Virginia thoughts, Shannon video

NEW YORK -- Devastating loss for the Hurricanes Saturday at Virginia. How devastating? We'll find out in the coming days.

Not only is quarterback Jacory Harris' status uncertain, but so is the direction of this program. One week they look like they're ready to get on a roll after an impressive home win against North Carolina. The next, they're down 24-0 to Virginia and scrambling in the fourth quarter just to stay in it. Are they ACC contenders? Or, just another mediocre football team?

Honestly, I'm done trying to make sense of this team. The only thing we know for sure is they're inconsistent, unreliable and maddening to watch for fans. At this point, the Canes are going to need a lot of help to achieve their goal of winning the ACC title. Even if they get that help somehow, which team is going to show up week to week? We have no clue.

If there was one positive to come out of this game, it was the play of freshman quarterback Stephen Morris in the fourth quarter. Yes, he threw two interceptions. Yes, this was only Virginia. But Morris rallied the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter and in my opinion is probably the best quarterback for Mark Whipple's offense (that includes if Jacory Harris is healthy or not). Morris was handpicked by Whipple out of Monsignor Pace, where he ran a pro style offense. Harris ran the spread from the shotgun at Northwestern.

I'm not saying Morris is going to be the best quarterback for this team right now or the rest of this season. He's still very green. But in the long run -- assuming Whipple is still here -- Morris is a much better fit than any of the other QBs on the current roster for Whipple's play-calling.

Anyway, here is what UM coach Randy Shannon and center Tyler Horn talked about after the game. Video is courtesy of UM's Sports Info office.

Rudimus U are completely right. Da U has been transformed into a Joke. Instead of teams getting scared when we show up, they just laugh at us. The U has been replaced by the O from Oregon as being the school that scares people. That is a shame.

And who cares that SHannon has Shalala's endorsement. Does she think that since she made that statement that we are going to accept Shannon's failures. We don't want her Ugly self either. Like my fellow Cane said the football program built alot of those nice facilities for the school. And in return they destroyed the Orange Bowl so the Marlins could have a stadium. Who cares about the Marlins anyway. This is a Football City. Maybe when the Marlins relocate to another city we will get our stadium back. Nobody pays hundreds of dollars to see a debate team or any of that other nerd junk. People want to see the U kick azzes and take names.

I promise you, I GUARANTY you, that if Miami dangled big-time dollars out there they would get plenty of interest from proven coaches. If you don't think it's about $$$$$ then you are crazy. Miami locked in Shannon for a measly $1 mil from the get-go, the bottom of the barrel of the already lowly ACC salaries. Even with his new contract he is not even in the upper half of the ACC head coach salaries.

If Miami dangled $2 mil-plus they would get some solid interest and if they went to the $3 mil plus range trust me they would get a proven commodity in here. I can't believe some of you guys think there would be no interest at that price level because the coach would be afraid of fans or the pressure or the Miami public schools are no good or any other lame reason I have seen posted. That's crazy talk. It's about the Benjamins plain and simple and I ain't talkin about Travis.

As for Coker he would probably still be here but for the FIU debacle. Shalala has referred to that incident time and time again as a black-eye for the U and it was evidence of a coach who had lost control of his program (not that he ever had it). Part of the Shannon hire, other than the money issue, was his disciplinarian nature. Shalala is on the record that she fancies herself to be a tough cookie and that Shannon puts her to shame in that department. She loves that and she loves the complete lack of negative press regarding on-field and off-field antics at the U. Sure she would love national championships as well but she is content with what she has now with Shannon and she is actually very proud of the progress of the program in terms of weeding out troublemakers and kids that give the U bad press.

What will it take to get the U to lay out the $$$ and get somebody in here who knows what they are doing? Just like at most other schools, it is booster pressure that helps get things done. Unfortunately the U boosters do not wield the same level of influence as boosters at other big-time programs. That's a problem.

Shannon is in over his head, both in game-prep and on game-day, that much is clearly evident. It has also become apparent that being a disciplinarian does not necessarily equate to being a motivator. As for recruiting, I promise you he would be easily out-recruited by a name coach if the U would hire one.

