PODCAST: Will UM's recruiting efforts pay off on West Coast?

With a week to go before National Signing Day the Miami Hurricanes have 13 commitments and about a dozen more recruits they are still after.

It's not humanly possible to chase down all the rumors and all the players coach Al Golden and his staff have gone after over the last five weeks. So, instead, I chased down two of the experts who work the recruiting circuit 24/7 for a living -- Scout.com's Mike Bakas and Brandon Huffman.

Bakas has covered Hurricanes recruiting for 10 years. In our conversation, he provided some good insight on new UM commitment Rashawn Scott, a 6-2, 200-pound receiver from Melbourne Central Catholic. We also talked about who Bakas thinks the Canes really have a shot at signing come Wednesday (yes, he believes UM will land Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett) and a lot more.

Huffman, the Regional Recruiting manager on the West Coast for Scout.com, will have JUCO defensive back Byron Moore on his show Monday night to announce his choice between UM and Tennessee. Huffman knows all about Brennan Carroll and Jethro Franklin and the work they did on the West Coast as recruiters. Huffman talks about that, which California 2011 recruits UM really has a shot at and which 2012 players the Canes have already given written offers to. You don't want to miss that.

On the Podcast it was said that Miami may sign as high as 25 kids to this class. If so it sounds like the staff plans on cutting a few kids loose and a few don't want to stay. Should be interesting to see who leaves.

Mark, I agree 100% but with two poor season and a month of decent recruiting we don't have a choice but to look, for diamonds in the rough, all over our the country. If we can win 9 or 10 games later this year going outside of Fl will not be a big need. FSU and FL will have their hands full with Golden if we have a good year.

2 NC ,BCS bowl games, Heisman..and didn't lose to USF or ND..and our coach isnt from Temple

The U won't be signing NCAA yearly limit of 25. They'll probably sign 15 to 17 kids because they only have about 15 to give out. Scholarships are yearly renewable, but coaches usually don't withdraw many scholarships because it would be a negative in future recruiting, and causes rifts with HS coaches. And a rift with a HS coach is hard to fix. Randy ran off Marve, and the best QB in the state the following 2 years was Aaron Murray who went to the same HS as Marve, do you think that coach would recommend Murray go to the, absolutely not. Murray went to Georgia where he is one of the top QB's in the SEC.

Good one but we will be back pending the cold weather, our youth, a new stadium, all the players in the NFL who come back, our swagga, the beaches, and the home field advantage of a 1/2 filled professional stadium.

Go 'canes!

77, IF talent overcomes bad coaching then why was Shannon such a loser then? Just shut up and let Golden and his guys do their thing and we will be successful again at the U.

Sarasota 'cane

You forgot Al Golden had 6 players from his first class a Temple go to the NFL..never mind finishing 4th in The Mighty MAC Conference..he will save the U.

We are getting kids from CA because we are losing our recruiting battle in South FL to other schools.

Not too long ago, most of talented kids in South FL wanted to play for the U. But now they see no future in U and are going to other schools like FSU, UF, USF and UCF... heck even some kids are going to FIU...

This is sad for the "U", is "U" really over? Is the being only bowl-lossed team in FL going to really hurt us?? the firing of Randy and new the coach from MAC?? We still have no stadium... UF, FSU, UCF, FIU got stadium, heck, even FAU is building a brand new stadium.

Are we ever going to win another national championships? atleast conference championships? we haven't won since we moved to ACC.

How are we going to compete against these FL schools, if we keep losing games and losing fans. As a alumni of U, I'm truly concerned...

Only you guys think UM is full of talent. If the talent is there and Golden is the next coming UM will BCS NC 2011..NOT NOT NOT..Golden struggled in the MAC..the ACC will eat him alive

Damn LMAO I can't remember where Muschamp was headcoach before UF. Remind me again?

Where else besides Fla. would you want to recruit, Cali. I don't care where they come from, as long as we coachem better than Shannon did. We lost S. Fla. this year because one Shannon got lazy and two we played poorly. Look at all the kids who baled: Johnson, Holliman, Therize, Robeson, Benjamin, C. Davis, M. Lane, Hart, Greene, Rogers, Bridgeman, I mean most, If not all were 4 stars recruits. I mean we got ambushed. Will end up with a good class, it just won't be a top 20 but stranger things have happened. If we could get Drew, Grimble, Lee & Brissett, we could end up inside the top 20.

Damn LMAO I can't remember where Muschamp was headcoach before UF. Remind me again?

I think the school of the blind..and they beat Temple by 21 points

Why is it assumed Miami is "abandoning" South Florida? Maybe 20 years ago South Florida belonged to Miami, but not anymore. The SEC and Big 10 have been raiding Florida for years now. Florida, Florida State, USF, and even UCF get players from South Florida every year. Get over it. I don't care if a kid is from Idaho. If he has talent and fits the scheme, he should be recruited. All this talk of recruiting only South Florida is ridiculous and a joke. What has Miami done since 2002? Nothing. Time for a change. It's 2011. Get on board or get out of the way. Have some faith in Golden and drop your blind allegiance to Dade and Broward. Most of these recent Miami kids haven't panned out.

