Shannon out as coach at UM (updated)

The Randy Shannon era is officially over at UM. Shannon was informed earlier tonight by athletic director Kirby Hocutt he has been fired.

Randy Shannon

The fate of all his assistants still isn't known. According to an ESPN report, offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has already been told he is out as well. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is expected to become the interim coach for the bowl game.

One assistant coach, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was already speaking to his agent about latching on at other programs. As for Shannon, the assistant said: "I can't imagine what he's going through right now. He loved this program with all his life. It's the tough part of the business."

The Hurricanes finished the regular season at 7-5 after a 23-20 overtime loss to South Florida at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday. Shannon compiled a 28-22 record, including a 16-16 mark in the ACC in four years as head coach of the Hurricanes. He received a four-year extension just before the start of the 2010 season.

Who made the decision? The Associated Press says Hocutt made the final call. But sources say UM President Donna Shalala and the board of trustees gave Hocutt the green light to get rid of Shannon after the Florida State debacle and loss at Virginia.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” Hocutt said in a UM press release. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

Hocutt will address the media Sunday at 1.

Over the past month, I've been told by several sources who have a vested interest in UM that Georgia's Mark Richt and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach are at the top of UM's wish list. We'll see if that comes to fruition.

Cristabol or however you spell it! Dude has passion and bleeds UM orange and green!

Gruden is a pipe dream - man would require a 4 million dollar paycheck!

Nothing to see here,

He's such a good coach that he's getting ready for the Superbowl. I stand corrected. You obviously know what you are talking about.

In 1988 President Shalala then Chancellor at the Univ. of Wisconsin contacted a defensive coordinator at Notre Dame who had just won the National Championship. His name was Barry Alvarez. Three Rose Bowls later he is now the AD at UW and his hand picked successor Bret Bielema just won a Big 10 title today and will likely earn a Rose Bowl bid. Pres. Shalala knows what she is doing. Good luck.

Agree KC. With the players in place we need a coach that runs a pro style offense. That's what's worked here.

Mark Richt is only going to come if he gets fired, no way he leaves Georgia. Gary Patterson is a pipe dream. Same with Gruden. Id go for Skip Holtz, even though he just signed on at USF. But realisticly, you are not going to get a big time head coach. There's not that many out there. Maybe a young stud cordinator like Kirby Smart or Mark Stoops.

Oh as for gruden name the last time an nfl coach or assistant did anythign in college football? answer never. They tried that with charlie weiss at nd how did that work out. Gruden is a good nfl coach horrible gm as he showed at tb but a good nfl coach. Coaching in college and the nfl are 2 diffrent ggs. U can win big in college and fail in nfl and vice versa. Pete carroll is the one former nfl guy to succeed but hes not like gruden. Hes a laid back happy go lucky kind of guy where as gruden is a hard ass by all accounts. Gruden a bad fit. Plus lets face one big fact miami cant afford gruden.

What about Mario C? He turned the worst team in America to a conference winner in 3 yrs. As true of a Cane as anyone. Go Canes.

Enough said. A good decision by the UM. While Shannon was successful in areas off the field, this team has been inconsistent, lost and too often unmotivated. So, let's find an intense coach who is inclusive and relates well to the players, the community and the media. UM needs someone who is a major recruiter and a passionate coach, and who can bring out the best in young men, on and off the field. Leach? forget about it. Gruden, worth a look. Richt, once a miami guy.

But who else is out there and is the next coaching star? The next Gene Chizik (5 - 19 at Iowa State). Let's take our time and find him. Let's find someone who will love the school, the community and who will proudly lead the Canes for many years to come. GO CANES!

The list:
1. Harbaugh
2. Chris Peterson
2A. Gary Patterson
3. Muschamp

Nothing to see here,

Jon was fired. Dude, don't come at me when you obviously don't have a clue. I live in Tampa and heard the news on the radio when it happened. Did you even know that he coached the Bucs. Move along, theres nothing to see here.

Man some of you people are clueless about Mike Leach. Mike Leach's players loved him. Mike Leach did more with less talent than any other coach. He also had the highest graduation rates in the nation. He is also a good man, who cares about his players and produces wins. Too many of you people have been drinking the ESPN Kool Aid!

This is why there was no point in firing Shannon. Who is out there to replace him. Everyone who is being mentioned has been no better than what we had to begin with. Hey UM Fan, Gruden won with a team that Dungy built, and as far as those great defensive coaches that we should keep, were you watching that last drive today?

Guaranteed contract:

One all expense paid "adventure" anywhere in the world for three weeks in the offseason every year. For life. Also hairgel.