Miami has hired two straight HC from inside the program and look where we are. It's time to lay out some real $$$ and get someone in here with a plan who knows what the f they are doing. This on-the-job-training for the HC stuff is just not working.

wow! what a bunch of experts!

It has gotten to the point that the facts are being all denied by everyone at UM....
Fact, Randy is a nice guy and cheap and does not know how to verbally motivate anyone...it took a screaming meeting with Antrel Rolle to motivate the players, and Shannon, and even after that they still couldn't get it up at the start against NC. So back to usual this week, no verbal motivation and now Harris is crushed. Everyone in the area, on the team and on the coaching staff has known the inevitable was coming in that Harris is and always was FRAGILE. All the false hype around the UNC victory...who are we kidding? Are we forgetting that NC had lost five first rounders by suspension? Look where UM is with one starter gone. For the record, Schiano did not take this job because of all the liberal crap and poor budget for the football program..no athletic dorm at UM..they have to all live like normal students! Go look at what he has built at Rutgers...world class facilities, athletic dorm, 45K at each home game and they get 2 million to play Army at a home game in the Meadowlands....UM is broke, has no stadium, has a tiny alumni, and a token coaching staff.
It is reality time, and DI football is a big business which it was not ten years ago. UM is a tiny private school with a small vocal alumni and a small Butch left knowing the athletic department was broke, and even lost money in the national championship year. Check it out you doubters out there.
We should follow the agents, who all left when Davis did, and move to California. Only big state schools with huge alumni endowments can play big time in this new world. Watching Oregon, Iowa and Auburn really shows how much different things are today and what UM can't afford to put on the field. We should really be wondering if UM should consider becomming a DII program, where the players can have the fair chance to be national champions against schools of equal sizes and resources.

Shannon's UM = 8 or 9 wins at best! Sad for this Once dominent program!

I hope Morris is the answer. There were underneath passes for him all day, but he locked in on the recievers and threw a couple of long balls that were intercepted.

Morris if you are reading this, it's o.k yo look off your primary reciever and go underneath. If this was done in the UVA game, we would have won.

Whipple, coach this young man up, which i doubt you can. Morris you probably know more than Whipple, plz go thru your progressions.

Why protest the 1st quarter?!?! Just stay home and let Shalala have her little student team.

Disgusting, embarrassing, sucks, there are so many more words to describe losing to a SORRY VIRGINIA TEAM YESTERDAY!!!

Poor tackling, penalties, dropped balls, ints, poor special teams again, missed assignments, injuries, poor play calling, no backup qb with any experience, where does it end?

4 years of "improving"? THIS TEAM IS GOING BACKWARDS!! WHO ARE WE KIDDING HERE?

FIRE THE ENTIRE COACHING STAFF NOW AND HIRE SOMEONE WITH DIV1 EXPERIENCE WHO ACTUALLY GETS FIRED UP AND CAN MOTIVATE AND COACH THE TEAM!!

This team has as much talent as nay in the NCAA and we just got beat by sorry-ass Virginia?

I am embarrassed to be a Cane fan today after 25 years, oh where did the glory years go?

This team has sleepwalked through 3 of the last 4 games. The only hope is if Shannon resigns b/c UM is not going to eat his contract.

At least the football team is ranked second nationally in graduation rate (81 percent).

While Shalala fiddles and the Hurricanes burn, any recruit reading this article may don his running shoes and hightail it for another program. The message is clear, we're more concerned about graduation rates than football. Okay, fine, but don't be surprised to see funds begin to dry up from the football program as the team becomes more and more ho-hum.

Maybe an idea would be to start a grassroots Hurricanes Tea Party and call for the ouster of all the people who are dedicated to keeping our Hurricanes a mediocre football program. At the same time, call for a national boycott of buying tickets, both seasonal and box office until we get some action. Nothing will get their attention faster than putting our hands in their pocketbooks.

If that seems radical, consider Shalala has no plans to get rid of Randy. In a sense she is thumbing her nose at possibly a majority of Hurricane's alumni and loyal fans calling for Shannon's retirement.

I hope Morris is the answer. There were underneath passes for him all day, but he locked in on the recievers and threw a couple of long balls that were intercepted.

