VIDEO: Canes talk after USF loss

SUN LIFE STADIUM -- The regular season ended with a thud Saturday as the Canes lost to USF 23-20 in overtime. Here is some video:

RANDY SHANNON POST-GAME

Opening statement... "Today's game was one of those games you come out, fight, play hard each time. Had an opportunities in the red zone, couldn't convert all year long. That's been our stigma with this football team, getting in the red zone, couldn't convert, turning the football over in the red zone. Your sad to the seniors go out on not a good note. Guys on defense played hard, they kept us in the game the entire time. But like anything we had an opportunity on one of the drives to make a play, canceled out some points in that situation. Just down right now. That's how I feel right now. The players down. Seniors are down. Tough one. That's about all. I've kept saying it all year long, the same things been happening to us as a football team. You can't win games like that when those things continue to happen."

What were you telling officials on the last play... "That was between me and the official."

On why he started Stephen Morris... "Jacory just wasn't playing very well in practice this week. He wasn't in rhythm like he was, like we were used to. We knew were going to play him at some time during the course of the game. We didn't know when. We decided to go with him in the second half, see where he was at."

On what happened on Jacory Harris' interception at the end of regulation... "I don't know. I have to see it also on film, evaluate it."

On why he did not start Jacory Harris... "I said if he was ready as far as reps. I said that now. I said if he is practicing well, Jacory will start. I said he's the starter, but if he practices well, he will start. Now, other people might have misread what I said. But I said what I said."

On when Morris was told he would start... "Me and coach Whipple decided when we decided on playing him."

On why he called a timeout with 14 seconds left and UM on the Bulls' 31... "We knew we were going to get one more shot at it. It was a 50, 52 yard field goal. We were trying to get maybe five or six yards, something like that and make it a 40-something yard field goal."

On why he didn't run the ball to setup the field goal with two timeouts... "Why not run the ball? Our run game was not very good today -- besides Storm Johnson's long run. You take Storm Johnson's long run away from that game and we didn't do much in the run game. They were stuffing our run game pretty well today. So you have to take your chances with dinking and dunking to the receiver coming across the middle. Hankerson an out. LaRon doing those type of things today because they were really stuffing our run game.We got ourselves down by throwing the football with crossing routes and things like that. This last interception -- things happen."

On if the early offensive struggles were part of the kids coming out flat... "No, I don't think that. Defense kept us in the game, like I said. Offense couldn't run the football. We couldn't get nothing offensively. They did a great job stuffing our running game. We couldn't run it. The defense had to step up and keep us in the game like they did."

On UM's rushing struggles... "I have to watch film. Once I watch film and evaluate, I can tell you guys what it was."

On switching from Morris to Jacory... "We said we were going to give Jacory a shot. You guys are trying to make more than what it is. OK, you all continue to do it. Somebody, tells you it happened Sunday. That was on ESPN or whatever. Then it was always going to be from this point or whatever, I keep telling you guys two or three weeks ago, Jacory is the running starting quarterback for the University of Miami. I'm not going to put anybody in a situation where they aren't practicing very good, the way he should be practicing. If I'm wrong for doing that, tell me I'm wrong. But I'm going to look out for what's best for him and this football team. You guys want something different.

"Stephen wasn't doing nothing in the game. Jacory wasn't practicing well, we weren't going to start him. Now, you guys are going to ask me again and I'll have another question on it. This is my second time saying it."

How disappointing is the season... "It's always disappointing. You never want as a coach to be satisfied -- no matter what. No coach across the nation would be satisfied. I'm not satisfied, no. You only get satisfied until you win it all. That's when you get satisfication. If you're 10-2, you're happy, but you're not satisfied. You get never satisfied until you win it all."

On if he worries about his future... "That's you guys in here. You'll be discussing that all the time like you've been doing for the last six weeks. So..."

On if 7-5 is a step back... "Yeah, record wise we're not where we need to be. The only thing is that we improved some areas on defense. We finished second in the Coastal Division instead of fourth. But we didn't improve our overall record."

On what the mistakes have been all season... "Red zone, turnovers."

What will the team do now... "Go back, watch film, have a team meeting at 2:30, lay out what we have to finish school with and get ready for the bowl we have to attend."

On if all he was trying to do was finding a quarterback to win game... "That's all. You're just trying to find the best one and whoever is hot at that time is who you go with. We feel like we have two quarterbacks, they're making plays, doing certain things, but they're also making mistakes. You always get discouraged by that. But you want to keep grinding them so they can be the best that they can be and give us the best opportunity."

