Canes ink 16 recruits; Brissett watch begins

At 4 p.m. UM coach Al Golden will meet with local reporters to talk about his signing class. You can watch it online at Hurricanesports.com

For all intent and purposes it feels like the Canes are done for today. There is still at least one possible addition out there:

> Encino Crespi (Calif.) receiver Devin Lucien could still end up picking UM when he announces his choice at 6 p.m. EST. But the expectation is he will stay out west at either Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA or Utah.

So, for now, it appears, the next big news will come from Palm Beach Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who will make his announcement on Friday during halftime of his basketball game. Brissett is said to be deciding between UM and Wisconsin.

"I'm hoping he's the last big surprise," said Tampa Alonso defensive end Anthony Chickillo, who signed with the Canes Wednesday. "Jalen Grimble was the one I knew about. I thought there might be a few others. Right now, I've got my fingers crossed for Jacoby."

NEW VIDEO: Coral Gables LB Denzel Perryman spoke with our Andre Fernandez this morning. Here is the interview.

DUBOSE SWITCHES: Northeast defensive end Bryant Dubose said he started having second thoughts the moment he left his official visit from the University of Miami last Sunday. Now we know he probably should have never committed to the Canes in the first place.

Dubose, an All-Broward First Team selection, switched his commitment to Louisville during a ceremony in front of his teammates, coach and mother. He's the first Canes commitment to flee the class. The 6-4, 245-pound recruit, rated the 24th best defensive end in the country by Rivals.com, said he just felt more comfortable with the Cardinals.

"We have a great recruiting class there," Dubose said. "I love the environment there, the coaching staff. I feel like that's where I will be best at in my future."

Dubose still needed to qualify academically at UM. I believe grades definitely played a factor.

THIS MORNING'S NEWS...

Ricardo Williams was so jacked up about signing with the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday he woke up eight minutes before his alarm clock was set to go off at 5:30 a.m.

The 6-6, 218-pound defensive end from Homestead High wanted to be the first player to fax his signed National Letter of Intent in to coach Al Golden. Unfortunately for Williams, who sent his fax through at 7 a.m., here was a slight glitch. He had forgotten to send his financial aid form in along with his signed letter of intent.

"Coach [Micheall] Barrow called and told me I had to resend it," Williams said. "I guess you can say we were a little too excited."

When UM finally received all of his necessary paperwork at 8:20 a.m., Williams was the sixth recruit to become an official new member of Golden's first recruiting class. Melbourne Central Catholic receiver Rashawn Scott was the first to get his letter in at 7:10 a.m.

As of 11 a.m., UM had recognized 14 signees as part of its 2011 class. The others: St. Thomas Aquinas receiver Phillip Dorsett; Coral Gables linebacker Denzel Perryman; Lakeland Kathleen linebacker Gianni Paul; Tampa Alonso defensive end Anthony Chickillo; Dallas, Ga. offensive tackle Taylor Gadbois; Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) linebacker Antonio Kinard; North Atlanta Ga. linebacker Eddie Johnson; South Fort Myers cornerback Dallas Crawford; South Broward running back Kevin Grooms; Las Vegas defensive end Jalen Grimble; West Hills, Calif. kicker Matt Goudis; and Taft, Calif. punter Dalton Botts.

The big surprise for UM: Grimble, a 6-2, 280-pounder from Bishop Gorman who was rated an ESPN Top 150 recruit and a four-star prospect by Rivals.com.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Grimble told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “The coaching staff is great. The school’s in a nice area. The student-to-teacher ratio is 11-to-1. You could go across the country and that’s hard to find.”

The other surprise was Johnson, a player most Canes fans hadn't heard of until Wednesday. A three-star prospect according to ESPNU and Rivals.com, the 6-1, 230-pounder had originally committed to UCF. He had 90 tackles on defense and scored four touchdowns on offense.

