Spencer Whipple backup QB for Duke

Spencer Whipple, who started the season as UM's No. 3 quarterback behind starter Jacory Harris and A.J. Highsmith, appears to be the No. 2 quarterback going into the Duke game at 1 p.m. Saturday (ESPN3 on Internet; No TV).

Whipple is the son of Miami offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple.

Coach Randy Shannon  on A.J. Highsmith after Wednesday morning practice: "Nicked? He's Ok. Left hand, but he's OK. I don't know the extent of it. He didn't do nothing today as far as contact and taking snaps from center and stuff like that. We just have to monitor it and see where it's at.''

Highsmith is wearing a wrist support on his left wrist. There are no bandages or any protection on his hand.

Whipple, who completed one of two passes against FSU, has been in five games (he's the holder) and has completed four of six passes for 32 yards. He has no interceptions.

Highsmith has played in two games -- in the second half against FAMU and for one play at Pittsburgh when Harris was sacked and injured his left shoulder. He has completed four of seven passes for 18 yards, with one interception.

Many believe that Highsmith, the son of former Hurricane great Alonzo Highsmith, will be redshirted this season and converted to a safety.

Look for Miami to get Whipple a decent amount of playing time at Duke, that is if the Canes get a comfortable enough lead. I think Jacory needs to rest up his left shoulder (he now wears a shoulder harness) and groin, and whatever else is ailing him, as much as he can before North Carolina and Butch Davis come to town Oct. 23.

Some comments from Spencer Whipple, a junior, after Wednesday's practice: "Nothing has really changed for me. I've just been preparing the same way all year. That's the way I like to prepare, to be ready for anything that happens, whether you're sixth on the depth chart or 1 or 2. You always have got to prepare the same way, watch the same amount of film, take notes in meetings and be ready whenever your number is called.''

How much does it help getting into games?  Whipple: "It's good. It's fun. Everyone wants to get into the game. It's good experience. But these reps out here in practice, we do periods against our first defense all the time -- two or three times a day. And that's great experience, too, going against those guys because they're so talented."

Spencer, who transferred last year to UM from UMass, said he was "fifth, fourth" team at UMass. "But that doesn't really make a difference. You have to prepare as if you're No. 1, wherever you are. I haven't changed anything about the way I go about practicing or studying film. It has all been the same.''

He asked how he has changed since UMass, where he played in one game in 2008, against Bryant, and completed a 16-yard pass on his only attempt.

"It's just experience,'' he said. "I wasn't very confident while I was there, and my dad has kind of helped me with that, which is a good thing. It's something I kind of needed to build up, my morale and confidence in saying, 'Yeah, maybe I can play.' Being more confident in practice throwing the ball. I think that's the biggest part of my game that has changed.''

On his dad being his coach and giving him advice, Spencer said, "He just supports me. And like I said about the confidence part, when I have a bad day or something goes wrong, sometimes I'm really hard on myself. Coaches have told me my whole career that I get down on myself too easily and my dad is always there to pick me up and show me the positive things I did, which helped bring me out of a slump.''

On Jacory, Spencer said, "He's a confident guy. I don't have to say too much. He knows what he needs to do. He's done it last year. He's taking care of business. He's going to be fine. He's a great quarterback and nothing really much needs to be said to him. He knows what he needs to do and he's practicing really well this week. He's going to do great.''

IMO: Here is what wrong with the U.
In 1976 The University made a commitment to be big time D-1 football program and Hired Lou Saban. Then Howard and everyone knows the history from this point. Somewhere between the end of Butch Davis days and now through Shannon the commitment to being a D-1 powerhouse has changed. The University is more concerned about image and being "The Harvard" of the ACC then being the powerhouse football program we are accustomed to seeing.
We are letting "the problem kids" go that make the nucleus of great teams. Football is a game of emotion and passion and it looks like we have too many choir boys on the team then ruthless studs on the field.
In this time period mediocrity became accpetable in the eyes of the University as long as we kept a good public image.
Now it is acceptable to not know your assignment, not catch the ball, play with no heart, and still not lose your starting job.

