As the coaching search moves along...

Thoughts and observations from Wednesday as the search for a football coach at the University of Miami shifts from Jon Gruden to other candidates:

> Missing out on Gruden really is not a big deal for the Hurricanes. As I wrote in my previous blog, I never really thought a guy who has spent the last 19 years in the NFL (as broadcaster, head coach and assistant) would want to handle or be able to handle all of the intricate details of being a college coach. It's a lot more responsibility than being an NFL coach.

Dan Mullen Wednesday, I spoke to former Bucs QB Shaun King, who played for Gruden, and he told me flatly the Hurricanes were crazy for wanting him. King just didn't think it was a good mix at all. In the end, I think Gruden was not as interested as many of us were first led to believe. But the fact athletic director Kirby Hocutt went after him shows me at least UM is serious about finding a big name, quality coach.

> Most believe the next name on UM's list is Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, who was supposed to be in town today to visit a recruit. Mullen didn't end up making the trip because he's battling the flu. But I've heard through a third party who spoke with one of Mullen's assistants that the former Gators offensive coordinator believes he already has a better job. He's coaching in the SEC and the school's facilities are better than UM's. As of Wednesday night, we had not heard that Mullen spoke to anyone from UM involved in the hiring process. But that may happen today as Hocutt and his Chuck Neinas continue to make their rounds.

> As it stands, I don't think we're going to see a resolution to this job very quickly. Since Gruden didn't surprise us and agree to taking the job today, I think this search will continue well into next week. The Hurricanes have already called off their first recruiting weekend Dec. 10 and 11. I think the target date to really find a coach is before the second recruiting weekend (Dec. 17 and 18) so that a new coach/staff can be in place to court those players. When Larry Coker was fired a day after the end of the 2006 regular season, it took UM a little more than two weeks to hire Shannon as their next coach.

> As for Shannon, he apparently is very interested in becoming the new coach at the University of Minnesota. ESPN’s Bruce Feldman said he spoke with Shannon Tuesday, and wrote Shannon would love to stay in college coaching because “you can make a difference in young people’s lives.” A few weeks ago, before Shannon was obviously fired, there was an a strange internet report that Shannon might be interested in going to Minnesota. You have to wonder if he knew what was coming and was already planning his next move. By the way, Colorado and Vanderbilt are two other schools reportedly interested in Shannon.

Mike Leach > Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, who is looking for a job, got a ringing endorsement from Donald Trump Wednesday. Trump sent a written message to UM President Donna Shalala praising Leach on the front page of a Palm Beach Post Sports Section. Leach took to the airwaves Wednesday on ESPN radio and then sent his own message.

"I think it is a great opportunity for anybody," Leach said of the UM job. "They have got a great tradition and all the rest. A great recruiting base and you could do big things at Miami.

"I have had success everywhere else, you know and I think it just has to do with everybody doing their role. See Texas Tech started out in the border conference, which was a really soft conference, then Texas Tech went to the Southwest Conference, which was a pretty good conference, then they went to the Big XII, which was a great conference, but in that ten years that me and my staff were in the Big XII we won more bowl games than all of the years that Tech had the rest of the years combined. You know so we have got a pretty good team and a good plan."

> Leach isn't the only guy who wants the job. I've heard from reliable sources current Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville would be very interested in the job.

> The Sun Bowl might not be as interested as they once were in taking the Hurricanes. We're hearing Boston College could end up taking the spot. It all likely depends on the opponent. The Sun Bowl would love for a UM-Notre Dame showdown. But at this point, it's more likely Notre Dame goes to the Champs Sports Bowl (had the Canes beat USF they would be there). Now if Notre Dame doesn't end up at the Sun Bowl, UM could slip down the pecking order. As it stands, the Sun Bowl could also be short on Pac-10 teams and take a Big East school as a potential replacement.

> The Hurricanes lost their first recruit since the firing on Wednesday when Brockton, Mass. cornerback Albert Louis-Jean decommitted from the Hurricanes. UM is down to six commitments now.

I too am mystified by Trestman's name being considered. Nothing on his resume suggests he'd be qualified. The only plausible explanation is that there is a very powerful minority in South Florida that share Trestman's, uh, heritage, if you catch my drift - and they are strident nepotists.

RealCanesFan:

Just won his second straight Canadian Super Bowl the Gray Cup.

Well balanced teams.

That's what he's done.