Does it matter who starts... "Everybody in here thinks it does. Not drilling you guys. But it's the truth. You guys always care about who starts. Kendall Thompkins started against Georgia Tech. Nobody really cared about it. They didn't realize Hankerson didn't touch the field the first 10 plays of the game at Georgia Tech. So, it's a big thing about who starts and doesn't start and I don't know the reason why."

Feel bad for Coach......Glad he got his scratchola in advance.

i feel bad for him also but it's only business. Randy needs to go. Great guy great cane but it's time to move on.

Has anyone noticed when he comes up on the big screen at the games , usually doing a skit for UM athletics , he looks JUST LIKE that Colonel in the movie "Undercover Brother" that was drugged up , talking and in a monotone.

Breaking news Breaking News
Shannon might be gone. Rivals/canesport.com is reporting that the school president called a important mandetory meeting about 45 minutes ago. im subscribe to rivals.com. They will vote on Shannon future by Sunday night. This is not good The pressure was really put on her after the game. Some of you got your wish.

WHIPPLE PLAY CALLING REALLY DONE HIM IN. hE SHOULD HAVE RAN THE BALL WHEN WE WERE IN FIELD GOAL POSITION INSTEAD OF LETTING JH THROW THE BALL FOR AN INTERCEPTION. WHIPPLE PLAY CALLING WHEN JH IS IN THE GAME IS SUSPECT. WE HAD THAT GAME WON. WE WERE IN FIELD GOAL RANGE AND HE THROW THE BALL.

Give Shannon what he want money wise and get Gruden in. Hurry and get him in so he can recruit. There is no time to waiste.

I'm afraid if Randy is fired, the program and recruiting for this year will take a step back. He has brought some good talent to Miami. I wonder if he needs a fews more years to really mold his product. I want to win now too, I understand those wanting him fired although.

This guy does not no how to motivate a team. You see how pathetic he looked in his press conference, needs to go and take some of those sorry ass coaches with him!

Just watched his video and shannon NEEDS to make the media UM's friend. He is to defensive and RARELY gives a straight answer.

Not a good thing

I just think he and Whipple dont jell.

I believe Whipple needs to gomore than randy

Somehow we cannot find an OC that can get these players to play without turning theball over

fact is- and you all do not call me racist because in fact I am a minority:

If this is a pro style offense, we need a pro style QB. A big boy, white qb that has a strong arm, and is football-smart. You say, Kyle Wright? Kyle Wright was not football smart. Kirby freeman was not football smart J12 is not only not smart, he is also stupid
Stephen Morris is just inexperienced.

Why cant we get a Luck, or a Kellen Moore, a Brantley, someone like that.

Instead we have an interception machine who throws to "areas" insteasd of throwing to receivers. Who taughthim to do that? Whipple. I guarantee it.

Now, the most humiliating aspect of this loss is that it comes in the heels of Hocutts announcement that the USF rivalry will not be renewed past 2013- hint: You aint good enoughfor Um. Guess what- they beat you.

FIU wins a conference. UCF probably will. FSU has a shot. Miami and UF are now th low in the totem pole. Who would hav thought?

I hate this.

Randy Shannon should get 1 more year to correct this ship - just my opinion.

This game should not have even been that close, and as for the play calling step in and say were running the ball at that time, that's what should have been done.Either way you look at it this guy has done nothing for the program in four years and next year want be anything different

At Miami we expect to win every year. Coker left this thing a mess a true mess. Maybe Saban could of done a bit better, but he's a quitter (see Dolphins)Randy is a Cane, he loves the Canes more than us fans, I think he will get it right, I just don't think these things turn around over night, I think we will be better in the long run keeping him.

Jacory may be the man next year. His decision making needs to improve. Look how Carolina QB was TJ Yates was a interception machine till his Senior yr.

He has more TD's than any other Cane other than Dorsey.

Let him improve his team, grass is not always greener on the other side.

Just a thought...I may be wrong...

Notsure to be honest...Man I miss being in big bowl games..

Of course I want to win now...Yet a portion of my brain feels we will if we just remain loyal to Randy

How sweet it would be to win with a Home Grown Cane like Randy, I truly feel if he starts really winning, he will get a lock down and practicly hand pick his players once he gets his machine working properly

Jacory Harris dad was griping this week about his son not getting a fair chance. How do you feel now jerk!

He is done.

Who would be a good replacement?

Who does Miami replace Randy with? Seriously, I'm open to improvement.

Who would be a good replacement?

Gruden is a perfect fit. Just got to dig deep in the pocket. He brings in a great D mind. He still live in Florida I think. NFL is in trouble of not playing next yr. Just give RS what he want and bring in Gruden or Leach. Trust me Leach have learned his lesson from what he did. I know he saw other coaches act crazy this year.

