« Former Mich. QB Tate Forcier transferring to UM | Main | Canes land '12 commitment from QB Gray Crow »

Will Forcier be a good fit for the Canes?

Tate Forcier agreed to be a Miami Hurricane Wednesday when he put his signature on a financial aid agreement, setting the stage for his transfer from Michigan to Coral Gables later this summer.

Tate_Forcier Forcier won't be eligible to play in 2011. But in 2012, the 6-1, 192-pound quarterback from San Diego is expected to give current sophomore Stephen Morris a fight for the starting job. Will Forcier -- a quarterback who has only run the spread in college and high school -- fit UM's pro style offense?

National recruiting guru Tom Lemming said Forcier definitely can and expects him to be successful. "They obviously needed a quarterback and Tate gives them that," Lemming said.

"But this kid is also a polished veteran of the college football and has always looked pretty good when he's been on the field against good competition to me. He's not real tall, but he has a good arm and can run. He's confident, athletic and you'll be surprised with what a good arm he has. Yes, he's only played in a spread offense before. But he can throw the ball from under center, too. I really like him."

Lemming rated Forcier the ninth best quarterback in the country in 2009 -- two spots ahead of former Rutgers' quarterback Tom Savage, who was also interested in transferring to UM. It's unknown if the Hurricanes still have interest in bringing Savage in, too. But it only makes sense he's helded elsewhere now Forcier that is bound for Coral Gables.

The big question for UM moving forward is if Forcier will be bringing any of his baggage from Michigan down with him. After starting 12 games and playing well as a freshman, Forcier lost his starting job this past season to former Deerfield Beach High star Denard Robinson. A few teammates accused Forcier of not working hard enough in the off-season because he missed voluntary workouts. Forcier ended up playing in eight games a sophomore before being ruled academically ineligible for the Gator Bowl.

Lemming, however, believes Forcier has learned from his issues at Michigan. And his father Mike Forcier said living closer to campus (Forcier was living off campus at Michigan) and being around Al Golden's coaching staff will make a difference.

"Coach Golden has a lot of attributes that we really like," Mike Forcier said. "He came from the [Joe] Paterno coaching staff. Tate originally had Penn State at the top of his list [coming out of high school]. It was them, Michigan, Oregon, Texas A&M. When he took that first trip to Michigan he just saw too much of an opportunity. But we really liked the coaching staff of Paterno, the discipline, structual organization. I think it had a lot to do with why he picked Miami now.

"Golden brings that structure. He wants the players to be players, but he also wants discipline, structure and respect to the program, the school and each player back to each other."

A COUPLE MORE NOTES

> Mike Forcier said even if Palm Beach Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett had opted to sign with the Hurricanes last week, Forcier would have still probably chosen the Hurricanes.

"I think he was coming here no matter what," Mike Forcier said. "He told me he didn't care who they signed. Last time this happened, he was at MIchigan and [Greg] Paulus was talking about coming to Michigan. [Rich] Rodriguez had a prior relationship with Paulus. It looked like it was going to happen. Tate put on his Facebook, he said 'It's fine if he wants to come here and be my backup.' That's part of people misunderstanding Tate's cockiness. He was just confident he was going to beat Paulus out."

> ESPN named former Hurricane defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt the No. 1 recruiter in the country for 2011. Hurtt, who parted ways with UM after the 2009 season, cleaned up in South Florida -- signing Miami Northwestern quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (a former UM commitment) among a group of 10 players from South Florida.

> In case you don't believe following recruiting is for crazy people: Gulliver Prep defensive back AJ Leggett, one of the top local players in 2012, switched his commitment back to UM on Wednesday. Leggett was committed to UM last season before Randy Shannon was fired. Then, he switched to Florida State and is now back with UM. He's not even a senior yet. We'll let you know where he's really, really going on National Signing Day 2012.

-and how tall is last year's Super bowl's-winning quarterback?

Folks, stop looking at this as a replacement or competition for Morris. Not every guy that we grab on February 9th is gonna be a five star, blue chip, ESPN 150 type player.

