Golden brings over three Temple assistants

UM officially announced the hiring of former Temple defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach Paul Williams Thursday afternoon. The trio will be allowed to recruit this week thanks to an NCAA waiver.

The three new coaches will not be allowed to partake in coaching activities until after UM's bowl game on Dec. 31.

Mark D'Onofrio D'Onofrio, 41, Franklin, 45, and Williams, 39, led an Owls defense that was the best in the MAC and ranked 17th nationally in total defense during the 2010 campaign. The defense also ranked 14th nationally in pass defense, 15th in pass efficiency defense and 16th in scoring defense.

Williams brings 15 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Hurricane staff and has been with Golden and D'Onofrio since the inception at Temple. Under his guidance, Temple defensive backs earned All-MAC honors on four occasions, including two-time honoree and 2010 senior Jaiquawn Jarrett.

Franklin, a 19-year coaching veteran, joins UM after successful stints with three teams in the NFL (Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers) as well as stops at USC and Temple over the last decade. While at USC in 2005, defensive ends Lawrence Jackson and Frostee Rucker were All-Pac-10 first teamers, while Rucker (third round) and LaJuan Ramsay (sixth round) were NFL draft picks.

"We are very fortunate to announce the addition of these three coaches," Golden said in a statement released by the school. "Their passion and desire for excellence matches that of the Miami fan base, alumni and stakeholders. I felt it was important that they be able to hit the ground running and start recruiting immediately. The NCAA waiver gave us that opportunity and should be tremendous benefit.

Jethro Franklin "On a personal note, they are great friends and coaches that I respect tremendously. They know the type of program we want to run - on and off the field - and could not be more excited about joining the proud tradition at The U."

Current Miami assistant coaches Rick Petri (defensive line), Wesley McGriff (defensive backs) and John Lovett (defensive coordinator) will remain in a coaching capacity through the 2010 Hyundai Sun Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 31, but none of the three will be retained after the bowl game.

According to the statement released by UM, Golden has not made any other formal decisions on his 2011 coaching staff at this point.

Golden also announced the hiring of Tom Deahn to the role of Director of Football Operations and Ryan McNamee to the role of Director of Player Development. Deahn and McNamee both filled the same role with Golden at Temple.

Corey Bell and Cindy Abraham-Garcia both departed from the UM staff after serving in the operational capacities the last four years.

Oh and how 'bout them MAC Conference Assitants on their way down to save Duh U !!!

woo hoo ?

Golden is on WQAM now ... Actually he's pretty damn good. Must be that Penn State Education.

Enjoy him for the 2 years U have him.

THIS is how you reshape a program! Because Coach Shannon had always been an Asst. Coach he didn't have these "ready made" moves in his bag...not his fault, but exactly WHY you want an established, networked Head Coach. This energy level is something we haven't seen in a long time. I realize he just got here. but you've got to be excited about the pace of things....just imagine what this "shared experience" coaching staff might accomplish with all our tallented athletes.

hopefully they keep barrow he has done a decent job with what he has. Undersized lb's hopefully next year Cain will step in the roll as the middle lb the canes have been missing. Got to also take a good look at the off line coach. Plus I think Barrow had his hands tied since shannon seemed like he never wanted to blitz. Or wait they did especially in the vt game and in the 2nd half called off the dogs. must have been shannon saying not to get too emotional and keep the foot on the throat.

I have been watching the canes for over 25 years, and though are defense was decent this year we have to make improvements in our front 7. The long runs we gave up were totally unacceptable and thus the need to shake up the defensive coaching staff.

does anyone know Goldens offensive philosophy? Did he run a pro style attack or spread at Temple? I know they had a pretty good rb, so i assume he will utilize our abundance of runningbacks that we have returning. I have a feeling Whipple will be coming back based on him being highly revered in the northeast and thats where the hc is from. just hopes he allows the best players to play no matter where they were at on RS depth chart.

cant really blame whipple. he was trying to run a pro style offense but shannon had his spread type of guys. Whipple didnt throw the balls to the wrong team constintly. I think he figured it out. run the ball and have a chance to win. I think I lost so many finger nails watching harris throw the ball. Give morris a chance at a full year with the ol coming back and the great running backs. Get the te more involved. Which means the wr need to step up and catch a damn ball.

How is he doing as far as keeping the recruit commitments? What is happening in that regard? The coaches cant play on the field unless they are going to form a line and put their knee out to trip someone ala the Jets....

OhioCane, Golden runs a prostyle offense. The guy that really needs to be canned is that idiot Panuzzio or what ever his name is that pretends to be a special teams coordinator. And Hill may be a good recruiter but he sucks as a recievers coach. Golden would be well served to contemplate talking to Mark Duper about being our recievers coach. He did wonders for Hank and other than Hank the rest of the guys played below their abilities. Garry stevens should be given a call to see if he would come back and be offensive coordinator. Our qb play has sucked since he left.

