Reaction to Randy Shannon firing (updated)

Going to make this a blog where I update and place running news from today. Check for updates throughout the day.

COMPLETE AUDIO OF ATHLETIC DIRECTOR KIRBY HOCUTT'S PRESS CONFERENCE

STATEMENT FROM RANDY SHANNON

"I am proud of the last four years at the University of Miami and what we have been able to accomplish. I have a deep respect and appreciation for the young men who have played here during my tenure.

"We established three winning seasons; continually improved in the Atlantic Coast Conference over the last four years; brought in strong recruiting classes; and just as importantly, made tremendous strides off the field with our academic progress rate and graduation success rate among the best nationally.

"I believe that I leave the Hurricanes football program with a stronger foundation upon which they can continue to build. I thank President Shalala for the opportunity. Those that know my history know of my passion and dedication to the 'U', and only want success for this University moving forward."

> Interim coach Jeff Stoutland: "The reason that I became a coach is to serve student-athletes. We are in a tough situation -- there is no doubt, but that does not change our commitment to the young men on this team. Everyone on this coaching staff remains fully committed to this program and finishing this season the right way. We are going to do everything in our power to prepare for a winning bowl experience, and continue the highest standard of excellence off the field."

RECRUITS REACT

When UM recruit and Tampa Alonso star defensive end Anthony Chickillo woke up Sunday morning he said he had more than 50 missed calls and text messages on his cell phone. The majority of calls? From other coaches trying to convince him to drop UM because the school fired Randy Shannon.

"Even when I committed to Miami, they still kept calling me," Chickillo said. "Coach Shannon had a real special relationship with me. Coach Urban Meyer called me this morning. Florida State called me and left a message. Every school you can think of called me. I haven't had a chance to speak to many of them."

"It really comes down to who is going to be a head coach. My love for Miami doesn't change. I have such a strong relationship with the school itself. It's my dream to go to the University of Miami since i was a little boy. This happening -- it shocked me. And I still can't believe it."

Chickillo said he went to Saturday's game at Sun Life Stadium and was disappointed by the 23-20 overtime loss to USF. But he was also disappointed by what else he saw.

"I went to the game Saturday and saw the plane flying around with the stuff saying fire coach Shannon," Chickillo said. "There weren't a lot of people in the stands. I've been a Miami fan, a Hurricane my whole life. I love the University of Miami. And, it was sad to see. I remember Miami in the hey day in the 2000s, one of the most dominant programs in college football. I don't know what to say or why they lost. They shouldn't have lost to that USF team. I'm trying to be positive about the whole thing and see what happens."

The Hurricanes currently have seven commitments as part of the 2011 signing class. Chickillo has been a vocal leader in trying to recruit other players to UM. But with UM in the midst of a 7-5 season, it has been tough to lure others.

"I need to talk to my family about it," Chickillo said. "I think I'm going to take all my official trips. I just have to see who is going to be head coach. I think that's what everybody is waiting to see. I've heard some names out there. I want to see who comes in as coach and what type of people he brings in. I've established a good relationship with the coaches there for the past three years and now I'm going to have to establish a good relationship with a new staff in a matter of months before signing day. I want to see who the defensive line coach is. That's a real important thing for me and the process."

One coach Chickillo doesn't want to see -- former USF coach Jim Leavitt. "Jim Leavitt wouldn't be a good one I don't think. What happened with the whole USF deal, he's not well liked. I don't think that would be a good situation."

bjc/junkie, I get where you are coming from, but I'd take 2-3 successful (read: at least 1-2 of them 10 wins) from him, as long as he creates a good succession plan in place. How's Chud as OC and 'coach-in-waiting'?

sorry for the duplicate post

nycfiufan...
1) yes shannon got fired. But just because we lost to USF does not mean we are 4th best in the state, at least we look better than the gayturds.
2) Jacory has gotten worse , but to say that about Morris after 3 games is ridiculous.
3) The field does not matter. It has nothing to do with it. it was bad coaching. Thats like saying 2 teams that play on a neutral field cannot beat each other. ( no home field adv.)
4) May is a moron first to herbie. A job is a job and I would rather coach a team that is in a conf. to get a BCS(crap) bid with the possible outcome of being the hottest coach in the country. Don't listen to all the hype of UM being broke. They have plenty of money and I'll bet that last 5 MILLION $ donation is really going to help find a new coach. This decision was made before sat night. They actually said (I think on accident)sun. That they have deen forming a list for a couple of days. Win or lose ... he was gone.