This guy replaces Spencer overthrow Whipple, which is an upgrade for the team. Fine, even if he doesn't start, he can remind his local high school guys that going out of town is usually the wrong move, and that the U will be a better choice.

If he is just a solid career backup, placeholder with a couple of fake FG TD throws, and a fourth quarter cleanup guy to keep our starter from getting injured late, then he is better than what we have now.

I was just thinking to myself - Forcier is then next Brees and Farve rolled into one!

We should have 10 rings in the next 2.5 years.

Wow, the obsessed troll that steals IDs is still worried about Feral Cat. Eats at his brain, night and day. Poor, sad little troll.

His comments get removed on the Gator sites, can't post as himself on Canes sites, and nobody loves him at home because the replacement of trailer springs gets expensive. LOL!

This is a needed move for next year. If we did not bring in a transfer that could sit the bench and learn the system Morris would have no one to back him up in 2012 that has experience with the sysytem. Its a good move becuase we need a servicable backup in 2012 if Morris gets hurt. Forcier will never start or play. Al Golden is just creating insurance for 2012.

U never now what u have until its gone
From twitter

Damn, I hope this has nothing to do with Al Golden/Randy Shannon.

Come on Storm - we need you. Help us win our 6th!

Some of you are really stupid. He's a college kid that made mistakes. Do you really think that he will play under Golden being a "headcase?" Do you think Golden is stupid? Scout teams practices with good solid and fast quarterbacks are EXACTLY what we need to compete BIG TIME in 2011. This will create a much quicker and reactive defense in preparing for the ACC running quarterbacks. Think Va. Tech, Ga. Tech, fsu, who ran all over us. get smart people, get behind Golden. He has proved already to me that we are going to be a much better, MUCH BETTER Team in 11. Forcier might even grow up. I believe that he really has not seen the speed of what we can bring and that will only make him better. Compared to Marve? Please. he is a much better athlete than that. Besides, he is fast enough to go to the slot if things don't work out. GO CANES!!!!

@Miamimoe & Canefan you guys and other positive fans are hitting alot of things on the head. But with "Forcier" coming on board to play for da "U" is a good thing. I know by next yr he will bulk up to get his arm stronger. And the thing I like about "Forcier" is that he doesn't get nervous when the game is on the line. I saw this kid bring Michigan back from alot of losses. So I say we got something special.

Come on "Tate" work your magic and show these jackasses that u can play ball. @GTR this u are an idiot!!!! Kenny Kelly was a great Qb too bad he wasn't a Cane for long. But overall he was good so u can take him down from that list of urs. And since ur a GTR why didn't u add Jesse Palmer & Doug "The drunk" Johnson on ur list because lord knows they were pure garbage.

Our defense will only get better with a kid of this kind of arm and moxy running the scout team for a year....Whipple is a trooper but is a really poor arm and how well the scout team works against the defense is how well they get prepared each week...this kid can play, despite his size he has a rifle...watch some of the games he played against OSU, MSU and Penn State..he will only help us and turn up the competitition like in the old days...we had three deep with great QBS in the glory days all pushing eachother..it's time to be positive and support the new attitude...too much of the old attitude from the Randy days is still infecting this blog...

I posted yesterday on facebook that I watched on TV, two games that Tate played in his freshman year. I recall thinking at the time he was one of those rare individuals who sees the field right away and in one game brought the team back in the forth quarter to win. He is a gamer and has a good strong arm with very solid accuracy. If he can get his head together academically he will be a fine addition to our football team. Tate, welcome to our 'U'.!!!!

i can't keep my mouth shut any longer! sorry, but i grew up 15min from ND campus in michigan in the 80's so i guess i look at things differently...
1. thank you shannon for setting the tone for academic performance.(i assume it was shannon)
2. thank you golden for bring the fire back.
3. "pissedoffcanefan" to me you sound like a gator fan. The goal should be to have the highest graduation rate and win the national championship!!! If you have to bail players out of jail early saturdays to get to the field on time and have people take tests for players to win a national championship then you didn't win a d@mn thing!!! There is no character and no respect in that. College is where boys should become men, and the type of men you produce is like a mirror. I want it both ways. The performance on the field of the past and the dedication shown in the classroom from recent years.