What an incredible change of pace recruiting wise versus the last 6-8 years...surely this will translate into great things! Go Canes!!!

Is "fakey" posting as me and then logging back in as LMAO to have a conversation with himself? Classic nut case!!

Utah still wants a piece of your crap title! I think that says it all right there! Before the BCS they would have split that abortion you call the "greatest season in UF history" right down the middle.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take a split title over the last few seasons UM has had, but don't hold that piece of glass they gave you Tools in '08 up to the diamonds they gave us in '87 and '01! It's laughable.

Go Google "greatest college football teams of all time" and tell me what you see! UF is right at the top...because they lost to Neb. in one of the most lop-sided NC games of all time! But not to worry, UM and FSU are repping the state quite nicely!

It's who U are, own it!

Go 'canes!!

DeSean Jackson - long beach poly - Cal - he can run a little bit i think

Agree sarasots- The loser can also google "YOU TUBE VIDEO "FLORIDA SUCKS" that says it all.

Golden has stated it many times, so if your hearing aid wasnt turned up here it is again-The rock solid core of our recruiting will once again be the STATE OF MIAMI but we will utilize the staff connections in Cali, Tex and the NE to supplement our recruiting core. Golden AL even went further to say that he is only going out of state to get the best of the best. And whoever thinks that Cali doesnt produce talent is more CLUELESS than the SWAMP LIZARD TROLLS that frequent this blog like its their job.

Oh and speaking of the SWAMP LIZARD TROLLS, here is a little sum-sum to chew on, straight from your kissing cousins....

"Muschump is working wonders with his staff. First, they were applauded for getting Kelvin Benjamin to hold off on his commitment to FSU. He eventually still commits. He meets with an AA LB and a week later he commits to OSU. He meets with Nick Waisome and he converts to FSU. Then he gets current commitments to come out to make statements that they are still committed. Then slowly one by one they are dropping out.
So, the staff really hasn’t picked up any big time recruits and have struggled to keep the ones they have. For this, the gator writers and fans are excited?!?!? Some gator fans have actually said Muschump has talked some hig rated commitments into decommitting because they aren’t any good. You can’t make this stuff up!!!

We better be concerned about the 3 star. We aren’t #2 or #3 or #4 on many 4 or 5 star players right now. This hire has turned out to be colossal joke. Muschamp is inexperienced. Weis is a lazy, fat blob that receives too much credit for what somebody else did at New England. The offense at KC improved because of the RB and OL coach. The man couldn’t score but 7 points in their last game. To top it off, he hires Young, who has no real coaching experience to the DL. Great player, not a coach. Now, we also have Meyer sticking around. Kick him to the curb because he left us high and dry.
Foley pulled another Zook and the recruits know it. We are about to lose 2 more recruits and we may have to sign several 2 stars to fill out our roster. Why didn’t Foley go after someone with real coaching experience like Peterson, Harbaugh, Fisher, Stoops, etc. They were all there for the taking and he bent over and took it in the poop chute.
Meanwhile, Al Golden just landed another 2 more 4 star recruits at miami. That guy seems like a hard worker and a good coach. I may be in the minority here, but I would much rather have golden than muskrat. The guy has been killing us on the recruiting trail. Canes and Noles on the way up… Us??? Back to the 1980 – early 90’s. THANKS FOLEY!!!!

Wrong, Miami did not pass on Marshall Faulk. The problem was that Dennis Erickson recruited him as a DB and the kid wanted to play RB. Looks like Dennis was wrong about his right position. Several other schools also felt his best spot was as a DB, so it wasn't just Dennis.

Posted by: Sarasota 'cane

Yes, being the only FL team to lose a bowl game is repping the state fairly well!

One rumor that did turn out to be true is that Florida is losing its recruiting coordinator and running backs coach Stan Drayton to Ohio State, where he will be the wide receivers coach.

Uh-oh that cant be good sooo close to signing day....

Some Canes fans are such losers. Stop the complaining already. Randy Shannon got a whole bunch of players from Florida and they got him fired. Stop whining stop complaining. For those complaining that are so knowledgable why aren't you in college football working as a recruiter. All you arm chair QBs just shut up already. You're all losers that know nothing and just want to complain. I don't care if you've been Canes fans since 77 you don't know what you're talking about. Just shut up and let this team get back to its winning ways. I will take a recruit from China if he can help the U. Stop complaining and let the staff do its thing. If you think Cali players don't have great players then you must not watch College Football. Boise St. gets their players from Cali I wonder why they've been in the top ten the past few years. Everyone spews nonsense, complaining just to complain just shut up support the team and leave the recruiting analysis to the experts.