Dozier81, Man I agree a 100% with U. The only thing I did not like about Whipple was his play selection and timing. We would be controling the game with our running game and then instead of play action off of it he would just go 4 wide and shotgun. Then of coarse harris would throw a pick. I still say whether or not Bridgewater comes or not we should go after another QB in case he doesn't pan out as a QB.

Has anyone heard any recent news on Latwan Anderson. There was talks that he left or was leaving the team, but haven't heard anything since.

Love the moves by coach Golden. Next to go is the strenght and condition coach. That need to be upgraded. We need to get more physical on both lines of scrimmage.

Duval, I could not agree with U more. Swassey is not getting the job done.

Good analysis of the D by Troy.

When Franklin was D line coach at USC, it was lights out for opponents. They also had some strong backers.

Coach Golden is bringing in long-term assistants that will be on the same page.

Now, the big question is who will the O picks be? With our talent, have you ever seen so many dropped passes, goofy play calling and general inconsistency? Bad coaching, folks. The answer is to start again and bring in new coaches.

I hope Coach Barrow stays, however. But, we need linebackers with ferocity, size and speed if our front 7 is to consistently shut down opponents. We have a lot of talented D linemen, and Sean Spence can be a definite force in the right position.

Although it is tough for kids when a change occurs, the revamped O needs to be a major focus. We need a new start with discipline and mental commitment to go with the on-board skills, particularly at the receiver and TE positions. What other D 1 program has such talented athletes who drop the ball so much?

Hopefully, Coach Golden will have something in mind that represents a new start without turning everything upside down.

How about Coach Stoutland as an O line guy?

This is a really exciting time to be a Cane. And it is only going to get better, folks!

GO CANES! BEAT NOTRE DAME!

to continue to let some of y'all post is proof that manny, susan and the herald don't like UM
football or UM in general...please add some real professionl iournalists to this segment of your paper...it's like a jr. high rag now...

U got played ... again

nice shades mike

fukkin a for JB n Alonzo

Whipple is gone. I'm looking at David Shaw the OC at Stanford. He's got a pro style offense at the Farm. Our defense was good at times but DL and LB play was terrible......

I wonder if Golden will try to get Latwan back on the team. Would be nice.

bring back soldinger - at least for an interview - maybe even kehoe too.

I'm still skeptical about this hire and the addition of the three coaches. I do like that they're young, but they coached in the MAC. The conference is garbage. No team from that conference had been in the top 25 in years if not ever.

Look at the bitter piece of garbage posting at 2:27 in the morning. Seems like he is more of a loser than anyone thought. Or maybe, the night shift at Circle K isn't too busy.

Pig, you are not the legend or wit you think you are.

D-bag exroidinaire ....its time I told u who ur daddy is boy! That's right I STILL own u.

Question:
Why can there only be 15 Scholarship giving out by the U?
Is that also true for every school?

I hope Al Golden doesn't mind being a minority in the down there in that ghetto slum called Miami

Who cares what you think?

Scrap the whole SCum team and start anew.

Wow, did this guy just say that Gary Stevens should come back as offensive coordinator? Unbelievable. Now, THIS is the reason why I continue to read these posts. Just when you think the stupidity has reached its limit, another genius comes out and says something like this.

Anyone who says that Stoutland should return should find some way to make their head to stop thinking for good. It doesn't matter how good of a recruiter he is. All that matters is how poor the offensive line has performed since he has been here.

What hurt Shannon as a coach was his staff and lack of experience to know when to let a guy go and when to let them stay. Clint Hurt was a great recruiter, but terrible line coach compared to Petri. The only reason we hired Petri is due to Hurt taking the same position. Look at how much the defense improved when Petri joined the U. The only thing that I can knock about Petri is his run defense was weak, but a lot of it has to do with Middle Linebacker. I don't know how many times McCarthy hit the wrong wholes. This year if you really had to run the ball because of how much Miami improved in the pass defense then it was simple. All a team had to do is run it up the middle or seal off the defensive ends but still run it between the tackle and guard because we had no answer for the run. If you kick it to the outside with a run then you play to our scheme (speed). On defense, we became more of a finesse team than a powerful team with speed. The front 7 was terrible as a unit.

He waited 2 years before he fired Nix, and Whipple's offense could have been better if the line could hold up but since we lost Berlin the offensive line play has been terrible. Shannon should have let Stoutland go after the FSU game that got kirby Freeman destroyed while throwing the game winning touchdown.

I hope Al Golden doesn't mind being a minority in the down there in that ghetto slum called Miami

I hope you dont mind translating "in the down there..."

Scrap the whole SCum team and start anew.

*******************************************************

EXACTLY!!!!, Fire Foley, Muschamp, Urban (who is just taking up office space now) but keep addazio, stuff him and place him in the gaturd hall of fame!

