VIDEO: Canes react to Virginia Tech loss

SUN LIFE STADIUM -- Here is what they said after the game. Feast.

RANDY SHANNON'S TRANSCRIPT

Opening statement: "Toss loss against tonight Virginia Tech, a team that came out, played hard, played well tonight. Thought the basically key to the game was that we turned the ball over in the red zone and they didn't turn the football over tonight. And when you have those type of things happen in the game, bad things are going to happen. We couldn't capitalize on big plays. They capitalized on big plays. Nobody how you call it, it's not individuals. It's not a person or that person. Basically, when we had chances in the red zone we had two fumbles. When we had opportunities, deep balls thrown, we had opportunities. They capitalized on the long run coming out of the third quarter. We had opportunities. We couldn't capitalize on it. That's the nut of it and the way the game went. I thought the guys played hard, they stayed into it. Like anything, you can't turn the ball over against Virginia Tech. I thought special teams we were equal. That stayed the same. Offensively and defensively we had chances to win the game tonight.

On Travis Benjamin's big drop: "We had drops, big key situations in the game. We didn't capitalize on it. Not just him, we had some other plays in the game where we had some drops that could have been the difference in the game. They made the plays and we didn't. You watch it, it's heartache because the guys played hard. We couldn't come up with the right plays at the right time and they did."

On how Stephen Morris performed: "Turnovers. He did adequate, he didn't do great. He threw some interceptions in the game. I thought the first half, he managed the football game well. But like I said, the two turnovers in the first half really got us behind. Those two turnovers might have put six points or 14 points ahead of where we needed to be going to halftime. But when those things happen, now it sets you back. We came back fourth quarter, he pressed, threw some interceptions and things like that. Those things are going to happen when you start pressing a little bit."

On Lamar Miller cramping up: "He came back in the game, cramped up again. That's all I can tell you."

On Virginia Tech's big runs: "They had a big run in the [fourth] quarter they went ahead on. They capitalized on some big plays and we didn't. Hard what happened tonight. I can't tell you any other different way to explain it. They made the plays and we didn't."

On physical nature of the game: "It was a very hard hitting game. The players played very hard, physical. It was one of those games like when we play Virginia Tech all the time. The hits and those type of things are going to happen. Luckily everybody got up off the field and there were no serious injuries. I thought it was a physical game on both sides of the football all night."

On his decision to go for it on 4th and 1 up 7-0 in the first quarter: "We had momentum going and came up with a fumble. First down, we're OK. He fumbled the football and now it's a bad situation. We don't fumble the football, it's first and 10 ready to go and try to capitalize. Our offensive line was doing a good job running the football. We were getting 3, 5, 8 yards a crack. In those situations, because you have the momentum, you expect to get the two yards. Didn't expect the turnover, it's just part of football."

On being eliminated from ACC contention: "It's disappointing being eliminated from a chance at winning this side of this division. But we got a lot of little things we can look forward to. We have another game against South Florida next week and that will be senior night. We got some seniors on this team that did a lot on this team to get back to where we're at right now. They know we have a long way to go. But it's a start for them and a start for this University to really recognize those seniors because that senior class came in and played as true freshmen. Those guys are playing now and helped with the recruiting class. Without those guys on this football team, we wouldn't be where we're at now with this football team."

Recruiting!?!? Who wants to come to UM?

This program is going under water and Randy Shannon is the cinder block tied around it's ankle.

Oh thanks, it was Keith Jackson. I am not saying he was a bad announcer but U could tell that he liked the Big Ten schools and Notre Dame over us. I guess our bad boy image bothered him.

You know what, you hit it on the the head. These haters are little girls. Totally. I am not man enough to attend games and support my team but it is easy for me to b**** about it on the net. Wait, let me b**** on facebook because it is what I do.

Grow a pair Haters. The Canespace guys didn't even attend the game tonight. The ACC title potential on the line and none of those regulars were there. Half of them are bigger haters than sean wilson. But they are real fans because they can photoshop them catching bass.

This team deserved fans to show up. Before you criticize players about how well they did as players, ask yourself, how you did as a fan. I think 90% of you deserve an F.

Thats cool man, thats your decision. I just don't see wasting anymore time and talent on someone that has not improved our team thats all. Me, personally would have canned Coker after the 05 season, when our program was clearly declining.
The thing was by Jimmy's fourth year he had us ranked #1 in 85, and 86 before losing in the bowl games plus in 87 he won the National title.
I can see that U are loyal to Miami, and I can respect that as I am. But if U are loyal just to Shannon, my friend U are more than likely fighting a losing battle with no hope.

