Gore visits practice, injury report for Maryland

Former Hurricane Frank Gore reportedly stopped by Thursday's walkthrough practice in Coral Gables as UM prepared to face Maryland Saturday at Sun Life Stadium at noon.

Gore, who ranks second in the NFL with 1,039 all-purpose yards this season, watched most of the practice and afterwards he spent time talking with Lamar Miller and running backs coach Mike Cassano. Gore's 49ers have a bye this week before playing host to St. Louis next weekend.

The Hurricanes also released their injury report. No surprises here as quarterback Jacory Harris (concussion) and starting tailback Damien Berry (lower extremity) were listed as out along with defensive tackles Josh Holmes and Curtis Porter.

Third-string quarterback A.J. Highsmith (wrist) is listed as questionable. The Hurricanes are trying to redshirt him.

As expected, Shannon announced senior offensive lineman Joel Figueroa had season-ending surgery on a lower extremity.

why not bench RANDY SHANNON also... he is the worst on the team.. because he sucks as a head coach.. People wake up RANDY IS NOT THE man for THE U..FIRE RANDY!!!!!!!!!

Do NOT GO TO THE GAMES until this fake coach is fire....MARYLAND is going to give randy a beat down and he will come up with new excuses to give us FANS...

Go fire yourself....dumba*s...

The man won us an NC as player and he's doing his best to get another before his contract is up.

He took a big history program that want's to pay small-money for a coach.

So he can take heat from dumba*sses like you...

They won't fire Randy because he's done most of what they want from him. And we DON'T HAVE ANOTHER OPTION of a big-money coach because UM CAN'T SPEND BIG MONEY on another coach...

Some of you "Fire Randy" idiots are truly stupid... screaming the same sh*t over and over but without a f*cking clue of how the business works...

You are the like the Tea Party morons screaming about all sorts of crazy sh*t that doesn't make any sense...

maimicanes1:

I would call you a moron, but no need to insult the moron population!

Your comments are the equivilant of passing hot air over dung.

Get a life whack job!

WestCoast,
I agree with you that all this "Fire Randy" talk is non-sense and really don't represent true 'Canes fans, but you have to admit, something is wrong. We get the players that other major programs are recruiting (Henderson, Miller, Armstrong) and yet we lose to a bottom feeder like VA. I was at that game and all the VA fans were saying to me "Please don't kill us today" and what did we do, attempt to pass the ball on a team who ranks near the bottom of D1 football. With talent level we have, there is NO WAY we should have lost to them or FSU.
So that leaves us to focus on coaching. Why are we not playing to our strengths (running the ball, throwing short to intermediate routes) instead of going for the jugular? Why not blitz more frequently to force offenses to adjust to us, vs us to them? Something is off with our 'boys. Maryland is already saying a "win against Miami would do wonders for our program and we are catching them at the right time."
I can not (nor will I) say we need to fire Randy, that would be cutting our noses off to spite our face. But we DO need to change our philosophy in some fashion to regain confidence.

Hey West...the only dumbass here is you for accepting mediocrity. And the argument that we don't have any money is bs. Schiano was offered 2 mil to take over after Choker 4 yrs ago. Nice try. Of course that along with the fact he won a Nc as a player is completely irrelevant in regards to Radio Shannon aka 26-20. Yea, you read that right. 26-20. His record is the ONLY thing that matters and he has failed miserably. Fire Radio immediately before we come even more irrelevant.

I have 20 bucks that says they look a lot better sat. Players respond to Morris and he responds to them. He is more of a leader than jacory and is only a freshman. Now we need someone to step up on D.See ya'll there

cant wait till saturday, true canes r waiting to watch the next QB at the U. win it for shannon n your self Mr. Stephenson Morris, sick of all u non CANES.

@sidcane: ease up on jacory.... gore came by school once.

OK, i am sorry for calling anyone names...i respect all other Canes fans for having fair disappointment in the team right now.