If Shannon was going to be fired, he would know by now and the successor is in place (Whipple). What about Mark Richt or (dare I say) Donnie Soldinger?

For kids who say they love their coach, they sure layed down for him today. He was fired because they didnt show up (his fault, perhaps). Whipple sure had lil jack chucking it up today too while lil stevie was handing it off (fair playcalling???) How hard is it too look at your OC and tell him to call a running play to set up the game winning FG regardless of the running game being stuffed all day? That falls on the HC.

Nevertheless, the witch hunt is apparently over and you Shannon Bashers now have your wish (though I can't argue in his defense anymore). Oh becareful what we wish for, Miami fans.:-)

Were you at the game? The reason I ask is after the interception Whipple grabbed the receiver and blasted him for not running the out pattern that was called (he was motioning the out pattern to make his point).

I know some don't like the facts to get in the way of blasting Jacory, but it was clear the play was based on timing and Jacory is coached to throw BEFORE the receiver makes his break. Unfortunately on the interception the receiver ran the wrong pattern.

That one play did not make or break today's debacle. The lack of effort on both sides of the ball was stunning. Getting beat by a second string walk on QB is beyond the pale.

RIVALS SAYS SHANNON AND STAFF TO BE FIRED ON SUNDAY.

MY FIRST THOUGHTS ARE: WHO'S GONNA REPLACE COACH SHANNON AND WILL HE BE ABLE TO RETAIN THE SAME ACADEMIC SUCCESS.

IN MY OPINION: SHANNON SHOULD NOT BE FIRED. THIS IS A BAD MOVE FOR THE ADMINISTRATION. COACH SHANNON SHOULD NOT BE FIRED BECAUSE OF THE PLAYER'S EFFORTS. YES I KNOW, ITS COACH SHANNON'S RESPONSIBILITY TO PREPARE HIS PLAYERS, BUT HOW MANY HAVE UNDERPERFORMED BECAUSE OF RATING SYSTEM THAT BLOATS THE PLAYER'S EGO.WHAT'S MORE IS THE ASSISTANTS THAT FAILED TO PREPARE THE PLAYER. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT FOR FORMER CANE THAT BLEEDS ORANGE AND GREEN SUCH AS RANDY SHANNON TO COME IN AND COMPETE

AN EVEN MORE IMPORTANT SITUATION IS WHO IS GOING TO BE HIRED. WAIT AND SEE. THIS IS SAD NEWS

Randy Shannon should be aloud to finish out his contract at the university. He has done excellent things there, and is the ideal coach for the Hurricanes. No change is needed, really guys.

The coaching staff will be fired on Monday. Go to canesport.com. THIS IS THRU YAHOO.COM

THIS TEAM HAS BIGGER PROBLEMS THEN THE COACH. SHANNON HAS BEEN GETTING HEAT THE LAST FEW WEEKS. YOU WOULD THINK THAT THESE PLAYERS WOULD HAVE CAME OUT TODAY AND HAD A BETTER PERFORMANCE. EVERYONE IS PUTTING TO MUCH BLAME ON THE COACHES. I'VE SAID ALL YEAR THAT THE TALENT LEVEL IS NOT AS GREAT AS THE FANS THINK IT IS. WHEN YOU HAVE PLAYERS THAT CONTINUE TO DROP PASSES, GET FLAGGED FOR HOLDING, GET BLOCKED OUT OF THE PLAY THAT IS THE PLAYER, NOT THE COACH. I'M A BELIEVER THAT IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A COACHING CHANGE THERE NEEDS TO BE A PLAN IN PLACE. IN OTHER WORDS A COACHING CHANGE COULD MEAN A STEP BACKWARDS INSTEAD OF FORWARDS. WE'VE GOT A COACH WHO HAS HIS DREAM JOB. I'D RATHER HAVE THAT THEN SOMEONE COME IN AND STAY A FEW YEARS WAITING FOR HIS DREAM JOB.

Shut the hell up already and go cry over at your Gator blog about your garbage season that had you as preseason #4
Maybe Urbie can fake another illness so you trailor bums can feel sorry for him again

@NOTHING TO SEE HERE: GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD , I AM NOT SEAN MOTHERFUCKIN WILSON. I'M NOT EVEN WHITE. THERE WONT BE NOTHING TO SEE IF YOU KEEP COMING AT ME WITH THESE FALSE ACCUSATIONS.

Fire Shanon and Whipple now! We cannot anymore of this coaching staff. They are not a wining combination, and worst then do not know what to do next.

Thry are lost in space!! Shanon and Whipple sdo not what to do when the going gets tough.

HOWEVER, the players played today without fire in their belly!! They were listless and dead today, as if they wanted Shanon fired. Shame on them, they are worthy to be called Canes. Absolutely pittiful, and shameless.