U are a complete moron if U think that Canes team played their best or brilliantly as U put it in that game against Notre Dame. They come in overconfident and lost to a team they would have beaten 9 out of 10 times. I can see that U are as stupid as the Head coach U support.
Man U do love losing. Do U acquire that over time or is it bred into U.

is it backwards racism if the only reason you are keeping your job is because of your race?

You know what, I am man enough to admit I am wrong about you. You are right about 85 and 86. But you gotta admit Jimmy started on a different level than Randy since he inherited a national championship team. I am not loyal to Randy as much as I don't want to restart a rebuilding process given the talent, especially on the OL. That line has the chance to dominate college football for three years. I am less sold on the defense though. But I don't wanna see a change when the talet is here. I wanna see the D Coordinator change though.

rogperu, No, its all racism. Dennis Erickson was on the hotseat after the 90 season when he went 10-2 but now we are content with 8 wins a year. WHo says we will get there. South Florida has a much better Head Coach than we have. So even though we are more talented than them Shannon will probably lose that game too.

RIGHT ON BROTHER!

These cowardly haters quit after the OSU game. Well, that's not even true...they quit at halftime of the OSU game. And since that time they've done nothing but slam the program and not one of them has gone to the stadium to support the team--real fans they are...NOT!!!

Ha. I'll take Randy and his staff 100% of the time over So Fla. Wanna bet?

SJMPARMAN, I agree.
Today I had a free ticket to go to the game and decided to stay home and do yardwork.
Why?
Cause I refuse to be part of the problem.
The only way we as fans have a chance to get the Trustees to make a change is by seeing empty seats and a discontent fanbase.
I really wish randy had been successful but he's .500 against the ACC, the second worst conference in America.
Imagine if we were in the SEC!

Urban Sees, ur an idiot.
No seriously, you are.
Im sure you get all self-righteous about backing randy but sooner or later u may look around and no will be next you (including randy).

We now have people overly excited about playing USF and going to nobody cares bowl.

It would be better for the shalala to just drop us down to D-2 status or straight up tell the fans, we dont care about winning (although i guess she has thru her actions and we refuse to get the message).

this is yet another sad day in what has become a once proud school.
I have gone to games since I was 10 yrs old.
Im 36 now.
The Canes have given me some great moments and i sorely would like to believe there will be more.
If their arent it was a good ride.
I love the U.
Sad to see it has been brought to its knees.

SJparman, thats cool of U man. Oh I do agree that Jimmy did start out on a different level with players that were part of a National championship team. Glad to know that U are a rational loyal to Miami fan that U seemed to be not one of these nimrod Shannon lovers. And I do agree that our offensive line could be great. WHat I don't understand is why they have not moved Seantrell to the LT spot so he can anchor it next year. I mean after we are out of the National Title race I would have started building for next year. Our defense in some ways looks better but for some reason we cannot stop runs up the middle consistently. I feel our coordinator doesn't adjust during the game to take away what the other teams offense wants to do. Take Va Tech U know they want to run the ball up the middle why not take that from them. On offense I feel in this game Whipple went to the pass too often and should have run it more but when U get behind by 2 scores in the 2nd half its hard to argue.
Man I feel U on the fact that I don't want to start over with a new rebuiling thing. I wanted to see Shannon succeed as much as anyone since he had played under Jimmy and coached with Butch. But alas it has not worked and I have not seen the progress being made on the field to continue on this way. Sometimes we just have to bite the bullet and start over the right way.

U are a complete moron if U think that Canes team played their best or brilliantly as U put it in that game against Notre Dame. They come in overconfident and lost to a team they would have beaten 9 out of 10 times. I can see that U are as stupid as the Head coach U support.

You simply have NO idea about anything you talk about. Now you are saying Jimmy Johnson brought the Canes to South Bend unprepared to play.

You are slamming one of the great teams and coaches to ever represent the "U". Jimmy and that team showed up prepared and inspired and if not for the officials would have beat what football historians call one of the great teams in college football history of that era at their house.

Please hater, I beg of you to make that stupid comment to Jimmy or one of the players from that great squad so they can kick your rotten teeth down your throat...a**hole!!!

I am asking the rest of you Canes fans to read what this moron is now saying about our great 1988 team led by the great Jimmy Johnson. This whack job is now making the same claims against our great players and coaches from the past that he makes against our current players and coaches...THIS GUY IS A HATER AND KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT CANES FOOTBALL...NOTHING!!!