But my point is not that we can't criticize Randy. My point is show some RESPECT when you criticize a former Cane Champion and our current kids.

I AM DISAPPOINTED LIKE HELL!! We were supposed to compete for a top 10 finish this year!!!!

And this team looks more shaky as the year goes on and it's not just from injuries. I question their toughness and maturity.

I KNEW THAT J12 was out weakspot-- i've been praying all along that nobody hits him hard as he seems EXTREMELY FRAGILE as a football player. It's almost as if he was meant to be a basketball player and not a footballer.

MY REAL POINT OF ALL MY POSTS IS TO REMIND PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT THE COACH AND TEAM WITH SOME LEVEL OF RESPECT FOR OUR TEAM WHEN YOU CRITICIZE THEM

Heather Dinich: I had an interesting conversation with Randy Shannon yesterday. Check the blog tomorrow for more on that.

Fellas, GT just went up 13-0 on VT! Hate to be cheering from them, but it's part of our only shot at getting to ACC title game.

Go GT!!!!!

I'd give up my left nut to have us in the ACC title game against FSU !!!!

I want revenge damn it!!!

Keep up the great work my friend.

Now that I think about it...West Coast Cane - are you going to the game? We have Cosmo Martini's and footlongs at our tale-gate before the game. You are more the welcome to stop by and intro yourself. We are in section 69

WestCoastCane:

As I mentioned in my earlier post...the psychopath Gator idiot posted the tailgate invitation.

This guy is flatout mentally ill!

There's an ACC title game?

Dave Hyde just wrote the worst article ever where he blames Whipple for our record.

It's Whipple's fault our defense can't stop anybody? Randy Shannon is the head coach, if he doesn't like a play, he can override it. That's assuming he's awake on the sideline and/or knows anything about football.

ONE WIN AND GATOR ARROGANCE RETURNS

By: Will Ramsey

Gainesville, FL—After playing a game that was basically given to the Florida Gators by the not so talented Georgia Bulldogs the Gator egotism is back and as ugly as ever.

During a season where the 5 star recruits have played like walk-ons from a disbanded program it took the indefensible reinstatement of Chris Rainey, the Gator who threatened to kill a girl, to squeak by Georgia in overtime. This win will go down with a big yawn and the college football world collectively saying; so what!

Yet, the Gators with their unmatched arrest record and unparalleled lack of response to these arrests by the Florida administration are back to having a bigger bark than bite. Just like the over hyping of recruits who we now know are 1 star players not 5 star, the Gator players and coaches are telling anyone who will listen (and very few are in fact listening) how great they are and their losses this year were flukes. Really?

Anyhow, the Gator act has grow tiresome and recruits and their parents are no longer falling for Urban Meyer’s snake oil salesmanship and are looking hard at programs such as the University of Miami and the Florida State Seminoles. One parent said; I simply don’t want my son exposed to that type of environment. I am concerned I could be turning over a good kid to that Gator crowd and by the time they are done with him I will be returned a convicted felon. Thanks, but no thanks!

Rumors of an ever expanding NCAA investigation persist making many wonder if Meyer will be the next Pete Carroll and using the words of LeBron James, take his talents to the Jacksonville Jaguars before the program collapses.

Despite the Gator’s collapse this season, those in the know believe that this season will be looked back on as a great year versus what the future brought. In other words…Gator’s, your 15 minutes of fame is up!

Let's help Morris on Saturday and install some form of the "Wildcat Formation".

Dave Hyde wrote a fair and balanced article in the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel...give it a read when you get a chance.