@Mark Drebin -- South Florida is FSU's for the taking. You're right about UM dominating S Fla...for 3 star players. NC's are over for the Canes. Your NFL stadium is too far away, it's sterile, boring, not intimidating, your fans don't show up, etc. I used to go to the Orange Bowl and know we're were gonna lose. I'd like to thank your previous 5-star recruit for 2012 (A.J. Leggett - Miami) for committing to FSU. FSU has a road map. UM has none. Subpar facilities, no money to build them or on-site campus. Desperate is what it is. Golden is taking several guys who FSU or UF would not even consider. Go ahead, claim you've always won with 3 star players. I know you don't believe me, but you will in a couple years. You've still have decent players from pre-2010 recruiting, but 2010, 2011 was a joke class. It's a different game now. H.O.P.!

Hey Muschump! How many recruits have you got so far?

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/files/2011/01/os-florida-will-muschamp.jpg

TheWhat strong post...........very very good.

Agree that 6 Temple players in the NFL and no MAC championship is of concern. However, UM has some positive energy surrounding it for the first time in a while. I personally believe that Coach Golden will make us a significant force again, in recruiting, player development and wins on the field. We will see a team playing with high level intensity week to week. I am excited about the staff and the energy level of this Coach as a leader of the program.

All we need now is an on campus or at least nearby stadium to boost the excitement and secure home field advantage. One step at a time. Go Canes!

Are you kidding me! Guys on here criticising Golden for dedicating recruiting efforts in Cali! Plus Jethro also focusing on Texas. Al in NE, He and Richardson in the State of Miami and the Southeast! Where is it written that we will not build our foundation in Florida? Get a grip. We should be shouting glory that we have such an organized and intense recruiting operation. You guys gotta stop letting your fantacies run away with you.

All we need now is an on campus or at least nearby stadium to boost the excitement and secure home field advantage.

Good lord you are dumb Sean Wilson. We don't need a stadium. We have a professional stadoum that recruits love.

So Miami doesn't have talent? FSU and Texas don't have talent? Its about coaching, but of course u need talent. Why bring up Iowa State, a small program? Just ask UMsince 77, he knows it all! HAHAHAHA

Any of you ever heard of Oregon, Boise St....how about USC or TCU...those schools recruit on the west coast and do pretty well. Think about this...how many top 10 recruiting classes have Boise St and TCU had? Try NONE. Yet the teams are very competitive and very disciplined. Randy Shannon and his coached were recruiting players that rivals and scout said were good players. Often the coaches had not even ever evaluated them. You have to get players that are smart and players that fit your system. We need a south florida core complemented with national talent. Don't forget Ken Dorsey was from California and was recruited because he was a good system QB. Relax. Golden and his crew have got this. I am impreesed!!!!

To all of you so call Cane fans and college football experts please someone take the time to explaine to me how a high school senior QB is able to led his team to two Florida 6A State championship and as a senior a mythical national championship.

The one thing I don't seem to understand is that this same young man was able to call his own plays over 90% of the time during his senior year. Yet this same young man, according to the expert die heart Cane fans to dumb to play the position for the "U".

Please give this unknow QB a better play caller, a better running game and turn hime lose and hopefully JH-12 will now be able to bring the sixth NC back to south Florida. To understand the need for a better play call please listen to the interview by new OC Jedd Fesch on todays Michael Irving Schow on WQAM 560 AM radio station, you will then see what a true play caller sounds like.

And to answer any question about the qualification of the new OC and his poor record at University of Minnesota the level of talent for a pro-style offense was not there.

Some Canes fans are such losers. Stop the complaining already. Randy Shannon got a whole bunch of players from Florida and they got him fired. Stop whining stop complaining. THIS!!! If California produces such horrendous players, why does USC have 11 national championships? Why does the PAC 10 (who gets most of it's players from Cali' have the most national championships (all sports) than any other conference. People like to just talk. If UM can get playres from Ecudaor, Sri Lanka, Ivory Coast or Bosnia, I don't care!! In the words of Mike Singletary, "I want winners"!!!!

It is stupid, idiotic really, to have a geographical bias in recruiting. The smart strategy is to recruit the best players, wherever they live. Some of the best South Florida players want to get away from there and go elsewhere. Miami's strength is that it has appeal to players from everywhere. Golden knows he can skim the cream of the crop nationwide. He could not do that at Temple. As far as Florida kids being so great, how did Miami almost lose to Nevada with a bunch of California 2* players? How did Miami lose in the bowl game to Cal? I bet they had some California players. OSU and Wisconsin have made the Canes look like a bunch of slow, flabby creampuffs. Were those Florida players? What about the Florida players who lay down and play dead against VA (48-0) in the last Orange Bowl game? What did those superior Florida players do against VA, USF, and ND this year? Perhaps those games showed what happens when you apply wretched coaching to talented players. Hopefully, we will soon see the results of good coaching in Miami. When it comes to recruiting, I want to get the best players, whether they come from Coral Gables HS or from Mongolia. I am confident Al Golden will ignore the "Florida only" bigots.

