Kirby Hocutt has left his post as athletic director at the University of Miami for the same job at Texas Tech.
"I am deeply disappointed that after only two-and-a-half years of a very successful tenure as leader of our athletics programs, Kirby Hocutt has decided to accept the AD position at Texas Tech," UM president Donna Shalala said in a statement.
"We did everything we could to convince him to stay, but in the end it was an intensely personal decision. I thank Kirby for his integrity, leadership, and dedication to the University.”
The move comes less than three months after Hocutt fired Randy Shannon and hired Al Golden to coach the Hurricanes' football team.
Hocutt released a statement through UM at around 6 p.m. Friday evening.
"While I am very excited about the unique and special opportunity that is ahead at Texas Tech it was a very difficult decision to leave the University of Miami," Hocutt said in the statement. "While I am proud of the progress and advancement we have made in Coral Gables, there is never an easy time to leave and the job at the University of Miami was not complete.
"There are great things in the future for Miami Athletics. The leadership, confidence and support I received during my time at the U from President Shalala and the entire Board of Trustees, and especially Paul DiMare was superior. I could not have asked for anything more. Again, I am confident that the foundation has been set to return this proud program back to national prominence.
"While you can never control the timing in which opportunities present themselves there is no question this is the correct decision for me and my family. The opportunity to return home and be near family and friends is one that we are excited about."

He probably wanted to go back to Texas. South Florida is a tough place to live if you're not from there.

First thing the new AD needs to do is fire Haith, something that Holcutt wouldn't do.
Posted by: Fred | February 26, 2011 at 06:46 PM
New AD first order of work. Fire Haith, Holcutt didn't have the you know what to do it.

Mainecane, I don't even know the hell Sean Wilson is and I've got better things to do than pretend on another team's website. If I was going to pretend to be a grad of a school I'd choose one more highly ranked than UM Law. Talk to me when Miami finally starts winning again, instead of getting beat 48-0 in the Orange Bowl's finale to UVA. Believe me, I'm a UM fan, I just want to win. Also, if you are from Maine, that place sucks too. I know, I'm from Boston. Real talk.

Most Ante up guys.
I do.

hey gator fan, youre pathetic. Real talk.

Here's hoping that UM hires THE BEST PERSON for the AD job, and that Shalala doesn't have a liberal guilt spasm and hires someone from the politically correct group of the week.
UM needs a major winner with a track record, and a major fund raiser devoted to excellence in all sports!
Go Canes!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You claim to have graduated from UM Law School...If that were true, which it most certainly is not, then you are 100% right, our Law School would be pathtic...which it is not!
You also claim to have better things to do, yet you squat on this site slamming everything about the "U", while cooing how great everything is with the Gators. Listen stupid, you're cowardly act has grown tiresome on all of the UM sports blogs and no one buys your stupidity.
Here's the deal:
Your crazy coach quit on you twice inside of a 12 month period
Your team boasts just shy of 40 felony arrests.
You cowards are petrified to play the Canes as Hocutt begged Foley to renew the series and he ran and hid...again!
Your football schedule is the most cowardly in all of the NCAA and even when you try to schedule a National Championship you go 7 & 5, with only 4 away games.
Your program is being looked at by the NCAA who is ready to launch a major investigation in the coming months that will end in serious sanctions similar to USC's.
You are a joke as is your laugable team...always remember junior the great Miami Hurricanes have 5 National Championships and are on the way to 5 more.

Hey dude, if I was Sean Wilson I would say so and tell you to f off. I can assure you that UM law is wack and I actually went there. Seriously, who plays a harder schedule UF or UM? The SEC or the ACC? Get the f out of here. Plus, UF plays FSU too. I'd like UM to enroll some more felons and gangsters like they did back in the day. I mean, when UM and UF play I'm rooting for the Canes but saying stupid nonsense about UF being lame and scared just makes UM fans look stupid and out of touch. Kind of like you sound..

Kosar would be a terrible choice for AD. That guy has some serious life issues.
Posted by: Canesjunkie | February 26, 2011 at 10:21 PM
Yeah junk I agree, in the U documentary he sounded like a drunk alcoholic that was sweating it out of his system. His speech was slurred and he looked like a hot mess.

Why did the miami compliance office stop Tommy Streeter from working with Mark Duper? I don't know too much about this McDonald cat other than he is from the NFL and he may be good but Mark Duper's help with Hankerson did wonders for him. McDonald may be good but we know Duper is a proven teacher for recievers. I still would have hired Duper as the reciever coach though.

People need to stop considering Jeff Garcia. He belongs where he's at. A clown at a clown school.
Posted by: NC_Cane | February 27, 2011 at 09:58 AM
Agreed, Duper did a great job with Hankerson. Golden is probably behind this whole thing, I can see his point.
Posted by: Canesjunkie | February 27, 2011 at 09:59 AM
Let me be the first to correct myself.........Pete Garcia.
Posted by: NC_Cane | February 27, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Yeah I can too but Duper did an awesome job.

i'm sure as we climb the polls again, tech will slide down the polls.