In all fashion, this was the year for the rejuvenation of the U. We have seen the good and the bad this year with arguably the best talent in college football 2day. To sum up the U in one word is INCONSISTENCE! Is it the players or coaches? I feel as though it is the coaching staff. We do not as one blogger (westcoast) pointed out, we don't have a short to medium passing game. We cannot set up the running game even with all the future 1st rounders up front. Yes, we can convince ESPN to showcase us, but are going to show up? Our defense is the best talent wise in the country, but yet we dont blitz to make the offense adjust to us. If you look at the games we lost, we were out coached or J12 turned the ball over and put our defense in a precarious position to defend.

ooster:

C'mon man--you've got a guy directing racial hate at the black players on the team you love and you get mad at someone defending our players against this type of hate?

I'm not lecturing, at least I'm trying not to lecture, but if you love a team and they've lost every game and some low-life starts calling your players stupid and subhuman becuase they are black then that's the very moment that the win/loss record become irrelevant and we all come together to slam this hater.

.

Hmmmm let's see ... The World's most successful rapper, Eminem, a white skinned man, that has the vocabulary of a 9th. grader and cannot put a sentance together without multiple grammatical errors ... The World's most successful golfer, Tiger Woods, a brown skinned man, that could probably teach post grad English Lit. So, I ask you Cane Fan, oh mighty purveyor of all things race, does that in fact make me a racist or simply an unbiased human being stating the obvious truth, minus any racial malice or bigotry what so ever ?

And yes, you are lecturing and losing the debate handley. Some people regardless of race, simply do not speak the English language with proper diction and enunciation. Randy and Michael(although Irvin corrects himself from time to time) are constantly victoms of that fact. And as a CEO of a College, higher education's Football program and a T.V./radio announcer and talk show host, those traits do not bode well for either in those professions. That's not racist, and if either tried to become ESPN talking heads, they both wouldn't make it through the first 2 minutes of their monolouges before being told, "thankyou very much, we'll be in touch." Would that make the decision makers at ESPN racist ?

Bottom line, when Shannon and Irvin talk, it husts the ears, unless of course it's the ears of someone else that speaks in the same fashion.

"C'mon man" How about U ?

Holy Christ !!! Chick drinks, phallic food and 15K in the stands at high noon on ESPN Z .

Yup, sounds like a Cane Thang fo sho

Hopefully Miami was paying attention to what Va Tech did tonight. THEY BEAT A TEAM THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BEAT. Only hope now is for UNC to help us and I wouldn't count on that.

Aaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeee Va. Tech wins ... Tell us all about how duh U can still get to the ACC Championship game if the Hokies plane gets fogged in, they can't make the trip to Miami and have to forfeit the game clueless cane fans.

IT'S OVA ... AGAIN x's 7

ooooooppppssssss ... looks like u get to keep ur baby nuts long enough for them to drop.

It is so easy and fun to put the gator racist on tilt. He flipped out over the posting of the article on the cowardly gators.

Sorry gator racist...the Canes dominance over your all girls football team in their pretty blue and orange costumes continues.

But look on the brightside, anytime you want to visit your football players for autographs they are no further away than Alachua County Jail. 35 felony arrests and counting...a proud history of cheating, losing and cowardice...the florida gators!

West Coast Cane I figured you were the typical liberal idiot. What are you from California? The same morons who elected Barbara Boxer again! First off you don't know s*** about the inner workings of the program. This myth about the university not having the money was created by individuals like you who are completely ignorant to what is going on. The bottom line is there is money it's just that Donna doesn't want to spend it on the football program. However there are many trustees who are putting tremendous pressure on her and she will eventually relent to that pressure and fire shannon and it is going to happen after this season especially if we lose a few more games. So get your facts straight you moron and get the hell off this board and go find some liberal affirmative action loving board to go post on. Randy is a joke and so are you!!!

Left coast lame, lemme guess, u voted for Boxer right? 150 billion in debt.

please tell me another bedtime fantasy story about how the Mighty Gators will get the death penalty again couch u .

great post Dallas Cane, tell it like it is bro.

We may actually win this game since Morris is starting at QB. No more lame ducks flying around for teams to pick off as long as he is in the game. Oh man I forgot Shannon is still head coach. There goes that win.