I'm not saying he's the one for the U but to put him down while not know anything about his career is well, well it lacks credibility.

As far as OC's at UM he is one of the best they've had.

WOW GARY FERMAN, MANNY NAVARRO AND ALL UM MEDIA OUTLETS SHOULD BE A SHAMED!!!This Jon Gruden business is a prime example of why social media sucks! You’ve got these amateur armchair journalists on twitter and blogs spreading erroneous information and it compromises the journalistic integrity of individuals who are truly out there pounding the pavement trying to get the real story for the fans. To all you idiots out there posting false information on twitter or blogs you can go straight to hell. If this nonsense continues the entire journalism business will be compromised and will become a complete joke!!! The few people in this business that have any integrity at all need to step up and take the lead and help put an end to this nonsense or at the very least marginalize these morons posting this garbage!

Mullen's problem is simple:

If you don't have a Tebow or a Newton then his type of offence will suck.

And to think you can recruit a "Tebow" or "Newton" every other yr is absurd. To think that this quality QB will come around every other yr is equally as absurd.

That is partially why it's considered a gimmick offence and counter The U's system.

Bring in MIKE LEACH!!!!!

Being a UGA fan, Richt is staying at Georgia, makes 3mill yr, plus he stated he is staying.
Good for Leach filing lawsuit to CLEAR his name. Takes a pair to file a lawsuit against ESPN, but you would do it also if you wanted to clear your name. Like others said, go read the documents on Dallas newspaper website, it is a lot of spin, between Leach and the TT administration.

With UM having only 6 verbal commitments as of now, which is really sad, I would rather have someone like Leach to coach team who would coach up talent, then any other coach out there.

The pirate thing took a life on its own..The student body of TT heard he likes the mentality of pirates and they made a big deal of it. He went along with it to get the red raider fans a "us against the world" mentality.
His players do not get in trouble, high graduation rates for student athlete, won in big 12, filled TT stadium, and won bowl games.. Who cares if doesnt kiss the alumni ass? Tells people like it is? Hire Mike Shula if you want a country club style football team.

Winston Moss..give me a break.

Someone is going hire him(Leach) and it will pay dividends immediately..Miami is the perfect fit.
However, UM is no longer seen as a powerhouse; again with only 6 verbal commitments!!

Jerry Glanville~~~Elvis's man

Hes' building depths in Minnesota. Who will win a NC first Minnesota or Miami?

Manny, run the presses, let's get the HIRE MIKE MOVEMENT running.

Load him up on Wellbutrin, in order to come down the stiffs on the UM-board, but the fact is the man can flat out COACH!!!

Cudos on the Canadian Super Bowl, but cmon really the Candian Super Bowl. Auburn or Alabama could probably win that. I remember when he went to NC State a few years back, that lasted 1 year and by the way he was never the OC here, QB coach....Big Difference

BUUUUTCH DAAAAVIS!!!!! Failing a Gruden hire, why is admin considering anyone else??!!

I have heard about his ties to the program and this and that...The guys was here for 2 years 83/84 I think. Just think we could do alot better than Trestman is all.

Miami player and coach Rob Chudzinski is going to be pushed hard by some UM insiders and former players to AD Kirby Hocutt for the Canes vacancy. Here's why as explained by one former UM player: "The guy has won national championships there as a player and as a coach. He was a great student there. He has called plays in the NFL. Above all of that, he loves The U. and it comes through when he talks. He could walk in ANY living room in America and convey that message. He is smart and passionate. If you look at what he's done and what he's been a part of the last eight years, I think you would be hard pressed to find a guy with that kind of resume.

He will pass though. No one wants to work for this second tier university and there uneducated fan base. Who wants to coach in front of 27k?

Hire Uncle Luke and cut the Pitbulls loose!

Chud!!! Now there is a name I haven't heard much. Now we are talking when it comes to any former Canes being considered.

He will pass though. No one wants to work for this second tier university and there uneducated fan base. Who wants to coach in front of 27k?

Uneducated? It's THEIR not THERE turd tard.....

Yea, QB coach.

He left here and worked under Bill Walsh at the 49ers. Then went into the investment business for many yrs. Did vary well. Retired. Then wanted to get back into football. I don't know if NCS was his re-entry to football coaching, but may have been. Anyway, obviously he has grown. I'm no supporter of the CFL but to put down the guy just because he reached the top in the CFL is disingenuous to say the least.

The idea is that he has grown and has been successful.

