Gameday blog: Miami at Duke

MIAMI -- Our Susan Miller Degnan is in Durham today as the unranked Canes try to rebound from their embarrassing loss to Florida State last week with a win at Duke. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium. You can watch the game on ESPN3.com or listen to it on WQAM.com. Feel free to participate in our discussion below as you tune in.

REWIND: The Canes own a 6-1 all-time advantage and 4-0 record since moving to the ACC against Duke. Last season, UM pulled off a 34-16 win at Sun Life Stadium. The last time the two teams met in Durham, the Hurricanes were led to a second half rally by Jacory Harris in a 49-31 win. A win over the Blue Devils would give the Canes their third road win in a row on the road. UM has played four of its last five away from Sun Life Stadium.

ABOUT DUKE: The Blue Devils are 1-4 and their only win came over Elon in the season opener. They've lost 54-48 at Wake Forest, 62-13 vs. Alabama, 35-21 to Army and 21-16 at Maryland. But they've had an extra week to prepare for UM coming off a bye. The Blue Devils are one of the most productive passing teams in the country, ranking 15th nationally by averaging 295 yards per game. Quarterback Sean Renfree is second in the ACC in passing yards and has tossed 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He has three dangerous receivers in Conner Vernon (34 catches, 548 yards), Donovan Varner (31-386) and Austin Kelly (25-269). The offensive line has only given up eight sacks this season, but four in their last game at Maryland. The team relies on its other quarterback, Brandon Connette, to run the football. He ranks third on the team with 129 yards rushing. Defensively, the Blue Devils have improved over the last two weeks. Since giving up an average of 510.7 yards per game over its first three games, Duke has held its last two opponents to 313.5 yards per game. Five players have made interceptions for the Blue Devils this season. The Blue Devils love to blitz. Duke kicker Will Snyderwine is 9 of 10 on field goal attempts. Punter Alex King is averaging 43.5 yards a boot.

THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON FOR THE U...
> How long quarterback Jacory Harris remains in the game... It's likely the Canes will try to rest Harris some this week against Duke. Spencer Whipple, AJ Highsmith and Stephen Morris all made the trip to Durham.  We might finally get to see what UM's backups really look like.
> How much time freshmen LB Kelvin Cain and WR Allen Hurns get... UM coach Randy Shannon said this week both players might see some action. Keep your eyes open.
> How much pressure the defensive line gets on Duke's QBs... After failing to record a sack last week, I've got a feeling the defensive line is going to come out with something to prove. I'm expecting Allen Bailey and his friends to have a big game.

MY PICK: No reason Miami shouldn't win this game and get some backups into action -- especially coming on the heels of last week's loss. This Duke team isn't as good as the last few Blue Devils teams UM has faced. If this is still a game in the fourth quarter, something is very wrong. MIAMI 45, DUKE 20.

Have you ever had anything positive to say about the Hurricanes Canesjunkie?
You have to be one of the worst fans I have seen that blogs on here

"Travis Benjamin gotta catch that ball...."

LMAO.

CanesSuck !!

Thank goodness that we are not playing Butch Davis and UNC right now. Shannon will not give Kendall Thompkins a chance at WR at all. Kid needs to tranfer to Nebraska next season with his boy Davonte David. Bo will know what to do with a kid like that and we need to throw some money at BOISE ST head coach ASAP. Score would have been 42-0 at halftime if we had that guy...

305:

Since we got whipped last week and are now in an epic struggle with ACC powerhouse Duke, no.

I do not have anything positive to say. About the Miami Hurricanes.

You want something positive...the soft-serve at Joe Robbie is very good. Section 400 or so...excellent.

The site for whiners is open for business.

I've never really said a bad thing about our coaching staff, but this is ridiculous. Whipple is running the same plays over and over again. I thinks it time to look for a OC. Sorry I really like what he did lsat year, but if you can't improve in year 2 with the same group then something is wrong. The problem now is that defenses know how to stop us. time for a new OC. Maybe Leach.

Defensively, we are playing ok, but nothing special.

I was a big supporter of RS. Even when everybody in jacksonville laughs how bad of a coach he is, but I tried of his style lately. No emotions. We need fire in our HEAD COACH. He is a complete reflection of the team , but they have no emotions. I sorry but it time to good too.

Coach Gruden or even Mark Stoops would be nice. I just want to see the fire. I want to see alumi on the sidelines, I want to see the tradition back.

No matter what happens , It always about the U from jacksonville,fl.

Please help this team

You know Whipple hasn't been very impressive this year. You would think he would change a couple of things up, but it's basically the same offense every game.

He'll be up to J12 next week

BC and FSU is keeping me sane, for now.

Is Gruden looking for work in college?

whipple is a fake

You guys know UM is building a medical center on campus?

Middle finger to that on-campus stadium.

i've never had a bad thing to say about our coaching staff. However, lately it looks ridiculous.