Thanks coach for all you've done for us on the field but especially off the field. I realize you where criticized as our head coach, no one in there right mind could criticize you as a man! You are pure class and you brought RESPECT back to the U. Thank you for all your hard work and good luck on your future endeavours.

If...and that's a supersized "IF" the John Gruden rumors are true and he signs it would be the best any athletic director in the history of the UM program has performed (no disrespect to Sam Jankovich).

Kirby Hocutt in his short time as a Cane has put together a major contribution for the athletic department from a booster, signed us on for a game at the new Yankee Stadium and renewed the Notre Dame series.

He also tried to renew the Florida series, but those cowards were like a Don Knotts character who saw a ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufUgq1WQilQ).

"It would be great if we found the next Joe Pa in terms of longevity."...... are you sure you want an 83 year old coaching your team. Ask PSU followers how they feel about his announcement he intends to return for next season. That said, it would be great to have someone that sticks around for more than 6 years and can be seen as the face of the program.

CAT 87. No, not an 83 year old coach today (you are kidding, right?). If, for example, UM hired a Jon Gruden (age 47) and he stayed 15 years (longevity for a coach, right?), then he would be 62, a common enough age for coaches. SO, the point is to find someone reasonably young who will stay with the program over time. It could be anyone. As the other writer noted, if we got a Gruden for 6 years, that might be considered longevity for a coach with NFL aspirations. In this respect, Pete Carrol would be an example of a kind of "longevity." Plus, any self-respecting coach (like Joe Pa) should retire by 82 at the most. It's about that commodity that Shannon had: LOYALTY, not age. May the Canes find it AND a winner!

I think that Miami should bring back Butch Davis, because he know the program the peoples of Miami and the players. The best man for the job is Butch Davis

Heater--Please tell your "friends" that, while they certainly are entitled to their opinions, if they were real fans and supporters of the U, they would not have made such a public display of their anger and embarrassed the U. Furthermore, if they are big-time donors as you suggest, then they certainly have the ears of the UM administration. A better move would have been to write a letter to Pres. Shalala and threatened to pull their donations. Instead, they make us all look like a bunch of whiny, bytchy spolied brats, and that is regrettable. At least one recruit noticed their poor tact and lack of class, and it wouldn't surprise me oif others did. After that display, I would not blame any recruit who said to heck with the U, if their fans are going to be like that I'll go somewhere else. And that would be a shame. P.S. While I completely agree w/the disappointment, disgust, etc. that your friends feel, their method of expression cheapened that message. Finally, if your friends want me to tell them in person what I thought about their boorish behavior and how poorly it reflected on the U, its teams, students and alums, I'd be happy to. Just let me know and we'll arrange a meeting.

You tards that keep throwing out names, makes me laugh knowing that people are really that stupid....Why would Richt come to the U? Gruden?
Any idea where RS stood in terms of paid coaches in the NCAA? We get what we pay for. Maybe if you "fans" would put your money where your mouth is we could get one of these coaches, Maybe. But if you think Gruden would come to the U when he making more money in television and not having to put up with the BS that you people throw out....get %^&*ing REAL.

Idiots........

He contacted us "RETARD". Sentinel, which reported the Randy firing 2 hours before the Herald, is reporting that Jon Gruden called both President Shalala and Kirby this morning to express his interest in the job. Learn the facts Jack.

Gruden with Chud as coach-in-waiting would be beautiful. I hear you on the 10-win seasons.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gruden, but I think it's a long shot.

Chickillo is a must-get. Can't blame him for taking his visits though. I also can't blame coaches for calling him, it's how the game is played.

canes let regroup.... donate some money and find us a really good coach... i am ready to spend my money on the canes again,.....since the shannon era is over...

Gruden is a "rumor" - makes UM Leadership look good but Lou Holtz is coming

I can't find the article on the Sentinel that you speak of.

A talking head on a radio program apparently started the Gruden rumor and it was picked up by the UM Rivals.com people and now some national outlets are repeating the same rumor which appears to be a hoax.

The Canes need a Jon Gruden-type to come in and rejuvenate their program. Chucky would bring passion, intensity, NFL experience, and would instantly bring good karma to the Canes and their fan base. What recruit in their right mind wouldn't at least consider the Canes if Gruden shows up to their house flashing his Super Bowl ring and promising them that he knows what it takes to make it to the next level? The Canes are unlike any other college football program in the country. In many ways, they have the feel of a professional team because the fan base only shows up when they win, and expectations are through the roof year in and year out, fair or unfair. Gruden has coached in the NFL, so he knows the importance of obtaining results, and doing so quickly. Hell, he won the Super Bowl his first year with Tampa Bay. With the talent on this Canes team matched with Gruden's coaching, the Canes could be a force next season.

