« Run, Hurricanes, run! -- at first spring scrimmage. | Main | Frank Haith to Missouri -- Pending approval by Missouri Board of Curators »

Jacory, Stephen and their coach, Al, speak...

I'm sending your way the comments I got from quarterbacks Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris, plus what UM football coach Al Golden had to say after the scrimmage.

Here you go.

Jacory Harris  On the scrimmage overall:  "It was very nice. We had a chance to showcase some of the talent we have. Everybody did good. The o-line blocked well, running backss took care of the ball and receivers made some big plays. We wanted to just show the fans and community everything we have in store for them."

Is it motivating to have a crowd like this in Palm Beach County? It’s very motivating. I think they’ve been waiting on this for a while now. I don’t remember the last time we came this far for a practice or anything so it’s good to show some love to the people who support us. We just want to thank them for coming out and supporting us."

What does it do for you as a quarterback to to have options like your three running backs? "It puts a big smile on your face. You go out there, you complete a three-yard pass and then you hand the ball off and they break for 70 yards. It puts a big smile on your face because 1. You don’t have to be on the field too long; 2. You’re going to score quickly...

"We’ve just got to take care of our.. We’ve got to do better in the red zone. Today we didn’t do too well in the red zone, we didn’t take care of business down there. But we’ll get better. We drove up and down the field easily. We just have to take care of the short yardage and red-zone things."

How do you think you did, Jacory?  "It wasn’t… I did good. I did pretty good, but as a team I felt like the guys took care of what I had to do on the field with my teammates, whether I was with the 1s or the 2s. we just went in there and had fun and moved the ball."

What was it like playing in front of a crowd again?  "It is different from a practice. This reminds me of my high school days. This is how our practices used to look in high school. It’s kind of different because now you’ve got the stands involved and now you can actually see how many people are here rather than just people standing on the sideline. It’s always exciting playing in front of a crowd."

Do you want to air it out?  "I’m comfortable with the way coach Fisch is calling plays. Stephen got a chance to hit a shot down the middle of the field to Travis. But we just dinked and dunked things, just took care of business and drove down the field. I feel like this: We’re just going to put it in our playmakers’ hands and let them do the work."

Stephen Morris  Could you have taken a few more shots down field, aired it out more? "Yeah, but it is what it is. Play-calling is play-calling. I just want a high completion ration."

On UM's three talented running backs: "I think that’s the best thing about this offense really. We have so much skill and so much talent especially if you single out the running backs. It puts the defense on their toes. We have shifty Lamar, Storm and even Mike. You’ve seen Mike. He stuck his foot in the ground and got going. He’s a great guy."

How do you think you did in particular?  "Overall I felt like I did OK, but there were a lot of things I was watching film on in the past weeks or so, things I just want to get better at: ball placement, little intangibles with your footwork. Overall I felt like I did good. We have two and a half more weeks to keep going and get better and we have all summer."

And the Palm Beach County Crowd? It was fun with the crowd. The fans came out and they energized us and kept us going and it was just a lot of fun."

On Palm Beach County crowd: "It speaks to what’s out there in terms of this program and what the expectations are and what people want to see from the Miami Hurricanes. A great thanks to all those guys who came out today. It’s a good turnout – you know, it’s a scrimmage. I’m pleased with that and our guys reacted based on that, which is nice."

You’ve opened up 2 practices, and 3 scrimmages, you comfortable with that? " It’s the lesser of two evils at this point. For us we have to get back and get out in the community and make sure we’re out there from an outreach standpoint and most particularly from a community and recruiting standpoint. It doesn’t bother me. there will be obviously time to reel it in in august but right now I want to make sure we’re out and about."

Difference with people watching?  "Today was different. I thought for a first scrimmage not a lot of mental errors. Correct me if I’m wrong but did we have a turnover today? We didn’t have many penalties so that’s pretty good for a first start. Now we don’t understand the tempo and we’re not going to be at the conditioning level that we’re going to be at in August, but we’re making progress, so I thought it was a good start. I told the team, the offense moved the ball, we stalled a couple times in the red zone. Some unforced errors there, some penalties, two sacks that took points off the board. We’ve got to learn from that, but the defense was very good in the red zone and short yardage today. And obviously we got about 50 reps for our 1s and 2s to get them on film and evaluate."

Running game was great today. Your running backs can run and catch. Comment on that versatility? "Again, we have talent there and we have to find ways to get them the ball. We have Jedd, who is really coaching the heck out of them and having the quarterbacks see them and know that they’re part of the progression because they’re easy yards. It’s our job as coaches to put our best players in position to make plays and I think they did that today. and as I said I think to you guys on Thursday, that Michael James is a really good football player. He’s just not a hard-working tough guy that [inaudible]; he’s a good football player, so I’m excited about him."

Observations? "I see it like you see it. I thought we moved the ball well. I thought both quarterbacks made good decisions. Obviously Travis Benjamin did some good things. Clive looks like he’s going to be a factor for us at tight end so that’s exciting.