Not that I'm push the guy, and those visions of Bud Grant going to the SuperBowl 4 or 5 time and losing each does scare me, but he has had recent success.

On my list, he is not at the top. But he is on it.

Leach isn't even being interviewed, so it's not going to happen.

Butch left here, you think they would hire him back?

Jerry Glanville! No really. Or was that Elvis?

Third, I respect your opinion, but in my opinion he would be at the very, very, bottom of the list.

Wow!!! What UM football has become.

Our head coaching search is going about as well as our recruitng, nobody wants to come but Leach.

Yea, I thought of Chud as well. Wow. Where has He been hiding.

I remember before they hire RS Chud's name came up. Chud said at the time he was only interested in pro ball.

Maybe his mined has changed.

As for me, Schnells is the only non-head coach we've had that has been successful here.

(Coker was not a success with his recruits)

So, I favor previously successful head coaching experience.

Go Canes!

"Any hope of Miami's return to dominance in college football ended in a smoke filled room when Donna Shallala cut an unspecified deal to move to Sun Life Mortuary.

Unfortunately, I'm beginning to think this is accurate. Herbstreit was on w/Joe Rose yesterday and said the same thing. When someone who is unbiased notices it, we have a problem.

F-()-k Gruden.

Go take your .500 coaching record and superbowl-ring-with-another-coaches-team back-to-the-NFL.

That was not me. That was the racist troll blogger - no worries though, I have been on the Gator Clause all day fighting for the Canes good name. We will bring the racist blogger to justice. I am sure our new coach(preferably Rex Ryan) will help me fight the good fight on the blogs!!!!!!!

What about Randy Shannon?

He's a UM guy, I believe he was the defensive coordinator for the Coker teams in the 2000s.

I think he'd really be able to recruit well down here - if he just got some good coordinators he could really make some noise down here.

Hopefully Minnesota doesn't snatch him up first!

He will pass though. No one wants to work for this second tier university and there uneducated fan base. Who wants to coach in front of 27k?

Wow, still showing what an obsessed moron you are? I really annoyed you by calling you out and then wiping out Gator Clause, I see.

Uneducated? Our school is the highest ranked in the state. Second Tier? More football titles than any other school in the state.

And the fact that you do not know the difference between "there" and "their" just shows that your momma was right about you when she said you would amount to nothing, Sean Wilson.

You post as me more often than I post here. You really are an obsessed loser with mother issues. No wonder your daddy abandoned you, he couldn't take the shame of what he created.

ONE GUY and ONE GUY ONLY! That is BUTCH DAVIS. He brought us back from death to be THE U again. He experienced the NFL and will be happy to be back at THE U. This time BUTCH would be here for a long time. G.B.B.H.!!! Get Butch Back Here!!!

Third, He is the Assistant Coach for the Chargers right now. Hard to say if he would want to come back or if he is even a candidate.

Guys, money talks!!! If they are really going to shell out the big bucks like is being reported we will get a good coach. Fans will come back if we are wining. Even when Dorsey, Shockey, etc were here their were nights with only 40/50,000 in the stands. Just the way it has always been in Miami, but 27,000 is just unacceptable.
No way they can ever re-create the atmosphere at the OB but word is changes will be made to Joe Robbie to make it more Football friendly once the Marlins are gone. For the record I will never set foot in the Marlins new stadium!!!!Never!!!!!

gregg doyel can go f*** himself. randy made a bowl game for 3 straight years? hooray! what an accomplishment! NOT. moron doesnt realize this is The U.

reading that article made me want to pay a visit to his house. probably the dumbest thing ive ever read.

@BAWHAHAHA Its actually "there" NOT "their". "Their" indicates possession, while "there" refers to a place (concrete or abstract),to indicate the existence of something, or to mention something for the first time. Perhaps you should check yourself & not worry so much about others.

ONE GUY and ONE GUY ONLY! That is BUTCH DAVIS. He brought us back from death to be THE U again. He experienced the NFL and will be happy to be back at THE U. This time BUTCH would be here for a long time. G.B.B.H.!!! Get Butch Back Here!!!

i second the motion. people need to get over him leaving for the nfl. jimmy and schnells left for other leagues too bfd. the guy made us elite again even while on probation. 2001. greatest team in college football history. BUILT BY BUTCH DAVIS.