I tell U what U give Holtz 4 years at that school and I guarantee that South Florida has at least a conference title before Shannon does. Remember Holtz is in just his 1st year there and this is year 4 for Shannon. Plus Holtz has 2 things Shannon doesn't have as a head coach, a conference title and bowl wins.
Oh and did London and Virginia not beat us just a few weeks ago, I would not take them lightly.

stop talking about 88.
we didnt win it that yr.
ND was the better team.
everything is settled on the field.
in the history of sports, the worse team has never won.
to the winner go the spoils.

Very beatable... ummmm, no. We own you, and have for quite some time. It's fun watching y'all who feel so entitled to be 'elite' suffer through only being able to remember what once was (while wondering if any of those 5 MNCs were earned without cheating).

The ACC is our conference. Y'all are welcome to stay, but don't make a mess of things by pissing and moaning every time you get served.

Oh really, and who is going to do it, might I ask? Jimmy had the team prepared they just were overconfident and he admitted it in the U documentary just like they were in 86 against Penn State. I am not slamming that team, I am merely calling it like it is u dumbass. And who is those Football historians U speak of. I would like to know. Everyone knows that Miami was the best team that year not Notre Dame. Also Notre Dame did not want to play us again because they knew we would put 50 up on them. U see people or things like U have no idea what it is to be a Cane. I assume U would say Dan Morgan and Gino Torretta have no idea about what being a Cane is either. Canes are about excellence and championships not losing and accepting it.
Enjoy losing dummy.

Like I said do U acquire that love for losing or is it bred into U?

So, that's how it works...you quit on the kids and roll up in a ball Timmy Tebow style and cry. Are all of you haters women? You haters are a bunch of androgynous cowards. Oh, boo-hoo my team didn't play well so I'm going to stay home and plant roses and hope my neighbor looks up my skirt when I bend over...boo-hoo!

Gee, I'm having my period. You cowardly haters have no idea what it means to standup and fight when times are tough. You carry around a white flag to wave if someone even gives you a bad look...truly pathetic!

HEY ROGPERU...BE A MAN FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE!!!

hokie?
you have an empty mantle for title that will never come.
enough said.

Onyx just out of curiousity have ya'll won any National titles in any sport? Who cares if they were won cheating or not, their ours.
Now I do have to admit this has become your conference but enjoy it while U can because we will have a real head coach one day hopefully where we can at least compete with U. Kudos to U guys today.

Who is selling the tin foil hats in here?

SOunds like U have alot of knowledge of losing and wearing skirts. Hey man its your life, live it as U see fit.

Entirely beatable? Please. The Hokies have owned Miami for quite a while now, having never been afraid of them in the first place. From the first time the 'Caines got kicked in the teeth in Blacksburg through tonight's reaffirmation of superiority, Miami fans have always been in a huff as they realize they're not #1 in their own conference... might not even be #2.

The ACC is Virginia Tech's conference; get used to it. Y'all are welcome to stay, but we'd appreciate if it you wouldn't make a mess of things by whining and wetting yourselves whenever our team serves yours another helping of humble pie.

I don't feel the loss for Berry, Hankerson, McCarthy, P Hill, Franklin, R Hill, Bosher (who flunked his senior season BTW), or Tyler Horn. This was their year to make a difference and, except for Horn, and Hank. none of them did it.

Like I said have U guys ever won a National Title in any sport? We got the part about U guys having the ACC and U do have a point but really do U guys know how to answer a question?

urban, have you even played football.
pop warner doesnt count.

this program no longer cares about winning.
hiring a coach like shannon and not putting any type of pressure on him shows that.
raising academic standards for recruits further complicates our sitiuation.

be a realist.
be pragmatic.
tradition is on ice til randy and donna are in the rearview!

urban, thats great that you are mediocre member of society and take watever society hands you.
dont worry man, soon you'll have health care too.
no need to work.
no need to fight for anything.
keep being extra medium!

hokie,
we cant hear you!
you need to have hardware to have a voice.
we'll listen to noles, gators, irish, trojans, even buckeyes.
we arent dust of hokies.
lift some crystal then you can share.
now go back to ur seat.

I don't know man, Berry and Hill have played hard and pretty good all year. McCarthy looked slow and Franklin doesn't know what a snap count is. Now Bosher I don't know what his deal is but U got to hand it to the kid he was the only bright spot we had for 3 years and that is one kicker not afraid to hit someone. He still is a great punter though.

Virginia Tech was "very beatable"?