makes you think about all the highly recruited qbs berlin, wright, marve, harris

Bring back the bad boys

I would take everyone of them and Costa too over Harris

makes you wonder why Cannon Smith and Tyler Cook transfered to be backups elsewhere

*Taylor Cook

I'm a die hard Miami Hurricane fan. But that lost we suffered to Florida State was uncalled for. If Ja'Corey was hurt why not take him out of the game to keep him from further injuring himself. Greg Cooper came in and we finally had some momentum going for us and what happened we stopped going to him. Leonard Hankerson dropped some key passes that we desperately needed. But my main thing is where is the Tight End we usually dominate with? We cannot expect to win games if our defense is on the field more than the offense..... We have to have someone get the team fired up someone to show leadership.... and Whipple needs to throw some of plays out of his F...... play book. We are known to run out of the I and opens up room for the Playaction Pass We need to find some answers in a hurry... I feel as if HighSmith is being totally disrespected. Ja'corey can play with a groin pull one leg etc etc.. but HighSmith has an injury to his non throwing hand and you wanna start Spencer Whipple. I maybe wrong but we may be in for a fight against DUKE. I thinks it's wrong for Travis Benjamin being blamed for more than half of Ja'Corey Harris Passes. Ja'Corey is a junior and he's still playing like a Freshman....Come oN CANES Let's get it together my wife is a Seminole fan I'm tired of catchin hell about my CANES....this one word makes us different from all the other schools.....SWAGGER......Do we have any left?

I have been waiting on this topic & I think I have studied this topic for awhile. We do need to rest JH.Let JH play the first quarter. Then bring in Whipple.I know he was way in the back for a backup at Umass but dame, we play North Carolina next week & they will bring the pain. They looked at the Clemson & FSU tape on how to kill Miami with the running game. This is NC stlye of football(running). There D is not giving up on the season either. They are coming in to punch us in the mouth like they have been doing for the last 3 yrs.I know, dont look past Duke, but they will try to run to but we will shut them down.If yall dont think Steh Morris is not the truth & just going to sit back next year you better think again.I think Steh Morris has something. It will not be easy for Bridgewater when he come in after JH & Whipple leave.Morris can scramble & he have a big arm. These Qties I like.I am not sleeping on Morris but everyone else is.JH is killing us not running out of the pocket before he got hurt with his groin or shoulder.Let Whipple play because he can run with the ball.I like AJ playing D, because I dont like him as a QB.Remember JH & Whipple will be Snrs next yr.Morris will be ready & I know Bridgewater will redshirt next yr & he should.Morris will not make it easy in 2012 for him.I like Bridgewater but he is selfish (At times, He is also still taking other visit but he want to be the only QB in this class)) from what read on rivals.com, scouts.com & insidetheu.com. He wants to be the only QB be takin this yr & we should not recruit a QB the next yr (?2012).I agree on one thing that he & everyone said is we need to stay home & recruit him hard first.Thats the only thing I dont like about recruits when they do come to a school, they want to put the pressure on the coaching staff by saying they want to start & not take a redshirt. They really saying fuc the snrs & jrs.Yes you will get one or twos guys that comes in & is ready to play right away but not every recruit.

I want all to hear this: If the whole team played like Spence, you get my drift? RS is not the problem, J12 needs QB development. Did someone mention Stoops? I don't think so. That's a 'cool $2 to $ 3 million easily.

I say let RS recruit some more, and keep finishing at 9-4, 8-5.
At least players graduate. Can Stops say the same?

Again, gentleman, what would Jimmy Johnson do? And what kind of motivation would Benny Blades give younger guys?

...51 days 'till the acc championship...

OK. I just though of something: We could bring back Art KeHoe and he could coach J12.

Jimmy Johnson for one thing would not go 8 and 5 or 9 and 4 for a couple of more years, he would win now. JJ would recruit more than 1 QB every year whether they liked it or not. And we are talkin about wins, and national titles not graduating players, although its a nice thing to say. And Bennie Blades would rock somebody's jaw for letting this kind of play go on. Oh and Kehoe was an offensive line coach not a Qb coach that is unless you are thinking of putting pink boy on the line to block. But I do agree that the rest of the defense should take a look at how Spence plays.

