Nelson's future unresolved; Perryman commits

RALEIGH, NC -- The future of Hurricanes freshman linebacker Kevin Nelson, who left the football team while they were practicing for the Sun Bowl, remains unresolved.

This week, Nelson met with UM coach Al Golden to talk about returning to the team. But according to a source at UM, the 6-foot, 210-pound linebacker from Gainesville was told by Golden he would have to wait until after National Signing Day to receive a final answer.

Nelson (6-0, 210) was considered the third-best inside linebacker in the country by ESPN last February. But he had some issues his freshman season and didn't play for the Hurricanes. According to UM spokesman Chris Freet, no football player had requested a transfer or release of scholarship as of Saturday morning.

> Saturday, the Hurricanes received a commitment from Coral Gables middle linebacker Denzel Perryman during his official visit according to Canesport and InsideTheU.com. We'll have more on Perryman later.

thanks for getting that cleared up.

Looks like it depends on the haul.

If he learns from his mistakes and will come back with a new attitude, I hope he's given the chance. But Golden is not going to go easy on anyone he things quit at the end of last year.

I wish the kid luck. God knows we need good linebackers next year.

@KEVIN NELSON: DO NOT TRANSFER. COME IN WITH GREAT ATTITUDE AND BE READY TO COMPETE. BE SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR TEAMMATES. YOU KNOW THE TEAM NEEDS DEPTH AT YOUR POSITION, SO PROVIDE THAT DEPTH!!! YOU'RE ONLY A SOPHOMORE, THATS YOUTH. CONCENTRATE ON YOUR GRADES FOR NOW AND HELP THE TEAM WIN IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE.

P.S. APOLOGIES IF I OFFENDED ANYONE WITH CAPITAL LETTERS TYPING. GET IT DONE CANES

Cant teach speed, Perryman is nasty!

Great job, Manny! Keep it up.

Why did he leave in the first place. I loved him coming in.

I love how Golden is handling the issue, and I hope Kevin has been given a blueprint of what he needs to accomplish in order to get back on the field!

There's a new Sheriff in town, and his name is Al Golden!!

Go 'canes!

With Ayles and Perryman, how many commits do we have left? With so many good quality visits, it's a shame we don't have a lot more. We still need two at QB.

Great get wit denzel. I hope he comes in wit a desire to start. I think nelson thought he would walk into the starting mlb spot. Guess he stopped caring after dat. I'm glad golden is being tough on him. Maybe he will mature in the future dealing with college football life. The way coaches look at it, theres a bunch of Kevin nelson in high school, so y sweat one dat quit already?

I'm surprised dat a kid like Damon Johnson and some of those other ol guys haven't transferred yet.

Say what you will, but FSU is again racking up one hell of a class. I never understand why.

If Ayles is a new verbal commit, as of yesterday, why isn't his name showing up on Rivals or Scout as such. Does he count towards the total allowed? Hope not, but think so.

With Ayles and Perryman that would bring the total to 14. Although, along with Chickillo, Ricardo Williams is also now a "soft verbal". Don't know why. In any case, if we have only 15, 16 or 17, we're almost done. I wonder if we're going to recruit only one QB, with so many other good prospects coming to town and hopefully interested? Wish Whipple and perhaps one or two others would drop out to give us more selects.

Sad to say, because I just think he was in over his head, but nobody seems interested in hiring Coach Shannon. He certainly has demonstrated skills as a DC, but this lack of interest by any school at any level says something...

Welcome to the family Denzel! You will do great things at the U.

Nelson should transfer, he's never going to get PT at Miami. The fact is that he's just not as good as the other guys right now, and doesn't have the upside they do either.

I hope that Kevin Nelson stays!!!

He has the potential to be a player of Ray Lewis' quality. Also, I believe that he's a big Canes fan at heart.

Congrats and welcome to the U Family Mr. Perryman!

Depth at ILB?
Perryman 5-11 210
+/- Nelson 6 ft 210
?Futch?
Cain?
Pref walk-on Jon Alvarez 6 ft 227
?who else at ILB?

I read somewhere that Golden prefers "bigger" LBS. recruiting perryman at 5-11 gos againt that. don't believe everything you hear!

can't believe Nick O'Leary going to Tallahassee. Weeaaaaaaak! Wonder if his grandpa had anything to do with it, since he is a luckeye alumn. Sorry, Jack, but Nickie made a bad decision. Look at the TEs coming out of the U during bad and good years:

Bubba Franks
Shockey
Kellen Winslow jr
Greg Olsen
Jimmy Graham

No competition son, and now that Jimbo is there with EJ Manuel, they will be playing more of a spread-option like Auburn. Dumb move O'leary!

we also need QBs!!!!!!!

Must get Rudock Must get Rudock~!

I think Randy Shannon was a good coach, what is wrong with a coach that stress education over athletics. I seems like college presidents are moore concern about a kid ability to play moore than they are about there education. Good job coach Shannon for making boys into men.

The Golden Age is here: Perhaps Golden does prefer "bigger" LB's. Bigger can mean height or body type and size, muscular rather than not. Just because Perryman is 5'11" at 217 lbs (bigger than Spence!)doesn't mean Golden doesn't prefer bigger to smaller. It just means he recruited a MLB because of a need by the team and a desire by Perryman to be on the team. A good fit.

UM Fan: Nelson has the potential of Lewis! Perhaps, but he apparently hasn't made anyone aware of that potential through his actions. Potential will get you just so far.

Golden is really attracting a good amount of good quality prospects with the visits. With so many good looking visits this weekend would like to see us get a DL and a S - DT Grimble (a 5* from Las Vegas and a soft verbal to USC) and safety Lee (a 4* from Gardena, CA) would do fine. Three star QB Kevin Sousa, from Orlando is also visiting. He looks like someone who has a high upside, but coming from a very small school and little experience looks to be a project - so little chance of being any help in 2011, if needed.

