Golden brings over three Temple assistants

UM officially announced the hiring of former Temple defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach Paul Williams Thursday afternoon. The trio will be allowed to recruit this week thanks to an NCAA waiver.

The three new coaches will not be allowed to partake in coaching activities until after UM's bowl game on Dec. 31.

Mark D'Onofrio D'Onofrio, 41, Franklin, 45, and Williams, 39, led an Owls defense that was the best in the MAC and ranked 17th nationally in total defense during the 2010 campaign. The defense also ranked 14th nationally in pass defense, 15th in pass efficiency defense and 16th in scoring defense.

Williams brings 15 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Hurricane staff and has been with Golden and D'Onofrio since the inception at Temple. Under his guidance, Temple defensive backs earned All-MAC honors on four occasions, including two-time honoree and 2010 senior Jaiquawn Jarrett.

Franklin, a 19-year coaching veteran, joins UM after successful stints with three teams in the NFL (Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers) as well as stops at USC and Temple over the last decade. While at USC in 2005, defensive ends Lawrence Jackson and Frostee Rucker were All-Pac-10 first teamers, while Rucker (third round) and LaJuan Ramsay (sixth round) were NFL draft picks.

"We are very fortunate to announce the addition of these three coaches," Golden said in a statement released by the school. "Their passion and desire for excellence matches that of the Miami fan base, alumni and stakeholders. I felt it was important that they be able to hit the ground running and start recruiting immediately. The NCAA waiver gave us that opportunity and should be tremendous benefit.

Jethro Franklin "On a personal note, they are great friends and coaches that I respect tremendously. They know the type of program we want to run - on and off the field - and could not be more excited about joining the proud tradition at The U."

Current Miami assistant coaches Rick Petri (defensive line), Wesley McGriff (defensive backs) and John Lovett (defensive coordinator) will remain in a coaching capacity through the 2010 Hyundai Sun Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 31, but none of the three will be retained after the bowl game.

According to the statement released by UM, Golden has not made any other formal decisions on his 2011 coaching staff at this point.

Golden also announced the hiring of Tom Deahn to the role of Director of Football Operations and Ryan McNamee to the role of Director of Player Development. Deahn and McNamee both filled the same role with Golden at Temple.

Corey Bell and Cindy Abraham-Garcia both departed from the UM staff after serving in the operational capacities the last four years.

Wow thats some funny stuff right there 2 star U. I hope you dont mind that im going to pass on your IP address to Carrot Top. He has been looking for an opening act and youre just the kind of comedian with fresh material he is looking for. Keep it coming chuckles

good stuff gaturd trolls. 2 star U. hahaha, how original. We all see how your star studded classes did at UF.

UF = Ultimate Failure

next year will answer how bad randy was when golden looses 2 games. we have enough talent. now, if golden looses 4 games,, then what?

2 star, your idiot post leads to two conclusions: either you are lying, or you choose to live in a place that is as bad as you describe and you are therefore a miserable impotent loser.

I think it is a bit of both. Now, about that trailerpark that the Gatard trash call a campus.......

canefane1, could you please put your tooth back in and not refer to your trailerpark dictionary when sending a post in here. Acting like a Cane fan when youre nothing more then a cow tipping hillbilly is pretty pathetic

DONOFRIO was one heck of a LB back in the day. he is young and fiery. AND AN EX NFL PLAYER WITH BARROW. U get 2 NFL caliber guys like that out recruiting and how can U not want to play for them. They know what it takes to make it. GRAEAT HIREEEEEEEEEEE

His arms are folded. If this was a pix of Randy, the vultures would be in full force.

Ya know why he got fired? A back up center and QB from USF walked down the field and scored on our so called Mastermind Petri. Never ran any stunts or twist or delays. Lets give somebody with sum NFL experience a shot. GO CANES!

Anybody can confirm this?

"ghetto slum"..? do you know anything about coral gables.. Wjere the school actually is? Look up the biltmore and educate yourself. Man people are pathetically stupid

My only comment to you people about the defense. Guys with over 4 minutes left on the clock against Virginia, The defense couldn't get Virginia off the field to give the kid a chance to try and pull game out. Please Virginia wasn't Auburn and Cam Newton. Virginia the same team that lost the next game to Duke. The three defensive coaches had to go, and maybe Barrow too.

Golden is starting to remind me of Jimmy Johnson.. young, aggressive, wants to meet players and talk. I think we are seeing now what Randy was lacking. Randy is, was and always will be a good guy but obviously when you are losing the top players to other schools in recruiting and some players are not even considering you it becomes a concern. Now we are hearing from recruits and current and former players that Randy did not have a strong relationship with the players or their families.

