Making sense of Gruden, UM coaching search

This weekend was only the first couple days in what will probably be a stretch of a long days and nights for reporters covering the Miami Hurricanes. So, please bear with us.

With all of the reporting and rumors to chase, I didn't get a chance to come back and share some thoughts on what I've been hearing and thinking in the aftermath of the firing of Randy Shannon and the coaching search. Here are a few things on my mind:

Gruden > From the get-go, all of this Jon Gruden talk (heard it last week) seemed like a stretch to me. Why would a coach who has won a Super Bowl, has a Monday Night Football gig and potentially a lot of big-time offers to get back into coaching at the NFL level take a college job when he hasn't coached at that level since 1991? But the reporting -- and tweeting -- we've done since yesterday on what we were hearing is legit.

There were credible sources telling us (not only me) that Gruden and UM have had mutual interest for awhile and that money and a framework of a deal has already been discussed. A few other sources were saying it was done and a press conference was already in the works for Monday. Obviously, the latter didn't happen. No credible sources or officials at UM confirmed it. In fact, other sources -- as the night went on -- began spinning the story in the other direction. So, we didn't write a story saying that. But I strongly believe from what I heard, Gruden and Miami have been talking for awhile (before Shannon was fired) and numbers of a potential deal have been exchanged.

UM was -- and probably still is -- holding out hope they can land their dream candidate. If they do, it's because they go all-in and meet all of Gruden's demands (expensive staff, etc) as former Cane Dan Morgan told me Sunday morning. As for his "denial" on ESPN? There have been a lot of coaches who have left for jobs making similar denials and telling their current bosses what they want to hear as they negotiate.

For Gruden, Miami is attractive on several fronts. He can pull a Pete Carroll and go back to coaching at a level where the head coaches are the real superstars. And, he would be given full control of football operations -- bring in people like his brother if he wants and friends. The question is will Miami really pony up all that cash for the big prize? If UM is smart, it will. The Canes have already done the research of the economic impact Gruden would have in terms of season ticket sales. Plus, there is the money donors and others have promised should UM snag a huge fish like Gruden. If UM wants to be relevant right away and "hire the best coach to take them to the pinnacle of college football" as Kirby Hocutt said, Gruden is that guy.

The most likely scenario -- in the end -- is UM ends up landing a lesser high-profile coach than Gruden, who can pretty much choose wherever he wants to go. But I'd still hold out hope over the next 48 hours. If it doesn't happen by then, UM will probably move on. As I said earlier, I think the talks with Gruden have been going on for weeks. The money and particulars is what has been discussed over the last 24 hours (since Shannon was fired).

Dan Mullen > So who else is UM really looking at? Here is who I believe based on what credible sources have told me and other reporters here at The Herald who have covered UM in the past: Montreal Alouette's coach Marc Trestman (former UM offensive coordinator); Georgia's Mark Richt; former USF coach Jim Leavitt; Texas Tech's Tommy Tuberville (he was the hot name last year for UM); Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen; and UConn's Randy Edsall

Yes, Richt said Sunday he has no interest in leaving Georgia. But he just had a 6-6 season. He played at UM and may be able to be sold on the come home and be a hero scenario. And if UM is really going to pony up big cash -- we heard upwards of $3 million per for a coach it really wants -- then why wouldn't he at least listen?

To me, the most intriguing potential candidates are Mullen and Edsall.

Mullen is making $1.2 million at Mississippi State through 2013. He's 38 years old, hungry and has quickly turned Mississippi State into a respectable program in a tough SEC West.

Edsall, 52, has been at UConn since 1999 and has made a basketball school excited about its football program. He's only 69-69, but the Huskies have been really competitive without much of a recruiting base. They shared the Big East title in 2007. Edsall makes $1.3 million a year.

> I know some people are wondering about TCU's Gary Patterson, Boise State's Chris Petersen as well as former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

I just think those are long shots at this point -- Petersen and Patterson especially since they're teams have obviously done so well and are ranked high in the BCS. But I wouldn't be surprised to see UM go after the them if given a warm reception. I've heard Leach's name from a few sources. But my gut tells me his ugly departure from Texas Tech has him a little tainted and UM probably wouldn't go after him unless they completely strike out with others.

> As for Shannon, I truly believe the decision to fire him was probably made after UM's losses to Florida State and Virginia. The Hurricanes became irrelevant after the Cavaliers loss and from all indications, that's when Hocutt began to start looking into replacements.

Richt is a religious dude, so I'm betting that it wouldn't work.

HOW BOUT BRINGING BACK JIMMY JOHNSON TO COACH AND BRING IN MICHAEL IRVIN TO COACH THE WIDE RECEIVERS

------------------------

And bring Edgerrin James to coach RBs and Ken Dorsey to coach QBs and maybe Ray Lewis will just want to retire and coach the LBS?

