Canes meet, wait, watch as search goes on

The Miami Hurricanes met as a football team for the first time since Sunday, the day they were informed as a team by athletic director Kirby Hocutt that Randy Shannon had been fired as coach. Although internet reports surfaced saying the team meeting Thursday might be for players to meet their new coach, it wasn't.

Finals "We just had a meeting to go over academics, make sure the guys get their stuff done academically," sophomore cornerback Brandon McGee said. "Emotionally it's been tough. When you take a guy like coach Shannon away from the program, away from kind of what he built, it's not easy. It's been emotional but I feel like our coaches prepared us for moments like this and we're able to prepare for what's next."

Next for the Canes? Final exams and a whole lot of studying. The team won't practice again at Greentree until Dec. 11. In the meantime, McGee said, players have been working out and trying to refocus after a 7-5 season. Oh yeah, and they've been hearing plenty of rumors about who their next coach might be, too.

"We don't really pay attention to it too much. I think the fans feed into it much more than we do," McGee said. "Everyday we hear a different name.

"The only name I kept hearing was Jon Gruden. I was like 12 years old when he won the Super Bowl with Tampa Bay. I'm pretty much open to anything. Whatever coach they bring in, I'm sure they'll bring in the best guy to win."

Gruden all but ended any speculation he'll become UM's next coach on Thursday when he said he was willing to help the Hurricanes find a new coach during a teleconference on ESPN.

The news shocked at least one Hurricane -- defensive end Adewale Ojomo. "Wow," Ojomo said. "I was thinking coach Gruden might come in. Nobody told us that in here. But those were the rumors."

For the most part, players said they really don't care who among the current candidates gets hired. They just want a good coach.

"A coach that cares about his players," defensive end Olivier Vernon said of what he would like.

"Just a good coach who is going to come in and know the great tradition of Miami," Ojomo said. "Experience is the best teacher."

"It doesn't matter to me as long as its a coach who gets the job done," freshman tackle Seantrel Henderson said. "I love being a Cane, the family feeling as far as the team."

> Henderson walked out of Thursday's meeting with a black boot on his left foot. He's had it for over week. The 6-8, 350-pound right tackle has a sprained achilles, but said he won't miss UM's bowl game.

Teddy Bridgewater > Miami Northwestern High quarterback Teddy Bridgewater -- one of six remaining Hurricanes commitments -- hasn't wanted to talk about recruiting lately. But I spoke to his mother, Rose Murphy by phone Thursday, who told me Bridgewater is still continuing to mull over what do since Shannon's firing.

"It's been crazy," Murphy said. "But we're taking it one day at a time. And like he says, when the time comes he'll let everybody know.

"Everytime I think it's one school or when I think he's made a decision on UM, LSU or whatever, I really don't know. When I talked to him today he said, 'Mama, I haven't decided.' So, I really don't know. I try to stay out of it and tell him whatever decision he makes I support him. I know where I would want him. But he has to make his own decision. I just want what's best for him. If he goes away, I'm fine with it. But if he stays home and plays in Miami I'm fine with it. I just want him to do what he wants to do -- and get a free education."

Murphy said UM and LSU remain at the top of her son's list, but Florida and other schools remain in hot pursuit. "It's been a lot for him to deal with," Murphy said. "They come to the house, talk to him, call him. I can't really say Manny what he's feeling."

The Hurricanes lost one commitment since Shannon's firing -- four-star cornerback Albert Louis-Jean of Brockton, Mass. UM already canceled its first recruiting weekend Dec. 10-11 and is hoping to have a coach in place so it can host recruits Dec. 17-18. When Larry Coker was fired, it took UM a little more than two weeks to find a replacement.

> In case you missed, CBS Sports Columnist Gregg Doyel took some serious shots at Canes athletic director Kirby Hocutt. He thinks Hocutt is already fumbling the coaching search process. I don't think Hocutt has and I think UM will still end up with a very good head coach.

Chris Petersen.

Now there's a record.

He's Affordable. He's only making 1.6 mil, hell thats RS range.