Manny wrote - "With a week to go before National Signing Day the Miami Hurricanes have 13 commitments and about a dozen more recruits they are still after." Which begs the question - how many more commitments do we have?

my point of view is that you have to have a good QB, otherwise, Hurricane will never win a championship.
If we had a good QB this year, I bet you, we'd win 10 games this year. Therefore we need to go after a good QB in this class.

Relax!!! Ballers are ballers, no matter where they come from. Don't worry...I think Golden will maintain the Florida core.

Have to recruit California for the Big Arm Quarterback and some Defensive line help. Perhaps if the South Florida kids would look in their backyard we would not need to go to California. They do have an abundance of QB's that turn out great. Texas has plenty but not as good. We need to become QB "U" again.

florida is done, forget about them. its fsu now who we have to worry about. fsu finally getting rid of garbage bowden makes them a threat. muschump is awful at florida

Don't worry West Coast is only for this year because of time. In the years to come Golden will build relationships with south fla coaches and west coast will be not as important.

Stanfords Andrew Luck is from Texas. So is Ark Ryan Mallet,Oregon's Darron Thomas, Bama Greg McElroy..UM go to TX PLEASE

USC has won 11 Championships in nearly 90 yrs starting in 1928..5 were won before blacks were allowed to play college football. Get Out of here with USC

A lot of good stuff tonight, guys. Most are good points.

I think AG is just going hard for the best (perceived) available at this time, given the short time he's had to work. He's already shown that he wants the South Florida players REAL BAD.

I'm going to sit back and wait and see how this plays out over the next week or so.

Posted by: UMsince77 | January 27, 2011 at 08:20 AM

Um, we're in Cali because of Carroll and the relationships he built the entire year while he was at USC. I guess that doesn't make sense to you. I hope it does now.

We don't have those relationships here in So Flo except for the ones Barrow has. That's it.

You gotta go with your strengths, and right now, Cali is it. While of course Golden is building relationships in So Flo, and may just get some to come. But if not, who cares? The guy has only be here a month. Hold your judging until next year IMHO.

How many commits do we have left? This seems to be a big mystery. First 15 was mentioned, then 15, 16 or 17. We have several prospects that might have an interest and we're now at 13. That leaves only 2 to 4 left to go, if those numbers are right - and we're after about a dozen more. Huh? Seems like we're running out of road about to reach a dead-end, and with so many possible opportunities to grasp. How will we be able to take advantage of those opportunities if, let's say, 6 of the dozen want to commit to the U? I hope there's a way.

thank you USC

For those that say that Al Golden never won the MAC there is a reason for that. Bad offense. If you noticed who did coach golden leave behind at temple. That tells you he recognized the fact that the OC was not up to par. Their defense was ranked #17 in the country which tells you our defense going forward should be phenomenal. But defense alone can only win you so many games unless you have the great ravens or bears defensive units that won the superbowl. The fact that golden recognized his OC was not up to par and got someone new tells you al golden is going to fare much better if the OC does a good job. The defense should be great it's the offense that we have to wait and see about. If Fisch is good then I say watch out for the U.

The What?..stop making excuses, Enuff of that already and he hasnt had a chance to stink it up yet...so if what you are saying is true...why is the world would he hire an OC that sucked at Minnesota?..what going on with canes and fins and the coaches that they hire?..LMAO

LMAO, He's not making excuses idiot, he is stating facts. When Fische was at Minnesotta they were a spread team that was implementing a prostyle offense which is entirely different. You have to get a different kind of personel to make that change successful and that takes time and recruiting years. Remember when Dennis was here we were in a sense a spread team, then Butch come in and changed us back to a prostyle offense. Those first years were hard because in a spread offense the linemen are built for pass protection not runblocking. It is easier to go from a prostyle offense to a spread than it is the other. When U learn something about football then come talk with grownups that know the game. Later junior.

You're kidding me right????????????

The Miami Hurricane shave dominated college football for over 30 years with 5 National Championships, thst should have been 6 if not for a cheating ref and you are stupid enough to throw that Florida record up...LMAO!!!!

For years you have bellowed you had the best coach ever and the best recruiting classes filled with nothing bit 5 star players, yet you were lucky to go 7 & 5 last year playing the most cowardly/weakest schedule in division 1A football.

Two of those championships are courtesy of one player...Tim Tebow. And since Tebow's departure you are back in your rightful place in college football having been ranked in the bottom 10 at one point during this season.