You're an idiot.

Has there been any mention of Harbaugh as a candidate? Besides Grudan, this is a guy that can win at a school focused on academics AND winning football.

Trestman???? A guy that has ended up in the CFL??? I think I would rather keep Randy. Don't know to me Trestman has bounced around to much and didn't even last as OC at NC. ST.
Is that really the marquee guy we are looking for?

You're surprised that Harbaugh has not been mentioned? Really? What in the world makes you think that he would want to leave his Top 5 team to coach Miami? Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you morons? If anything he would leave for Michigan but not even that because his next coaching job might be in the NFL.

marc trestmen should be the guy....proven winner and miami guy...

I think we should go after:

Chip Kelly
Gene Chizik
Jim Tressel

They WOULD leave their programs in a heartbeat for the opportunity to coach at The U. The history is rich with tradition and the stadium rocks every home game!!!

i would love to see Gruden on the sidelines. i hate to say it but we need someone with star power. Richt has star power and UM affiliation but i dont know that he'd be good at Miami,.. i mean his record this past year was worse than ours... isn't that a step backward? Mullen doesnt have the star power, but i think he'd be great for the job other than that. Patterson if for some miracle we could lure him away would be excellent, but, seriously doubt that would happen. Edsall i would not want to see there, Leach, hell no, and to that point no coach that runs a nonprostyle offense. what the U needs to do is get us a stadium back, Eff sunlife. how do we host the Orange Bowl and not have an Orange Bowl to host it in,.... BS.

There is one clear choice that makes sense. Marc Trestman. He is an alumni, former college quarterback, coached Kosar in 83, had numerous assistant coaching jobs and finally got a breat to be head coach with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. What did he do? In 3 years he went to 3 straight championship games, winning the last 2. He is not just a name; he is the real deal, on the rise and he will go somewhere in college or the pros. If the UM brass is smart, they will reach out to him immediately.

To be honest I wouldn't be suprised if under different leadership Jacory turned into a real good QB. If you hearing about all the ex-canes that put in time under Shannon, these guys are getting to the NFL without even knowing how to watch game film. If they could go all four years without knowing how to prepare for a game, I'm sure there is some untapped potential in our current group. So let's get a coach who can bring that out quickly!

"The program has gone from being one of the most dominant from the 1980s to early 2000s to a nonfactor on the national landscape. This isn't a national powerhouse anymore. It's not even a Top 25 program anymore. Know what kind of football program it is? It's Kentucky. It's Pitt. It's Arizona. A little better than mediocre. Just good enough to get an invite to some dinky bowl game such as the Sun Bowl or Champs Sports Bowl."

JSKINNY: YES IT IS YOUR FAULT!!

36 PICS IN 3 YEARS SUCKS DUMBASS, THATS WHY SHANNON IS GONE!!

GRUDEN, EDSALL OR MULLEN PLEASE!!

BUTCH, LEAVITT AND LEACH HAVE TOO MUCH BAGGAGE FROM THE NCAA TO BRING HERE!

YES, DEFINITELY. THEY WOULD FLY DOWN BUT FIRST STOP OVER IN GAINESVILLE AND PUKE AND DUMP ON THE 50 YARD LINE.

here we go with the national championship in 2011 talk...we don't have a head coach yet lol...some of you fans are really really really crazy

YES, DEFINITELY. THEY WOULD FLY DOWN BUT FIRST STOP OVER IN GAINESVILLE AND PUKE AND DUMP ON THE 50 YARD LINE

That would probably sell more tix then a Cane game

Time to bring the rings back to MIAMI

Jacory? The kid cries over a Tweet, can you imagine Gruden chewing him out on the sideline!

How about Harbaugh from Stanford?

DI hope the arrogant UM people are ready for the backlash that comes with firing a coach who had great ties in the inner city. Ready for this Bridgewater-LSU, Perryman-FSU or Bama, Rogers-LSU, Cadillac-Auburn or Bama, Duke Johnson will decomit so will Keith Brown. I'm glad that's what happens when local coaches feel like Randy was short changed. I was a real season ticket holder not like none of you computer geeks who sit here and never attend games. I want to see who you blame now that Randy's gone. O another thing I heard from a source today Urban contacted Randy about his def. Cordinator job. How wonderful it would be for Randy to shut down the U. Yeah hire Jim Levitz or whatever his name is he couldn't win anything at usf. I'm done with UM and so are the other African American coaches in the inner city.

Gruden is not going to happen girls.

Why isn't Whipple Head Coach for the game, isn't he the assistant head coach?

The list should only have 3 names on it; 1. Chris Peterson, 2. Mike Leach and 3. Gary Patterson.

This is The U and all three would be rubbing out to get the chance to come to the best college ball program in the nation.