U fans are right about one thing if randy does not fire whipple he needs to get fired. maybe whip will call better plays for his son because he sure hasnt called anything that fits jacory. 14 picks to the same garbage playaction pass to benjamin. at least give him more options. he was a winner in the shotgun in high school. most of u know nothing of that. put him in a system that he can have success in. be real fans and call it like u see it. playaction with out runnning the ball ha? yeah great oc.

maybe he can call better plays for his son bcause he sure hasnt done anything for jacory. playaction with out the run. he some hot garbage. if randy doesnt fire whip he needs to get fired.

Either way Randy needs and should be fired.

Maybe this dude has a point? I picked it up on some of the other cane sites.

You're comparing Jimmy Johnson to Randy Shannon? Are you kidding?

Jimmy Johnson and Randy Shannon are solar systems away from each other in terms of coaching ability.

If seen Jimmy get more upset on Fox set than Shannon has during any of the beatings we've taken.

Maybe you were trying to say Jimmy would do better with this team.

I hope that was the case....lol.

Empty stadium against UNC....eat that Donna.

To the folks who say Mike Leach is the answer, I say "grow a pair!" Leach is a head case, waiting to happen.

RS is not bad, he's not good either, but who, really, could do a better job?

I ask U: What would Jimmy Johnson do with this team? And, what would Benny Blades do out there on the field?

^^^^^^And thats why we cant win right there^^^^
who gives a rats arse about what they would do....they aint comin through the door in their white stallions to save the day!!! those days are long gone homie.

Donna Shalala crowned Randy Shannon as her head coach with two weigh points...only one being a deal breaker, which you will find as #2:

1. Try to win more games than you lose
2. Clean the program up…no more arrests…no more dancing and preening on the field…no more mugging for the cameras…AND NO CONNECTION WITH THE PAST AS WE, THE ADMINISTRATION, BELIEVE THAT PERIOD IS A DARK STAIN ON THE UNIVERSITIES RECORD.

You can scream, kick, insult, curse and threaten, but Randy Shannon is doing EXACTLY what he has been ordered to do.

All of the misguided hysteria about Randy’s demeanor on the sidelines is just that, misguided hysteria! For those who keep pointing at former UM coaches as examples…puleeeeze…Dennis Erickson wasn’t and still isn’t exactly a fire breather on the sidelines nor is Howard Schnellenberger who wore a sports coat with arm patches and smoked a pipe...and between the 2 of them they won 3 National Championships.

So, you, Melvin, Leon, Michael, Gino and all other Canes fans can slam Randy, but you are only shooting the messenger … if you want real change, then Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt and the UM Trustees are your go to people. But, I wouldn’t threaten them with holding your breath until they acquiesce to your demands, unless of course you can do so ‘til hell freezes over.

you know what the most aggrevating part about shannons personel decisions is? its that he doesnt start the biggest, fastest, and BEST player... he starts the most consistent player. i dont know about you guys but ill take a phenomenal playmaker who makes a few mistakes here and there over some schmuck with no ability who just does his assignment. how are we ever going to be able to force turnovers with that conservative and scared attitude?

You know it's bad when the Canes back-up quarterback can't even remember if he was the 4th or 5th string at the football powerhouse that is UMass. What the hell?! Are we sure Ken Dorsey doesn't have one more year of eligibility left?

Coach Randy Shannon on A.J. Highsmith after Wednesday morning practice: "Nicked? He's Ok. Left hand, but he's OK. I don't know the extent of it.
.

I don't know the extent of it but he's ok huh Coach Shannon ? It's these type of quotes that we Canes fan find so frustrating about U. U tell us one thing and then another to completely contridict Urself. Makes one wonder when U tell Ur players one thing do they think U mean another. Just be straight up with us Coach. We can handle the truth. We aren't as dumb as U think we are. And by doing that, I'm sure we won't think Ur a dumb as we think U are.

whipple seems to be undermining Jacory for his son spencer.

Um is a f$$$ing

the bottom line is RANDY and his CIRCUS CLOWNS need to go. we need a real coach not an ivy league teacher who wants to run a football club. dont waste ur money anymore until they change the coach.