Let's look at reality for a second

Al Golden is a perfect fit for da U--a white guy from the Northeast that is just looking for a vacation in South Florida. Just like the majority of UM's student body--out of state white Northerners. A perfect fit!

Whipple wasnt the problem. The problem was the quarterback situation. Shannon stayed with Jacory too long. I think Morris has better tools and will improve now that he started a few games. Once he is named the starter, the NOrthwestern "click" will change their tune and it'll be man for man, and not a group situation. Shannon felt committed to playing all those kids, when not all of them were good players....

This is a really exciting time to be a Cane. And it is only going to get better, folks!

GO CANES! BEAT NOTRE DAME!

...and the beat goes on

Unbelievable huh Soldy. My god U have lambasted these idiots this week. Outstanding as always.

Fall will roll around and these dUmb clUcks will YET AGAIN fire ip their mindless rhetoric.

Six months ago, If ANYONE would have suggested bringing in the entire TEMPLE coaching staff, they would have been roundly laughed at.

i was a big fan of Whipple's coming into this past season... i wonder how much of the offensive woes were his fault and how much of it was Shannon's fault! i believe his offense was still the #1 offense in total yards in the ACC this past season, no? i think Golden would be hard pressed to get rid of a guy like that... IMO Whipple has the right intensity and know how to belong... Golden should better control the rights and wrongs and mistakes of the O...

Who won Ms. Trailertrash 2010? Does she wear a UFelony crown?

Bridgewater is not the same type of Quarterback that JH is, quite frankly I think his skill are much better for college than HS. His built is not fragile like JH which is why some scouts say he can play DB or WR. He will has a lot of swag and will very likely lead Miami to NC if we can get him.

Did this cluck just throw up a "swag?"   Isn't TB the guy that just DECOMMITTED???? YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION DUMB CANE CLUCK !

THIS is how you reshape a program! ...exactly WHY you want an established, networked Head
Coach.Posted by: CarolCityCane | December 16, 2010 at 08:33 PM

Reshape a program?? With a bunch of untested guys from the MAC?  Yes, coaches and assistants nationwide are furiously working to join the Temple coaching network/pipeline.
.
.
Soldy, UM fans are a bottomless source of entertainment. You just KNOW they'll bust out the NC blabber come fall. Silly cane cluck.  All deez years and u still building depths. How are those four commits working out for ya cane fan?

Kirby Paycut,

You don't like my optimism apparently.
Yah, the Temple coaching staff isn't
_________ or whatever program you want
to plug in. Other successful UM coaches
did not come from high profile programs when
they started.

On the "dumb" thing, betcha I've got way
more education than you, bro. And, I am proud
to say, most of my DEGREES are from UM.

We always have a choice: you can predict
failure or you can predict success. Why not start with a positive expectation? If it flops,
you deal with it and get better predicting the next phase. So what?

Sean Wilson's mother is Ms. Trailertrash. Her prize? Fried yardbird.

An open letter to Jorge Rojas:

I recently looked at the "Gator Clause" blog on the Miami Herald, which appears to be run by a 5th year UF student. The discourse on that blog was coherent and had almost no "noise" from fans of other teams trying to start arguments. But strangely enough I kept seeing comments complaining about the "UM trolls", and eventually I came upon this message from Mike McCall, 5th year sr. and author of "Gator Clause":

"catnround, I feel you. I'm going through and deleting those comments as often as I can, but I'm not tied to this blog all day, so they're going to be up for a few hours til I can get to them.

My advice to everyone is to just ignore it. Don't respond, don't provoke it, just do your thing and I'll do the best I can at weeding it all out.

WE SHALL OVERCOME!"

Mike-Mike

So basically the point I'm trying to make is that this kid is doing his job and Manny Navarro and Susan Miller Degnan are not. You want them to be sportswriters? Then have them write stories and turn off the comments section. But don't pretend that the Miami Herald has a Hurricanes blog because you do not. Get yourselves some interns, and tell them to start weeding.

KIRBY AND DONNA WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

OUT WITH THE LATINS AND BLACKS IN WITH THE WHITES, UM ATHLETIC DPT, THE GUYS IN SUITS HAS ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM HIRING BROWN PEOPLE UP STAIRS..INSTEAD OF PETE GARCIA A UM GRAD WHO WORKED HIS SELF UP THE RANKS TO BE AD AT UM..DONNA HIRES A MID WESTERN WHITE KID FROM KANSAS..HIS FIRST DAY AY JOB HE FIRES ROGER BELL(YES FATHER OF NBA STAR RAJA BELL), MR BELL A UM GRAD WHO DID GREAT THINGS WITH ALL THE UM ATHLETES IN THE COMMUNITY.
KIRBY WHO TALKS ABOUT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT "THE U" HIRES A STAFF THE LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE HIM..SO WHO IN THE UM ATHELTIC DEPT LOOKS LIKE THE THE MIAMI SPORTS COMMUNTIY?..DONNA AND KIRBY LOOK AT YOUR MOST SUCCESFUL PROGRAMS IN THE PAST,FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL..THOSE ATHLETES ARE MOSTLY LATINS AND BLACKS..MY QUESTIONS IS WHY DONT YOUR STAFF REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY...IM NOT TALKING ABOUT COACHES..I AM TALIKING ABOUT ADM STAFF..OPEN YOUR EYES ..IT WILL BE UM DOWNFALL..