Is it realistic to think he would come here?

Can he bring his stuff and be successful here? Hawkins couldn't. And Hawkins had a great record at BS, as well.

Also, like it or not, we need to keep our offensive and defensive schemes close to what we have now. Too big a change in either or both and we are just an expansion team, again.

Just asking questions. Don't get mad.

there's huge risk no matter who we pick...to me, Chris Petersen is the guy and I think he'd adjust some of his scheme to Miami's superior talent. I look at him as another Dennis Ericksen only his Boise teams playe way better D (and much better D than the Dan Hawkins' Boise teams which won shoot-outs). BTW, Petersen this year has nearly the exact same rushing yards as the Canes but has a 1,000 yard rusher, a better ypc (5.4 to 4.9) and 29 rushing TDs to Miami's 19. Again, there's risk with every coach we look at but Petersen is NOT Dan Hawkins. Hire him and paint the field orange.

Just an FYI!

Me and the family went to Alabama Jacks in the keys for dinner, while eating I happened to see Leach sitting in a booth off the water. About an 15 minutes later I see Hocutt and Jimmy Johnson walk in. Not sure what it means?

Saw this on another site, wouldn't that be something? Maybe it's Jimmy instead of Leach :)

Posted by: ChicaCane | December 03, 2010 at 09:04 AM

Wow!!! I thought this was a bunch of crap, but we were just out at Elliot Key and we saw Jimmy, Hocutt, and Leach all dressed up like Pirates. They were wearing Green and Orange and smoking Cigars on Jimmy's yacht.
Close source say's the announcement will be tomorrow at halftime of the ACC Championship game.

Auburn OC gus malzahn or mike leach or Mark mangino bobby petrino dan mullens & my dark horse candidate Mike Bellotti all great offensive minds & will bring excitement back to this um offence & all would make good head coaches @ the U - recruits like exciting offenses thats what capture there attention do not make the mistake & hire a defensive guy the turn around is to long & it hurts recruiting just pay the money for a good defensive coordinator like Search Results
John Chavis or Jon Tenuta

CanezVA,

Your right. Risk with anyone we bring in.
Yea, the more I think about it Whipple 's Offense
had a high learning curve. And actually his first yr seemed better than this yr.

Hey, he would sell tickets that's for sure!

Please please please hire Carlos Huerta for special teams and Roscoe P Coletrane for defense.

I will say this . . . we know we have the money.

"Money is no object" according to Hocutt. So, I fully expect the best guy available.

Remember:

Whoever it is, has to WANT to come here.

Hey, that was Jimmie, Hocutt and Leach that just went by. Heading north to the U!

Gregg Doyel is a gator grad. I would believe anything he writes or say's, period.

Hypocrite.

Thats *wouldn't.

The universtity of Miami would be absolutely FOOLS not to hire Mike Leach!! This man is their best option. I live in Texas and what he has done with the Texas Tech program is amazing. Listen this man is a coach and he would bring an identity back to Miami and thats what they need. Leach is the checkup from the neck the team needs. If they look passed him and get mullen or anybody else it will be another, maybe not disaster, but bad hire. Leach is your man I'm telling you SoFla.

Are U sure? Are U a Cane, Well of coarse U are not. U didn't even know about Lubick without taking forever to research it. What Canes fact do you know whiz kid? U have the nerve to compare Tuberville with Saban and U know facts? BLah ha ha. U are a joke just like the last 2 that were hired here and tuberville. The difference incompetent one is that Saban built 2 national title teams and Tuberville has just treaded water when he was there. No one said anything about how he looked or acted, the fact is he is not a good coach for us and only a moron would compare Saban with Tuberville.

Bring the Air Raid Offense to the U!

I dunno' how effective Leach could be for the U with that air raid offense you talk about, but you better be prepared to say buh-bye to every single top running backs in the nation if they bring him up here.