The post above best describes the "MODERN DAY MIAMI FAN"... A kid that is the 4th string QB who was to be red shirted this week and gets very few snaps during the week comes in under the worst circumstances and plays decently and he is slammed. That's your Miami fan of today or at least those who calls themselves fans!

I won't waste time wading through all of the other nonsense posted on this blog, but suffice to say it is the attitude displayed on this blog that is the reason why recruiting top flight players has become so difficult and why Miami will N-E-V-E-R be able to recruit and hire a name coach.

You even have one moron stating how happy he is that Jacory was injured...ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE GREAT MIAMI FANS...WHAT A JOKE!

PS: Stay tuned for Teddy Bridgewater to decommit this week. And further stay tuned to read the posts by the same whack jobs who are currently slamming Teddy to scream it was Shannon's fault he didn't sign with the "U" when Teddy goes on to star at FSU, Florida or some other school.

Boycott the Maryland game? Didn't that already happen at the North Carolina game? Is anyone going to notice a "boycott?"

Boycott the Maryland game...more destructive absurdity.

Of course those calling for such a foolish action are the same ones screaming the players quit, but see no problem calling on the fan base to quit...pure gold!

Good I hope Bridgwater does decommit. What have we lost other than another QB that should be playing WR. Big deal.

The Defense isnt as bad as people are saying- The problem is the pathetic, stale, boring, slow, undisciplined, uncoached, predictable, unimgainative offense. Offense. That is the problem. How do you expect to win with 5 ints? Against anyone? That is five possessions that the other team has. Those are 5 possessions in which the Defense has to be back on the field.

24 points scored on Miami. Look at why the D isnt as bad:

georgia scored 24 on Florida.. USC scored 30 something on Oregon. Virginia nearly upset USC at USC. Arkansas scored like 40 on Auburn.
baylor beat Texas.

My point is, teams now have to outscore other teams. The name of the game now is offense. With the arrogance, and stupidity of Whipple, there is no way we can score points.

Whipple= drive killer.

In several games UM has had great drives (Ohio state, etc), get to the redzone, and Whipple has J12 throw these low percentage passes. Or we may be driving, consuming the clock, and he starts firing bombs downfield. Translation: either incompletes, interception, or sack. And the Defense can't rest. trust me. Shannon does notget along with Whipple. You can see the body language. Whipple will be the sacrificial lamb:
a) he has not develop J12 or the offense
b) he continues to throw Tb as the split end to catch jump balls despite having several >6-1 foot receivers (Byrd, Johnson, Streeter)
c) Not consistently using the run
d) Not consistentlyusing TEs
e) having the gall to put his son in whenhis son was not even ready- If he cant make his son better, how can he make J12 or any other QB better?
f) He refuses to adjust

I say Look at how bad our offense is, and that may be the solution to our woes. First step, get rid of Whipple.

Championships, I hope you choke on your dinner tonight. One less idiot "fan" to spew garbage.

The lb's are too small, why are we not using Cain (mlb) Futch (wlb) and spence (slb)....why why why!?!

Let the search for a new coach begin. I've always been a Shannon supporter but it time to go. Gary Patterson or Mike Leach are my top 2 canidates with Mike Leach at top because he is not coaching and i think the kids in south Florida would love to play in his system.

Good I hope Bridgwater does decommit. What have we lost other than another QB that should be playing WR. Big deal.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I give you the prototype of the so-called Miami fan who is helping destroy the Canes football program.

Granted, there's a very good chance this guy is posing as a Miami Fan (Sean Wilson, Rullman, etc), because you would have to be insane, stupid and learning challenged to not want Teddy Bridgewater to play for your team...one of the nations most prized recruits in the 2011 class.

But, let's play along, this clowns bellows how bad the Canes are and his solution to making the Canes better is to run off a world-class athlete that can play QB or wide receiver or defensive back. This is the logic this brainiac brings to the table.

Posted by: Life in the Big City!

So what...let Bridgewater decommit. He'd be crazy to play for Miami. Any recruit worth anything should look for another program.

Why would anyone want to play for Randy Shannon?!?! The guy is a disaster as a head coach.

Kids are gonna decommit because of the fanbase..yeah right.

Kids will decommit because our coach is a sack of crap who can't even get us a win over Virginia.