Most of da "U" fans need to be smacked for being so negative. And some of u fans wonder why we can't get any descent players to play for us. @ A.J Leggett bro thanks for coming back to the "U". The way you look on ur highlights it's a possiblity you might come in and take someone's postion.

Forcier is a much much more impressive QB than Morris. Take a look at Forcier's stats as a freshman, then take a look at Morris's. No comparison, Forcier wins hands down period.

"he said 'It's fine if he wants to come here and be my backup.'"

That's the kind of attitude i want UM's QB to have. It's fine with me. But I hope he can back it up.

Forcier and Morris are the same in my opinion. Neither has proven a thing. Forcier had a great freshman year, but it was obvious in that he didn't put the work in that Robinson had in the off-season at UM last year. I hope Forcier has learned his lesson. Both Forcier and Morris have some talent, but the exciting thing will be to see who wants to the best they can be or just enjoy life in miami. Also, Forcier is not a running qb. He is a qb that can run. He is tough and has heart. He took shots from the big uglys in the big10 like it was his job and never stopped putting his nose in the mix. BUT if you see him in the club down there please tell him to go home and study!!

I gotta' give Golden, Fisch and Caroll the benefit of the doubt on this one.

And, Forcier ran the spread-option adequately at Michigan. But that's what he is, a spread-option QB.

For instance, I saw four of his Michigan games and Tate had difficulty in the pocket ( height anyone. ) and was a better passer when he rolled out from harm's way.

In other words, Tate ain't no pro-style QB. Capice.

And his physical stats are highly MISLEADING. Because, the kid is a legitimate 5-11 and thin as a Locomotive rail. LOL

Moral of this yapping rant. You-all Cane rUffians better hope Golden signs a legitimate prominsing prep QB for the 2012 class.

Because this kid Forcier ain't the one to lead Miami to a national championship game. Let alone a A.C.C. title showdown. Believe me on this, por favor!

Forcier looks like Lee Evans in Something about Mary and MouseHunt and it ain't a very tough look. I'll pass. Let's hope we sign someone good next year.

I dont like a. qb with grade issues..... its a sign of laziness. Hopefully he's a depth builder, but wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't start, he heads to a another campus.

I wish Robinson had come to Miami to play wr. That guy ran 10.4 100m in high school. He's a great college qb but will be a starting wr in the NFL when he gets there. Sorry, off subject. Just dwelling in the past.

Hurt obviously is a great recruiter. Don't take that away from him. He's been seeing some of these kids for 4 or 5 years now. Don't underestimate how important that is when your older friends get sent off. I hope Golden can hold down south Florida. Just don't think that strong and hurt won't get their share. I kno I kno, its Louisville, but kids are not as old as us. They didn't see Michael irvin. They kno Andre Johnson played for the u, but they didn't watch him in college. They only kno about the latest which is tebow, ingram, and newton. That's golden's job to get us there again.

Holy Cow! A white QB! I like the move. The Canes need experience in 2012. We really do not know how good Harris can be with good coaching. I can't believe the Canes renewed Whipple's scholarship! Whipple is not a Div 1 QB. They should have gotten rid of him when his dad was fired!

Great pick-up for the U. Golden and company will turn Tate into a better QB in one season than the U has had in many years. Rated better than the Rutgers guy, great mechanics, compact delivery, very accurate and very mobile. Kid played with a shoulder injury most of you don't even know about....an injury similiar to Tebows that Tate played with while the great Gator set on the bench. He has the swagger some think is so important, is a film watcher like Dorsey and a real leader in the huddle. Tate played during one of the most unstable times in Michigan's football history. Downside, needs the strict attention Golden and staff will provide. Today, he is better than either QB in house and by the time he is ready to hit the field he will be the starter and the dumbos on this web will have to go after someone else.

