PODCAST: Will UM's recruiting efforts pay off on West Coast?

With a week to go before National Signing Day the Miami Hurricanes have 13 commitments and about a dozen more recruits they are still after.

It's not humanly possible to chase down all the rumors and all the players coach Al Golden and his staff have gone after over the last five weeks. So, instead, I chased down two of the experts who work the recruiting circuit 24/7 for a living -- Scout.com's Mike Bakas and Brandon Huffman.

Bakas has covered Hurricanes recruiting for 10 years. In our conversation, he provided some good insight on new UM commitment Rashawn Scott, a 6-2, 200-pound receiver from Melbourne Central Catholic. We also talked about who Bakas thinks the Canes really have a shot at signing come Wednesday (yes, he believes UM will land Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett) and a lot more.

Huffman, the Regional Recruiting manager on the West Coast for Scout.com, will have JUCO defensive back Byron Moore on his show Monday night to announce his choice between UM and Tennessee. Huffman knows all about Brennan Carroll and Jethro Franklin and the work they did on the West Coast as recruiters. Huffman talks about that, which California 2011 recruits UM really has a shot at and which 2012 players the Canes have already given written offers to. You don't want to miss that.

This is what championship football smells like right here.

Waste of time with the west coast recruits. In the past UM would grab one or two per year like Gino T.or Kelen W. Now UM has two coaches out there and it doesn't make sense. All the speed is in FL Tx Ga AL La Miss. Comb the 83,87,89,91,01 NC teams. combined maybe 8 players from Cali.Even the best college player in California Andrew Luck is from TX. Take a look at the top 50 players for 2011 draft. Most are from the south FL TX AL Ga

amen--got to have a core from south florida

I agree with you UMsince 77; focus on getting FL, TX, and AL talent. Going north east to find a QB may also help.

Yeah, no one in California can run fast. Give me a break. The game is changing across the country. Kids are becoming more narcissistic because they see what "me" gets on the biggest of college and pro stages if they can play, and the parents love the idea of using their kids as perennial meal tickets. As a diehard Canes fan, the college game has evolved to where I'd watch a Pac-10 game over an ACC game any day because the quality of play out west has become tremendous, and MANY of those kids are from California. East coast bias in today's world is shortsighted and ignorant. The Southeast is a football hotbed, but it hasn't taken long for the rest of the country to catch up.

Before you start proclaiming this stuff actually take a look at the last 5 drafts. Fl and Cal have the most players drafted. With the amount of Tx leading last year, followed by Tx. Cal and Tx are states that are rich in skill player, specially QB's. Aside from JH tell me when we had a successful QB from Fl.

Having a global recruiting program versus a local only program in today’s competitive college football environment is a necessity, not a luxury.

Coach Golden developed a national coaching staff. People that have ties nationwide. SoFla is great for our core but we need to be able to be a national program.

USC and Oregon seem to have done fairly well with CA recruits.

Wake up and watch and do your research. The Florida players have not done as well recently as the other states. Canes need good players from all over. We need new attitudes and new blood.

My point Miami has had success in the past with recruiting the south and east coast. Only a few player have made an impact at the U from Cali, so why waste two coaches out there? What do you tell them..ahh UM has had two great palyers from Cali ou can be the third?
and BTW
The best two players from Oregon are sophmores from Tx and the best player USC has is now at UM Henderson from Minn (thanks to Bryant McKinney)
James, LaMichael Texarkana, Texas (Liberty-Eylau HS)

Thomas, Darron Houston, Texas (Aldine HS)

To Mike 33076: "Aside from JH what other quarterback has had success from FL?"

One: are you suggesting that JH was successful? I hope not, because he wasn't.

Two: I believe all of our successful QB's haven't come from the State of Florida.

ATLCANE, lol lol, you got me.

Sure

DJ Williams, Ken Dorsey, Scott Covington off the top of my head.

The "UM has only recruited two California players" comment can be taken another way...maybe we haven't done a very good job of recruiting that target rich territory and Al Golden is prudently correcting that deficiency.

Growing up playing high school football I was alway told the 4 best states are FL, CA, TX and Ohio. That's what every high school coach I've ever had has told me. Plus it seems like the majority of Texas schools run the Spread. West Coast has talent.

