Shannon out as coach at UM (updated)

The Randy Shannon era is officially over at UM. Shannon was informed earlier tonight by athletic director Kirby Hocutt he has been fired.

Randy Shannon

The fate of all his assistants still isn't known. According to an ESPN report, offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has already been told he is out as well. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is expected to become the interim coach for the bowl game.

One assistant coach, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was already speaking to his agent about latching on at other programs. As for Shannon, the assistant said: "I can't imagine what he's going through right now. He loved this program with all his life. It's the tough part of the business."

The Hurricanes finished the regular season at 7-5 after a 23-20 overtime loss to South Florida at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday. Shannon compiled a 28-22 record, including a 16-16 mark in the ACC in four years as head coach of the Hurricanes. He received a four-year extension just before the start of the 2010 season.

Who made the decision? The Associated Press says Hocutt made the final call. But sources say UM President Donna Shalala and the board of trustees gave Hocutt the green light to get rid of Shannon after the Florida State debacle and loss at Virginia.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” Hocutt said in a UM press release. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

Hocutt will address the media Sunday at 1.

Over the past month, I've been told by several sources who have a vested interest in UM that Georgia's Mark Richt and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach are at the top of UM's wish list. We'll see if that comes to fruition.

JIMMY JOHNSON PLEASE COME OUT OF RETIREMENT_------PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to start out by saying, With all due respect, but I don't respect any of you.
The people who are really to blame for the past few years of misery as the same people looking for a head coach right now. The have this business called "The U" in which has thrived financially, not with championships from TV sponsorship, getting fat,and complacent. They hired Coker, and failed and then Shannon, with a High School football-like staff. They paid their staff nothing and now have destroyed a legacy, a college franchise.
They destroyed a place (The Orange Bowl) that helped them win, to move to a place that helps them lose and nobody knows the name of it.
And signed a contract for only for the next.................. 30 years.
All for the love of money.

Now, let me get this straight....
We did not have money to save the Orange Bowl, or to spruce it up, but we have the money to build a completely new stadium ?? The Unversity is ran by idiots, and your city is ran by idiots.
Now also, let me get this straight.. the Bloggers ask for a Coach who is in legal bind with the Sports based station who promotes/ airs us (ESPN)??
How could you destroy a franchise, a foundation that carries the name you love(MIAMI) internationally ??
I would ask for Shalala's head.
She is the new Al Davis. I love my Hurricanes, with all my heart.
Nobody could win with with that type of leadership. We are becoming the Oakland Raiders because of her.
It will take another 2 to 3 years to get back to respectable. Let's cut her loose too.
Send a message to the University and let them know you've had it with her too. Am I lying ???

Look how Leach left Texas Tech. Sues them and then sues ESPN. Why would you want him running Miami?

Posted by: Jason | November 27, 2010 at 11:26 PM

To win Championships retard. How's Texas Tech doing without him? Imagine that offense with our talent?

This was the right decision at the right time from a recruitment standpoint. Hopefully, we can pick up a good one before all the bigger schools go shopping.

Best of luck, Randy!

But on second thought....take Tuberville. PLEASE!

Chris Peterson( Current Boise State head coach) - as Miami's Head Coach to replace R.Shannon

Ken Dorsey-- as the Canes Quaterback Coach.

Miami would be starting out with two established winners in their own right.

Jon Gruden we need u!!!!!!!!!!!!! miami shouldn't try to get mike leach because he runs a spread and miami has been known by the pro-style offense.

A Black coach that tries to rebuild a program the right way has no place in college athletics apparently.Ask Ty and sylvester. With NO fan base, even less alumni support and meager salaries/facilities, the deck was always stacked against Randy and his staff. Sleep well Hocutt and Shalala...