THE MISSES
Golden went after several other recruits -- and didn't land them all:
> Jacksonville Ed White offensive tackle Kaleb Johnson opted for Rutgers.
> Lake Butler Union County Lonnie Gosha took a late visit to UM, but opted to stick with his commitment to Arkansas.
> Osbourne (Va.) athlete Dominique Terrell decided to stay home and play at Virginia. He was set to choose between the Canes and West Virginia.
> Inglewood (Calif.) receiver Patrick Onwuasor chose Arizona over Miami, Arizona State, Washington and Hawaii.

kevin grooms lol

I hope Dubose sticks around, but Grimble is a hell of a pickup. This is a solid class already and could turn special if Brissett and Terrell sign. We shall see.

This kid Grimble sure has some serious weight fluctuations. He's 280 lbs according to you, 250 on ESPN's page, 218 on another. Hopefully you're right about the 280 because that makes him a likely D-tackle. If he's 250 and doesn't grow he'll be a DE, and we need tackles in this class because we have lots of ends.

Go Canes!

Is Louisville where everyone goes when they cant read or write? Wow. I thought it was a University.

Rutgers? USF? Virginia? Arkansas? Wow, some of these guys are going for the low friut, being the big man at an easy school rather than challenging themselves to get to the NFL.

Louisville??? What a joke. UM or Louisville. There seems to be something more to this strange story. Dubois might want to talk with Big Alan Baily as why he may have not developed to his fullest potential. The former UM coach he had that is now at Louisville is somewhere in that discussion.

AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE NEW CANES, WELCOME TO THE U FAMILY.

Grimble is our 2nd 5 star on miami.scout.com with Chick. He is 4 star on espn and rivals. SO, NICE STEAL BRENDAN CARROL FROM THE WEST COAST>>.................

Grooms WANTS to play Special Teams! Very refreshing!

"THE CANES ARE BACK, THE CANES ARE BACK!
NOT EVEN IN THE TOP 25 RECRUITING CLASS.

VERY SAD.

This is a ok class. We need a qb though. By us going to a 3 4, we need guys like gimble to play end. Not sure about the west coast wrs. No big surprises. Wish all our recruits the best! Welcome to da U!

NOW I KNOW HOW ALL OF THOSE SMALL SCHOOLS FEEL WHEN THEY SIGN ONE OR TWO SO SO PLAYERS.

CELEBRATION!

VERY SAD.

I wonder why he is switching? Is it due to just wanting to attend Louisville or due to his grades? Either way, good luck to the kid.

Good luck to louisville next year in south florida. Golden will have a full year to get his game on. It's no surprise that Dubose would switch. Manny gave us a head's up on him feeling the "pressure". Enjoy the cold weather and dont wander too far away from Louisville. You'll wind up in a deliverance sequal.

BUT EVERYONE MUST BE VERY PLEASE SINCE

"GROOMS WANTS TO PLAY SPECIAL TEAMS!!!!"

THE CANES ARE BACK!!

VERY SAD

TheTruthHurts this is a solid class. Golden started recruiting in december. just got his whole staff together. judge next class.

I like this recruiting class I really really do. Addressing needs was very important and they did it.

What Champs said. How can a person with any sense really come down on Al when he just started recruiting these guys.

@Truth Hurts--go back to Gator(Felon)Zone or War(Felon)chant or whatever rock you crawled out from under, you effing troll. We don't need your drivel and nonsense in here. When these recruits lead the Canes to a natl. c-ship despite being deemed "3-star" (whatever that means), are U going to show your ugly mug in here, or are you going to go back in the dark w/the rest of the cockroaches?

Good job Canes & Coach Golden, way to make something out of an other wise tough year given all the turmoil. Looking forward to all the new guys showing up on campus and enjoying their time at The U.

Grades are an issue for Dubose. Kid is dumb as a door nail. Its debatable if he even qualifies at Louisville and thats saying something. If you cannot qualify at Louisville you should kill yourself now.

TheTruthHurts is a douche. GTFOH with that nonsense.

What Al Golden is doing with recruiting is impressive. And I think it is a good SIGN. Key word being sign. In all the years of following Miami, recruiting just doesn't give a good enough projection of reallity, so I don't even pay attention anymore. If these guys are reall good recruits I will know it September.