Yes I agree with the fan who has the balls to say his mind. Yes whitie sounds good to me. Remember Kenny Kelly and Ryan Collins. I bet that most of you don't. Two bums without the balls to stay in the pocket to finish the play. Looking forward to 2012! Gaqinesville cane

Hey guys this kid could be the next Drew Brees if given the chance.

Alot of UM fans with passionate posts but not many football minds here. Going into next year you have one senior who has not lived up to expectations and is int prone. You have one Soph who is unproven and looked a little stiff the last time I saw him play. You didn't pick up a QB in your incoming recruiting class. Do you really think having an experienced back-up is a bad thing? Do you think having position competition is bad? No BCS quality program should go into a season with only 2 QB's especially with the doubts that surround the 2 we have.

Nu'keese Richardson where did this kid end up? For all U guys that want 1qb and 2 true fresh and no Tate into the 2012 season are crazy. Tate has played in big games, there home attendance avg. was 109,000. Just remember how JH has played with no one pushing him for his job. We need are players to compete and not be complacent like JH.

If Forcier found it tough to concentrate on academics in Michigan, how will he do it in Miami? Don't give me the excuse he lived too far from Campus...please...he loved the party scene. Hope he grows up.

We just need a quarterback to manage the offense until 2012.

It's obvious that alot of ya'll don't know jack about football and let your dislikes towards kids cloud your judgement. Many of you are probably older and far less accomplished as many of these kids. I would love for someone to put you resume up and see the comments people who don't know you would make. If Tate had come here in 2009 most of ya'll would have been singing his praises. Kid has an opportunity to show his skills. Lets just wait to judge.

Saw someone say "that's one less scholarship for next year ..." Seriously?! What happens in 2012 if Stephen Morris breaks his arm, heaven forbid?! You want to trot out a true freshman to back him up?! Heck no! If if Forcier's a backup, it's depth! I'd rather have "depth" with a junior who started 12 games at Michigan that depth with a true freshman who's still trying to remember where the student union is on campus.

MbiggMike is right. a lot of non-thinking Football people here. Must be some fators or semaholes or something. Look, I just got done watching the highlights of the 2002 41-16 demolishing of the fators. Magahee run for 180 yards behind the monsters, Winslow made the catches in traffic, Wilfork and the boys on D demolished anything that was throw at them, special teams were playing absolutely nasty, and Dorsey made 8 or 9 good throws, and we played at the swamp. We hit like frieght trains and played as one team. That is what Shannon was never able to do. Player were jumping all over the side lines. Wow! So now, we have a huge line coming back that under Golden will be much more physical and desiplined,, great backs, some possible tight ends that can play, and a bunch of hitting recruits with some great D players, and everyone is so enamoured with a quarteback. We were supposed to have recievers that were all worl the last 3 years! SHEEITE! I look for a very good season a the speed of 01 and 02 on both sides of the ball. Streeter is a player that was not allowed to play... and on and on... Golden is a lot smarter and tougher than most of you know. He was a Penn State diciple. Say what you want and keep worrying about da quarterback. Joe Pa had a few good quarterbacks, but he has had many, many, more great backs, lineman and countless all american defensive players.... and then... here comes Golden to UM! GO CANES!!!!

239Cane,
Right on. Tate Forcier is a winner with huge upside. And so is Stephen Morris. The more, the better! Go Canes!

Morris will not be the starter in 2012, Forcier will. He's had the much more impressive passing numbers by far. He's also been in many more pressure packed games, and was able to bring back UM at least 4 times from deficits in the 4th quarter. Morris will back up Forcier in 2012.

Seriously people, in addition to Forcier I expect Golden to sign at least two top QB prospects next year. And if one of them turns out to be the next Dan Marino, he will try to sign one or two again the next year. Players get hurt, lose their jobs, get buried on the depth chart, get into trouble, flunk out, etc. Randy should have been bringing in two QB's to compete every year and never did. I don't expect Coach Golden to make that mistake.

retun to glory youre an idot

I wonder why Golden wanted Forcier more than Savage? What does he see ?

