTER BACK. YOU WILL PROVE TO BE A GREAT CONTAINMENT PLAYER. JEREMIAH 29:11

Hey did Wieclaw kick off at all? Some said he did I am unsure though??

Hey 9mm.....you been sniffing your grandma undies again...

You have to love a post by someone calling himself 9MM. He or she then goes on pointing out past legal issues. Have to laugh. Anyone using name 9MM and trying to point out legal issues might as well be called squirt-gun instead hahaha

Couple possible scenarios regarding Storm.

1. Maybe he and Coach talked and it went like this. Storm, you've played well in practice and scrimmage, but you're still my number 3 or 4 on the depth chart. You can play sparingly this year, and waste a year of your eligibility, or you can redshirt this year and come back next year and compete for the number 1 without wasting a year of eligibility.

2. Storm, you're sitting out FAMU cause we don't want to put you on show for OSU to gameplan for. You'll get your baptism in Columbus. Rest up and be ready stud.

3. Storm, you're sitting out this game because I don't like it that you told some of the guys that you're NOT redshirting. You don't set rules here; it's my way or the highway. Got it?

4. Storm, you missed class and for that you're not dressing for FAMU. Academics is job one!

5. Coach, I tweaked my ???? in that last practice. I don't think I can go for FAMU. I think I need to rest up before OSU.

Gotta be one of these five. Question is, which one?

Oh please stop with the conspiracy theories of Storm. If he was ready to be ahead of Berry, James, Miller, Coop then he would have played. If he was ready to contribute OS ST then he would have been ahead of Clement. Simple enough??? Not all true freshmen is ready or able to beat out experienced players.

9 mm must be sniffing his grandmas dirty panties again. It's not good for you to hang out in the laundry room all day rummaging thru the hamper kid.

Every team has problems with quarterbacks that can not only pass, but also have that added dimension of good to great speed. Sometimes a team will have a good day against them, but more often than not, a mobile quarterback will give defenses fits. Jacory would hurt a lot of defenses if he ran, but because of lack of bulk and last year's lack of depth, the coaches discouraged it.

Do we not hear all the time how important motivation is? Well if Shannon's not going to use the last game we got screwed out of by the schmuckeyes for motivation, what is he going to use?

Also, the last time we played the se's they came out with a vengence and we looked flat, until we realized we were in a war. Don't let that happen this time. Our teams of old would have gone into se stadium walked up to Ohio St. players told them they were going to punch them in the mouth and then proceed to do it. Teams were scared to death of us.

Unfortunately, I believe that was the key to our greatness and something we no longer have.

PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG.

Brian,

Thanks for the info on pre-game Columbus. Varsity club sounds good....what's BW3?? See you there.

'CANES 26- OSU 24

...special teams are the difference with Lamar and Bosher...

u serious? pryor is a garbage qb. he has one good game in the rose bowl and suddenly he's the favorite to win the heisman!? i dont think so. christian ponder? kyle parker? tyrod taylor? theyre all better than pryor.

Ponder, Parker, Taylor, and Pryor...that are all bad QB's.

Throw Robert Marve in that same group too.

Pryor???? Cmon lets get real. Take him for what he is....a glorified running back that throws the ball when the defense breaks down. He is what he is...not much. He will make a good qb in the pros........in Canada. Maybe will have a longer career in pro football than the infamous Maurice Clarett....LOL

Marve looked the same as he did with us yesterday. Lots of rolling around the pocket, completions were all hitch routes. Threw it up for grabs about 6 times 2 being intercepted. Even Mike Mayock of the NFL Network talked about how he's never gonna be a pro qb cause he won't mature.

Cannon Smith got pulled after 3 series and has now lost his starting job at Memphis to a Redshirt Freshman.

Of all the transfers, Jermaine Mckenzie looked the best. He's tall and stringy but looked like he's got hands of glue.

One poster previously said that it would mess up the development of Storm if he didn't play now. How can redshirting mess up a kids development? Lamar miller redshirted(and he probably was the best RB in practice all last year) and this kid is about to take off now after doing so. If we didn't have any other backs I would understand some of your gripes about not playing storm. Our backfield is loaded, and it's not just bodies out there taking up space, ala J.J.

In all fairness to Marve, he is probably dealing with the same suspect o-line that he had to deal with while he was at UM. What would Dorsey look like under center at Purdue?