Dallas Cane 25:

You know not what you speak of...Randy will NOT be fired after this season and most probably not after next season

A trustee has already gone public, no rumors, no fan opinins, a trustee gave an interview where he clearly stated that if Randy can post 8 win seasons and keep the program clean Randy and Donna has his full support. No equivocation, no dancing around the answer, the guy was crystal clear that Randy is not going anywhere if he can consistently post 8 wins.

Yet, even if he doesn't acieve 8 wins this year he's going n-o-w-h-e-r-e! He will not be fired, even if he does not win another game this season.

Like it or not we Canes fans have to accept reality. This daily screaming to fire Randy will only insure uncertainty for the program that will run off recruits, which will make rebuilding the program another 5 year project.

I know this sounds like message board nonsense, but I will take any and all action (bets) by people who say Randy will be fired at the end of this season.

RANDY SHANNON WILL BE THE HEAD COACH OF THE MIAMI HURRICANES FOOTBALL TEAM FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 15 MONTHS!!!

Miami Hurricanes: Breaking Up With Shannon Is Hard, but There's a Better Option ...

At some point you run out of excuses. Sooner or later there is no justification.

The time has come for Head Coach Randy Shannon to be either demoted or released from his contract. Since the former is usually not an option, you'd expect for the Miami Athletic Department to go with the latter.

After all, football excellence used to be synonymous with Hurricanes, and that just hasn't been the case under the current regime.

Shannon has allowed Miami to fail too many times. Under his watch the Hurricanes have been blown out more than once per season, have looked horrible in big games and have underperformed against inferior opponents on a regular basis.

Miami has gone 26-20 in his four seasons. They're 14-15 in the ACC, and haven't sniffed an ACC Conference Championship or a BCS Bowl. They looked awful and got beat in the two mediocre bowls they did get invited to.

Thus it seems time for the program to move in a different direction, to bring in someone that could bring in better results faster. The same way Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis and Larry Coker all did.

Davis didn't win a title, but he should have been playing for a national title in his last season at Miami. He also stocked the team with talent, which Coker rode to two championship games.

Who do you want as Miami's coach?
Randy Shannon
Jon Gruden
Butch Davis
Someone Else
Submit Vote vote to see results It's hard to want to fire Randy. He's a true Hurricane who won a title back in 1987. Furthermore he's a local product. He went to Norland High before attending UM.

Not just is he a native, he's also a great "feel-good story."

Shannon's father was murdered when he was ten. He lost twin brothers and a sister to drugs and AIDS. He overcame huge odds just to be the person he is today. That makes him a great role model for young men and prospective student athletes.

Randy has established a disciplined and academically successful program. Miami is second only to Stanford when it comes to graduating football players the last couple seasons. The players have also managed to stay out of trouble, which is contrary to what typical fans expect from the U.

Miami for the most part is squeaky clean right now and are trying to win the right way. But that's the problem, they're only achieving half of that equation. While the players are staying in line, they're not doing enough on Saturdays.

Kirby Hocutt has to be cringing at that four-year contract extension they gave Shannon this past offseason. Still, boosters, former players, alumni and fans may not allow him and the notoriously penny-pinching athletic department to just stand pat.

The greatest possible scenario would be to lure Jon Gruden to be the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, then have Shannon stay to coach out his contract as a Defensive Coordinator. This will never happen, but it'd be great for Hurricane fans in regards to recruiting and on-field results.

Can you imagine Chucky and the Canes? It's a match made in football heaven. ESPN would make them the new coverage darlings.

Then picture Gruden going into a young man's living room. They know who he is from Monday Night Football, and now he's on their couch. He's wearing that Super Bowl ring, giving that intense glare as he pitches the five-star recruit.

He's asking them to come down to a beautiful, private campus nestled in an upper-class community. This school has great academics, and the football program has a meritorious success rate. You have small class sizes when it comes to the books, and a long list of alumni that are NFL stars who still come back to the school to help you on the field.

