The Miami Hurricanes' chase of Palm Beach Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett is officially over.
Three days after announcing at a basketball he wanted to play for the Gators, the U.S. Army All-American quarterback faxed his signed National Letter of Intent to Gainesville on Monday despite the efforts of his mother to sway him back toward the Canes.
Brissett (6-5, 225) was the top remaining unsigned quarterback in the country and said on Friday that he narrowed his choices down to UM and UF. But he chose to follow his heart -- and three former Dwyer teammates -- to Gainesville, against his mother's wishes.
Former Michigan standout Tate Forcier and Rutgers freshman All-American Tom Savage remain transfer possibilities for the Hurricanes at quarterback. Both would have to sit out the 2011 season if they picked UM per NCAA transfer rules. Forcier is reportedly going to visit UM sometime this week.
Just my opinion, but of the two, Savage is more likely to end up a Hurricane. Forcier had academic issues before leaving Michigan and is more likely to end up closer to home on the West Coast. Savage's grandparents own a home in South Florida.
> As the Canes look for a quarterback of the future, here is an interesting read from Rivals about Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers, who had zero offers coming out of high school.
> The Hurricanes could end up adding another defensive tackle to their 2011 signing class sometime this week. According to InsideTheU.com, Bradenton Manatee senior Quinton Pompey (6-3, 275) still remains unsigned and is waiting on Miami according to his high school coach. Pompey's other offers are from Georgia Southern and Eastern Kentucky. Pompey was lightly recruited because of academic struggles, but has apparently worked them out according to his coach.
> Men's basketball coach Frank Haith, whose team pulled out two close home wins last week to keep their faint postseason hopes alive, said it looks like his two leading scorers Durand Scott and Malcolm Grant, and starting swingman Garrius Adams, finally appear to be getting past the flu.
The bigger concern? Sophomore center Reggie Johnson, who continues to battle issues with his right foot. Johnson, averaging 12 points and 9.9 rebounds a game (third most in the ACC), had bone spurs in his foot earlier this season. He played a season-high 34 minutes in Saturday's overtime win over Virginia.
"He has a reaction in his foot," Haith said during Monday's ACC teleconference. "We got to see that goes. He didn't practice Friday and I think he's going to be tabled at practice. We'll wait to see what the doctors say today."
> ESPN's Bruce Feldman said former UM coach Randy Shannon is supposed to interview for the vacant defensive coordinator job at Maryland later this week. Shannon interviewed for the same position with UCLA last month.
> Looks like another former Hurricanes assistant has landed at Alabama. Joe Pannunzio, who coached the special teams and tight ends under Shannon the last four years, has reportedly been hired in an "off the field role" by Nick Saban. Alabama hired former offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland last month.
> Just a reminder: the Hurricanes baseball team will have its team banquet Friday night at 6 p.m. and Fan Fest Saturday at 3 p.m. Jim Morris' team opens its season at home a week from Friday (Feb. 18) against Rutgers.
> Also, in case you missed Jorge Milian's blog from last week, UM is in talks with Florida State about scheduling next season's game as the season-opener on Labor Day. It's still not finalized.

Well, I for one would hate to see Randy at an ACC school...
my two centavos

Man I hope we schedule FSU on Labor Day. Beat them by 48 points and start off the season the cane way. We just need to keep the INTs down to a minimum and I see ring number 6!!!!
Posted by: Bring back the Orange Bowl! | February 07, 2011 at 02:20 PM
If only we'd given Pannunzio an "off the field role". It would have solved a few problems.
Savage seems like the best bet. But, like many others, I'm mostly hoping for a top 5 and a top 20 QB next year.

Bring back...
I think that's a bit ambitious bro'ham..
I'd love to see it too, pero...NO JODAS MENG'!

thanks manny.. any thing on Kevin Nelson ???.....what have you heard or perhaps seen about university qb gunnar holcombe or gray crow (seems to like nd or fla) i know its soooooo long away from next year recruit class but i wanted your thoughts of them as players not if miami will land them.. although Gunnar says um is his dream school.....thanks

Manny or anyone else who would know,
Have you heard anything about the UM baseball prospect (SS I belive) who is also a QB in high school. Any chance he could play both sports?
Posted by: DK from LA | February 07, 2011 at 02:38 PM
Playin the Noles on Labor Day isnt going to happen. Jimbob isnt going to want to play us and Okla to start off the season. FSU is going to start playing cream puffy schedules just like the swamp lizards because they realize its the easiest way to get to the big game. The BCS rewards cowardly scheduling.