Well I must thank Randy Shannon for the respect that he did return to our school. Money talks and bs walks! The stands today had about 5000 fans. Everyone played flat. Randy's a good man and I thought that he would get another year. For all of the nay sayers. Let's see what it does to the local recruits. Remember that the U rose up in the '80s after the Liberty City riots and the school reached out to the local players to help heal the city. Well Randy was that second mend to the local kids. You can kiss that away now. Nether Leach nor Richt have won anything. Leach is bad news and the Georgia fans want to fire Richt for being unable to get the most out the talented kids he recruited. Gruden is a pro coach and would not consider coming to the U. So, what we will get is some coach who has won in a weak conference with a gimmick offense. I hate to see what is going to happen to that great staple of running backs that we have. Randy's biggest problem was hiring the right assistants. He should have look to the pro ranks more for his assistants. The assistants are the ones that get your players prepared. Lack of preparation hurt us year after year. I am not looking forward to the next two years. One thing that we can count on is the naysayers on this web site will not be happy and will continue to run recruits away. Go Canes!

Its about damn time! I shutter every single time Harris threw the ball...Whipple calling play action every other play...Shannon looking like he has downs-syndrome on the sidelines...no one playing with ANY passion, un-freakin-believable for a UM "team". I really don't care if Shannon gets another job, he had some of the best talent in his own back yard, year after year, and failed. How can you get another job with that resume. You're given the best and you continue to fail.

if memory serves,.. Mike Leach runs a spread,..? not to mention the bad pub that we'd get with his whole debacle. No for Leach. it'd better be someone that will still run a pro style offense, thats one reason why so many of our players are NFL ready, in my opinion at least. then again, i hear Green Bay is high on Sam Shields, but that he didnt even know how to watch film correctly. maybe thats one of the underlying reasons.

You've made my point for me. WE've been supplying the NFL for years while we run our "Pro Style", how's that worked out for us???????? Time to worry about numero uno. The NFL will ALWAYS pick the fruit from our trees.

asevere, i was saying wow no sam bradford, a dropped pass in the endzone by the noles and a triple option team are such great wins....NOT oh yeah followed by a beatdown by VT in the rain. hmmm miami practices all summer/spring in the rain.

Jon Gruden we need u!!!!!!!!!!!!! miami shouldn't try to get mike leach because he runs a spread and miami has been known by the pro-style offense.

Posted by: junior | November 28, 2010 at 12:01 AM

And what has that "Pro Style" done for us?

Does Butch Davis still want the job back?

Someone that is a proven Head Coach at a smaller program that's HUNGRY should be given the job. UConn's coach or Schiano or Al Golden from Temple come to mind. Or Terry Bowden could be a wild card choice.

I guess Christmas has come early!!!!

Thank You Jesus!!! My prayers were answered!!! First of all, I don't want anyone who read my comment to think I wanted Randy Shannon to be fired. I wanted him to succeed as being the first African-American football coach to lead a team to a BCS Bowl game or the BCS Championship. But unfortunately with all the talent that "The U" has on both sides of the ball, we truly underachieved after finishing the regular season last year with a 9-3 record. Second off, I believe that Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity wants to keep Mark Richt around for next season. Our best option is to go after former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and also go after former South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt as an assistant head coach/defensive coordinator. Maybe we can also recruit Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as our defensive coordinator since head coach Mack Brown is planning on makeing some coaching changes out there in Austin, Texas next week. I really do believe that Mike Leach can help bring us back to prominence by putting some points and yards on the board for us. I also thank God that assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has been fired as well because with the talent and depth we have at the skill positions there's no freakin' way we should be inconsistent when the game is on the line (i.e., Ohio State, Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and USF). Also, Donna Shalala, Kirby Hocutt, and the UM board of trustees need to sit down and consider if we need to be in the ACC any longer. I would like for us to go back to where we were once dominant; the Big East Conference. Let us take on the role as the college football "prodigal sons" and go back to the Big East. We didn't do anything in the ACC since moving there in 2004 and I don't see any advantages of being in the ACC that we can't receive back in the Big East Conference. Let's remember one thing, we're "the U"!!! We are a world renowned, name-branded, nationally exposed college football team just like USC and Notre Dame. And for that fact, the money made or earned wouldn't be any different if we moved back to the Big East Conference and left the ACC. Let East Carolina or UCF take our place. Oh well, so much for wishful thinking on that part. But it's good that Donna and Kirby put their collective foot down and stop this atrocity that's been our Miami football team this year. God bless Randy Shannon and all of his accomplishments he's done at "The U". But if it doesn't accumulate as wins on the football field, then there's got to be a change. God bless you Randy, now let's bring on Mike Leach as our new head coach!!!