Remember, Shanon's Northwestern ridden class of '06??? Ranked number 1 in the country. I think, has been a bit of a bust, while Buth Davis' class of '97 was not heralded at all but included S.Moss, R.Wayne, D.Morgan, D.Jones, M.Rumph, N. Webster, A.Moser, etc.

Good luck and welcome to NEW 'Canes.

I wish Dubuse good fortunate with Lousiville. Sounds like he didn't have the grades to get in to Miami, F-L-A. Too bad for him.

So, don't sweat it loyal Hurricane rowdies, because Sin City prep baller Grimble is " one " of the steals for Goldens initial 2011 class.

Grimble has mega upside too boot and could become A.C.C. All-Conferenc by the time his career his over at Miami. That's how potential he has over the kid whose going with Lousiville.

Just calling it like I see it. No disrespect towards Dubose and Lousiville. Because, it is what it is. You-all Cane ruffians dig!

5star Magic Benton, it's all about developing incoming H.S. players and Shannon and his departed staff just didn't get the job done!

And believe it or not, Coach Golden and his Hurricane assistants will absolutely develop this incoming class, as well as future freshmen/transfer classes, to be the best they can be!

if 5 star recruits can still go to usc with them being on probation and clemson with their record then they can come to the U as well. maybe the problem is not with al and maybe its hocutt or shalala.

awesome job by golden. this team will be so much better this season just because of coaching. d.terrell was the one that hurts, we needed that guy but he went to virginia

YEAH, YEAH, SAME OLD ANNUAL EXPECTATIONS THAT WILL BECOME SH**.

I BET ALL OF YOU THAT EVEN FIU WILL CONTEND FOR A NC BEFORE UM DOES.

VERY SAD!

Nice shout out to Magic Benton. that guy was the man. big time name. I saw him playing in an arena league game over on the west coast of FL a year or two ago i was surprised he was still going at it.

The class was about as good as could be expected, with the limited time Golden had. To bad Debose bolted, probably a grade issue and probably the same with Watson. Would of loved to had Terrell but it's hard to pry those mama's boys away from home. I figured Gosha & Johnson for sure would be Canes but I guess if you settle for second rate then that's how they'll end up. Our Gain, there loss. We still have some possibilities out West, with Lucien & Onaswoure but those 2 are real iffy. There's still some back burner guys, Cormier, Pompey & Tre Jackson that could sign later, at least one of them anyway. Xavier Grimble may skip out on USC now that we have his Cuz. Last but not Least There's the saga of Brissett. We have 2 chances to get a QB or both, either him and or Savage.

VOS,

yep, if you cannot qualify at Louisville, you should kill yourself. That, or enroll at Gainesville U. What a stinkhole backwater that place is.

The truth hurts. You must have been dropped by your head when yo momma had you. I'll take that bet. On the other hand no. I'll allow you to keep your last 5 bucks so you can buy your last "nickel bag".

I know da u- Wrong again, einstein. The U is staying at a 4-3 basic D. Right out of the DC's mouth. You too have "issues".

Someone explain to me, Manny or someone, anyone:

If FSU was hit with scholie reductions after their last NCAA penalties, how is it that they seem to be signing evryone and anyone? They have 25 commits, and the No.1 class. So much for NCAA penalties for Free Shoes University

I'm excited for everyone who has signed whether they are among the best or not, they could have opted for better programs but chose miami because they want to be hurricanes! and that is what we need at the U

Magic Benton??? Wow - kudos to whomever brought up that name from the past. True Canes fan if you can remember Magic Benton. Of course, we know Coach Erickson cannot remember him as alcohol kills brain cells.

VERY SAD TheTruthHurts has no life and has to repeatedly post the same crap.

VERY SAD...douchebag.

We are going to run into the academic issue a lot, we aren't the same school we were in the 80's early 90's or even the late 90's. Our kids will have to be able to read and right and not have a bad personal issues. Personally I don't want it any other way and real Cane fans should feel the same.