Glad all of that Brisket drama is over. Who cares if Randy becomes DC at Maryland or anywhere else, that week will be a cupcake week for the offensive coordinator. All he has to do is make one adjustment and Randy will be lost. Either one of the transfers would be a great addition, Forcier reminds me of Drew Brees and Savage is more of a prototype perfect fit for our offense so both would be a huge upgrade. That Holcombe kid has a Miami Hurricane QB type name so bring in a top flight QB next year.

FSU already plays a cream puff schedule - ACC and duh U.

Nahhh. If it was a creampuff schedule, it would the SEC lEast. That division is a joke living off the West's dominance. Kentucky? Vandy? Tennessee was last good in Bush's first term.
UFelony: 100 years of insecurity and failure.

The last 2 posters here are ratardes...randy was great as a DC...and Forcier reminds u of Drew Brees????? You have seen them both play?
Posted by: canemutiny | February 07, 2011 at 03:18 PM
I forgot to add uf to the cream puff schedule for the noles. 31 - 7 ouch!
Posted by: Maryland Defensive Coordinator | February 07, 2011 at 03:21 PM
Randy was not a great DC, he was average at best. Did you ever see him make an adjustment to stop anyone? NO. As far as Brees and Forcier analogy, I see some of Brees in the way Forcier plays. I didn't say he was just like Brees. And yes I saw Brees play while at Purdue throughout his career and they both have similarities. U can't compare Brees of the Saints now to Forcier. U have to look at them at the same stage of their careers.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 03:26 PM
Forcier and Brees? Good lord, next thing you are going to tell me is that Uncle Luke is running for mayor...just stop!
Posted by: Oh my.. | February 07, 2011 at 03:34 PM
6th, 7th, 2nd, 28th, 4th, and 7th. That is the U's rank in total defense with Shannon as DC. Yeah, he really did a bad job as DC.
Posted by: Cane in Tally | February 07, 2011 at 03:47 PM
I agree with Cane in Tally.... Say Shannon not great DC is ridiculous .... Look at the numbers and the draft pick!!!!
Posted by: DRich027 | February 07, 2011 at 04:25 PM
Y take a QB from a school that did worse than UM this is Dolphin like..but then again UM's head coach is from Temple...the Jokes grows louder

You are only as good as your last defeat. When UM played LSU in 2005, our supposed top DC, Randy Shannon, was schooled masterfully by Jimbo Fisher, who adjusted cleverly from a pass-oriented scheme and began pounding Jospeh Addai at us as well as mixing in Matt Flynn runs. Shannon was utterly discombabulated. I recall seeing UMplayers running in and out desperately as Shannon couldn't figure out what to do.It was embarassing. THAT was a sign of things to come! So don't tell me how good he was.

If Miami plays the Noles on labor day it will be 4 games in 19 days, and 3 of them heavyweights. Believe it will be too much to take on,with new staff, ease into the transition, please.

I agree. He also had insanely good talent those years our D was ranked so high for the guy throwing up the stats before. even Randy couldn't screw up how good those guys were. And besides if your such a great DC how come since you were head coach the D sucked!
Posted by: THE U | February 07, 2011 at 05:12 PM
Haith is not long for the U,because his
team is so poorly coached.Getting a pass in
from the sidelines is a major effort for this
team.Plays they set up looks like something from"Helter Skelter."Georgia Tech game in 4th
quarter was pathetic,almost blew a 20 pt.lead.

The idea of playing FSU with a new coaching staff, and cramming it into several other tough games in the first weeks of the season is CRAZY!
Hocut, Mr. AD, cut it the heck out! Wake up and give your team and coaches a chance to get acclimated. Stop playing into the hands of these other opponents, and stops scheduling like a Jackwagon!!!

NFL pipeline, quit showing your stupidity. RS was many things, but a bad DC is not one of them.

Tally, thats all U got is numbers and statistics. When he went up against guys like Fisher and Petrino he got schooled every time. I believe the reason U don't want to see Shannon at another school has nothing to do with him being a Cane rather it has to do with the fact that Golden and his staff will house his sorry self and U can't stand that it will happen.

