Morgan: Unless UM wins ACC, 2010 a failure

The Miami Hurricanes are in a tough spot heading into Saturday's showdown with 14th-ranked Virginia Tech. Even if the Canes beat the Hokies, they still need Virginia Tech to lose to Virginia a week from Saturday to earn a ticket to the ACC Championship game.

Dan Morgan Before the season even got underway, most UM fans felt the season would be a disappointment if the Hurricanes didn't at least play in the ACC title game or reach a BCS Bowl game. But without a win Saturday and some help from the 4-6 Cavaliers, UM will fall short of that goal.

So here's the question: What if UM wins out? What if the Canes beat Virginia Tech, beat USF and beats the Gators (or another SEC school) in the Chick-Fil-A bowl (their likely destination should they win out)? Would a 10-3 record and potential Top 15 finish in the rankings satisfy Canes Nation?

One person it wouldn't satisfy is former Hurricane and WQAM radio personality Dan Morgan.  "I wouldn't be happy with it at all," Morgan said. "I came into this season with high expectations. The school and the coaches and players and media had high expectations for this team. I know there were a lot of people who thought we could beat a Florida State and Ohio State. That's where my frustration comes from.

"It's funny. Everybody acts now like there weren't high expectations for this year. But there were. You can't forget about that. Just because we lost those games doesn't mean the expectations aren't as high anymore. If we don't win the ACC, then this season absolutely is a failure. That's what you play for at the University of Miami -- to win championships, ACC championships and not go to these no-name bowl games. We're not a normal school. We're not UCF, South Florida or FIU. We're the University of Miami and the expectations are always going to be high."

Morgan, in his first year with WQAM, has said on the radio plenty of times this season he isn't sure if UM coach Randy Shannon is the right person to lead the program. And he said he'll continue to feel that way, unless he sees the team take some major steps forward.

"They haven't even won a bowl game under him," Morgan said. "How many years do you give somebody to get the job done? I don't know. If you aren't winning the smallest bowl games, what makes you think your going to win next year? We're getting beat handily and we aren't beating good teams. It's frustrating. I don't want to go on there and say so-and-so should get fired. I've got nothing against Randy or anybody. But you have to start beating good teams."

The Hurricanes haven't beaten a ranked opponent since it knocked off Oklahoma 21-20 last October. They've lost three in a row to ranked teams -- Wisconsin, Ohio State and Florida State -- and are only 4-8 against ranked teams under Shannon. But a win Saturday and two more wins after that (that would be five wins in a row to close the season) would go a long way in my eyes of showing at least some improvement.

So, how would you feel if Miami finished 10-3, but didn't make it to a BCS Bowl game?

A FEW MORE TIDBITS...

> If there's one thing I love about Morgan as analyst it is his brutal honesty. And he makes no apologies for it.

"I have thick skin," said Morgan, who did some radio in Carolina before moving back home to South Florida. "I've had that since my playing days. I had people talk about me on the radio, rip me for this and that. People don't like reality sometimes and the truth. I do what I'm paid to do, speak my mind and give my opinion. Everybody isn't going to always agree with me. Some will. But everybody has their own opinion. I love doing the radio thing. It's definitely tough talking about your own school. But I'm paid by a radio station to give my opinion and if something isn't good I can't just sit there and act like it's good."

Two weeks ago, after the Hurricanes were beaten by Virginia, Morgan and WPLG Sports Director Will Manso got into a heated exchange with WQAM color analyst Don Bailey Jr. on air before the Maryland game. Morgan and Manso argued with Bailey Jr. over the team's effort at Virginia with Bailey Jr. citing that "the team doesn't have enough talent or experience." Morgan and Manso countered by calling "another excuse." It eventually got to a point where Bailey Jr. began taking shots at Morgan about things he did when he was a player -- including the 66-13 loss at Syracuse and the lack of defense in UM's win over UCLA a week later.

"There really was nothing fake about it," Morgan said. "We were all pretty heated. Don said some things he now knows came off the wrong way. When your doing radio, it gets heated. Will and I didn't feel the same way as Don. It's just grown men having their opinions and arguing. Nobody was going to win that argument. Don's reached out me since and said if I offended you in anyway, I apologize. Don is a good guy and is obviously real passionate about the Hurricanes. But if things aren't going as well as I think they should be, I'll speak about it. I know Don's opinion varies from mine."

> Morgan said although he has never spoken to senior linebacker Colin McCarthy in person, he has messaged him on Facebook and passed along his number to McCarthy, who wears the same number (44) Morgan wore at UM. As for McCarthy's play... "I thought he's done well," Morgan said. "He's definitely represented the number well. I was happy about it. He obviously is a good dude."

Morgan and Gino are saying the same things I have been saying for 2 years now. Shannon's wins have come against nobody's. Morgan is right the U is about winning championships not getting whipped by mediocre teams like Cal and Wisconsin. And by the way what accomplishment has Shannon earned? Thats right constantly being outcoached by others.

