Shannon orders shutdown of Twitter accounts

If you want to know what quarterback Jacory Harris or any other Miami Hurricanes are thinking before their next big game, you'll have to be friends with them on Facebook because they won't be on Twitter anymore.

University of Miami coach Randy Shannon has ordered a shutdown of all players' Twitter accounts, effective by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday according to UM's sports information office. The reason: Shannon wants less distractions.

"I called coach Shannon, who is out recruiting, and he told me he's asked players to shut down their Twitter accounts," UM sports information director Chris Freet said. "The goal is to limit distractions and help them focus. There are bigger goals than Tweeting."

Here are some of the players' final Tweets:

> Brandon McGee: "who gonna write my twitter account obituary??? lol" yall holla at me on facebook lol ill be there bean bag chilling Jet living

> Ryan Hill: "I’M SHUTTING DOWN MY TWITTER ACCOUNT IN 5 MIN. I THANKYOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND FEEL FREE TO FACEBOOK ME-RYAN HILL. GOD BLESS YOU ALL"

> Damien Berry: "It’s soo hard to say good bye to twitter mane…"

> Lee Chambers: "Twitter it’s been a pleasure. My account will no longer exist after today. Nothing personal, it’s business….."

> Jordan Futch: "dis my last tweet see yal in da spring."

Shannon used to have personnel monitor players tweets. Apparently, he hasn't been happy with the fact players are tweeting so close to kickoff and sharing so much personal information.

I'll have more later.

I am sure this will make Shannon a better game day coach.

Not surprised, I think to get J12's attention further he needs to sit on the opening series against Pitt.

J12 will be okay..... in the long run. No Cool-Aid for me but still a believer!!!

Shannon not the terrible game day coach critics make him out to be, again what are your credentials for saying he is a bad game day coach.
Have you ever been a coach on any level in order to be such a critic?
Was he a bad game day coach against FSU and Ga.Tech last year? Against OU last year?

Get real folks he ain't going nowhere so lets move on.

"dis my last tweet see yal in da spring."

This guy goes to UM? Really?

OU had a backup QB, FSU is not the team they once were, and we have only beat GT once with Shannon.

What about Shannon never beating UNC, last year's lost to Clemson, and that terrible showing against Wisconsin.

No more excuses for Randy, win the ACC. If not it's time to let him go.

dude give the guy time hes been here for a short time. And every year hes gotten us a steady 2+wins per year. And about Unc or clemson, well we will see this year we play them again. Shannon is a good coach, and now good recruiter. All of the play calling this, and last year has been pretty good, we just couldnt execute, but we were young. Just sit back, be quiet, and watch. Things will happen and things will soon come together, and youll see were right where we need to be!

this is good..i'm following berry and he's taking pics of the shoe as they fly over and lot of other things that don't have them focused...streeter is tweeting about his new car after the loss etc..a bunch of b.s....glad shannon did this.

p.s...I broke the news before you manny! lol

Non-story.

We need to win out and win the ACC Championship or we need a change. Enough is enough.

It bothers the heck out of me that someone hasn't taught these athletes how to speak properly and to construct a coherent sentence. I mean isn't about time... they are in college for Christ's sake...

Listened to Frank Gore on ESPN Radio on Friday or Saturday... "you know... (something unintelligible)... I turned it off for the embarrassment and I just could not stand every other word being "you know" or something I could not understand...

Manny, do you still do the Tuesday UM Forum? If you're covering the Marlins, I guess not. Who could possibly care about the Marlins right now?

That's great. Now on to the real story. Manny,
I've asked this before and I'll ask it again, what are your thoughts on whether the talent level on this team is championship caliber but to reach that level we need different leadership? If the team that made all those mistakes - both mental and physical - and looked unprepared in certain areas of the game against Ohio St. was coached by Jimmy, Butch, Saban, Meyer, the Boise State TCU coach do we have a different outcome? Seems to me that the talent is finally there but there isn't much progression and the same mistakes of past seasons are not being corrected (i.e. tackling, false starts, dropped picks, terrible kickoff coverage etc.) and the team - with a few exceptions - doesn't play with the fire and passion of past Cane teams. To me that's a coaching and motivation problem. Anyone?

They paraphrase for short idots, all u guys have to do is critize the players geesh get a freakn life.

shannon, although not great yet, had nothing to do with receivers dropping the ball....JH was not focused but for the drops to end up in the hands of the defense 3 times is just not normal.... breaks did not go our way....

move on, focus, win out and have no more than 2 losses at year end.... still alot to be positive about....if OSU is really the #2 team then to be in the game in the 4th with 4 picks is pretty good.

like the move, better late than never

way too many dumb posts from these guys that will have the ncaa coming around in a heartbeat

lets get back to ball kids

Maybe Shannon is protecting J12 from getting his feelings hurt from everyone ragging on him for throwing the OSU game away.