Rb's are a dime a dozen and just a decent rb would excel in this sytem. Go back and check some stats from TT when Leach was coach. They ran the ball effectively and used the backs in the passing game. Listen people this sytem has worked everywhere its been from Kentucky, remember Tim Couch? #1 draft pick in the NFL draft to TT. I mean damn Leach made Hal Mummey or however u spell his name into a decent coach with his system.

Yeah I know Couch was a bust blah, blah, blah. Who cares how he did in the NFL. We just need them to play well while they are in college. Or would u guys like to continue to see our guys get no coachjing here and then go to the NFL and excel. Yeah thats doing Miami a lot of good lately huh?

I just heard Mike Leach interviewed on WQAM and let me say, the guy sold me.

I've been against him from day 1, but he sounds like a very smart guy.

He explained his situation pretty well and said the motivation behind the lawsuit is get his good name back. He's also owed some money from TT.

Craig James and his son are little b*tches.

this is my boy...

down to Ur 7th. choice yet ? peeeeeeeee U

btw, it's "My family and I" U typical U grad dope.

Hey Sean, Did you happen to pizz your bed when your crush/facebook hero Justin Bieber finally answer you back on 1 of your stalker posts?

Mike Shula

Anybody hear Leach on 560 (Sid) today?? I am telling you guys......this is our guy....and he is ours for the taking. If there is anyway to get this thru to the players, admin, anybody....Mike Leach is the guy.....Manny do whatever you can to get them to interview Leach!!!!! Susan, Cote, Pope, anyone, Leach is the man.....hire him....please!!!!!

CBSSports.com national columnist Gregg Doyel’s column on Kirby Hocutt is stunning in its inaccuracies, absurd assumptions and outright lies.

It is beyond my imagination how someone like this could possibly be posting articles on a blog apparently owned and operated by CBS. I won’t even get into the fact he writes like a second grader who will be held back because he’s intellectually challenged…no offense meant to second graders who are intellectually challenged.

What frustrates me more than a ridiculous article by a talentless hack with an agenda is the University of Miami has sat back silently for 20 years and allowed these types of attacks to go unchallenged. As we all know, silence is a form of acceptance.

Several years ago Dan Le Batard invited one of these hacks on his radio show after he did a hatchet job on the Canes. Within minutes of the interview beginning Le Batard had this weasel whimpering and admitting that almost everything he claimed (all negative) was based on heresy, rumors and assumptions. Then, the hack started complaining that the interview was an ambush! Can you imagine, this guy claimed he was being ambushed simply because Le Batard asked him to site his sources and verify his facts.

It is way past time that the University of Miami puts together a team to immediately pounce on these hate mongers and prove, when justified, that the author is a fraud as is his or her claims…and they should start with CBS’s Gregg Doyel.

Leach is not coming to Miami
He has yapped about being a great HC at every school that has had an opening
Just because he opens his fat cakehole and says he could do this and that for Miami doesnt mean squat
You fools that want him can go cheer for whatever team is foolish enough to hire that self pimping jackhole

hiring mike leach is just imprudent.

if you want that to happen, it just means youre an idiot as a fan because you cant process thoughts any more complex than: "his qb throws for alot of yards!" or "i saw them beat texas once!" and "i hate prima donna players like craig james!".

you imbeciles fail to take into account the other factors that go into a stupid hire like that and only want it because it looks flashy.

lets think logically here people. stop advocating for leach unless you want to make the same mistake randy did by attempting to change the identity of The U.

Ok so why don't u fill us imbeciles in on the factors that go into a stupid hire like that smart guy? With a stupid name like u have I guess u think you are all that and the end all be all when it comes to football knowledge.

Copying someones posts just to have to answer it is pretty damn stupid you moron
Try attending your 1st football game before you ask someone for a football opinion you idiot
Dont you think youve had enough Zimas for the night trailorboy?

A quiet news day so far, with the exception of Kirby, Jimmie and Leach driving toward the U!

Whew, Mike Leach sure brings up some strong opinions on both sides of the issue.

Mike Shula is an interesting mention. Wonder if there is any shot at such a legendary name in Miami football circles? Solid guy, with some Northeast Ohio football genetics. Could be strong for the Canes. Classy guy with presence, no?