Why would Coach Shannnon settle for just any job when he is still being paid by the U? Not only will he become a DC again, he will find another Head job at the college level or land on an NFL staff. For those who wanted him gone; time to kill another horse as soon as the novelty wears off and reality sets in. Why not focus on your present. In reality, the U has succeeded well beyond expectations based on facilities and fan base over the years. Randy is not the first or last victim of those limitations.

John 3: Agree with you. And who knows if Shannon has received any offers?

Cav, your assessment of Shannon would make him a good guidence counselor, not a good coach.

Shannon should be glad that someone may be interested in him as a DC. And as far as a Head coaching job. If he could not win at Miami with all the talent here in his backyard, how could he take a lesser program and turn it into a winner. C'mon he stunk as a head coach and lived off of Schiano's fumes as a defensive coordinator. Shannon was a victim of himself, plain and simple, not the U.

shannon sucks no other way to put it

Saw a report on ESPN that Shannon may go to UCLA as DC, good for him. His head coaching days are over.

J: He was interviewed by UCLA. That doesnt mean jack yet. Whipple was "leading" contender at U COnn. and didnt get the job. Stifle yourself with the rumors. I will believe it when I see it. Shannon was a horrible motivator, a horrible leader, a horrible game day coach, a horrible communicator, a horrible public relastions person, and a horrible recruiter. yes, I said it. Horrible recruiter. that is, unless he was recruiting at Miami NW. What did that get us?

the TE ayles doesnt count towards this yrs class since its a transfer. HE wass behind some nfl draftees and got hurt. FELLAS, WE GOT A STEAL AT TE. ALSO dont stress about rankings--rivals and scout add up total points, so the more schollies u have the higher your grade. Considering we have a coaching change, and shannon did do 1 good thing and load up the roster, we r ok fellas. a bunch of 3 and 4 star kids with a few all americans is not bad for golden in 1 month. Plus we got a 5 star TE that just transferred from USC------------- WE HAVE TALENT BOYS--------------watch out for golden next yr. TOP 5 class 4 sure

lmao

can fan/cavalier. look shannon is a nice guy but be honest, he had no personality, didnt communicate, alienated media and players, and was a HORRIBLE GAME DAY COACH------since 07 based on espn rankings, we have basically the same talent as all the top programs. U DONT LOSE TO USF, UVA ETC in your 4th yr. ESPNS RANKINGS OF THE U--and their grading system is better and we will finish high
2007 #9
2008#1
2009 #7
2010#13

they dont just add up total points like rivals and scout, but base it on needs and players. My point is you dont lose 5 and 4 games in yr 3 and 4 when you have top talent like that. back in 08, we had like 12 or 13 of the top 150 players in america. Game day coaching makes a difference============= a nick saban might have had UM 11-1 this yr you never know. BUT WE HAVE A TON OF TALENT AND DEPTH NOW---thats why only have 17 schollies. shannon did actually fill the roster with 3 4 5 star players------------- Boise, oregon,tcu---------go look at classes from 07-10 tell me how many 4 and 5 stars u see. NOT MANY-------------ITS COACHING

Keven Nelson might be an all world talent but Golden is going to put team first over individuals. That alone is worth 3-4 victories a year. I hope Kevin gets a second chance and makes the most of it. Canes have two first rounders in the draft. Old times are back again and we will probably roll off another 15 yars in a row of providing a first round pick. All aboard for the Cane Express!

Lets just be happy we were able to keep Perryman home. We now need a couple DL's men, Depth at LB wont be as revealing if we control the front. Its time for D'Nofrio (sp?) pull in a couple nasties in the Middle. Jonathan Jenkins and Gosha are the best "possibilities". Hopefull Drew who will grow into a DL in the future. But I see it as paramount we get a couple DL's because be honest our front at times was gashed!

For those that are worried about size at the LB position, I guess you do not remember the lil beast Rohan Marley as our LB. He was a good one.

Come on coach, tell Nelson where he stands now. Why have the young man wait until after NSD. This is wrong!

Excellent point about Rohan Marley. HE WAS A BEAST....played with Ray Lewis a yr or two.

OMG...let's forget Shannon...PLEASE, those are days I don't want to THINK ABOUT...don't want to remember...I can see him now, standing on the sidelines, arms folded, LOOKING LOST/CONFUSED, like a deer caught in a car's headlights!
It's time to move on..........forward, not backward!!

It is a shame that Shannon ruined another player's (Nelson) future.

The Golden Rules! Am so stoked at the energy and the excitement Coach Golden has brought to Coral Gables. Coach Golden, we love you! Keep it coming! whooosh, whooosh!

NELSON A QUITTER NOTHER SHANNON PLAYER TEAM FULL OF THEM DONT WANT HIM BACK. BY THE WAY WHEN DOES FRANK HAITH STOP GETTIG A PASS CAUSE HE IS A NICE GUY YOU KNOW WHERE THEY FINNISH AND THATS JUST WHERE CANES ARE THIS GUY CANT RECRUIT SHOUL HAVE HIRED SETH GREENBERG BACK THEN WE WOUL BE IN THE BIG DANCE.WAY 2 GO KATIE MEIER AND LADY CANES

GO GATORS!!!!

Candycanes....get over it and face the real facts. The U is a has-been program that

If I'm not mistaken a kids scholarship can be taken away if he is not performing up to standards, guidlines, performance,or academics but is there a time line in wich you have, to revoke a scholarship and use it before signing day. thanks for the info if someone can clerify.

I know we have numerous kids that should have their free ride revoked.