After listening to the talk shows this morning - I am done as well until we either get - Sean Payton, Bill Belichek, Tony Dungy, or Edgerrin James as the next coach.

the more and more I read about this team, the more I have to vomit!!

I LOVE THE CANES ! GET AFTER IT ! LESS TALK MORE POP ! PLAY HARD DO YOUR BEST I AM WITH YOU 100 PERCENT. KEEP YOUR HEADS UP !

COACHES KEEP COACHING DONT LET DOWN.....

I'm a black guy that thinks Randy is in way over his head and should have been let go yesterday....anybody dare call me racist? Now can we get back to pointing out what's wrong with this detached, confused looking, emotionless pathetic excuse for a game day technician...RANDY HAS GOT TO GO!

I think that this represents exactly the state of Miami football program right now - Mark Whipple the #2 QB (not a slur to MW but he just is not a Div 1 QB)-go to the top for the root of the problem -D. Shalala and her liberal buddies running the school

Posted by: ted | October 14, 2010 at 11:11 AM

I would not think of calling you racist but I have to say that I have never met a black guy named ted.

OK! Ask fsu if our defense is talented. Bet you they'll say its the easiest defense they've faced all year (minus ou). Only in miami will you be the 2nd qb if you were the 4th at umass! Joke.

Kirk Herbstriet says that FSU is the best team he has seen this year.

Things are not always as they seem.

Miami will win the Coastal, then get revenge on the Noles in the ACC Championship game.

Great players want to play for Randy (see Seantrel Henderson) despite what some post on this site to inflamme the situation.

Finally, we could be that train wreck known as the Florida Gators. Even when those cowards try and schedule undefeated seasons and national championships as they attempted this year with only 4 away games they still get thrashed. Only yesterday "Crazy Urban" reinstated Rainey, the kid that threatenned to murder a girl claiming he talked to a lot of people before making that decision. Yeah right Urbie! You talked to your yes men and told them you lost 2 games in a row and had Rainey killed the girl instead of threatening to do so you would still reinstate him. The Flroida Gators...a long history of cowardice and losing.

26 loses in 5 years...on Shannon to get it fixed. I'm not counting on it.

Randall Hill just said that Shannon needs to go in the sid's show.

Nationally we are living in the past but at least we are still in the press

I'd rather have meyer than shannon. At least he plays in a tough conference and wins titles. And Ted glad to see that you are a black man that speaks the truth rather than a delusionalist who just promotes his race when they know that person is not getting the job done like so many others do.

It is one of the great national pastimes to slam the Canes...win...lose...or draw!

Do yourself a favor and stop reading and listening to the media trying to create an audience by using the Canes as their punching bag...this has been going on for 30 years and they know the rest of the country loves to hate the Canes...real red meat stuff!

Like it or not...Miami WILL play in the ACC Championship game and WILL beat the Seminoles in the rematch.

I was a fan of the Canes when they were lucky to win 4 games a year and know what it is like to be a fan of a hopeless Canes team...this is NOT a hopeless Canes team, but unfortunately the same cannot be said of some so-called fans.

Canesjunkie,

You are addicted, strung-out, hooked-on, gots the bad habit, lickin the bones, rattling, Billy whizzed, disco-biscuited, jagging on anything you can cook-up or quote where someone has said something negative about the Canes.

You need to go cold turkey and start finding the positives! Stop overdosing on believing anything and everything written or said negative about the Canes. Please score some good Canes news and post it here. Tranx out and enjoy the ride brother.

Go Canes!

That's funny....

I know, I'm worn out with all this stuff.

I don't think we're going to the title game, but this will all play out.

Are you people airheads when referring to the fact Richt doesn't have a title ring?

He didn't get one as head coach, but he did get one as the offensive coordinator behind a MASSIVELY potent offense during FSU's late 90's run.

You definitely were able to tell a difference when he left for UGA after the '99 season.

Doesn't matter anyway, we wouldn't be able to afford him and being close to some HIGH-UP-THERE UGA Boosters I don't think you could blast Richt out of Georgia even if they fired him (at least not the state, his family loves it there).