It is believed tha Gruden is the choice by the 49'ers to replace Singletary. Are you going to coach for the 49'ers or the Canes...c'mon folks--how about a reality check!

Also, if there were ANY truth to the Gruden rumor it would be ESPN breaking the story not some disc jockey on a AM station or a couple of guys working a Rivals.com site. Gruden works for ESPN. Do you think he would allow someone else to scoop his colleagues at ESPN...puhleeze!

Of course I hope he is coming, but it makes zero sense.

Thank you for the link Duh. I hope I am wrong and will look forward to being reminded (razzed) of my skeptisism if Gruden signs. If he does sign no one will be happier than me. The recruiting alone would be off the charts.

Whatever coach we get, I want someone who inspires what Andre Johnson did today.

"According to a UM source, former NFL coach Jon Gruden initiated contact with the university to express his desire for the job and that the interest in mutual. Hocutt said there's no timeline on the hire and that money will not be an issue in the selection."

DIG DEEPER next time, also check out the ESPN story in which they admit that "Several Website are already reporting Gruden will be named the next Head Coach". If you need help finding it....... get a bigger moniter.

Good luck in your next endevors coach. You made a difference to those young men lives. You should be proud of the grad. rate and running a clean program. Just take this as a lesson learned. You have to get assistants that can teach and develop talent.

Yet, the clueless and inept Obama, the Randy Shannon of president's is the worst leader in the history of the country...go figure! Word has it that Obama and Pelosi are going to start a commune/kiosk outside of Sun Life Staidum and sell tofu hot dogs as they believe this will kick-start the economy and create a new wave of jobs.

For all you bone heads out there, if Jacory was healthy, he would have started and won the last 3 losses we had. Then all you haters would be complaining about only winning 10 games this year.

Why are we so committed to finding a coach who is in the fraternity of The U? Every coach that won a National Title never had any previous affiliation to the school. As much talent as there is in South Florida any good to great coach can win more than 9 games.

As far as the offense goes, we got worse than we did the first year under Whipple. Not to mention there were not many pass plays that took pressure off of the offensive line. As much as I disliked Patrick Nix I have to admitt that he understood how to get pressure off of the Offensive line. All the bubble screens and quick slants would have been a wonderful addition to the Whipple playbook. The majority of the passes never left the quarterbacks hands on the first or second read which is not what they do in the pros. Whipple was good because he understood the deep passes, but all of his intermediate routes were too complicated and often resulted in interceptions regardless of who was playing quarterback.

The defense was the only bright spot on the team before the FSU, VTech, USF game. Oh yeah, and not to mention the Virginia game too because 20 points is too much for a winless ACC team.

In short, the only coaches that I would keep would be the defensive line coach Petri and the defensive coordinator. Without their contribution this year would have been abismal. Petri helped the whole entire team by putting pressure on the quarterbacks that resulted in turnovers while John Lovett dialed up the right plays to keep the team in most games. On the other hand, there is not one coach from the offensive side of the ball that I would keep. I would let go of Jeff Stoutland because his group has never protected the quarterback since his arrival. Maybe I would keep the running backs coach but that's all.

WHERE IS MY COMMENT FROM EARLIER? I said nothing wrong, foul or otherwise. I guess you just can't take it. Ridiculous.

Check that. Just found it. Sorry about that. I thought you censored a pretty mundane comment. Keep up the good work.

Disgraceful."The U" has been on life support since we gave up our Home for the jrs temple of sweat and boredom. Weren't we promised they'd stay true to the soul of the OB? Really blame the base for allowing their opinions manipulated by club level boosters. We traded a city's heartbeat for a stadium rock album. Now that the plug has been pulled, which is how I view the disrespect with which one of our own was shoved out. You let a man who has dedicated a large portion of his adult life loyaly serving this university go out there one last time with the outstanding group of young men that he has led. Led in the direction of successful manhood. Led to leadership roles in NFL franchises. And not for nothing led to multiple pro bowl appearances. Fire Shannon Fire Shannon Fire Shannon. Disgraceful.