Why would any program what Gruden? All you have to do is look at Texas LAME with Sherman or ND with Charlie "Front Butt" Wiess. For every Pete Carrol there are twenty of these sub-human NFL coaches who cant relate to the 18-21 year old college player.

Bottom line is we'd DOMINATE with any of the three (Perterson, Leach or Patterson) and i only hope Hocutt thinks about this long and hard and brings in a winner!

Go Canes!

NC in 2011!!!!!!!!!

We are back!!!!!!!!!!

unless it's cold

That's the most racist comment today.

What race are the head coaches of all those wonderful schools you named? Have they ever had black head coaches?

Whipple has to be out. He was asst head coach and they didn't make him interim coach. That's like pimp slapping him at the 50 yard line.

He's out and he deserves to be out.

Je te plumerai la tete?

Je te plumerai la tete.

Et la tete?

Et la tete.

Alouette?

Alouette.

OOOOOOOOOO

Is UM allowed to talk to Butch Davis or Tommy Tupperware before their seasons end?

Mike Stoops would fit the bill perfectly.

Can you imagine the team he could field recruiting South Florida instead of Arizona?

Canesjunkie, that is why I was asking. Seemed off to me.

Some other thoughts on Gruden, and don't get me wrong, I see the upside to this guy in the buzz, excitement, legitimacy he would bring to the program. Perhaps more importantly, he'd bring a cache and an ego that would require Shalala to be much more hands off with the program. DO NOT underestimate the importance of that!

Bu back to Gruden's record as a HC in the NFL. First off, I personally give Gruden a lot of credit for what Rich Gannon was able to do for a few years there. That was impressive. I also agree that he deserves some credit for helping to build the Raiders into a playoff team. On the other hand, did he do that by himself? No. And did he build the Bucs into a playoff team? No. And he did leave the Bucs in MUCH worse shape than he found them.

My issues with Gruden I am coming to realize are also some of his biggest assets when it comes to a college football coach. The guy is arrogant and he comes with a lot of hype and buzz. I can't stand him on MNF and I think he is higly overrated. But at the same time, that same self-promoting arrogance seems to work quite well in CFB these days (see Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, etc.).

Bottom line, Gruden is not as good as his hype and there are far better candidates out there who have proven themselves in the college game and need only to move to a bigger program to take that next step (Peterson, Patterson). That said, if we can't lure those guys, Gruden, Mullen or Tuberville would do pretty nicely.

JMO

Still no one mentions Utah's coach!! 58-19 and 6-0 and bowl games! and Whooped Alabama in one of them!! he is only getting paid 1.2 million a year!! Get him, He is a winner!

Gruden IS NOT COMING to Da U Cane Clucks !!!

This is The U and all three would be rubbing out to get the chance to come to the best college ball program in the nation.

News flash U typical Cane Tard. Duh U ain't even in the Top-20 College football programs.

Randy wasnt fired because he was black. HE WAS FIRED BECAUSE HE LOST TO USF, UVA and FSU! Black people love pulling the race card. That being said. Good luck Randy Shannon thank you for the talent you brang in.

yes john gurden . would be the best for how long to he leaves to go to the NFL .then miami will be back to nothing again,i sad it before who rebuilt miami before dum bow coker ran it in the ground. buch davis. was in the NFL will never go back is acane at heart will give u 7 plus years we all knows he do.it took rs. 4 years to beat him with half his team gone. the best of the best the man is the one.uconn. coach we may as well call rs, back. all joke

My concern with Mullen is that hokey, high school offense he runs...just like his mentor, Urban Meyer.

If you bring that scheme down to Miami the talented kids (offensive players) that come here as they have in the past with dreams of the NFL due to our offensive philosophies will most probably opt to join Jimbo Fisher at FSU.

To me Gruden is the must have homerun that we are in need of. Brilliant offensive mind that absolutely loves the game. The kind of fire he exhibits tends to fall on deaf ears more often than not in the NFL with the egos of the players. Perhaps he grew tired of that and wants to coach kids that will pay full attention, respect him and not act a fool and scream at him on the sidelines like Keyshawn. Dont even talk about recruiting, because prospects would flock to Miami. He would energize the program on all levels. Hopefully its true but beyond that I have to say NO LEACH, LEAVITT, RICHT, TUBBERVILLE,etc. BRING GRUDEN!!

My Realistic Miami Coaching Considerations:

John Gruden: Instant Name recognition
Concern: Lack of Interest after a year or two.

Tommy Tuberville: Good Solid College Coach.
Concern: Maybe a year too late.

Butch Davis: V.Good College Coach, excellent recruiter. Concern: Past difficulty in closing a contract with the Canes in the past.

Dan Mullen: He's hungry, he has a proven success record at Miss. State. I believe he would excell at Miami.
Concern: Name recogniton with recruiting top high school players.