"On defense I think that Futch is starting to settle in a little bit more. He’s looking better. There’s a whole slew of other guys. I’m watching tape and reserving that and when I visit with you on Tuesday I’ll have a better idea.

Would you like to do this in Palm Beach County again?  "We have to. This is who we are. We’ve got to be out here. We’ve got to do a great job in these three counties. We’re not going to do it this year but maybe it’s here, maybe it’s at a new place -- I don’t know. But we’re going to continue our commitment to the coaches and of course we probably had 75 or 80 Palm Beach County coaches out here before practice, which is great, and you saw them on the sidelines. I keep saying it. We’re South Florida’s team, and we’ve got to get back to being South Florida’s team."

You have some injuries [from before]. Did that hold you back?  "I thought we got a lot done. if a young man gets injured at this point it’s an opportunity for somebody. There are not too many guys I would say.. the guys we think for sure are done for spring we’ve released to you. We’re going to have a better evaluation coming out of this. But again it was crisp. There weren’t a lot of guys carted off. So I think the guys are in shape.. I think [andreu] swasey did a great job with that, he and his staff. In terms of the injuries, we always look at it like, just coach the guys that you have and when those guys come back you’re better off as a team."

It didn’t seem like you aired it out a lot: "We just didn’t want to go back to just.. I want to be able to take shots down the field, and I know Jedd does too. But we just didn’t want to come out and start taking a bunch of shots and now we come out of here and we’re 25 percent with 3 interceptions. We didn’t want to do that so get the quarterback going, get the running backs and tight ends involved. I thought we caught some slants pretty good today. Street caught a good one, Byrd caught a good one. That’s something we didn’t necessarily do a year ago is catch really good slants where it's catch-hit, catch-hit. So I thought they did that. We’ll continue to develop the down-the-field game as spring evolves."

On short passes: "I thought our quarterbacks have done an excellent job buying into that phase of  it. You see it’s a 5-yard catch and an 18-yard run, but it goes in the books as 23. And that’s what our kids have got to learn."

That's it, everyone!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Keep up the good work guys and keep dumping off that ball - it will pay huge dividends down the stretch.

Getting back in the community won't help when FUand FSU are kicking our ass in every measurable way that recruits look at. In their lifetime we have one title and they were in elementary school. Kids don't buy into the hype because they are not biased from seeing success of the past.

I'm far from sold on Golden.

We've had good RB'Sfor a lOng stretch and it has gotten us nowhere. Tell my why thus year will be different. Our plume is big but that doesn't guarantee good. The whole staff is new and there will be growing pains. Plus all of our QB's are straight garbage. Get back to me when we land a real QB not these D-2 chumps we have.

Plume = oline

Dumping off short passes is not going to solve our problems. Please!
Playing well against our own terrible defense doesn'tmean we have turned a corner. We tackled like pansies in El Paso, Hank is gone, Jacory is terrible, Bosher is gone, we have one LB,

Get back to me when we have some damn balance. We will still severely jack a balanced attack. That will hurt us like it always does. Did I mention that Jacory is terrible?

Get a life Gary...

Go Canes!

Gary you're either a troll or just a dumbass, nothing you said justifies explanation.

Awesome stuff, seems like Golden just knows what people want to hear. Talking about the entitlement and bringing back former players in his opening press conference, talking about getting UM back into the community and building relationships with high school coaches.

And especially with the players, he just approaches everything in a positive way - there's no dog house, just an honest competition where you're not going to see the field if you don't put out the effort. And he's not telling the QBs they can't throw deep anymore because they threw too many interceptions, even though that's the case. He's telling them to get the ball to the skill players and let those players get the yards for them.

Just night and day from Shannon, hopefully it makes a difference on game day.

I just want to say this Miami is one of the strongest and popular football programs in the country. I hear all of this good stuff that Coach Golden is saying, but this is the spring
not the fall. I think they should have gotten a coach with higher credentials an more big time experience. He coached at Temple LOL. They
are a division 2 program in basketball and especially football. I'm just saying dont get caught up in this spring hype!!

Urban Meyer's first job was with Bowling Green.

Dear Gary and Dwayne,

If you are true Miami fans, I feel sorry for your wives and children. If your wives have stuck by you count your blessings b/c I sure wouldn't want to live under the weight of that pessimistic perfectionistic scrutiny. Don't be surprised if your kids grow up and need lots of therapy, or booze, to get them through the memory of living with you.

Now, as for Coach Golden, he is playing the hand he has been dealt. And as far as I can tell, this man is making a difference in every area of the program possible -- with the HS coaches/players, current students/faculty, former students, former players, the media, and of course, our current players. Coach Golden is a BEAST!