Swagger and attitude is not baggage....it's what won our 5 titles people....let's keep it real...

Driskel is not the answer! Will Muschamp is a clown. We will never win with this undersized rag arm bum.THIS IS NOT A PROSTYLE QB!!! IF THIS IS WHAT WE GOT CALL MIKE LEACH AND LETS RUN HIS OFFENSE AND PUT UP BIG NUMBERS AND PLAY KNOCKOUT DEFENSE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX4pBvWpVSo&feature=fvw

The kid has the athleticism and tangibles to be great. It also looks like he is a smart player because you can tell by his decison making. I was also impressed with his instincts in the open field and his ability to find open targets. I believe the off the field non-sense will be stopped by Coach Golden, and that this kid will shine. My prediction is that he beats out Morris after the year he sits out, but it will be a pretty close competition. Both have the ability to be great! Go Canes let Coach G. lead the way to our 6th National Title hopefully in a few years!

I've known Coach golden for many years and followed him closely at Temple. I will guarentee that Forcier will not be a problem or a cancer or he will be gone quick. Coach won't let a kid destroy what he's all about. I'm ready to tee it up.

forcier is a gamer but by no means does he see the field. he buys time much like big ben until he can find a receiver rather than reading and picking apart the defence from the pocket.

No Forcier isn't the Holy Grail of quarterbacks, and he isn't a 6'4, 230lbs, with a freakish arm. About any qb can be decent if they can limit mistakes though. And Leach is trash!!!

If he can complete 50% of his passes and throw as many picks as TD's, then he'll fit in just fine ...

No he hasn't grown in the last 2 weeks... but...neither has MVP Superbowl winnering QB's Drew Breeze and Brett Favre.

Tate possesses those kinds of intangables

Jeff Driskel is ... And he reminds me of me .

Does anyone here know why Clint Hurtt was fired?

Horrible move in retrospect, no?

Why can't everyone get off this kid's nuts? The kid didn't have academic issues like flunking out, he missed classes due to being too far from campus and lacking transportation to get there. He is not dumb. He is no more undersized than Morris. And he is also bulkier than that weasel Harris, who needs to beef himself up big time. Sorry, but to me Harris looks like an anorexic athlete. Forcier and Morris have NFL quality potential that can be improved. Harris lacks this. His lack of arm strength and constant forcing of the ball into coverage leaves him undrafted come NFL draft time. 3 years of football and he still can't figure it out shows a lack of progress and lack of smarts. Blame Mr. Whipple's offense all you want, but Harris should know to throw it in the 10th row when the coverage is too tight. Golden made the right decision since next year if either go down to injury, the other can come in and win games. Morris did not have 'flashes' of greatness last year. Not too many Miami QBs can say that they had a 300+ yard game in their first few starts. Forcier will improve the QB depth chart without even having to step foot on the field by pushing Morris.

Forcier seems like another spoiled daddy's boy just like Marve. You see where that got us.

SMH @ everything that you typed after the first sentence. There was no need for you tear JH12 down just to build TF up.

The purpose for bringing Forcier in was to compete with Morris and to make certain that we have depth next year when J12 graduates. Its a great move for why it was done and so late in the process. Kid is still young and could end up starting.

Welcome aboard Will!!

O yeah and ignore some of my more ignorant UM brethren.

why does everyone have to be compared with someone else...'the next Dorsey', 'another Robert Marve', 'the next sean taylor, or ed reed, or ray lewis' they will never be a 'next ....' let these guys build their own legacy geezzz

Tate Forcier will be a major positive for the U. He is a competitor and a gifted athlete. Because he has a father that cares about him and didn't abandon his kids does not make him "another spoiled daddy's boy." Wouldn't you like to have a daddy, Chuck? Maybe you do, but many kids don't have that gift in their lives . The kid is a winner and we will be happy to have him in the program. He is a fierce competitor and we need that big time! Go Canes!