Typical thoughts of NYCFIUFan - " I am very happy that my favorite team will be going to the R&L Carriers Bowl even though they didn't beat a single team outside of their god-awful conference and all the press for the greatest achievement in their pathetic school's history is being taken up by the firing of UM's coach."

"Also I'm upset because I am cold and UM will still be going to a better bowl game and I don't have a job because I have a second rate public education."

That's Kablamo.

Problem with Leach is you'll have 3 legitimate future NFL running backs on the team next year. Leach won't use those running backs.

Dan Mullen? He turned Mississippi State around in his 2nd year. He was Urban Cryers OC.

Top 2 (no particular order):

1. Cristobal
2.Chud (why is no one mentioning him?)

It was well over due. We need a coach not a cry baby who respects his competition to much. The nice guy role doesnt respresent the U.

NicaCane,
Yes I know he was fired but the Bucs also wanted to go with younger players and he didnt want to go that way so they let him go
Dont tell me you are that much of a dolt

There's a good coach out there for this team. This administration needs to take their time and do their research, and not go for the glitzy name.

I remember when they wanted to burn the people that hired Auburn's current coach. They plucked that dude out of Iowa State, and now, they are getting ready to play for the National Championship. We need search like that.

Yeah - Mullen may be worth a look. Done well at UF and as the HC at Miss St.

If Mike Leach could contend for a national championship with reject Talent at Texas Tech...imagine what he could do with 4 Crabtrees instead of just 1. You people would be soooooo lucky to get Coach Leach!! You people need to quit listening to all the lies that ESPn reported about Coach Leach....and also read the leaked emails from the TTU adminstration, and you will see that they planned on firing him a year before it actually happened. Mike Leach is innocent, and you people would be DAMN Lucky to have him as a head coach. He would take you all the way!

Shanon had to go, but I wish him well in his next job!

He is a true Cane, just not HC material especially at the U.

Mike Leach sucks. I repeat Mike Leach sucks. I'm not that high on Gruden for the long term, but with other people's talent, he's shown that he can win in the short-term, i.e. the Tampa Super Bowl with Dungy players. This team is talented. Perhaps he can pull what Roy Williams did in his first season at UNC. Miami must not divert from it's pro-set ways. Adding a bit of spread to take advantage of speed at vaults positions is ok, but not as a base offense. Speaking of Dungy, I would love for him to be the coach. That's probably not going to happen, so I say JJ, Gruden, Butch, Ritch, Dennis Green, Mario in that order.

The Boise State Coach Chris Peterson wouldn't have to worry about qualifying as a legitimate upper echelon school if he was the head coach at Miami. He runs a fine pro type offense. I would also suggest that he bring in Ken Dorsey as his quaterback coach.

Terry Bowden will be named the new coach on Monday.

I hope not Leach! Richt wouldnt be my first choice. John Gruden, Chris Peterson, Jim Harbaugh, would be my first picks. Kinda sad how this staff quit on him like that. I wonder what happens to Whipple's son? Kirby Smart wouldnt be bad either. Pete Carrol maybe? Butch Davis? Who knows. I wish the best to Shannon. I dont know why he didnt bring in Dorsey or Kehoe i think he maybe could have and those two offensive guys may have helped. Oh well hindsights always 20 20. I guess its about where we go from here. I imagine some time shortly after the bowl game a coach will be named. please not leach though.

Nothing to see here, are you Gruden's agent? You sure have all the inside excuses for why he was fired.

So it wasn't his fault, it was because he kept winning with old dudes so they let him go because he couldn't coach young guys.

Where do I pick him up tonight? Let's get this guy in here to coach young college...oh wait, I'm a dolt.

Dude, get a clue.

Many writers are mentioning FIU coach Mario Cristobal. A warrior as an O lineman for the Canes. Has FIU (!!) winning and playing hard. And has roots in South Florida. Hmmmm...definitely worth a serious look. Go Canes!

This is not a professional football team, this is a college team. They did not have a losing record. They are going to a bowl game. Everyone agrees that Randy Shannon is a good man of character. Bottomline, He did not deserve to be fired before the end of the season. This decision could have waited. UM = no class! Period!

The answer lies out west: Chris Petersen (born October 13, 1964) is a college football coach, currently the head coach of the Boise State Broncos. Petersen is the first and only two time winner of the Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year Award for the seasons of 2006 and 2009. Petersen is the only two time winner of the award since it was renamed in 1986. He has guided the Broncos to two BCS game wins (2007 Fiesta Bowl, 2010 Fiesta Bowl).

I dont like Mike leach.