Win out...including the bowl game and I will give credit where credit is due. The record would be an improvement but the season will still be a failure. Not playing for the ACC Championship year in and year out in this weak ass league is not acceptable and does not live up to University of Miami standards. I can handle the loss to OSU as they fought hard. I can handle a loss to an in state rival as long as some heart is shown....it wasn't. The Virginia debacle couldn't be more unacceptible and that one piss poor game could very well cost us a shot at the ACC championship. (Not to mention a possible rematch with FSU)

AS MUCH AS I LIKE RANDY AND WHAT HE IS DOING...

DDDIIIITTTTTOOOOOO!!!!!!

Miami Hurricanes-University of Miami excpectations ARE different...anything less than a BCS bowl is not acceptable...
period...

(that doesnt mean, we dont like the time, nor that we dont support the coach nor the players, nor that we are going to stop going to the stadium and buying season passes... it means, our excpectations are what they are...are to be the best, to be great, NOT to be just good)

Go Canes

Its a combination of factors, overly high expectations before season, injury key player led loss to VA, very costly loss, mediocre coaching evident in some games, lack of fire in first half of season. IF they win out, then let SHANNON have one more year to prove he can do it, prove he can take the U to ACC championship at least next year. If doesnt do it look for another headcoach

Darrin Smith said it best folks. Family handles business within the family. They don't go on radio shows and talk sh*t about other family members. That's what pisses me off about Gino and Morgan. How many times has Gino sent a text or left a vm wishing J12 a speedy recovery? Dorsey has contacted him at least twice and he's in Canada for crying out loud. Gino and Dan are right here. Has Dan reached out to the true freshman Kelvin Kaine to help him prep for next year or encourage him to keep learning under Mcarthy? Hell no. So I take a lot of what those two have to say with a major grain of salt.

D.Smith on the other hand has his hands, mouth and heart very close to the program. And he's doing his best each week to help out. BTW...he says no player he's talked with has been denied sideline, locker room or practice field access to the team. So stop putting that lie on this blog you RS haters!

Go Canes!

Well said Charlotte Cane, but the simple fact is, Shannon has no sense of urgency thanks to Shalala and her 8-4 and graduate players statement. Make Shannon accountable and you might get more wins, not that he doesn't want to win, but make him accountable for losses to teams like UVA and FSU. Remember, we wouldn't be having this conversation if the Hurricanes were 9-1 going into this game.

NO ACC CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR THEN RANDY SHANNON GETS THE BOOT N THATS FINAL YEA VIRGINIA LOST WAS TOUGH BUT REMEMBER J12 WENT OUT HURT 2ND QT 0-0 THEN WE PUT TRASH WHIPPLE IN GAME WHO THREW 2 PICKS BACK TO BACK THEN TRU FRESHMEN S MORRIS CAME IN AND THREW ANOTHER 2 PICKS AND ALL 4 PICKS PUT OUR DEFENSE IN BAD SITUATIONS WHERE THE OFFENSE WAS 30YDS TO 15YDS OUT FROM ENDZONE. THE ONLY LOST IM UPSET WITH IS FLA ST THATS IT N VIRG TECH IS JUST PLAYING GREAT FOOTBALL UNLIKE THE GARBAGE TEAMS IN THE ATLANTC DIVISION CUZ THEY ALL HAVE 3 LOSSES ARE BETTER BUT AGAIN IF MIAMI DOESNT WIN ACC TITLE NEXT YR I WANT RANDY DEMOTED BUT NOT FIRED BACK TO DEFENSIVE COORINATOR CUZ ATLEAST HE WAS SUCCESFUL AT D COORINATOR OHH YEA AND I AM BLACK MYSELF BUT FACTS IS FACTS AND THE TRUTH HURTS

Butch Davis inherited a 10-2 team full of talent and still took five years to get the ship righted.. Granted he had suspensions -- but Butch is ultimate in recruiting players.. Just look at the guys UNC is landing even with all the NCAA investigations swirling around.

Give Randy his time, seriously. If we beat Virginia Tech -- then we've handled the big dogs in the coastal -- UNC, GT and VT.. (UNC I don't see having been all THAT great this year..ONE wide receiver can only do so much for an offense, and their defense..Eh, Burney didn't seem to help them too much against the last two teams they've played)..

Seriously. Losing to FSU WILL happen. It's a rivalry game for a reason. If we lose to USF then we know we have MAJOR issues. The Ohio State game was VERY winnable, and I'll say that not every one of those INT's were Jacory's fault in that game. Travis Benjamin had the ball stripped right out of his hands on one..went to BLOCK on another.. And I believe it was Hankerson or Byrd that accidentally tipped a ball into an OSU players hands..

Virginia..we won't even go into how piss poor our defense looked in that one.

Our defense has been stiff, and our defense has been porous. They're bipolar. BAD bipolar.

UM must decide if football is really all that important. We as fans feel the pain of knowing when a team with potential doesn't live up to the hype. UM leadership must make the decision to ride out the storm or abandon ship. I think Shannon is a good guy but good guys don't make good coaches. I believe in the U, but it's hard to watch the Canes under achieve. I know Shannon will be back next year and we as fans will be expecting improvement and championships. We all want Miami to sit atop college football each year or within the top 10. UM was suppose to dominate the ACC, remember.