The Truth Hurts' trolling...

I feel the same way

I HAVE VERY LITTLE GOING ON IN MY LIFE..

THEREFORE, I INSTIGATE ARGUMENTS BECAUSE MY COMPUTER ALLOWS ME ANONYMITY WITHOUT IT, I WOULD BE TERRIFIED TO MAKE COMMENTS TO PEOPLE BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WEAK.

BEHIND ME KEYBOARD THOUGH, I AM TOUGH GUY.

I KNOW...I AM VERY SAD.

Welcome to the U! I really like the attitudes of Ricardo Williams and Kevin Grooms. They are very confident, athletically gifted, and love the U. Go CANES!

I will take that bet. Tell us where to mail the money.

Or are you gonna be a coward and back out of it like your team backed out their rivalry with the Canes.

Your real street address or STFU.

Congrats to all my new MIAMI HURRICANES!! Welcome gentlemen. Tired hearing about who's got the best class and all that bull crap. Guys, were the underdogs. People hate us because they respect us. Go play with a chip, and let's get No. 6
CANE 4 LIFE
GO CANES!!

Oh well, peace out and good luck....everybody can't cut it being a Cane on the field and classroom! Go Canes!

The Gator and FSU fans on here are borderline special ed.

The canes should use the same strategy that Pat Riley used to get Lebron. Golden should take Kehoe with his 5 rings on his recruiting trips.

Be a cane or get beaten by a cane.

Buh bye sweet hearts.

remember Clemson, probably the best all around recruiting class. I mean they have Tony Steward (#1 lb), Sammy Watkins ( a beast WR), Mike Bellamy (Florida's NUmber 1 or 2 running back). And this year Da'Quan Bowers will likely be the #1 drafted college player. 1-2 yrs ago, they had the 2 fastest players in cfb: jacoby Ford adn CJ Spiller. Ok,they beat us thanks to Ja-picky Harris, but what did that get them? So... what has that gotten Clemson other than being a perennial pretender?

Point is, these kids UM has are studs. They are football players, and they will play with chips on their shoulders. Golden is starting to lay down the south florida blanket. Nonetheless, kids like Roberson will have a tough time, because of academics. I do not want to have primadonnas. I want real canes and football players to play for the U. No whiners. No cheerleaders.

so we lost out on some top 150 guys, even ones we thought we had. but just take a look at how many top recruits had UM in their final group. I see that as a real positive, especially considering the short amount of time this staff had to recruit. a full year of recruiting will definitely have us back in the top 10 for 2012.

Al Golden and staff have done a remarkable job at saving The U's recruiting class. Sure we lost some early signee's b/c of Randy's firing, but imagine Golden having a full year of recruiting? I mean he has done more in a month and a half than some coaches do in a year. The kids that went to other school's will be kicking themselves in the rear once The Canes' return to the promised land. Golden made all the right hires and bringing back Kehoe was the classiest of class moves! For the first time six years I have a great feeling about this Canes' squad. It reminds me of the JJ and Davis years. Now all we need to do is out it all out on the gridiron boys. Make us Caneheads proud!!!

Louisville seems like a holding cell for under achievers and the illiterate. I'm glad this kid didn't work out. He didn't impress me and isn't worth the scholly. He never should have wasted people's time.

I'm more broken up about Dominique Terrel. I would have loved to see him add a wrinkle to the team.

I hope Golden can coach because like expected he has failed at recruiting. I guess kids are a lot smarter than fans for NOT BUYING KIRBY HOLCUT'S "BIG SPLASH" AL GOLDEN. Player's choose Strong at Louisville with who has rings (UF Def Cord) to show off and a bowl victory in his first year as a head coach and all Al had to show was hot air and a Temple sweater. What a joke of an Administrations.

Welcome to the U new players! It is going to be a GREAT ride and we support your choice! Go Canes

I have a funny feeling that this "medicore" class will outperform the over-hyped Northwestern class.

Man these kids got me ready to go!!! And they want to be here so thats great!!! let's go canes