WHAT BULL$#@! IS THAT. 3.4 MILLION TO GRUDEN AND COACH SHANNON HAD TO BEG FOR A RAISE. shalala THE $#$$#@ GRINCH LOOKING THING IS $#@!% DOWN LOW AS IT GETS

ALL I HOPE IS THAT SHANNON STAYS ON THE STAFF AS DC BUT THAT MIGHT HURT HIS EGO AND MAY DECIDE TO MOVE ON TO ANOTHER SCHOOL

As a UM alum I've followed my beloved Canes for 35 years. Coach Shannon should not have been fired! All the dropped balls and turnovers weren't his fault. If he'd had a quarterback the caliber of ones in the past, this season, would have been completely different. It's hard to believe UM used to be called Quarterback U. GO CANES!

problem is he recruited the quarterbacks, so it is his fault and ran the good ones off. If he knew how to coach and develop talent then he would not have lost, but he did.
Big difference in superbowl winning head coach in Gruden and non divsion winning Shannon, Emilia

I am deeply disappointed at Shannons firing, the assistant who helped with the 9 wins last year let him down ,Shannon trusted them to get the job done this year... they failed. During the season isn't the time to make a change.Shannon realized this but couldn't make a change until year end.

thank u randy. U were a sacrafice for the the U. shalala should be ashamed. I wish u would have fired whipple he was the true problem. tv contracts have changed college football forever. im willing to bet there will be no more dynasties. randy was a pillar to this program and fans should be ashamed. sad day for the U.

Gruden...

Let me get this straight:

"Shannon we cannot give you more than 1 Million a year (more based on incentives)..we can't give you more to hire MORE assistants to assist the kids so you will have to practically live at the Athletic center, but becuase you love Miami we feel you are the man that will clean the program, recruit kids from Miami, get the graduation levels up to Stanford's level and take your time winning."

Some Corporate America thinking boosters, now decide they want Gruden and for him they will give 3.4 Million and ALL THE TOOLS that he needs...

Man have we regressed to the Jackie Robinson era or what????

Miami has become the bigotted booster school..

HOMIE DO U FEEL THE NEED TO PUT EVERYONE DOWN. YOU MUST HAVE SOME ANGER ISSUES. ANYWAYS IF I CAN RECALL, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON SHANNON LEFT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING THE QBS TO WHIPPLE. WHIPPLE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN OVER AS OC AND HIRED SOMEONE AS THE QUARTERBACK COACH. thanks for your input though, you do a lot to contribute to the conversation

MY LAST POST WAS FOR "championships is all that matters". @MIAMIISBIGGOTED YOU BRING UP A VERY GOOD POINT. THE BOOSTER CLUB HAS THEIR PRIORITIES ALL WRONG

MY BIGGEST QUESTION IS DUE TO THE FACT THIS AREA IS A NO FLY ZONE AREA, HOW WAS THIS PLANE ALLOWED TO FLY ABOVE THIS STADIUM. SOME ONE(S) VERY BIG MUST HAVE BEEN BEHIND THIS. THIS WAS A MAJOR VIOLATION. WHAT'S TO STOP A COPY CAT TERROIST FROM DOING THIS SAME THING, BUT WITH DIFFERENT CONSEQUENCES. I FIND NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT THIS. THIS WAS A MAJOR BREECH, ONE THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT VERY CLOSELY BY THE PROPER AUTHORITIES. ALSO, COACH SHANNON WAS JUST GIVEN A FOUR YEAR CONTRACT IN MAY. THE UM IS IN THE TOP IN REGARDS TO PLAYER'S GRADUATING AND PLAYER'S ACADEMICS, THEY'RE ONE OF THE LEAST SCHOOLS TO HAVE PLAYERS ARRESTED. ONLY ONE IN HIS FOUR YEARS COM PARED TO OVER THIRTY FOR COACH MEYERS AT FLORIDA IN FIVE YEARS. I'M LEFT TO WONDER WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLE IS BEING SET FOR THOSE WHO DO A GOOD JOB, BUT IS NOT IN THE FAMILY CLICHE. MR. HOCUTT. I HOPE YOU MADE A HONEST AND RIGHTEOUS DECISION, BECAUSE IF YOU DIDN'T, YOU'RE GOING TO FIND OUT JUST HOW POWERFUL THE JUDGEMENT OF THE HAND OF GOD IS. REMEMBER, WE REAP WHAT WE SOW. IF WE HAVE REAPED HONESTY AND INTEGRITY, IT WILL COME BACK UPON US, BUT IF NOT. THE HAND OF GOD IS THE EQUALIZER. WHILE COACH SHANNON, MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SPECIAL TO YOU, HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE U M BY THE HAND OF GOD AND IF THIS IS NOT A RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT THEN YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THE HAND OF GOD JUDGE YOU. WHILE I RESPECT YOUR DECISION EVEN IF I DON'T AGREE. THE FINAL POWER AND GLORY BELONG TO THE ALMIGHTY GOD AND HE WILL DETERMINE THE FINAL OUTCOME. THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT GOD'S JUDGEMENT IS ALL THE FRIENDS OR ASSOCIATES IN THE WORLD CANNOT STOP HIS POWER. PROVERBS 11:8 ISAIAH 54:17 DEUETERONOMY 28:7