Thanks Manny

I am all for new blood, but if you abandon your base you will fail. Long after Al Golden and his crew is gone UM will suffer if you don't make home a PRIORITY.

I seem to remember a fella by the name of Ken 'Field General' Dorsey coming from Cali. Nothing wrong with picking up some west coasters. We used to get them from Canada too. As long as they produce, who cares?

So Y does UM have 2 coaches in Cali?

Please look at the SEC who dominates the FBS all those players are southern based players with Florida leading the way.

Look at the roster's of OU OSU UT LSU TCU Tx AM Baylor,Tx Tech,,all these school have more than half or a quarter of their players from Tx.

It takes two coaches to find a Ken Dorsey from Cali? And if I am correctly Ken Dorsey and Gino had great Florida and Southern talent around them which made them great college QB's Make no mistake they were only good in college because what was around them. The NFL exposed them as average to below next level talent.

The SEC is winning because of its coaching staffs. Miamis previous staff couldn't help the progression of players. USC did pretty well all those years with west coast players. Besides, we are always going to have more FL players than any other state. Now every school picks players out of FL and we need connections in other states.

SEC is winning because of TALENT..so did Urban Meyer all of a sudden turn into a bad coach???if he had Cam (talent) he would have won it all again? Gene Chizik won 5 games at IOWA ST in two years?(5-19)..was that becuase of talent or coaching?..

Great points UMsince 77. You seem to know your stuff.

In most cases certain states are known for producing certain positions;

QB - Cal Pa TX
RB - Fl Cal Tx
TE - TX PA CAL
WR - Fl Cal Tx
OL - TX Oh PA
DL - Fl OH PA
LB - Fl Cal PA Tx
DB - Fl TX

This staff is divided up in three geographical areas. You have guys like Tony Richardson and Micheal Barrow that are South Florida guys. George McDonald isn't from South Florida, but he's been recruiting it his entire coaching career.

Coaches Golden, Mark D'Onofrio and Paul Williams have the North East and Mid-Atlantic on lock down while Jethro Franklin and Brennan Carroll own California, due to their west coast ties. Those guys have ALSO RECRUITED IN TEXAS as well.

Please note that the 2 coaches also recruit in Texas. So relax UMsince77. It's not the end of the world. Other than hiring you as a coordinator, Golden has a good plan.

Mike thanks..look at your list. Maybe Miami needs 3 coaches in TX and 2 in PA.

California has talent too. I agree with some of the posters in that we should focus on FL, TX, GA, AL, but a couple of Cali kids keeps them away from the always dangerous USC, UCLA, STAN, OR etc...

Well when I hear all this "California recruiting talk" "Pete Carroll guy hire" talk it seems like UM is getting away from what brought home 5 rings..more than all schools combined in California the last 30 yrs...when I don't see comments from Tx,Al,La its seems like we are moving west...maybe Art Kehoe will remind AL what works..

Agree Casper very much. Listen, Golden KNOWS his base is going to be from south Florida, He has made that clear already by his outreach to local talent and coaches that have been overlooked by last staff. I think having Carol bring his Cali connections to Miami are just icing on the cake. I am very pleased with how Golden is strategically putting pieces of staff together to maximize recruiting efforts not only here but in other talent rich areas. GO CANES!

Omfg the world of college football has evolved. You need kids from out of state. He had 1 month to recruit and you are already bitching that he hasn't made hone a priority. Take a long hard look at the commit list.....hmmmmmm most of it is Florida kids. I have more than enough faith that he will lock down the area once he get an actual full year to recruit. Calm down old man.

Pro Bowl frequently fliers.. Reggie Wayne and Ed Reed all time UM greats ..Louisiana in the house!!! and UM passed on Marshall Faulk.

Urban is the most overrated coach possibly ever.

The first thing Muschamp did was change out tha high school offense that worked awhile and now SEC defensive coordinators can't wait to play the Gators.

And the biggest thing that made Urban such a super star in the eyes of the media? Tebow!

The biggest question to me was how does a super star coach go 7 & 5 after posting top 5 recruiting classes over the last 4 or 5 years--especially when you consider the laughingly weak schdule tha Gators played (Only 4 away games--seriously...are you kidding me?).