Does Butch Davis still want the job back?

Posted by: jspot | November 28, 2010 at 12:05 AM

God, Please bring Green back to our blog. If you do exist........ GREEN!!! WAKE UP FROM YOUR SLUMBER!!!

Randy was and is classy, of very good character, got the kids to do the single most important thing that a college coach can do with his kids: Man up.
But along the way, games were lost, and he had a certain hand.
It's a shame. Had he done better with the Xs and Os, he had all the other attributes to be around and great for a long time.

I don't know who Manny's "sources" are, but I wouldn't be betting any money on the informatio they provide.

The University of Miami will NEVER hire Mike Leach...NEVER!

One other thing. Is it anyway that we change the sportwriters who cover the U with the change of coaching staff. The negative spins on articles by Manny and Susan during the Shannon era have been just as bad as the coaching. I am sure from talking to a number of recruits that we lost that the negative articles had an effect on their decisions to go elsewhere. If we want change lets change the whole picture. Go Canes!

mike leach is a problem waiting to happen. he is a great coach, innovative offensive mind, and very enthusiastic head coach. things miami needs. but a horrible pr man. gruden isnt gonna come out of retirement for just any job. he wants a big one with total control. an NFL job. I think we should take a shot at Bobby Petrino. Pro style offense. winning pedigree.( ok except atlanta) kids will always wanna go to miami and petrino could turn the canes around. but the best fit for miami is gary patterson at tcu. what is miami known for? their speed. what are tcu defense's known for? their speed. he recruits speed which you have a plethora of at miami. take the florida route get a mwc guy who knows speed. it worked out for the gators, as much as it pains me to say it did.

MY CANDIDATES:
TCU HC Patterson** GREAT HC DEFENSIVE MIND COACH
BOISE HC Petersen RESUME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
FSU DC Stoops* EXCCELLENT COACH LOOK @ FSU D ex-DB COACH DURING THE CHAMPIONSHIP YEARS
MISS ST DC Diaz UP & RISING COORDINATOR TRUST ME MISS ST D HAS A TOP 10 RANK DEFENSE
FIU HC Cristobal** MIGHT BE TOP CANDIDATE
NC HC Davis HE COULD COME BACK BUT DOUBT IT WITH WHAT TOOK PLACE @ NC
RU HC i forgot his name

Mike Bellotti The old Oregon coach should be #1 on the list followed by Brady Hoke, Sandiego St.

So far the suggestions I've liked in no particular order: Criteria (Coach that has overachieved with subpar Miami recruits)

1. UConn's Coach
2. Richt
3. Boise's Coach
4. Patterson
5. Mario (Not ready yet though)
6. Mullen (only if he can run a pro-style offense)

Some of the statements above reflect the outcome of the conflict of interest that exists at ESPN. Some of the statements above about Mike Leach are not true. Leach's contract was breached. Tech was denied a sovereign immunity claim in court. The depositions are public.

ESPN has refused any retraction; but read what their own Ombudsman had to say about ESPN's coverage;

Read what players and coaches said on learning about the situation before Texas Tech intervened to control what they said;

Listen to what Micheal Lewis (Moneyball, The Blind Side) said about both Leach's scheme and his players. He brought consistent winning and elevated Texas Tech from the Big XII South cellar to 3rd best overall with less than a third of the budgets of the bigger schools. After the 2008 season the recruiting landscape changed and the best was within reach.