You'd be playing for an exciting and respected coach. You'd get to play home games in an NFL stadium with college football's largest high-definition screen. It's not a very hard sell, especially for someone like Gruden.

He is the one guy capable of not losing any potential recruits while still enticing others and improving the team's exposure and performance.

It's time for a fresh start in Miami. Time to get a young renegade style mad-man. You know, just like Jimmy Johnson was. That's what the Hurricanes would get in Gruden. He'd have that same fire and ability to motivate his team. Only difference is he's far more polished and experienced than JJ was.

There's no way Gruden would get blown out seven times in four seasons like Randy has. He would tear all those kids apart if they quit on him like they have Shannon.

This won't be a very easy sell but it's not impossible either. Gruden always wanted to be the Notre Dame coach and still might be one day. For now, though, Miami may be able to benefit form a perfect storm of circumstances.

He's already been out of coaching a couple seasons and it's doubtful he wants to stay out too long. He can always go back to the booth after his coaching days.

Gruden likes living in Florida. He currently resides in the Tampa area. A move to Miami or just traveling to Coral Gables for work would be feasible and easy.

The Hurricanes offer him a marquee team that already has plenty of talent and will only get more with him on board. Lastly, he could spend four to five years at Miami, win a couple titles and then use it as a spring board for any job he may want.

He would join the very exclusive club of coaches that have won an NCAA National Title and a Super Bowl.

Former Hurricane players need to start whispering in his ears. The athletic department needs to cough up the cash. They'll more than make it up in increased attendance, exposure and following. Donna Shalala needs to turn her back on the football program and let them be Hurricanes instead of spring showers.

I know it's only early November, but if Hurricane fans could get one early Christmas gift, please let it be Jon Gruden as our next Head Coach. Doors always open for you to be an assistant, Randy, so you can always come home if you like.

It's time for Hurricane football to be dominant and relevant once again.

so basically what you're saying is we need to just accept that we will be nothing more a perennial 8/9 win team? um, no thanks. i want my team to be the greatest. i will not just come to terms with a mediocre reality...

I don't like our chances against either Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech.

Posted by: Vegas Cane

What good are recruits if we can't win? Recruits watch us get smoked on national TV every 2 weeks. And listening to Randy Shannon speak is just painful.

Do you actually think any recruits watched the Virginia game and decided the wanted to be at the U?

Posted by: WestCoastCane

I understand how the business works, when you're team is much more talented, you should win. Unless your coach is a moron...see Virginia v. Miami.

Shannon will probably retain his job, but we don't have to like it.

Why does Shannon even bother speaking to the media. It's like torture listening to him make excuses.

Well GA Tech couldn't do it. Very disappointing. Maybe North Carolia can do it or all hope is gone for thing that we were pre season picked by alot of people to win. I hope Frank was able to spark a fire like Rolle did.

Shannon needs help! From where/who I don't know, but he needs help. I can only hope HE realizes that and knows where to find it. Otherwise the program won't improve in the near future. I do believe he's trying his best.

With GaTech losing last night our season is over

VaTech will NEVER lose to NC

Making our game MEANINGLESS with VaTech for the ACC regardless of the income

Champs Sports Bowl here we come!! YIPPEE!!

As Bill Paxton said in Aliens 'GAME OVER"!!

Well have a little faith VA Tech still has one more game before Miami.

It is sooooo easy to identify the real fans of the 'U' vs the pretenders. These are our kids laying it on the field for the 'U', the fans and the community. Get your butts out to the game and support them, cheer them and thank the 'U' for having college football in our community. We real fans go to the games rain or shine. I've been to the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl; the Sugar Bowl; the Citrus Bowl, etc. Yea sometimes we get crazy and party like maniacs and sometimes we just take a deep breath and look forward to next year. But one thing is for sure and that is the game goes on.