You're kidding me...He quit again???

You made my point ..TALENT WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS..IT OVER COMES BAD COACHING

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not going to ring my hands with worry regarding this or any other recruiting class The Golden Era brings in.

Why? When you have a coach who's player development process has PROVEN, yes PROVEN to develop players to, and seemingly beyond, their potential you need not worry.

Proven? Just look at what Golden was able to do with his recruiting classes at Temple.

6 kids from his first recruiting class are playing in the NFL. 2 of those in the NFL never played a down of HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL! His following classes have seen the same improvement. And yes, there are a few of those kids that never played a down of high school football in his following classes that are on track for the NFL.

This, my fellow Canes fans, is player development.

Stop The Hand Ringing! ALL IS WELL AT THE U!

GO CANES!

You can't fault the coaching staff for going after California kids. California is what the coaches know and they had success and recruiting ties there. This staff was put together in the middle of recruiting so the coaches are only recuiting what and where they know for right now. I hope that more emphasis will be placed on Florida kids in 2012 with QB being the #1 priority. Understand that Miami came into this recuiting process late so that is why I believe we only pick up 1 QB. We'll be fine !

Florida is recruited so hard it is hard for Golden to catch up in the state in the short amount of time they have.

He will make home a priority.

Chill out.

Anytime you have a system where three QB's are in at the same time, something isn't right. It seems obvious that Urban promised those kids playing time early, than realized his scheme of pure talent could never work. Team unity trumps talent!

6 guys from Temple's first recruiting class in the NFL and Al Golden couldn't win the MAC?...hmmm sounds familiar.. more like all is the same at the U!!

Reggie Bush,Matt leinart, Rey mauluga, desean Jackson, marshawn lynch, matt Barkley, mark Sanchez, dayne crist, rahim Moore, jahvid best, sedrick Ellis all played H.S ball in Cali. Your right we didn't want any of those losers.

Posted by: You're kidding me...He quit again???

Yeah - Urban is overrated. He lost 9 players to the NFL and to steal a line from the canes, his team was young. Get over the Gators already. Your name says it all - your infatuated with them and you are looking to get some of the gator fans to start arguing on here.

Go 'canes.

Reggie Bush,Matt leinart, Rey mauluga, desean Jackson, marshawn lynch, matt Barkley, mark Sanchez, dayne crist, rahim Moore, jahvid best, sedrick Ellis all played H.S ball in Cali. Your right we didn't want any of those losers.

We have all those type of players right here at home. Without the 6 hr flt and going on probation to get them...

Great discussion todaY. Agree with Casper and the others that the new staff is built to recruit nationally. Sure you want the BEST players. A lot of great players are out on the left coast, and Texas and the Southeast and Ohio and Western PA. for sure. However, a kid growing up in South Florida will more likely dream of being a Cane. As the UM progresses, this dream will occur with kids more frequently across the country (AS IT ONCE DID). It will be a good thing. But, you still have to recruit talent from the rich areas in the country, and it looks like that is what Coach Golden is shooting for. Why overlook any hotbeds of talent? The only limitation will be your resources and your reputation.

You're kidding me...He quit again???

Re-read my post...

I clearly state that Meyer has had top 5 recruiting classes over the last number of years, which means the Gators had the talent--NOT THE COACHING!!!

Anytime you have a system where three QB's are in at the same time, something isn't right. It seems obvious that Urban promised those kids playing time early, than realized his scheme of pure talent could never work. Team unity trumps talent!

Bubba you are WRONG..Army,Airforce and Navy has more Team Unity than any school in the County. ..how many BCS games have they played in?

youre kidding me. Ok that was funny. Real good. LOL.

miami is national, so lets look every where there is a play maker. second its late in recruiting most of the best players in fl are gone so even if al golden didnt want to look all over he would have to now.

All we have to do is get all the 5 and 4 stars out of South Florida and we will be a National Power! WE shoujld not allow Fl. FSU or any other school to come into our backyard and steal our players!

OH I forgot the 3 florida schools were undefeated. Oh wait 15 losses between them. Keep only with scrawny florida players