In addition to a new coach we need disciplie to become an integral part of this team. You either give 120% effort, or you go to the doghouse until you are ready to give 150%. to the TEAM. This is a team sport.

emilio/sean
relax racist im sure little Urbie will do the same thing he did last year
Maybe a few more arrests or women being told they are about to die but other then that everything will be fine for you traliorville bums

It's unfortunate that Randy Shannon and his staff just couldn't get the most out of the current players... either that or they're horrible recruiters and everyone on our roster came out of high school way overrated. I suppose it's entirely possible the latter is true. But it's hard to lay the blame at the players' feet when recent graduates (who underachieved here) are thriving in the NFL.

Randy returning UM to the national spotlight would have been a fairy tale story the likes of which is rarely seen in sports these days, and I'm sure even the biggest Shannon detractors would have truly enjoyed seeing that happen.

I agree Shannon and Co should go at this point; I've been saying since mid-last-season that the improvement just isn't there. That said, DLK has a valid point. We may get a better coach out of this debacle, jury's still out. But we will definitely NOT get someone who loves the job or WANTS to make it work as much as Coach Shannon. Maybe getting out of the pressure cooker will be good for him. Hopefully he lands on his feet somewhere and really finds his way as a head football coach.

This guys suggest Dan Mullen - with Manny Garcia (Son of Mayor) or Mark Richt. Both sound like a good start. I'm not a fan of bringing Gruden to Miami. He got fired for a reason - it was not because he was winning.

Headline: Sources- Sannon and staff to be fired on Sunday

Coach Randy Shannon has met with Donna Shalala and been told that he and his staff are being fired, multiple sources told CaneSport Saturday night.

Word of the decision began filtering through players and coaches in the mid-evening hours that followed the stunning overtime loss to South Florida on Saturday.

Players were said to be very upset, feeling that they let Shannon down.

Stay tuned for more details on this developing story

In my earlier posts, I've posted as disgusted as the next person.

However, Randy Shannon should get one more year but with changes in the Assistants.

1. Receivers coach
2. Linebackers coach

And please, hire a QB coach! We don't have a QB coach and it shows that we desperately need one. Yeah, Whipple was Ben's coach but he's now the OC, he can't work on QB mechanics and film along with getting the O to gel!

Give Shannon another year and let him change as much as he needs underneath him.

THATS EVEN FUNNIER THAN YOUR LAST POST. "TRAILORVILLE" ... YEA RIGHT YOU WISH. YO SOY DEL PINCHE BARRIO ATZLAN PUTO.... JUAREZ RIFA AQUI CULERO

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would ask for Shannon to get one more year. He's had four years to show progress. This year has been the opposite of progress. He's departure is a necessary one, giving him one more year would not change a thing.

Keep randy as D-cord. and most will be happy.

Harbaugh, Petrino, Skip Holtz, Cristobol, Boise State's coach, Richt, Norm Chow, Chudzinski.

I can go on, but all of these names are reasonable. Let's get one.

IF it is true then good. Thank god if it is true that we do not have to endure another miserable season like we have since 2003. I am sick of losing with these losers as head coaches. But I will believe it when I see it from someone with the University. Lets get back to what we are mean't to do and thats win championships.

I will take any of them you listed Chicago Cane. Any one of those guys would be an improvement.

Pllllllease do not Fire that Genius Coach Shannon !

Foster, assistant with something to prove and over achieves with the type of recruits he gets. Fit's the mold I would hope the administration is looking for. Boise State coach, would be a dream.

that's it Cane tards... ingore the abortion that is Ur team and focus on the Gators.

remember when Florida trucked S. Fla. and U said the Bulls sucked ? Well, U were right for once ...

Done . Espn just reported it with breaking news. will be on after game

I read Gus Malzahn's name on another blog. Intresting offense..read up

http://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2010/7/21/1555582/auburn-a-primer-on-the-gus-malzahn

While I would like to see Shannon be successful if the rumors of his firing are true I wouldn't weep, this has to be done in order to stop the slide into mediocrity that we're seeing. The staff as a whole should be terminated at this point and an experienced and hungry coach from a smaller program should be brought in alla JJ and Erickson. But if by some miracle Shannon is aloud to keep his job then Whipple must be fired at once, the play calling this year has been bizarre at best.

The Canes will be much better next year with college football's best offensive line, college football's best stable of running backs (Miller will have a break-out season) 2 talented, experienced quarterbacks who will be throwing to a wide receiver corp that is very talented, big, tall, fast, experienced and agile, a defensive secondary that will be a shut-down group, a defensive line that will dominate opponents.

The Canes will be in the National Championship hunt next year.