Randy Edsall: He's done well at Conn., a small football school.
Concern; He's from Penn. and has little contact power in the southeast.

Others: Jim Leavitt,, no way,, bad carma, a hot head and bad rep. with some players.
Jim Peterson; Great Coach but doubt he would move to Miami.
Marc Trestman; No dynamism to attract players.
My two top choices; Butch Davis or Dan Mullen.

Good Luck Canes !!!!!!!!

We would be very fortunate to get Gruden, he would bring a ton of media attention and put people in the seats. The others on the list are fine except Leavitt, and Venables - zero interest in them, zilch. For those around since the early 80's or before, not many people liked the Jimmy Johnson hire - he earned our respect with wins and a ring, same for Ericson after JJ wowed us. Reality is the administration should do everything thing they can to get Gruden (everything Warren Sapp), that is a game changer. That would be a great hire, as his reputation from ESPN has grown since he left the field. At least the players would know how to watch and learn from watching game film. Getting a top shelf QB would be a breeze with Gruden, they will run to him. Hope it happens, but I am sure we will find a great fit if it does not. Go Canes.

Episode 3

Coaching search at the U.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPe4KHfDDHQ

Man we seriously got to throw 4 mil his way for him to come to us. We got to get him. The pressure is more on Shala and the AD now because of the non bowl wins and the so-so records not to mention not making it to the ACC championship. I hope he want selling us U fans, the boosters, and the alumni bulsht behind that podieum about throwing money out and getting the right coach. Another important thing is they better not hire a coach that have baggage and had violation. That will really make the u fans, boosters and alumni heated if he have a so-so record. The pressure will be on the next coach to as far as keeping kids out of trouble, keeping academics up, winning, motavting the kids when they run out of that tunnel, blah blah blah. U fans trust me we cannot get a below average name. This is a must land. The AD and the Prez put alot of pressure on themselves. The fans will be more upset than when we were keeping RS around. You have to throw some money out there. You thought we were mad that we did not get rid of RS earlier. Wait til we don't land a big name and start winning. Holcutt and Shala will get more hate mail and email. U fans we got to really think about this. Shannon did a excellent job with keeping guys out of trouble and keeping there grades up and graduation. Remember the great recruiting class of 2008. They are seniors now. We have a bunch of talent and experience players coming back next yr. Shanon have left a great situation for next yr. Man if we get a coach coming in there with a 9-3 record for the next two years itsnot going to be good with a so-so coach.

Yeah Yeah for the haters going to say we will not
get Gtuden. I hear you but this is not for you.

My list: Gruden, Paterson, Peterson, Dan Mullen, Dave Wanstat-Yes I said him, Bill Belchek, Randy Esdall

A big NO to Jim Leavitt. Wrong guy. The rest of the realistic candidates mentioned in all the comments are worth pursuing.

Here' hoping the selection makes a big splash.
We need it.Go Canes!

KIRBY HOLCUTT THE CLOCK IS TICKING ON YOU YOU BUDDY...WHERES THE BIG NAME?..IF THE DECISION WAS MADE BEFORE SATURDAY'S GAME THEN DELIVER US THE BIG NAME..IT'S GRUDEN OR BUST...AND GROW UP AT STOP CALLING US THE "U"..THAT"S FOR FANS..NOT THE AD..AND SINCE YOU WON SO MUCH DURING YOUR YEARS AT K STATE..LED UM TO THAT SAME SUCCESS..OR LACK OF IT

Dan Mullen? I'm not excited about the jump pass making it's way down here.

Please whatever we do, do not hire Tommy Tuberville. He sucked at Auburn and has Texas Tech sucking this year. Not big on Leavitt because he just looks like a nut. I would rather have Mike Leach over these two. He has that Jimmy johnson attitude that salutes U with 2 middle fingers and puts 50 up on U at the same time. But these guys are all better

Jon Gruden
Jim Harbaugh
Chris Peterson
Gary Patterson
Brady Hoke

Petrino would be a great fit as well

ITs not Gruden or bust, dummy. Its hire the best guy for the job. If gruden doesn't come its not the end of the world since there are alot of good young coaches out there that would want to win a National title here. I like Holcutt in that he seems brash and ambitious, something that has been lacking around here for lets say a decade.

Good stuff Manny. Here is my wish list. Tell me what UUU think.

1.Randy Edsall= The guy can flat out coach plus run run a pro style offense

2.Mike Mularkey= Great offensive mind and play caller also run a pro style offense

3.Dirk Koetter= Great offensive mind. pro style

4.Mike Leach= Kinda weird but can UUU imagine the athletes in Dade and Broward in Leach's system. That's scary

5.Jeff Jagozydski= Good offensive mind runs a pro style offense and know the ACC. He took BC to the conference championship game.