My list of coaches for THE U

Rex Ryan
Bill Belichick
Tony D'Amato (Miami Sharks)
Hugh Freeze (Briarcrest)
Tony Dungy
Tom Flores

Come one Holcutt - thsre coaches will fill the stands and bring back national respect to THE U.

Also, please contact the Rock. His new movie Faster ain't doing too well. We could use him as a Swagger coach if you Smmmmmmelllllll what I am cookin'

Butch would be nice, but do you think they would really bring him in with everything UNC is still facing by the NCAA. Really good chance they go on probation for a while after the season is completely over.

i think the alumni need to do their best to reach out to gruden, butch, harbaugh, and richt to try and convince them to come here. let them know why UM is a good place for them to work based on their current situations.

potential nfl lockout, ncaa sanctions, big time program, a fresh start. all reasons those coaches should come here.

To all those who think Leach would be good for U of M, I have one question: ARE YOU CRAZY?!!!!
Look at the way he abused the players at Texas Tech. If the U of M hires this idiot, there will be so many NCAA infractions that the U of M will be reeling from. U of M needs to eat crow and hire Shannon back(which would never happen). No matter whom they hire, unless it was Tony Dungy(agree - another longshot), the U of M will have a very L O N G season - can't see them winning a BCS bowl until 2050; can't see them winning an ACC championship until 2020(if they're still in the ACC by then); and can't see them having a winning season until maybe 2018 - 2019 if ever. Either way, the U of M's best days are behind them, and if U of M President listens to Trump, she's an elite idiot!!!! Neither one of them have played football; knows about football, and should stay out of it. come to think about it, maybe the Trump and & the UM president should both get married & run WWE - they'd be perfect for that!!!!

People -

Gruden - San Fran or Dallas
Harbaugh - Michigan or NFL
Richt - not leaving
Butch - no shot b/c of Shalala
Uncle Luke - still available no hits since 1994

Edsall is the man!!!!

WWE...hmmm

How about the Undertaker for Coach. He never loses in Wrestlemania which easily translates to NCAA. Bonus: His name begins with a "U"

smillerdegnan Susan Miller Degnan
by Manny_Navarro
Gruden to me about U: "This was just an exploratory meeting. There was nothing ever really serious about this

"F" you Gruden.

Butch would be nice, but do you think they would really bring him in with everything UNC is still facing by the NCAA. Really good chance they go on probation for a while after the season is completely over.

Posted by: RealCanesFan | December 02, 2010 at 01:47 PM

And what is Butch's record? With all that "Great NFL Talent" he couldn't equal RS's record?

I don't think so.

michelle502....Go back to the GayThurd site!!!

Agreed Third...No doubt the guy can recruit still left to be determined if he can coach that talent.

Mike Shula - might work for U of M. Also, to the person that said that if they don't hire the right person, there will be no recruiting class - totally agree. Its starting to happen now - one recruit pulled his name out and I believe that that is only the first of many - won't be surprised to see most of the kids who are on the U of M football team take their chances and sit out a year for another school rather than play for a school who did Coach Shannon the way they did. Gruden - no way, no how. Anyway, he would have never cut it with the kids - the football team will never have no reason to trust whomever they bring in. Granted, they have a job to do, but you have to be able to build trust to get anything done. And U of M ripped it out from under them. As for Shannon - i will ROFL if he gets a job b/f U of M gets a coach!!!!

As much as we like Randy's story he was not building depths.

OK, seriously, as an FSU and UT fan, I'm really hoping that Miami doesn't hire Leech. I know that he had a way of making Lubbock almost impossible to play in. He routinely beat OU and UT in Lubbock and this was with a school that had to recruit against those two and A&M on a constant basis. Being one of the top dogs in a state at UM, he's going to get better players to play in the system.

And for all the people worried about your NFL players, I believe Wes Welker and Michael Crabtree are both products of his system.

Leech is known for filling stadiums, getting fan bases interested, having a larger than life personality and creating an undenying swagger for his teams. I'm not sure there's any part of that description that doesn't fit with what Miami used to be about. And what it's been lacking since the program cleaned itself up.

this is one ignorant dude. get life you loser

u do realize butch is at a basketball school right? a conference doormat? what about the success he had here while dealing with ncaa sanctions? the admins need to put pride aside and see if he has any interest in coming back.

MIAMI's Solution is CHARLIE STRONG!!! Great Recruiter and coach..Why is HE NOT CONSIDERED or Interviewed for this JOB!!!