Peterson unfortunatly seems to be very happy at boise. Same with patterson of tcu. They have turned down top programs looking for a head coach before. I guess manny is tweeting vanables of oklahmoa is a top candidate i think i can say i was hoping for a guy whod been a head coach in college. If u go after a top assistant doesnt will muschamp and kirby smart have to be considered? seems to me former saban coaches do pretty well in college.

They're the angry senior citizens that are pissed because they know they are a dying breed.

Hopefully the admin doesn't go for all your name brands and picks someone with based upon their skills and knowledge

San diego St.

You people need a coach with a Pirate Attitude... that coach is Mike Leach. He won't give a flying flip about anything other than holding athletes accountable to performance on the football field, and he will also make sure all thos thugs graduate! Not only that...but his offensive schemes with acutal talent will be impossible to be stopped. Look what he did at TTU in '08 with just 1 talented reciever (michael crabtree). Now imagine if there were 4 at once! and also a talented QB and big O-Line....only a decent defense would be needed...and you people would have yourself a national championship. If he could almost do it in Lubbock, TX....than by GOD, with the fertile recruiting grounds of South Florida...this is a no brainer...Hire Coach Leach! If you knew what was good for you!! You people need to stop believing the BS lies about Coach Leach!

stanford coach or mark no mike leach

Stufrogg, seriously - still with Leach. Are you his agent working overtime?

Brady Hoke or Mike Bellotti

Has anyone seen Oregon's offense? Why aren't we going after Oregon's head coach or Offensive Coordinator? Failing that, we need Butch Davis back. Jimmie won't do it, so stop dreaming. He's lost the "fire." The head man must have a fire in the belly, be a genius, be a teacher, be a microscopic detail-execution fanatic, be a workaholic-fanatic and be the best recruiter/motivator that ever lived. Gruden? Maybe...

Brady Hoke or Mike Bellotti
Those are my favorites

Yes! That's all I can say....yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantasma - FIU ain't even built yet, come back when you've finished your first project in a decade or so!

Thank you South Florida.

I like Shalala's new found b@lls!

Finally!! Feels like a win today even though UM lost.

Leach would have us in a BCS bowl NEXT YEAR.

The last go around we begged Schiano to take the job and he told us to take a hike...the names being bantered about are laughable if you really think they would consider coming here. Finding a new head coach with any credentials is going to be a major undertaking.

Do yourselves a favor and stop talking about all of those name coaches, because you are setting yourself up for a major disappointment'

NicaCane
Are you really going to try and convince someone by telling them that Richt has overachieved with the recruits he gets?
Georgia always gets the tops recruits and he does nothing with them
Come on you have to be able to bring something better then that to a blog

Brady Hoke or Mike Bellotti
Those are my favorites, look them up especially Bellotti.

I feel terrible for Randy. He bleeds green & orange, runs a clean program, and graduates his kids. Unfortunately the on the field product did not improve under his watch. I'm not sure if UM will be able to get anyone better, though. The fan support is lousy. The facilities are average at best. The pay is not there for a top-level coach. Maybe they can snag an up & coming coach, but most of the top shelf candidates are going to have better options out there. These aren't the 80s-early 90s Canes any more. Being a dominant program a decade ago doesn't make this an elite job. Good luck, UM; I've been a fan for close to 30 years, but this is rough and I don't know if it's going to get better any time soon regardless of who's running this program.

Come on, everybody wanted Coker because he was the player's coach, Everybody wanted Shannon cuz he bled orange and green..thats all I'm saying. They need to pick a new HC with a hurricane attitude that also has the skills and knowledge..not cuz they sound good

Nothing to see here,

You make me laugh. Richt is one of like 6 coaches I mentioned. He wasn't even number 1. Dude, you are lame. Thanks for playing though.

Vlady in LA you f*cking moron, that stadium was already built, UM is just leasing it, Shalala is superb at every part of her job except this one small part, there's 0% chance she'd ever be fired, and Jon Gruden can interview for any coaching job he wants in the country, no media contracts stipulate that you can't interview to get back into coaching if you want to!