FIRE KIRBY BRING IN PETE GARCIA

More bigoted nonsense regarding the color of the AD and coaches. These, of course, are the same bigots who see themselves as victimized by whites, claiming to be exempt from any such racist attitudes. Tireseome and hypocritical.

In any business, you hire people who you believe will do the best job. The idea of representing the demographics of the community is the affirmative action dream, be it in sports, education or business. Something for very little.

What does color have to do with finding the best person for the job? It is performance that determines who stays on the job and who does not. Who didn't want to see Coach Shannon succeed?

I am sure that UM administrators, including the President (a historical liberal, by the way), are trying to find who will deliver results, just like in real life.

So criticize (if you must) based on performance, not on color. There is nothing magical about color in terms of likely success. It is ability, dedication and the right resources that will produce success, and UM has a good package coming together. If they fail, then do a better search based on the person, not skin color or demographics.

Let's move on to reality.

Does anyone have acess to canesport and knows who the surprise commit could be?

There is a color difference in college athletics when it comes to coaches and AD's..nothing to do with performance and everything to do with "good ole boys club"?..how can you perform if you can't get in the door? Pete Garcia(UM born and raised) vs Kirby Holcutt?..Mario Cristabal (UM born and raised) vs Al Golden?..these guys have better Qualification then KIRBY OR AL GOLDEN, but was never mentioned when the AD search took place or the Head Coach search began. At least Mario won his confence. Al Golden hasnt.. Please explain why there is only two Latin Head coaches and one Latin AD? and 7 African American head D1 coaches and 3 AD's?..If you don't think the "Good ole boy club" isn't live and well then you are the one out of reality.

Kirby and Donna etc.

Why are there so few Latino coaches?
Is it the "good ole boys club," as you claim?
Or aren't there that many good ones?

I would have interviewed Coach Cristobal for the UM job, because he has had success, albeit at FIU, and to the best of my knowledge, not as an asistant at larger programs. And Coach Golden has had success as well, including as an assistant at different FBS programs. Do you deny that he is a worthy candidate because of skin color?

What is true is that a coach should be judged based on performance, once they are in a job. Or judged on the basis of their previous body of work, if the issue is interviewing for a new position.

The idea that there is some vast "white" conspiracy to exclude hispanic coaches is nonsense. Maybe there haven't been that many in terms of experience and success. I do note that Tom Flores was hired as coach of the Oakland Raiders (years ago). So, where is the "good ole boys club"? How about African-Americans Charlie Strong at Louisville, or Sylvester Croom at Mississippi State (terminated because he did not produce) or Haywood at Miami of Ohio. And Randy Shannon? Where was the "good ole boys network"?

To assume that biogotry is at work in "excluding" minority coaches is to miss the fact that there are fewer numbers available now, and few have distinguished themselves as head coaches. Who else should the UM have interviewed?

And what are Pete Garcia's credentials that he should be AD, and not Hocutt?

Are you familiar with Shalala's political background as a dedicated liberal? Is she too part of the "good ole boys network"?

But race is your frame of reference in seeing the world around you. Good luck. Why not see it as a matter of people, some who are successful and some who are not? The winners will always get their shot.

Kirby and Donna Please whatever. Here's an idea, Why don't you work for something instead of thinking you are owed something by society. Shannon Failed, Croom failed, Whillingham failed twice, Ray Rhodes Failed twice, that guy coaching the Colts failed and will be canned soon. People should not get hired based on the number of minoritys they have nor should a white man not be hired because he is white. Thats whats wrong with our country. U people think somebody owes U something because U are a minority. That affimative action crap screwed our whole country up. The job should go to the best qualified person, period. No matter what their race is. Randy Shannon just like Larry Coker were not qualified for the head coaching job, just like Christobal was not qualified. Golden was the best and right choice and that's why he was hired. Thank you Kirby and great job on hiring Coach Golden. Thank you Donna and Kirby for firing Shannon and not forcing us Fans to have to endure another year of his crap and pathetic excuse for a head coach. I salute U both.