(Cute how some fascist at the Herald keeps erasing this entirely legitimate comment; truth hurts, I suppose. Shameful, whoever you are.)

every team gets "cheated" by penalties. its not just us,... face it, we had 6 turnovers,... why do you think we really lost the game,... the team actually played quite well for the majority of the game. RS and Whipple finally figured out in the past few games how they should of been calling plays this year, RUNNING the ball more... I dont know if RS is the right guy for the job, i think he has the potential to be for sure, its just taking longer than us U fans want to wait. the real question to be addressed is how do we turn the ball over less,.. 3 fumbles in the first half, isnt going to win anyone a ball game. i'd love to see another receiver get a shot at starting ( sorry travis) i like the guy, but he's to inconsistent. i hope we get some LB's in that can run stop next year.

dey baaaaackk, hahahhaha

Are people really writing in to talk about penalties??? and the refs??? That's so stupid. If Miami was really good, they would win. Bad calls can cause an OT loss or something, but they do not cause a 14 point loss with 6 turnovers.

People who defend Shanon are too sentimental. The guy is great guy and D coordinator, and good recruiter. But he sucks as a coach. There is no evidence to prove the contrary. If a team makes the same mistakes all the time, and has no quality wins in 4 years, while being in the biggest hot-bead for highschool football in the country, he's underperforming. And his press conferences are brutal. He's in over his head. Period. You can not disagree with that if you're objective and use common sense.

Whoever said Virginia Tech ownes us is being absurd. They are better and have been for years, but save the hyperbole for the Hokie blog. Win one of your BCS games one year, and stop making the ACC look weak, then you'll have a little more amo.

Plain & simple, time for a new coach!
A coach that teaches college kids fundamentals & can motivate teenagers to believe in themselves. When they fail he coaches them more & don't throw them under the bus! Take the blame & learn how to coach Randy! It's amazing how many coaches have embarrassed us the last few years!
2 more games & hopeflly it's all over!

Oh good lord... the page 2 thing wasn't coming up and I never even noticed. lol... guess we can all be pretty stupid at times. ;)

Can Shannon even speak English? Did anyone even read the article and wonder what the h*ll he was going on about?

"Win one of your BCS games one year, and stop making the ACC look weak, then you'll have a little more amo."

1. ammo
2. Hokies 20, Bearcats 7 ring a bell?
3. You guys have lost 3 of your last 4 bowls, managing only to beat Nevada by 1 point.
4. What really makes the conference look weak is when Thug U brings a whopping couple of hundred fans to their bowl game.

"How many National Titles have U guys won?"

The same number as you have without cheating: 0.

Bottom line is we won't play VT when the refs cheat like they did. Time to play in a conference when we don't have to deal with it.

No refs cheated in favor of VT today, and you have no say over whether or not Miami stays in the ACC.

VT won, as usual of late. Get over it. Your "glory" days are over; Jimmy's not walking through that door anytime soon.

Yeah, Onyxhokie, I would be jealous and feel every victory was empty if I ha to go back to Blacksburg.

yooo dawgs, dis be wak as a mug, eyyybody knows dat da U is be bak. bbbahahahhahahhahhahhha

if the refs really have cheated da U this year its only fitting since da U cheated to get those titles.... pay for play, bbahahaha dey back.

miami... puttin da U in thUg

Defense can be real good but are dominant because they give up big plays and dont make the plays when needed (Virginia game)..Receivers drop to many passes and in big moments the O-line does not get the big push, gives up the sack, or there is a penalty...You can blame Shannon for a lot but not everything..Players need to make plays..BIG TIME PLAYERS MAKE BIG PLAYS IN BIG GAMES!!..

"we wouldbt be exactly were we are at" WTF does he mean by that?? at 7 4? with our best victoryu against 6 4 teams?? Cut the crap we are a mediocre football and that's all we will be be!! We are running a Vanderbilt type program! F U shannon and I hope if you really love this program so much you would please step down you sack of crap DOUCHEBAG!!!!

We have NFL talent up & down the roster no reason we should be making the same mistakes every year. Kids are not responding to Shannon. Maybe if we show some emotion on the sideline. He looks like he drank some bad milk. Grab kid by the facemask, yeall at whipple for bad play call. Scream at bosher for clanking another fg, get in benjaming face for droppoing a pass. Football is viloent emotional game. SHOWS SOME RANDY!!!! Look at Stoops, Saban you make a mistake on the field and they will have your ASS. Our team is lifeless because of our coach demeanor. We need to play with FIRE. Hopefully we will show up against USF. We have are whole recruiting class wavering basically and this game will at leash show we are still ahead of USF in the state. Peace