Actually, I'm tired of hearing about "we have each others back ", and "we're a family" comments in many of the player video interviews. They are kidding themselves.

Manny, I salute you for "Telling It Like It Is"...sometimes it is hard to be objective when you are so close to something day-to-day...You & Susan are a Great Team...wish our Canes were!

Now moron #2 has weighed in on running a prized recruit off as a way to make the Canes a better team.

Again, I suspect this clown and Championship fool are really Sean Wilson/Erik Rullman.

Folks, meaning you real Canes fans, I too am terribly disappointed (pizzed off) starting with the FSU debacle and now yesterday's nightmare. But, going along with the idiots like Championships and Canesjunkie is the worst possible thing we could do as people who love the Canes.

Stay with the program as college football is so unpredicatble (which is why it is so great) and you never know how this season might end up. If the coaches continue to underperform then it will fall on the shoulders of Hocutt and Shalala to correct the situation.

I don't think anyone with an IQ above 5 believes that by the fans ripping the program during the season will create an immediate change in leadership over the coming weeks. The only thing this type of destructive behavior will accomplish is making sure 4 and 5 star recruits don't sign with us.

I compare this to the passengers learning there's a leak in the hull of the ship and their immediate solution to that news is for everyone to start drilling more holes in the hull.

Let's all be part of the solution--not part of the problem!

Fire Everyone!!! The Canes need a coach who has some emotion not someone like the current HC. Randy Shannon can still save the program by steppin down at the end of the year!

Bill Parcels once said you are what your record is. Ok-what is Randy's record after 3 1/2 years...35-30...let's stop talking about potential or style points, etc. Football is only about winning and losing. forget all the other garbage. If this mediocre record in a very average conference with no division crowns, no ACC championships and losing your last 2 bowl games is acceptable, then no doubt the program no longer cares about the product on the field. If the product matters, then one can only come to a single conclusion-start over now and rebuild starting with the Head coach. the other comments about stephen morris starting for the rest of the year is a good start to transition out of Randy's ineffective team structure. Go to the bench and find players who want to play now and play hard...tyler horn's comments are unacceptable...wouldn't it be great if we could all go to work and decide at the end of the day to start working...yeah right!

While Bull gator is partly right, I'm telling you, we disgruntled fans of a once proud team/program are not only disgruntled, but also sad. This is unacceptable, and unforgiving.

How can a team with this much talent and speed be beat by Virginia? I am not saying UVa has no talent, but was it harder to play at UVa or Clemson? J12 or no j12, he still threw an int and guaranteed her would have thrown at least another one.

How can coaches (whipple mainly but Shannon is responsible as well) decide to put a "QB" and I use the term loosely like Spencer Whipple when Morris is sitting on the sideline and so is Highsmith?

How can Whipple not run the ball 20-30 times, ESPECIALLY when he has whipple in there, at least to loosen the D and relax him? Thatkid looked like he was about to have heart attack he was so nervous. I mean, what was he a wlak on at MAss? How can we have a former walk on at mass, be the QB at an institution that has won 5 Ncs on a ccount of top QB play?

What are Whipple and Shannon thinking pleeasssee tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do they even formulate a gameplan? Do they even comunicate??

Those are management decisions. Therefore management is responsible. Management takes the heat. management will have to take the hit.

i say Shannon has one more season left. Whipple though has to go. Fire him before the bowl so we can recruit someone before spring practice.

I was planning to go to the Maryland and va techs games. That was $50 in parking plus tickets plus $9.00 a beer for about 10 beers for the 2 games (plus maybe a hot dog or two). Now, no way in h--ll that I am going to spend any money on this cr-p team with cr-p coaches.

I was also going to donate $1000s of dollars had they made it to the ACC ch and won it and gone to a BCS bowl. Now no way in he;;

No way that I am giving money to Sha neh neh when she puts this garbage product in the field. If anything I'll go to a heat game or Dolphin game.