Whipple is terrible. Last year was wonderful and he did good things. However, this offense looks bad in years two. Why. Defensives know what to expect and whipple doesn't change the plays. He runs the same play over and over again. this offense should be better, but its not. Time to let him go and be a head coach somewhere else and lets go after leach or even someone else.

Defensive is ok, but nothing special. When they blitz it lloks like offensives know how to stop us. I think it still time for a new DC. If had a good defensive coach, butch davis would have made lovett one at NC.

I've always tried to support RS, even in jacksonville,fl when people would make fun of how bad our coach is. However, lately i've been upset with him. No emotions is a reflection of the team. We need emotion from the coaching staff.

We need our alumi to get more involved. We need tradition back at the U.
We need to look for a coach with the U style. maybe gruden or mark stoops.

no matter what happens, i'm alway going to defend the U.

but please help us.

reduced to blogging Miami vs Duke, how pathetic!

The junkie why waste your time posting or watching the Hurricanes since they seem to be so horrible in your eyes?
You cant really be that bored can you

The medical center footprint would fit 4 football fields in a perfect square....what a joke Shalala has made Ufootball.

Administration doesn't want all U "riff raff" GED diploma poser fans on their campus.

Perfect zone blitz call in that situation.

Defense scores as often as Miami offense. Micanor Regis needs to get into better shape. Nice return though!

305..

Because I'm a Canes fan. It's also amazing to me how bad this team can play at times. How does a team with this much talent play so very bad.

The reason Jacory's numbers are so bad is because the Duke defense knows what they're going to do before they do.

Whipple has decided that no matter the double and triple coverage on the tight-end he's having Jacory throw it to him. Our recievers have absolutely no seperation from the Duke defensive backs...I didn't think I could feel any worse after last week...I was wrong!

Who would have ever thought our best defensive back would be a 300lb defensive linemen?

Jaboy at his finist! He'll be in the NFL soon! (joke)Why is he in the game? Are the back ups that bad that we can't beat duke with them. And this is MIAMI, the place where our third stringers could beat just about 90% of bcs school for years.Terrible!!

MarbleMouf:

I graduated from UM.

There's at least 3 hospitals in a 10 mile radius. Not sure where they are going with that..

I'm done for now. We beat Duke...Duke. So let's not start the 'we're back' posts.

are we really this bad?

How nice...that jaggurnaut Duke takes the ball and rams it down our throats on a 75 yard touchdown drive...another proud moment!

I never understand this (the last few seasons) ... Miami has a chance to put the game away, but they let the other team march down the field and score (!?!?!?) ...

Once again a dull, non emotional game from Miami. It hurts to watch this team play.

Stop the presses a pass completion to a Miami tight-end!

Nice comeback Canes ... now D step up!!!

that drive showed a little fire - need to do it every play thoUgh. GO CANES!!

Whipple still relies too much on the pass. A good team would have made us pay early.

Whip has only called plays on the D2 level, where every1 passes 50+ times a game.

Cleveland should be our TE. Chase Ford has been such a disappointment.

How many penalties is that now

Penalites!!! Penalites!!! Penalites!!!

At this point we have scored less points than ARMY did on Duke!! I remember when we used to beat teams like Duke by 40 plus!! Thanks Randy!! F' en Shmuck!!

LMAO, Duke just recovered the onside kick with 6:00 or so to go in the 4th.

Pannunzio (sp?) yay!

OMG!

Are there any coaches at the game??

2 offsides penalties on Forston and Bailey on the Duke drive.

Maybe too much emotion? I know it's a rivalry game(LOL!)

Blame it on Cain!

Duke QB fumbles ball in the Miami redzone and D recovers.

Cain has played so much better than McCarthy at ILB that even the announcers commented on it.

unimpressive win!!

Cain is a real MLB. McCarthy is an OLB. Cain should be a starter.

Fix the penalties by next week ... playing aggressive = GOOD, silly penalties = BAD. GO CANES!!!

Final score 28-13 and the Canes O & Special Teams look like there's still work to be done.

The good news is that it seems Cain can be a decent ILB and maybe move McCarthy outside like Mathers pointed out.

has anyone thought about the fact that the admin is not helping. allow this team to start the season with some easier games and no soo many road games early.
remember the sec and ohio state look great because they never leave their region and all most non conference games are scrubs

That game was sad....I don't think there's anything wrong except the kids aren't very well coached. I don't get it because Shannon is a winner and so is Whipple. Duke was close to making it a one-possession game late in the fourth quarter.
I'm still going to stay on the bandwagon for the rest of the year and the next with Shannon. But there's something wrong if this year's team can't get to ACC title game and be a serious contender the next year.
I also don't understand why Shannon looks so detached. I'm sure he's not, but he always looks confused and distracted. Coach, appearances DO count for something sometimes, like when players look to you for some leadership, direction, and EMOTION!

This is a program hurting still from the mid-2000's and the tragic murder of a beloved player. Yes, Randy is a great figure for these young men, but he too needs a mentor. Why not JJ?

6 turnovers and that is all we can do? Thank the D for our wins, because if it were not for them we would only have 1 win . There is something terribly wrong with this offense.