We'll see if anybody ever hires him. For him to be so good U would think everybody would be trying to hire him. Problem is Shannon like Nix's luck has run out and people see that he aint all that great after all.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 06:39 PM
I'm Damn real.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 06:40 PM
While I don't think that playing cream puffs is all that beneficial, I also don't believe in stacking the front end of the schedule with tough opponents in a short period of time. I vote NO to FSU the first weekend.
Posted by: MiamiMoe | February 07, 2011 at 07:03 PM
If you're for real look at the numbers. Although you may not be intelligent enough to measure performance, numbers don't lie period.
Posted by: mike33076 | February 07, 2011 at 07:17 PM
I'm done with this dual threat quarterback garbage. Does anyone remember what Ken Dorsey was ranked coming out of high school? Maybe recruiting websites didn't exist like they do today. I really think Stephen Morris can can be a good qb and he has a better arm than KD. However, KD had a lot of weapons he could rely on. UM has weapons now they are just unreliable. I think Golden is on the right track. UM can beat a lot of teams with good execution. Go Canes!
Posted by: Justin | February 07, 2011 at 07:37 PM
Numbers do not tell the whole story either. U may not be intelligent enough to comprehend that fact. Are the numbers nice? yes but did U not see time and time again when he was out coached by an offensive coordinator and only had to rely on the teams sheer athletic ability and hope to win on that. When the talent was no longer developed and he actually had to think and scheme to stop someone he failed miserabley. Numbers and stats are like the Star system in recruiting. How many starting QBs are in the NFL right now were 5 star QB's? Not many.
Tell you what if, and that is a big if, he does get hired by Maryland or anyone else for that matter and he puts dominating defenses on the field, then I will say I was wrong. But I can almost guarantee U that he will not do that. I'm a man of my word.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 07:45 PM
Morris could be great. The only thing I wonder about him is does he have it between the ears? We know he has a better arm than Dorsey and is light years more athletic than him, not to mention Morris has a fiery personality that rubs off on the other players. If he has the brains to process the information and reads then he will be as good as his recievers allow him to be. I see alot of upside with Morris.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 07:49 PM
Shannon wouldnt go to an ACC school if was a true cane. He just wants to beat the canes so he can say, "I told you so." He still thinks he shouldnt have been fired. We might win only 6 games this season but at least I can say the team can get better. With shannon, it was a roll of the dice.
Posted by: J | February 07, 2011 at 07:59 PM
Joe Pannunzio has been given an "off the field" position that once his capabilities are fully understood will evolve into a "off the payroll" position...go get'em Joe--do that voodoo you do so well!

Anyone have a definite answer as to why Damien Berry was wearing a VT helmet in the Texas v The Nation game?
Posted by: Traitor? | February 07, 2011 at 08:10 PM
Shannon can want in one hand and crap in the other because thats about as close to beating us as he will ever get. Trust me when I tell U, don't worry about winning six games this coming year because the number of wins will be at least 9 or more. We are done beating ourselves, which is what we did with Shannon. Teams are going to have to beat us to get the win from now on.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 08:16 PM
Because his head is the same size as Andre Smiths' and nobody told him he needed to ship his helmet down ahead of time. The announcers explained it...
Posted by: Eudocimus | February 07, 2011 at 08:53 PM
Guess we won't have to worry about scoring points on Maryland in the future.
Posted by: Canesjunkie | February 07, 2011 at 09:37 PM
Yeah Spencer Whipple could start that game and put up some nice stats.
Posted by: championships is all that matters | February 07, 2011 at 09:41 PM
U know, sometimes the shoe just doesn't fit - so why force it. I like Brissett's attitude of going to a school that has a #1 QB recruit and good luck to him.
Posted by: DaaaU | February 07, 2011 at 10:13 PM
The baseball player / QB is David Thompson, of Westminster Christian, the Miami Herald Athlete of the year. Amazing athlete. He was at Golden's Jr Day.

welcome to the 'U' DT...the future is NOW...
Posted by: odlo jones | February 08, 2011 at 03:21 AM
I really hope Brissett didnt go to UF to follow his friends. Cause that would jus be silly on his part. He had to know Florida recruited Driskel and being the fact he's the #1 quaterback in his recruiting class he has a bit of an advantage as of right now. So im not to sure what his motives were but he'll have to live with his desicion from here on out. Wisconson wouldve been a smarter choice i say. But hey he's his own man and is gonna do what he wants...... Go Canes!
Posted by: CaneFan_88 | February 08, 2011 at 04:31 AM
Thanks Eudocimus! Didn't think Damien would be that kind of freak. Good to see him play well!
Posted by: Traitor? Nope. | February 08, 2011 at 09:37 AM
Brissett is an idiot. Hope I am wrong and he becomes a star...but I doubt it. This is why parents should play a big part in the decision making process...he is a 6-5 teenager making emotional decisions based on friends he'll have on the team. I'm not being a homer here...Wisconsin would have been an equally good choice to Miami, for him!
Posted by: spike | February 08, 2011 at 09:50 AM
I don't care for any of those two transfer QB's. Neither of them have great skills. But, the problem with QB depth will come in 2012. I hope that the coaches remain patient for the right guy and not get pressured into any available guy. The word will get out that the U needs two quality QB's and I am confident that we will sign one of the top QB's in next year's class. Maybe a H.S. and JUCO prospect.