"in the down there" meaning there are so many trailerpark trash Gatard fans living in South Florida that an intelligent, well-spoken person with all of his teeth is a minority. Get rid of all the Gatard trash and he would be in the majority.

R,do u even know who Garry Stevens is? Just to refresh your ignorant brain, he was the offensive coordinator under Jimmy johnson who made QB,s like Walsh, Testaverde, and others look like 1st round draft picks. People who are Canes would know that. Just how is the thought of reaching out to him unbelieveable? Sure he has a new life for himself, but in the best interest of our team I do not see what it would hurt to just inquire about him. He makes alot more sense than some of these nuts that think Ken Dorsey should be brought in as Quarterbacks coach when he has no coaching experience.

The defense against the run is pretty misleading. Those rushing yards we gave up are inflated because all the runs we gave up over 50 yards. Clemson had one for over 7O, Va. Tech had one for over 80, Fla. St. had one for over 90, and UNC had one for over 70. I also believe the FSU game they had another run for over 40. The defensive line just doesn't have enough studs up front, especially at DT. The Question here are we going to get anyone this recruting class to help and the answer looks to be no.
We need to get bigger and taller up front. We have to many guys 6'2 or less up front. Our lb's have to get bigger. Enough of these 6'0 220lb LB'S. The DB's are only going to be as good as the guys up front.

The talent level is high the U however the execution has been REALLY poor. If Golden is a detail oriented coach that lights a fire under his players we have a real chance to make a dramatic improvement next year. And i dare say similar to when Urban took over Zookers goldmine of players. Our greatest overall weaknesses this past season were our QB play and our linebacking core. The linebackers basically SUCKED and the QBs thought they were throwing to the other team. On offense our QB's turned the ball over way too often. On D our linebackers couldnt plug their holes and they were null and void in pass D. Another note im still not sure how our WRs sucked soo bad...Even Hank droppped way too many passes

Dude, your name is an oxymoron. U r gator, so u r already presumed dumb.
Looser.........

cansfan101 - So Randy would've dumped more assistant coaches and hired more, creating more turnover with those guys but the same inept guy in charge at the top?

Nix to Whipple to ? ... Walton to Young to Lovett to ?

There shouldn't be that much turnover with assistants, further proving that Shannon really never figured out how to build a quality staff and to get his guys ready to run through a wall for him. Another strike against the man, sadly.

herbieibis:

You know nothing about football.

A 6 ft 220 lb in college is not under sized. Maybe in the NFL but not in college. I give you, London Fletcher. 5 ft 10, 230 lbs. Top 5 in tackles in the NFL. Many LBs are 6, 6-1. It's how good they are. Colin McCarthy is 6-2 240. So what is your point? he couldn't tackle worth a dd-- and was frequently out of position!
Sure he had some excellent plays, but for every 3 good tackles he made for a loss, he missed 6 others and gave up TDs. case inpoint, rayan Williams' run for a TD against Va Tech. Look at the replay, he ran the wrong way!

Were simply the best recruiting class around, end of story!!!! U losers have 2 recruits remaining.

"Star system All-Americans" for the Gatards go 7-5. I don't think you are getting value for your dollar, Gatard trash. Of course, when you pull money from academics to pay for everything athletic, you can't count too goods, can yuhs, Gatard trash?

I hope the new coach doesn't make the mistake of retaining Wipple. His play calling was horrable.

do all gator folks sit around and envy Miami all day...the fact we are a better school, better area, better students, better academics, better at everything...please just move on and let Miami be a dream of yours....Gainesville is a cloudy nasty place that people go when they cannot get into the miami's of the world....

As for the assistants..bring on the new ones...I would clean house..we have under achieved for years...petri could have worked out but let em all go..Golden knows what he is doing...

Joe Z is a great hurricane backer and a great man (see hurrice andrew) but the weekly coach show would be improved with anybody else but keep Don Bailey;

I hope we keep Barrow, Stoutland because They are Key to Recruiting South Florida.

Posted by: robert

i agree, and i wish we would of kept Petri also.
and about whipple,.. i dont think he did a bad job with the plays he called, i just think they focused to much on the passing game which made them predictable. we have some really talented RB's, would of liked to of seen them get more responsibility earlier on in the year, allowing the passing game to open up more. bravo to Hankerson thought, nice to see him perform well.

Nigieancane you were busted on so bad yesterday I cant believe you had the nerve to come crawling out of that basement and put up a post. Of course it was a useless post as always but we were still stunned to see you showed up after the beating you took from the bloggers that really know football and dont have to lie about it like you

I hope he does keep Stoutland. He is a good guy. Watch any of the pressers. He knows what he's talking about and did a good job with the line. Not too thrilled about the WR coach though.

I hope that stick figure qb gains some weight and fast. Oh yeah, yous haves no depths.

Good thing u guys are still playing in that rat motel known as the OB, oh yeah its been destroyed in that third world porta john cess pool known as Miami.