Does Jacory actually have to shut his down too or was it already intercepted on Saturday?

Yeah. That will solve the problems... NOT!

How about some tackling drills effective 2:35 - and you don't have to be a coach at any level to recognize that Shannon is not a good gameday coach. That's like saying you have to be a professional singer to know if somebody can sing well. And for the record I played college football and coached at the high-school level....I heard John Gruden needs a job

They should start following the Gaytor tweets now, they are far more interestering than an episode of Cops on Fox!!!! You can also follow Gaytor tweets on your police scanner!

Next CBS reality show "Gaytors Big Brother After Dark in the Gainesville Jailhouse"... a must watch!

Everyone wanted to fire Butch after the U Washington game (me included), and they didn't lose for another 2+ years. Not saying that this team is there, but we don't know it isn't either. I remember being pretty depressed about dropped passes, lack of development, poor play calling etc. after that one, and I was ready to usher Butch out the door. The big difference between those two teams was the QB. Dorsey was playing in his first pressure-packed road game against UW, while Harris has an entire season as a starter and another as a co-starter under his belt. Still, if we end up with 11 wins and an ACC title, I'll count it as another step forward, just not quite as big a step as I think we were capable of. It's hard to imagine what Jimmy Johnson would have done to OSU with this team...but I bet OSU would still be in pain a couple of days later.

Go Canes!

Oh, and Twitter is the single stupidest concoction of the digital age. I wreaks of attention grabbing prima donas, and I'm glad Shannon grounded it. What could college kids possibly have to share with the world that's so urgent they can't post it to a Facebook update. Take their phones away on gameday too, and any other social networking electronic devices they might have. They're not competing on American Idol here...they shouldn't be thinking about anything but the game.

Lack of player development is Shannon's problem, not game planning IMO. I thought the gameplan was fine.

Whatever on the Twitter thing. I would let these kids be, they already give enough of their time.

Agree with the comparison to the 2000 team, this is similar to the loss at UW. This team is good now and very close to being great.

Randy is the best coach for this team. I remember people saying Jimmy Johnson could not win the big game after the first couple of years, and look how that turned out.

Jacory is a very good QB. I believe that missing Spring practice while rehabbing from surgery had an impact on his performance. He just was slightly out of synch on Saturday.

This team will finish 11-1 or 10-2 and play in the ACC championship game.

Hey Chicago Cane: U wanna know what JJ would have done against OSU? Put it this way: There would not have been 4 interceptions and Telemaque would be a lot more productive. And that bog new Offensive lineman from Minnesota would have been the best damn thing since sliced bread.

We got a real good team. And, believe it or not, the national championship is not lost on this team.

With some people, you cant never win no matter how hard you try. We could have Jesus coaching and they would still complain.

Good for Randy. They need to focus on their academics and their sport.

How many games did Jimmy lose the following year after the canes had just won a championship? Nevermind the fact the fact Jimmy's starting quarterback threw count them 5 interception straight to PSU defenders(not deflected or recievers running the wrong route)But I guess Vinnie knew Jimmy would Not pull him either, since he had the Heisman. Jacory hit every reciever in their hands on 3 of the 4 interceptions. Jacory passed for 232 yards Terelle past for 235. Last but not least, Why are you complainers UM fans anyway, Go be OSU,PSU,BAMA,Boise State or Notre Dame fans!!!!!! All their coaches are great gameday planners

I was at the UW game in Seattle. The difference was Dorsey was a sophomore, he sharing time with Kenny Kelly his freshmen. Harris is a junior, and he has already against OU,against Wisconsin in a bowl game. Miami only lost that game by a few points. Miami did not look like they even had an offense against OSU. The 2010 Miami is no where near the team on 2000.

Its amazing how slow this guy moves. Any real coach would have everything set in place from DAY 1. Not making a little change here and there over a 4 year period. Hes just dragging this out to buy him more time.

This just in: No arrests in Coral Gables, hence the same crappy players will be starting this week against the Big East power Pitt panthers.

Funniest post all day.

20 bucks says after Jacorys 3rd interception this week he fakes another injury.

How many would really be happy with a worthless ACC title? Am I really supposed to feel good about that? Run the table & WIN a bcs bowl game or bust. I dont care about winning in a garbage conference. They can keep that trophy.

Hopefully Jacory Harris decides to transfer with the new no twitter rule. Its definitely a possibility.

Really? Jon Gruden? Did you see how he ran a perfectly built machine(Tampa) into the ground? He had all the talent in the world handed to him courtesy of Tony Dungy who like Randy had to take a job ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ELSE WANTED and that involved a program that was basically left in shambles. Like Randy building, Dungy was building only to fall victim to ignorant fans who dont know that once a program is down like that, it just doesnt turn around in a few years.