F*** YOU DONNA!!!! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FOOTBALL DECISIONS ARE MADE BY NON-FOOTBALL PEOPLE. YOURE DESTROYING THIS PROGRAM AND YOU DONT EVEN CARE! youre destroying everything that put this program on the map and made it great. and pretty soon the money is going to stop flowing into the school. no recruits are going to want to play here because youre doing a terrible job of brand marketing. it used to be that every kid in the country wanted to play for The U. people loved the swagger and how fun it was to play here. there was pride in flashing The []_[]. now we're becoming as irrelevant as notre dame. shes keeping the former players out of the picture. this is bad news. the administration is just waiting for the fans to accept mediocrity! stop babying everyone involved! stop giving them free passes! stop making excuses! i really fear this is the end of the TRUE miami hurricanes football. dear god... its like no one even cares anymore...

MIAMI IS A FOOTBALL SCHOOL. AND DONNA SHALALA IS TRYING TO DESTROY THAT IDENTITY.

Bridgewater could come here but not as a QB. Oh and Junk and myself are not killing the program fools. That would be morons like yourselves, Shalala, and Shannon. Coker is just as responsible as Shannon for this mess. Plus Shannon has the talent to win, he just can't coach them up as usual. He is a Ron ZOok, ray rhodes, Tyrone Willingham and Wade Phillips prototype who is a loser. Ray Rhodes destroyed the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, Phillips is doing the same to the Cowboys and Do i really have to tell U about the losers Willingham and Zook were and are. U guys just love a loser don't you. U don't care about Miami all U guys care about is Shannon holding on to a job.
ANswer this who would want Shannon?

zook, willingham, and phillips rolled into one is actually a pretty good comparison lol

Oh bull hows that ACC championship and Shannon winning out going for U these days. Looks like egg on your face now. Your boy let u down again. Good luck with getting one win on the remaining schedule with Shannon. Keep on supporting Your loser boy. Heck after the UNC game I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. Looks like now the only one with doubt is U. where is 12-2 and that ACC title game rematch with the NOles. Take concelation in the fact they probably will not be there either.

if shalala accepts mediocre then she should also accept no one showing up for football games. people need to stop blaming the fanbase. fact is that the fans are showing the same amount of support as the amount of dedication the administration shows towards winning championships. which is none. can anyone really blame the fans? and this is coming from someone whos going to attend games regardless. but i dont blame others for showing their frustrations in different ways. its their decision to make a statement by not wasting their money on an unacceptable product. our fanbase is no more fanatical in their expectations than any other big time football schools. so stop claiming this "if you say something negative, youre not a true cane fan" bull s***. you just come across as blind, stupid, and delusional. and it makes you seem like you have ZERO football intelligence.

I don't think anyone with an IQ above 5 believes that by the fans ripping the program during the season will create an immediate change in leadership over the coming weeks. The only thing this type of destructive behavior will accomplish is making sure 4 and 5 star recruits don't sign with us.

READ THE POST ABOVE AND LEARN.....BE A FAN OR GET THE HE11 OUT OF THE WAY. YOU PEOPLE WHO CALL YOURSELVES FANS ARE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF COWARDLY QUITTERS. I WANT TO THROWUP WHEN I READ HOW SOME OF YOU PANSEY'S TALK ABOUT PAST CANES AND TEAMS......YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CANE OR WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN. THE MINUTE IT GETS TOUGH YOU WANT EVERYONE FIRED AND YOU ARE GOING TO BOYCOTT GAMES....WELL, YOU LITTLE GIRLS CAN RUN AND HIDE AS US MEN, US CANES ARE GOING TO STAY AND FIGHT!!!!!!

Obviously you love to lose. After years of doing so it must become easier to accept for U. And U think Shannon knows what it takes to win. Oh yeah he showed that against Virginia Saturday and FSU last month. Moron its been 4 years and we are still not showing progress. This team is loaded and we are still losing to teams that are beneath us. Get a life and a Drug rehab, so your brain starts working again.

Back to the drawing board but it may cost us a couple mill and that's the only way I see us getting past this mess we are in, is by starting over but at least we do have some talent on board that someone else can show you how to win with it. Shannon or none of his merry followers have a clue on coaching 101. Shannon is like Al Capone, nobody talks but him. You can't talk to his players or his coaches. He does a great job of controlling everything off the field, it's to bad he hasn't gotten the concept of how to do that on the field, WHERE THE HECK IT MATTERS!