Dan Morgan made some good points. Bottom line, we want UM to win. Period. Football made "the U" what it is today. We as fans just want to feel that excitement around the program again.

I'll always support UM football but living here in Virginia Beach, VA is hard when mediocre UVA fans can talk trash about UM. Are you kidding me? A UVA fan at work told me something very true the other day. "The scoreboard doesn't lie".

Go Canes. Earn back some respect and finish strong this year.

When are you going to get it? It's not Randy, it's Shalala! The school has always been a great school. We don't need brainiacs as players to legitimize us.
I get the feeling she has an inferiority complex about the education and that projects on the team. Remember "Suntan U"?
This school & it's students have always dominated in spite of opinion.
Now that we care what others think, look at us; proud at 10-3!

Dan Morgan's career as a Cane cannot be questioned. Anyone who does either has a short memory or is a Shannon apologist. @Robert Bishop - you probably didn't like Coker because he was white. See what I did there? No one cares about Shannon's race, we just care about the record and if the team is truly improving each year. It isn't. Don't talk about lack of talent, they've had great recruiting classes. But bad, bad coaching.

Great read and makes me long for the days when Danny and KD are steering this ship. I just read about 15 paragraphs worth of pride, something that's been sorely lacking at The U.

I remember dan morgan making plays 20 ard s down field so please dan morgan lets be patient with randy lie we were patient with him

Dan Morgan was a beast and he is right in that there is no excuse for losing at Virginia...The blame for that goes directly to Mark Whipple and Shannon..Virginia stinks stopping the run and Miami was not patient and did not pound them with the run..Morris' first three plays were passes in an emergency situation..Miami has been running the ball and protecting Morris , where was that philosophy when Harris was in there?..The Defense is talented but inconsistent and Shannon has not won a bowl game but the great Butch Davis had 6 years and did not bring Miami a championship either...Give Shannon one more year and let him do or die with his recruiting classes!..Next year ACC Championship and BCS bowl at the least or bye bye Randy...I am in VA please Miami whip that Tech ass!

Improvement doesn't necesarily equal no dissapointment. And there is more than one way to measure improvement. We haven't beaten (or I would argue even played) a very high quality opponent this year. Everyone will say the Buckeyes, the Buckeyes. But they are not a great team; their a good one. Everyone is excited, and that's good, beacuase we're on a two-game winning streak, and we've run the ball well and gotten some very promising quaterback play fom a guy who should be around for a while. But, people, we beat Maryland and Georgia Tech. Georgis Tech wasn't that good this year before Nesbitt went sown. Maryland is...wel, Maryland. And we eecked it out over them. AT home.

Randy has restacked the cubbard. We have big, strong and athletic guys all over the field. Analyst everywhere say it; if you look at this team on paper, they should be monsters. But their not. We're barely beating VERY mediocre teams; and we're losing--getting pounded--down 24-0--by some that are simply inept. INEPT! This seaso nis a horrible dissapointment no matter what happens from here, which I hope is good but I doubt it. Not with this team; not with this inconsistency and the mystery of just not showing up at all every few weeks. And that seems to happen in the biggest games (VT, Wisconsin last year; Ohio State, FSU, UVA with a chance to control your own destiny this year). It's infruriating, and it's baffling.
No matter what you think of Randy, he might be our best bet, because we simply can't afford to hire and keep anybody else, and he will (should) get better as a head coach and stay here forever. He could be our Frank Beamer one day. He's learning. I hink his main problem (like George Bush ) is an inability to admit that he is or was wrong. He's not a good head coach right now. Players aren't developing and they come out flat. He's the leader; it ultimately falls on him.

This team is stacked with talent, and that is due to Randy Shannon. This team is horribly underachieving, and that too is due to Randy Shannon. It is what it is. But, I think for the future, he may be our best option if we think he can get better. I think he can if he admits to himself that he's not good right now and that some of the things he's done are not working. That goes for Whipple too, as we've seen. I wish thm the best and think talent-wise was good as anybody. That's why this is so frustrating, and that is why this year is already and undoubtably, a dissapointment.

If Dan Morgan is saying this, you can bet a lot of player alums feel the same way. The FSU abortion was bad enough, but VIRGINIA? Give me a break!

This university is (FINALLY!) getting a decent athletic center. How about we get some REAL coaches to go with it? FACE IT: We SUCK in all major sports programs anymore. Shannon and Haith are terrible and Morris has lost the touch. (I am sick of his teams going belly up to the Ratlizzurds every year!)

I don't care WHO we get, but these coaches, regardless of color or ethnicity all blow chunks!

Yes this season is already a disappointment. In 2008 I believed that this year we would compete for a NC and we are not even close.

The FSU and UVA losses were downright embarrassing.

The U that Morgan speaks of is no more, we have entered an era where 8 or 9 wins and a minor bowl game appearance are enough for the admin as long as the rap sheet stays clean. Times have changed my friends, this is the New U.

How long has the New U been in the ACC? This program cannot even win an ACC Championship. That is just sad.