And just what makes U think they can beat UNC and butch who has owned Shannon, Va Tech, and a Georgia Tech team in Atlanta to get to this ACC title game that u think we are going to get to. And lets say for arguments sakes that all the stars allign and that happens what makes u think Shannon can beat Jimbo and FSU when SHannon and company could not get it done with a sold out crowed on our home field? My friend I hate to inform U that it is U that are strung out. The only way your scenerio happens is if the Lord Jesus Christ made it happen because SHannon sure can't coach them there. So I would advise U to get to praying because the way they played Saturday nite they'll be lucky to beat DUKE. ACC championship good luck with that one pal.

The Lord Jesus Christ can't make it happen, dude. He is like Santa Claus. Doesn't exist.

Championships is all that matters:

Since we can’t agree about the Canes and their future, at least we can agree what crap those scumbag, cowardly Florida Gators are.

We agree that their head coach is a cheating, insane dirtbag…right?

We agree that Brantley is a rag arm QB who was the most overrated player in the country coming into this season…right?

We agree that their football program has more arrests than the West LA Cripps and Bloods…right?

We agree that Bama once again obliterated the always overrated Gators and LSU came into their house and beat the clueless Gators on the worst conceived trick play in history…right?

We agree that the Gators cowardly scheduled only 4 away games this year and are so petrified of the Canes they won’t play us…right?

Well…now it’s your turn because I am sure you have plenty more to add as the only person who posts on this board who wouldn’t pile on is that fat, lying, racist pig who posts on this site while pretending to be a Canes fan. Now go get’em!

Hey Bull, I can agree that Florida is cowardly for not playing us every year.

I can't however agree on whether or not Meyer cheats. I know he has brought them 2 national titles and Shannon has brought us zilch as in 0. I kinda dig how he protects his players, gets fired up, makes adjustments in games and has a sense of arrogance about himself.

And I can't say that Brantley has a rag arm either. Looks pretty strong with nice velocity. He would actually fit alot better in our pro style scheme than in Meyers option spread offense with his arm, vision, intelligence, and slight mobility. But then again anything would be better than what we have at QB if Harris supposedly gives us the best chance to win.

To be honest with you I could care less about the gators or their arrest record. Thats their business and I don't like to see anybody get arrested but I will tell you that when we were the bad boys we were at our best. So I say bring it back, start dancing on people in the end Zone and knockin people out on defense. Everybody wants to see that because we used to be entertaining now watchin our canes is like getting a root canal for gods sake.

I do agree that Bama obliterated them and I loved every minute of it. ANd the trick play that was pretty sweet but heck I hate all three of them anyway.

Don't really see where how many home games they schedule is any of my business. Thats just smart on their behalf. Do however agree I have wanted to see the Canes get a hold of them since Meyer kicked that field goal on us last time. If we had Jimmy johnson here he would hang 50 or 60 on them. But we don't were stuck with Shannon and Harris unless we get lucky and SHannon gets fired so u and I are looking at repeat of Saturday night.

Sorry man but I really don't give a hunk of $hit about the gators or meyer or what they do and how many of them get put in jail. I'll let u worry about them and I will worry about our canes and getting back to winning championships. That however will not happen as long as we are stuck with that ignorant, no coaching, racist Randy SHannon and his little wanna be drag queen Harris. U see real Canes only care about the Canes and Winning Championships cause thats all that really matters. U know that right?
Hey good luck finding or getting in touch with that fat lying racist pig that pretends to be a Canes fan by making one pointless, meaningless, and pathetic excuse for that idiot Shannon and Harris.

Anyone that would take that attitude with the Hated Gators either has no idea as to the history of the Canes program or are not who they say they are.

First of all Jacory is a much better QB than Brantley...not even close!

Urban Meyer walked into a program that Ron Zook left with a full cupboard. Conversely, Larry Coker left Randy Shannon with players that wouldn't start on a good high school footbal team. Again, point to Randy Shannon...he's a much better coach than Urban and will prove so while winning the Coastal division, then beat FSU in the rematch and end up winning the Orange Bowl. And next year he will win a National Championship--and it won't matter how hard you try to trash the program junior--it's coming!

All do a lot more with a lot less than Coach Scam. That's what you get when an unqualified female Troll hires a leftover coach with a nice binder presentation off of a failed staff. And if we sniff Whipple...good lord