Nope, sorry I don't understand losing or supporting a loser. U definatly got me there.
Great job.

how can you call the fans quitters? did u watch the FSU game? the players themselves quit!

i would like to believe that they will win out, and id like to think they will fight til the end, but they just havent shown me anything in the past that says that will happen. ill still support them and go to every game i can though. its just been depressing having to watch this slow motion trainwreck..

Please tell me you are not this stupid and this is all just a big act...PLEASE!

Nope can't do it. If U think I am just the only Cane saying this try looking at the prior blog from yesterday. Looks like I am just one of the many in the Majority. U Dummy

Championships is all that matters,

Out of an abundance of caution please put up a post on the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel Canes blog (address below) using your screen name from this blog just so we Canes fans can be sure you are not the racist (Sean Wilson).

I will be waiting.

Thank you

I am so sick and tired of expectations, and broken dreams.

2004- Last time UM was relevant. Was at one point in the season, 32 and #3 in the BCS. Beat both FSU and UF. That was sweet.

2005- Then the Kyle Wright nightmare began. And the real downfall of the program, when LSU gave Miami the whipping of their lives. they
came to the Peach Bowl cocky yet unprepared, disorganized, discombabulated, uncoached. The coaches knew that LSu had Joseph Addai, yet failed to prepare for him.
They still finished 9-3. At the end of the season, the entire assistant coaching staff was fired.

2006- 7-6 But at least won the bowl game against Nevada in 30 degree weather

2007- 5-7
2008- 7-6 But still beat FSU and texas A&M J12 throws ints and gets sacked against cal in the emerald bowl
2009- 9-3 J12 throws ints get sacked against Wisc

2010???? More of the same? When will this nightmare end? Common denominator from 2004-2009: No quarterback. No QB. No QB. Please God get Um a QB!

In the words of metal band slipknot...When all hope is gone!

Shannon must go.

The future of the University of Miami football program is on a train headed for something worse than its current state of mediocrity. As a UM alum, it pains me to know both the short AND long term implications of keeping Randy Shannon on as a head football coach. Unfortunately, Randy does not have the decision making capabilities during the game, on the recruiting trail, or inside the athletic office in order to give UM a chance to be a top 10 program year in and year out. Randy is a model citizen, a great defensive coordinator, and can connect well with student-athletes that come from poor neighborhoods and awful family situations. However, the fact of the matter is that some people are superior leaders and some are not. In the words of Clint Eastwood, every man needs to know his limitations. It amazes me that the school's leaders pride themselves on earning an overall ranking of 47 on the list of News and World Report college rankings and continue to improve the school academically, but they don't recognize how much of that success is tied to the success of the school's football program. The school's number of applications sky-rocketed after the success of the football program. The University of Miami was able to raise the bar regarding the type of students it accepted. If the school administration is willing to accept mediocrity for its football program, they are only hurting their own interests and the school overall. With Randy Shannon at the helm, we will become the next Duke or Maryland of the ACC. In 2035, I will tell my kids, "back in 2002, I watched Miami play for a national title," and they will laugh and say "Wow, I can't believe that, that team is awful now." Instead of remembering the glory days of nine or ten years ago, we will be talking about decades passing by and barely remembering how good we once were. If you get rid of Shannon after this season, we can start from scratch and maybe challenge for an ACC title in 3 years. Keep Shannon for the remainder of his contract, and you won't be worrying about BCS bowls folks, you will worry about actually playing in ANY bowl at all. I wish the administration would see the VALUE of paying a quality coach a great salary. The school can dictate the response of fans. If Donna Shalala would make this a REAL position, people would RESPECT it. Go Miami.

I have been going to Canes games since 1960, I have seen and been through alot with them, but I think this is the most dissapointed I have ever been I lay 30% on the players and 70% on the coaches, Man allen Baily got pancaked twice by a man on mam block he was never double teamed, Spence and Mccartney covered the wrong guy on a crucial 3rd down.numerous ileagal procedure calls and holding that stoped drives,at least I can feel good about Steven Morris. Kirby H. has a job to due he better be on the phone.

Out of an abundance of caution please put up a post on the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel Canes blog (address below) using your screen name from this blog just so we Canes fans can be sure you are not the racist (Sean Wilson).

I will be waiting.

Thank you