Beyond that, lots of names tossed about.Lots of great thoughts (and rancor, baby!) on this comment board. However, it does not seem that anyone has inside information as to which way the search is leaning.

As an alum (ah..the glory days), I hope UM finds the right coach, because Saturdays have been too tough at times these last many years!

How about a team that plays hard and regularly competes for the ACC championship, places in the top 10 and has a legitimate shot at winning the BCS?

Greetings from the Northwest. GO CANES!

Whats up Illuminati? Its me Gatorhater/GaCane. Is Mike Leach the answer to our prayers as U fans?

I will give my opinion on Mike Leach. I do not think he will be the answer at Miami. He has that backyard offense but he will not build anything that can last here. Miami will be further from the top if Leach was to come here after 3 years then we are right now

In 2008 Texas Tech Running Backs rushed for over 1500 yrds, 28 TD's and the 2 staple backs combined for over 100 catches and caught another 9 TD's. In comparison, the last 5 years we've rushed for 17-21-17-13-13 TD's during those seasons.

There would be more overall touches in the Air Raid Offense for Runningbacks than in Miami's 3-4 deep pro-set. When T.T. would get a 30-40 point lead, in the 4th. qrt. they would run 2-tight I formation and play smashmouth.

Those are the facts.

Get some ACC n BCS Rings and Runningbacks would be happy.

Seriously, study up on this offense and it's overall stats. It will surprise U ... Just need a typical U Defense to go along with it. Or just watch Oklahoma the last 10 years. It's primarily what they do.

oh yeah ... they also threw for over 5000 yrds. and 43 TD's in 2008 averaging 45 pts. a game.

Be nice huh ?

He wont recruit for defense
He will recruit to get his little WRs for his offense and by that time it will be 45-42 games all the time
Go pimp for Leach as a HC at another school
You are either his agent or a family member, either way take that resume you have built up for him and send it somewhere else

Facts hurt huh ?

Fine, bring in Mullen so he can slam smurfs into a stacked line time after time with a few jump passes mixed in.

Lemme guess U want Harbaugh, Paterson, Peterson, Gruden, Shula, Belichick or Shannon again ... Zero Percent

Indiana Needs A Coach, so do we and they aren't lining up pal. If Edsall says no, then get ready for choice # 8 down the list then.

Or we can just keep Stoutland after a huge Dec. Bowl win.

I have been pointing this out all year. Being a fan works two ways. First, you declare your love for the team. Second, you show it. Canes fans are really good at the first one, and suck at the second one. And ultimately, this will be a factor in the guy who is willing to risk his professional reputation to coach your team.

Plenty of "fans" allegedly support the U. It makes us all look cool to say we "support" the U product since so many play in the NFL. Attendance at the game 40,110. Some of the so called bloggers didn't even bother to attend the game. At the time, the team was 7-3 and while an ACC title was unlikely at that point, they didn't even give the team a chance by showing up against the team's biggest enemy. Against SoFla, it was worse, 26,000 fans.

Now, if i am the greatest coach of all time, your choice to succeed Randy, why would I pick a school where the fans don't attend important games, especially when my job may be on the line? Why would I chance that, when I need you most to get to the next season, to accomplish something special, that you won't be there? You did it to Shannon, why should I take a chance on fans like you? That is what you did to Randy, you dissed him and the team by not showing your true colors. You may all say you are orange on the right and green on the left, but you are all nothing but bandwagoners through and through. You suck as a fan base and you will get what you deserve.

The game I was referring to was VT, where a whopping 40,000 showed up when we had an outside chance to win the ACC, and all of you 26,000 fans who love our players when they commit to us on recruiting day bothered to at least, say thank you for the effort, on Senior Day. It is despicable. No one wants to put their career on the line for fans like you.