At UM one injury or off-field issue can cost you your starting position, Marve had both. A little adversity and humility will be good for this kid. He should also have to pay dearly in practice for his flip into the endzone! "Swagger" only looks good when you're winning!

Go 'canes!

u guys, listen up...i live in columbus half the year, and ill say two things about pryor: he is without a doubt a horrible passer that cannot read passed his first option, but he is by far the quickest and most illusive runner miami has ever faced. not only that, he is surrounded by a great huge o line and great receivers that make him look good. their defense is one of the best in the country. now, i hate ohio state ever since 2002 more than any other team in any other sport, mainly because if u are a canes fan who lives in columbus half the year they are obnoxious horrible ignorant racist fans, second worst in the country behind wv, wlrst becaise they pack 100 k into the stadium every game.
and thats the second to last thing i want to mention. jacory got rattled playing in places like va tech....he almost undoubtedly, along with the others, hae never played in an environment as hostile as this one.
lastly, any canes fan thats been around for the last decade worth his salt has been waiting for this game. buckeues fans believe they will win by three tds, at least. are they right? will the canes and the acc take a major step forward or back next saturday? ive been hoping forward ever sjnce they scheduled this game. its payback time.

storm should redshirt. berry and miller have it, as well as coop. he needs time. bryce brown wasnt ready last year (haha)

the only area i'm concerned about is Run D. although, we had our stuff squared away last year when playing GT. so, i'm counting on them to minimize ohio states run game

ALOT of inbreeding in ohio thats for sure!!

If U didn't attend the U and U are a fan of the U, the U are a LOSER! All U guys that fit this profile need to get a life--this isn't pro football. If you want to cheer for a geography, cheer for the Miami Dolphins.

The real U is Miami's bigger, better, badder university -- FIU. The sleeping giant awakens.

OMG....Dude you must be smoking some HEAVY dope. FIU???? You shoulda studied a little in your special ed. classes.

hey dude who posted the comment above - everybody knows that FIU is a safetry school - but i bet you're too dumb to know what that is

Did JD Looney or ted graduate from UM? Let me take a wild guess----NO. Do your homework and stop being lazy idiots -- FIU is at least as good academically as UM and in many disciplines much better.

99.9% of UM fans have NO affiliation with the university and couldn't dream of getting into either UM or FIU.

U Clowns.

whats this stupid FIU hype? a) this is a canes app meaning you went out of your way to buy this app just to talk about your pointless school. b) didnt you guys get wrecked by FAU 3 years in a row? And you think you can take on our canes? please.

fcapo90, FIU can't "take on" your 'Canes for one simple reason: UM refuses to play FIU in football!

U scared! U know it. I know it. The I is on the rise! U can't hide from the truth.

A couple of points. First the responses to the re-tards that have posted here (9mm and its over for U,maybe one of the same):

- How dare you undermine the loss of life by the hands of murderers who took Pata's life. What kind of sub human pathetic road kill di your trailer mother give birth to?

_ Please show me proof that ALL of the 93,000 fans that gosee the Turds at the Sw(D)a(u)mp are alumni? please tell me that every single pickup truck in Alachua county with a "Florida Cracker" bumper sticker went to the school?

Now for the important stuff:

Storm should redhirt. Between Miller, Berry, Coop and Clements, we have our rb core.
I cant imagine a deper core of rbs ANYWHERE. All NFLers. Proof of what we used tohave: Tyron Moss, Charlie Jones, Javarris james (none in the NFL, JJ just got cut).

Ponder and Tyrod taylor are as good of runners as Pryor.

Marve and taylor Cook are both 0-1 on their respective starts. Neither looked particularly good. marve had 2 picks. For all of the J12 haters and Marve supporters- Please shut the front door. Shannon knew what he was seeing in Marve. Purdue is more of an option/ spread offense and he still stunk. Against the pathetic ND defense. Imagine going against the FSU, VTech speed?

its over for u. like i said.. FAU. If you cant hold a candle to fau do you honestly think miami is "scared?" go spend your money on a book about reality rather than cane apps to blow smoke at. Idiot.

Addressing Its over for U, ur stupid. Did anyone notice Taylor Cook as the third string QB at Rice, he was #2 at Miami (Dummy)

You Hurricanes are going to suffer mightily this Saturday. Ohio State is going to destroy you--and you don't deserve the reasons why. Remember that 'swagger' your program used to have? OSU took it from you and they still have it. Look away folks, look away.