Homie I think everyone knew that. Whipple has been OC and QB coach since he was hired, last year. The only QB with any skills is Morris, Shannon ran the other 2 good ones off. What kills me is that U and just about 4 others on here only say its sad and shannon got done wrong just because of his race. If he were white U guys would have demanded that he be canned way before now. I am committed to a coach winning championships and games not the race of a man. Randy was a good man is some aspects but as a head coach he was not. His record speaks for itself. I wanted the man to succeed here because I thought that since he played under Jimmy and coached with Butch he would know what to do. But it became clear he did not. Truth is I wanted Coker gone after the 05 season because it was pretty clear after the loss to Tennessee that year with Berlin at QB that he did not know what he was doing either.

ALRIGHT, SO WHY IS THAT SHALALA AND HOCUTT CAN ALL OF A SUDDEN PAY FOR JON GRUDEN WITH MULTI-MILLION CHECK AND THEY WERE SCRATCHING FOR PENNIES FOR SHANNON'S PAYCHECK. THE BEST AVAILABLE RESOURCES WERE NOT THERE FOR SHANNON.

Here we go with the racism. Is it possible that Randy Shannon is just not a good head coach?

The guy had a top-10 recruiting class that looked good as freshman and they got worse by junior year.

Shannon will be remembered in the same light as Lou Saban meaning he'll be credited as laying the foundation for better days.…

What's that phrase you guys were using....

"Shannon is going to here regardless of what you blog, so live with it or go find another team to cheer for."

Well...he's gone. Live with it or go find another team to support.

THANKS COACH SHANNON FOR HELP PUTTING THE PROGRAM ON THE RIGHT TRACK. I HOPE THE FANS REALIZE ONE DAY HOW MUCH YOU DONE FOR THE UNIVERSITY. I KNOW THAT THIS IS A BUSINESS. IT'S HARD TO SEE COACHES BLAMED FOR DROPPED PASSES, PENALTIES, TURNOVERS, BUT THAT'S THE WAY MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS. THE BEST WAY THE PLAYERS CAN HONOR YOU IS GO OUT IN THE BOWL GAME AND SHOW WHY THEY WERE RECRUITED TO THE U. THEY NEED TO LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND HOLD THEMSELVES ACCOUNTABLE. PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO PROTEST WITH CLASS. THE BANNER FLYING OVER THE STADIUM WAS CLASSLESS.

Thats my sentiments exactly Junk, Thats all we could hear out of those guys now it looks like the shoe is on the other foot. We tied to tell them.

Emilio what part of SuperBowl winning head coach versus former defensive coordinator that has never on a division title much less a National title do U not understand.

OK FOOL, THE ONLY REASON JON GRUDEN WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH TAMPA BAY (WITH DUNGY'S PLAYERS) WAS BECAUSE HE WAS ONE YEAR REMOVED FROM THE HEAD COACH POSITION FROM THE OAKLAND RAIDERS WHERE HE KNEW THE ENTIRE PLAYBOOK BY HEART. AND CAN YOU GUESS WHO WAS GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO CALL THE PLAYS AGAINST TAMPA BAY: THE OFFENSIVE CORDINATOR WHO WAS PROMOTED TO INTERIM HEAD COACH. THE FOLLOWING TWO SEASONS AT TAMPA BAY WERE WAY BELOW.500

Yeah, Gruden sucked at Tampa and had problems with black players....

But I guess that is what Miami is looking, someone to handle the negroes...I bet the dancing and showing emotion is what send the boosters out ot fire RAndy SHannon, How dare them negroes dance and have fun..!!!

Jon Gruden affirms ESPN committmentEmail Print Comments1 ESPN.com news services

ESPN football analyst Jon Gruden said Sunday night that he isn't leaving ESPN.

"I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN," Gruden said in a statement. "I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job."

Earlier Sunday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel, citing a University of Miami source, said Gruden initiated talks for the Hurricanes' open coaching position.

Miami fired Randy Shannon on Saturday night, hours after Miami lost to South Florida in its regular-season finale. The Hurricanes fell to 7-5, still have yet to play for an Atlantic Coast Conference title and lured only 26,369 fans -- many of them rooting for the visitors -- to Sun Life Stadium on Saturday, the smallest home crowd since Larry Coker's last home game in 2006.

The Associated Press, citing an anonymous source, reported that Gruden, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach, is atop Miami's wish list to fill the position.