Oh its my right to criticize SJM, they didn't win it all. I have a right to question the play calls on offense and defense as a fan? Look, I am a blogger from North Georgia, I know it all, or Tampa, or Orlando, so I know what is best for the team. You don't know chit. But you occasionally type well. But when you are a REAL fan, when you aren't trying to impress anyone, or align yourself with like minded sites, you might remember the magic of just sitting in the OB, rooting for your team win or loss, and thinking, even when the other team was more likely to win than not, that life was good. The magic was not in winning it was in believing, sometimes against all odds, that my being in the stands matters. And for those who sat out in some type of "protest" movement to fire the coach for VT and USF, you got the loss you deserve, but your actions will never warrant a real coach trusting you enough to want to be here.

Now youre going to blame the fans for what happened with RS? Now let me guess, youre going to tell everyone here that you go to every game and you are the greatest Miami fan of all time. Do us all a favor and save that speech for some of those wanna be fans that you hang around with. Dont come walking in here acting like you know why someone does or doesnt want to coach here. Unless you are there doing the interviews and know what they are saying then fine otherwise shut the hell up. Youre just another one of those so called fans that will follow whatever the "sources" in the media will tell you.

Every college coach wants to succeed. Their incomes depend on it. They know that they can X and O every game. Half the time it works and half the time it doesn't. But if real fans attend games, make some noise, sometimes it is tough for other teams to execute the X and O's. If you don't show up for important games, it is simply X's and O's. Then you add things like official biases against teams, bad luck, and suddenly evenly matched teams produce the upset.

The one thing I want to remind everyone is that we were the most talented team week in and week out. But how many times were we blatantly cheated by the ACC refs? 7 games? Maybe not that many but close. Kirby could have taken a stand and said, hey, our black coach is being cheated. Films don't lie. We will go to another conference. But instead, Kirby dissed Randy and never made it an issue, thereby allowing what was pretty blatant cheating to continue, regardless of the subsequent coach he may hire.

I have never seen an AD conduct a new coach search in this manner. Hocutt has made this a publicity stunt, but when you are a guy with a job, you don't appreciate his actions. Hocutt should be fired for his incompetence.

Wow SJMPARMAN.......need some vagisil?

They all claim to know

Did you go to either game VT or SFla?

Get the hell out of here with that b.s, SJMPARMAN
Thats a weak excuse filled post
I think you have had enough sherm for the night. There is no way in hell you can be serious with any of those posts
Nobody knows who and how Kirby is conducting interviews right now
After reading your last few posts im not sure you even know what an interview is
Go back to your little lawyer crying girls blog and get hi-5s for those garbage posts there
That dont cut it over here

No you didn't. You read some blog that said you could get what you want if you didn't support the team. Of course, you cricize the team when they come out flat? Fool. You show up win or lose as a true fan. Anything else is half assed.

Every home game and OSU,Pitt and Clemson on the road

Why don't you scan those tickets for us to see?

Run Spot Run? Wanna show us your ticket when the season was on the line?

Go back to that lawyer girls blog so she can talk about herself all the time and tell you how great she is. You fit right in there with that place
After 2 days I realized that was the worst site ever made to chat about the Miami Huricanes.
Theres only 2 places that are worth a damn when it comes to Miami football blogging and you coming here is about to ruin this one
Please dont return to the other site and ruin it again
Stay over with the other hanger-ons that think lawyer girl runs a good site. It sux

I am still waiting for you to post your ticket to either of the last two games to show the incoming coach he can trust you to be there when his income may be in jeopardy.

I didn't want this to be about other Canes sites. So I will do the manly thing and not criticize any of them. Next?

Would you like for me to scan you my SS# and credit card #s while im at it as well
Oh yeah ill make sure to scan my bank account info as well
You really are the dumbest s.o.b. I have ever come across on a Miami site
Go back where you belong stalkerboy

I am not into name calling because I am so much smarter than you. Anyone who follows the link will know that by now. Most won't read it to the bottom out of pity for you. You might wanna try sanity, most of us feel good about it.

You wouldnt have the 1st clue about how to help out the U
All you go by is what that eye of the lawyer site tells you to do
Try thinking for yourself just once