Listen to randy Shannon's post game interview- the most tongue tied he's ever been./

The players let him down big time- that is on all of them- The O-Line didnt play. It was likethey were too stuffed withthanksgivingturkey. they diddnt open up any holes, and berry struggled to get 1, 2 yds a pop.

The receivers except hank let him down. Streeter is an alligator hands- T-rex hands

benjamin- Ijust wish he'd transfer or quit and go somewhere like Georgia tech where they never throw theball

mccarthy- as I said before, for every 5 tackles he makes, he misses 8.

brandon harris was schooled today, and let daddy shannon down

all of you players have blood on your hands. If you couldnt motivate yourselves to play hard against FSU, beat vT at home, or usf, then its on you.Youhave no pride. You have no desire. And unfortunately, your ex-coach didnt have the --ls to sit any of you down or take away your scholies.

Who is the idiot that wants Jimmy Johnson, he's going to be 68 next year and out of the college game for what 22 years. What the U needs to do is find the Next Johnson or Tressel. I want the AD to work for his money, don't just pick anyone that has past issues, that hasn't really won anything, or someone with an agenda to use to get to the NFL.

Randy was a class act that was under achieving that lead to being rightfully under appreciated....The U has made several missteps in recent years and we need to get this one right or you can start pouring dirt in the hole. Kirby, take your time (3 weeks max) and get it right this time. I can tell ya' Miami is not the cake job we all think it is. We are likely going to have to go for an up and comer because this program has a lot going against it!

Coach Shannon would deserve a job calling the defense that is where he is at his best. As for the next head coach I would not mind seeing Will Muschamp as the head coach. Everywhere he has been the program has had one of the top defenses in the country.

Randy Edsall, Kyle Whittingham or Greg Schiano

Who was JJ, Dennis Erickson when they came here? I remember everyone was freaked out about Erickson...he seemed to do OK..

Mainecaine, you're absolutely right. Miami would be lucky to get Leach.

Thank You Jesus!!! My prayers were answered!!! First of all, I don't want anyone who read my comment to think I wanted Randy Shannon to be fired. I wanted him to succeed as being the first African-American football coach to lead a team to a BCS Bowl game or the BCS Championship. But unfortunately with all the talent that "The U" has on both sides of the ball, we truly underachieved after finishing the regular season last year with a 9-3 record. Second off, I believe that Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity wants to keep Mark Richt around for next season. Our best option is to go after former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and also go after former South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt as an assistant head coach/defensive coordinator. I really do believe that Mike Leach can help bring us back to prominence by putting some points and yards on the board for us. I also thank God that assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has been fired as wellbecause with the talent and depth we have at the skill positions there's no freakin' way we should be inconsistent when the game is on the line (i.e., Ohio State, Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and USF). Also, Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt, and the UM board of trustees need to sit down and consider if we need to be in the ACC any longer. I would like for us to go back to where we were once dominant; the Big East Conference. Let us take on the role as the college football "prodigal sons" and go back to the Big East. We didn't do anything in the ACC since moving there in 2004 and I don't see any advantages of being in the ACC that we can't receive back in the Big East Conference. Oh well, so much for wishful thinking on that part. But it's good that Donna and Kirby put their collective foot down and stop this atrocity that's been our Miami football team this year. God bless Randy Shannon and all of his accomplishments he's done at "The U". But if it doesn't accumulate as wins on the football field, then there's got to be a change. God bless you Randy, now let's bring on Mike Leach as our new head coach!!!
REDZOMBIE13

Whipple need to get fired to

bring back Kehoe

Chud
Cristobal
No

Bringback Coker!

This is sad indeed, but perhaps needed. Firing a person is no laughing matter and it certainly should not be gloated over and celebrated - but from time-to-time it becomes a sine qua non. I would say to Coach Shannon that it's okay to grieve the decision, but to those who would gloat, I would remind them of the scripture in Micah 7:8 "Do not rejoice over me, my enemy; When I fall, I will arise; When I sit in darkness, The LORD will be a light to me.

why would TCU or Boise want to coach in this horrible place we play..recruits dont want to play in it..our players dont play in it well nor the dolphins...Marc Trestman is the guy period google him...

WOW cannot believe he will be missed but if they are going the wrong direction if they want Leach or Richt none of those coaches have done they better look somewhere else..

brad childress!

chris peterson would be the best, but that's not going to happen, so hopefully not mike leach.

LOL Just like when she hired Larry Coker and Randy Shannon?

Mainecaine, you're right. Miami would be lucky to get Leach.

FIU FIU FIU. hahahahahaha, you can't spell scum without UM! Say HELLO to ANOTHER rebuilding project!

Mark Stoops, Mario Cristobal or Manny Diaz
