Wow! New era at UM

Good morning, everyone.

Wow, you can already feel the difference at UM football practice.

It was wonderful being out there at practice this morning on Greentree Field. Beautiful day. Nobody seemed paranoid, and we were allowed to watch at least 30 minutes. Of course, depending on who gets the head coaching job, that could change. We shall see.

Freshman RT Seantrel Henderson not only no longer is wearing a boot on his left foot, he looks as lean and mean as a 6-8, 355-pound young man can look. That is the weight it says for Henderson on the roster. He might have lost weight since then. You should have seen Seantrel sprinting during running drills. He looked great.

A.J. Highsmith is no longer wearing orange. The former quarterback, a sophomore, now wears a white jersey and has officially been converted to a defensive back -- he said he's trying cornerback. But those things sometimes change. I'm happy for A.J. At least he gets to use this year as a redshirt year, and he'll have three more years of eligibility to develop into his new role. He has sacrificed a lot for this team, working very hard to learn the offense without ever really getting a chance to run it. I do think he's a team guy first. And he's smart, with obvious athletic talent. I hope he does well.

Players looked very spirited today, led by another spirited person: interim coach Jeff Stoutland, a great guy and really fine coach.

One super play today, which drew "oohs" and "ahhs" from spectators: Receiver Travis Benjamin leaped sky-high over Brandon Harris for a gorgeous catch in the end zone. If only he can do the same in the Sun Bowl...

Also: linebacker Jordan Futch is wearing an orange jersey now, as he has requested to play tight end. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple said he deserves to be given a chance, and will play that position in the bowl game.

Bye. Have a nice Saturday.

SUSAN

Ok, lets just say it comes out true, and Muschamp makes us look like FIU in recruiting against them in yrs to come.

What makes you think Muschamp will just automatically be as successful as Spurrier and Meyer??

For one, if i'm not mistaken, both came to UF with a HC experiece, Meyer with an impressive one already coming from Utah.

Second, Muschamp could very well be the 2nd coming of Ron Zook, who also had a lot of hype before he was named the coach to the Gators.

Also, Shannon left the U in a much better shape, than when Butch was hired to take over during the probation era, the coach coming in already has an impressive 3 recruiting cycle from Shannon, including what would be left of the 08 class.

Let's just wait who Kirby hires, and whoever the coach would be, i hope canes fans does not rush to judgement before he even set foot to campus, i will wait and see until results are in.

Al Golden, Trestman, Edsall or whoever may end up a better hire than Muschamp to UF.

A great Saturday. What a joke, I got more timely info on Gruden from the Dallas papers than here. Now Florida signs a coach in just a couple days and this blog/column is telling people to enjoy their Saturday. I hope these two only get paid part time wages because that's all they put in. Don't quit your day jobs, you'll need them. Papers from other states scoop these 2, the Herald ought to consider Shannon for this space and let these 2 go to Minnesota. Embarrassing journalism. Numerous negative comments are posted here and you can bet nothing will be mentioned next week when they are done enjoying their weekend.

Probably best not to try to run that rationale by too many people. Try as you may, but once you begin to see the looks that you'll get, I'm sure you will get the idea.

Muschamp had one of the worst defenses in the country. Match that with one of the worst offenses at Gainesville U and you have a dumpster fire in Turdville.

Zooker > Muschamp.

Leach never met Donna. Thats what he said in his interview. He is not a bad guy. We need to email Hocutt and tell him fans want Leach. Dont care what anyone thinks because I know nobody good wants this job. Not even Tuberville, who coached here. Leach does, we wants local talent and knows he cqn win with it. Best part is he smoked Wil Muschamps Defense(now gator hc). HIRE LEACH!

Finally it was nice to hear some positive emotion written about this team. This is still a game and I am hoping the players are having some fun in spite of everything. I am and always be a CANES fan no matter what their record. Thanks Susan.

Hire Al Golden. If he can win at Temple with no talent. He should do wonders at the U.

Why is it that thos column blog sounds like it was written by a UM college student. I got more timely info on Gruden from the Dallas papers than here. GAtor fans gloating that they got "an sec guy" in muschamp? LOL. Pathetic people in that pathetic place.

Let's see.HMMMM. Texas was 5-7 and he was the DC of a horrendous defense that lost to, yes, Baylor. Texas could not even be bowl eligible.
UF actually has a good defense. thanks to what Charlie Strong put together.
Where is the "upside" in Muschgamp? Ahh yes, in his interview he says he lived in Canesville for 10 years. Oh ok that automatically makes you a gator. Ok.

I do agree that UM has to move quicker on this coaching search, but I'd rather not get just anyone. If Kirby knows whats good for him, he should at leat interview Mike Leach.

Don't any of you remember the contract extension negotiations between Leach and Texas Tech ? They went very badly and Leach became persona non grata with the AD and administration. This is part of the" baggage" as referred .

jrp,
You need to hold it together. You're alone on this one. Give it up. Please, if I was at practice for at least 30 minutes, I would have come up with a hell of a lot more material than this article. But who cares! If you like reading this garbage, go ahead. I'm not telling you not to read it. Enjoy.

I thought UF was a Rolls Royce of a coaching position...that they could get anyone they wanted! Hah...They run off and hire their own Randy Shannon, and do it without so much as a wink towards anyone with head coaching experience. Foley blew this one.

Next year UF and FSU will both have career assistant coaches running their program and UM will have fired their talented career assistant and will have a head coach with experience winning with lesser talent.

The press has their heads up their ----- on this one. This coaching turnover is working out well for us.

Go Canes!

How is Muschamp highly thought of? Not that I'm thrilled with Marc Trestman but how is Muschamp the #1 choice for Florida? Last 4 years of Texas defensive rankings in the Big 12:

2010 #3 rank 23.8 ppg (excellent)
2009 #12 rank 40.7 ppg (dead last)
2008 #10 rank 43.9 ppg (terrible)
2007 #8 rank 36.0 ppg (bad)

Three out of four years his defenses were horrendous. Again, how and why is he highly thought of? Because he was an assistant for Nick Saban? Yeah, and Romeo Crennel was assistant for Bill Belichick.

Soooooo……….You’re telling me this is the guy that Kirby was talking about when he said we need a homerun hire? This is the guy that’ll fill our stadium? Ummmm…………

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have a new coach.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5912786

Looks like it si going to be Golden per report on ESPN.com.

Well alright! UM has hired a really strong, up and coming young coach that has it all. This was the best available on the market, it appears.

Judging by some of the comments, the whining continues. Get off it, Leach fans, etc.!

Canes Nation, you are going to LOVE this guy!

Welcome Al Golden! GO CANES!

Who the heck is Al Golden??? LOL What a joke.

It appears the Eye On The U is closed again. Shannon fired they were late with the story. Gruden getting spoken to and the Dallas Morning News had it before the Eye. Golden now hired and the Eye is black again. While Susan was relaxing in the sun at practice and telling us what color jerseys players were wearing and Manny was flipping burgers at McDonalds Florida hired a coach and neither of them mentioned why FL hired a coach within hours while UM still couldn't give the job away. These reporters (I use the word losely) were again asleep at the keyboard. This is not a full time job because they apparently don't work 40 hours a week. The Herals should be ashamed of these two. If Golden called them to say he was taking the job, it probably would go to voicemail. I'm sure they will jsut quote Canesport.com on MOnday any way.

Golden is a great choice. Great job Kirby.