Aaaaand by the way, I bet all you posters were one of the many who doubted that Dungy was a good gameday coach. He gets fired, lands at Indy and then everyone jumps all over his you know what. All in all give Randy time.

Finally, Randy cant take the snap from center for Jacory, nor can he stand in the pocket and make decisions for him. Randy can't make Travis run the correct route once the ball is snapped even though Travis has run this route im sure at least 200 times over the last 2yrs. He can't make Aldarius hold that ball in the endzone after getting hit. These players are either going to be tough or they are going to continue to fold. This, just like Berry said, is on THEM! Stop trying to through Randy under the bus. But he does need to sit Jacory for a while to teach him that just because you start doesnt excuse bonehead mistakes.

I have to say, this one has to go on Jacory... 4 picks is just straight up unacceptable!!!! But to the other points, I would say an ACC title and a trip to a BCS game would be pretty good for Randy's 3rd year, lets just hope that we can finish the season strong and not fall on our faces!!! One thing is for sure, by year end we will know for sure if Randy is a big game coach or not

Agree with VA soulcane.

But lets aks these questions: Why has Randy not come clean about why he does the things he does?

Why did he alternate jacorry and Marve those games dureing J12's first year? that was ridiculous. marve was the starter and should ahve played all of the games. He never answered why he did such a stupid thing and we finished 7-6.

Why has he NOT opened up the offense, NOT used more screens, why didn't he run berry more last yr and in the bowl?

Why did he not give Berry the ball on 3rd and 1, 4th and 1 against Clemson?

Here's one: Why did we not blitz the c--p out of OSu to put pressure on T Pryor?

Something has to change here guys. The U has to play meaner, tougher. Our D line should scare the s--t out of opposing treams, but they dont. teams laugh at us. Our D-line speed is no longer respected. We get a bunch of studs that never pan out (can someone say Calais campbell?)

Why cant wwe go after a true pocket passer, some big stud kid that can zing it?

Newsflash Jaciorry_ This is no longer Northwestern against Gulliver Prep. You cantjust float passes to your receivers b/c they wont be 20 yds past the corner like in hs.

And why is RS giving the team M-W off? I would have given them the weekend only. Monday theyd be running effen gassers till they puked. And sunday theyd be practicing fundamentals. The days when players used to run on sand are long gone!

These players are soft as h--l

We have the worst fanbase in all of sports. You guys suck! No wonder the city of Miami has a hard time giving money for stadiums, becuase of bums like you.

My my, have any of you ever worn a jock and played on the collegiate level, or are you only good at bashing Coach Shannon.

any self respecting man would never create a twitter account or a facebook account. thats for scraps

this is so pointless!!! is that why we lost coach!? sounds like youre using twitter as a scapegoat here. no more excuses randy. c'mon now...

the only people who are against social networking or any form form of technology for that matter must be over 40 and bitter about the changing times.

@ooster no not even close

What’s up Manny. I didn’t get to watch the game on TV due to being deployed in Afghanistan. I listened to the game on the radio, WQAM via internet. Anyways it seems to me like this team lacks true leaders, Randy shouldn’t have to be the one that leads this team on game day. We need leaders on both sides of the ball to hold players accountable for their continuing mistakes. Turnovers happen I understand but four turnovers is mental mistakes or lack of focus. This team has the talent to win every game but talent alone will not win games, we need leaders to step up. What is your take on the leadership of this team? Thanks Manny

I throw up in my mouth everytime you guys compare this team to the 2000 Canes. This team reminds me of the 2009 team...same old crap.

They keep drinking the cool aid the cigar store indian is going nowhere for 4 more years thanks to that extension he got, why I don't know, I guess all the big time programs are after him or is it because he works cheap

A lost is a lost and you can't change that, but if you guys are going to ask for the coach's head and say to fire him, it's obvious all the "FANS" are just asking for wins. So since some of these fans are not ready to go through the pain with this football team because we can't win, hey there's a team at north called "THE GATORS" that wins a lot of games to go with plenty of arrests. Not to mention all the other stuff they hide. So why not just get off the bus now because as soon as we start winning you so called "FANS" are not wanted for the ride.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE U....... AND YOU'RE ARE NOT WANTED.

Being as old as i am, i see no use for twitter anyway.

If coach though twits were distracting during a game, thats good enough for me.

About the rest of the season...I thought 11-2 with a strong BCS bowl win to finish in the top-5 , and i'm sticking to it.

Good job all u 'Cane fans in section 6 on Saturday. Although frustrated for a good portion of the day, we certainly had our fun at times. Hope to see a good showing at Pitt next week (in section 14).

GO CANES!!

...meant "before, or, leading up to" a game...