I want to respond also to some of the comments
Eudocimus and Gary made real quick. First of all Gary I agree with you about Golden I think personally he was a terrible pick. But I disagree with you about Jacory I think he needs
a good QB coach to calm him down at certain times during games and tell him where to go with the ball. I definitely dont think they should go with the drop it off to running back approach. Thats not hurricane footall and hearing that pisses me off. I have been a fan of the U since Jimmy Johnson and Michael Irvin
and that is not the way the Canes play. Big Plays on offense, Dominant Defense that is Cane football. Get this joker out of here (Golden) talking about dumping the ball off like I said LOL. And for Eudocimuus you arent a true Hurricane fan because you dont call your fellow Canes Dumbasses that aint cool man we all got love for the same team.

Here we are, early April, new coaches, new playbook, 1st scrimmage and you losers are already starting to complain. "Oh it's not cane football".... STFU..don't get your panties in a bunch. If it was mid November and we were losing then I would tend to agree with you. But for now lets see how this plays out. Golden is saying and doing all the right things. BTW, if Eudocimuus is not a true cane fan for calling fellow canes dumbasess then you dwayne, are not a true fan for calling Golden a joker. Same thing!

Jacory definitly be back in tru form this year!

Go Coch Golden! Go Canes!

Dwaine are you stupid or what. Temple basketball is no D-2 program. In fact they are one of the best programs in the nation. In football Temple went from a no win team to a 8 and 9 win team. Woody Hayes amd Bo Shembekler were coaches in the Aid America Conference, as was Urban Lier. So please don't open you mouth and confirm your stupidity.

Keep up the good work Canes! There will always be nay sayers and detractors posting on this site....it's a free country but IGNORE THEM!!!

A ball control offense and a strong defense will carry the day for UM. Sure, who wouldn't like to see the downfield passing game work better? But, you have to play to your strengths, and ours are at RB. An underneath passing game makes total sense. Move th ball.

I don't get the bashing of Coach Golden. This guy is the best thing that has happened at UM in years. He is a positive force and will run an effective program in all phases.

If Uncle Luc can get us a stadium, then great.
As long as he keeps the negative away from the team with the clueless thug junk, then be involved.

It is going to be a good year and will only get better! Go Canes!

It is going to be a good year and will only get better! Go Canes!

U were saying in 2003 ?

Lots of UM fans out there, and every fanbase is at least a quarter moron.

But I'm sure that guy was just the Gators troller, nothing he said made any sense. Getting out in the community won't help because the Gators and FSU are beating us in recruiting? A change to a run first offense won't help because we've had good running backs in the past but haven't been successful?

Congratulations on getting me to dignify your nonsense though.

Uncle Luke cannot get us a stadium.

The Canes are Great! UF is really bad!

I really like University of Miami football! Like really a lot! Gators not so much!

gator blow hards are all over the board. Just ignore the diploma mill trolls, they know they are now SEC bottom dwellers.

We are going to win the ACC! Oh yeah you heard it here first!

Thats right, Eudocimus, his comment that recruits wont go to UM because they can't remember their last championsip, but will go to FSU? ha ha ha ha . That shows how much he knows about anything.
Since FSU won its last ch Miami has played in 2 NCS and finished 5th in the BCS another year.

Itll be another 50 years before UF smells another NC.

And for the idiot to say that it isnt Miami football to run the ball? You are a major moron.

Jimmy Johnson, Howard Schnell., Butch Davis and yes, Larry Coker, not only ran first to set up the pass, but passed to rbs quite a bit. Only Dennis Erickson ran a pseudospread, pass-happy offense that chucked the ball downfield a lot.

While Erickson's teams won 2 NCs, the other 3 were won with a prostyle O based on a run heavy philospohy. No accident that Um has put out some of the best rbs in the last 35 yrs:

OJ Anderson Superbowl MVP
Mel Bratton
Zo Highsmith
Cleveland Gary
Steve McGuire
Edgerrin James
NAjeh Davenport
James Jackson

I only agree with the statement that Jacorry harris is horrioble, but I am willing to give him a chance, and I hope the coaches will modulate his propensity to lob it downfield. But I wholeheartedly disagree with the geniuses who are criticizing Golden. Golden has done so much in so little time to change the mentality of this football program without even playing one game. His staff will do well, I feel it, but just in the intangibles he gets my vote. Remember, rocket scientiss, Jimmy Johnson didnt have so-called credentials when he came to Miami, neither did Butch, nor Coker, nor Erickson.

So gary and Dwayne. If you have nothing positive to say, just stay quiet and sit back, grab a bag of tostitos and watch the 6th NC develop.

The Unaborted Wart is onto his 5th former Came Coach alias.

SEC is such garbage. During Carter couldn't qualify at Westlab Elementary but he can at Alabama. There is no depth so low as an SEC school. Criminals and dopes.

Oh, yeah, Gatard trash. How are those budget cuts coming? Bright Futures program? History. Gatard trash will wish they were in the top 100.

"yeah, but our football team be good."

I wish I were on the UM football team. I would be really, really, really good! Really!

It's great for Coach Golden and staff to think outside of the box and go up to Palm Beach county. We have to show these coaches, players and Palm Beach county, that we care about them and their players. The Gators actually consider that Gator Country. They have a sports talk radio station up there (760 AM) that pushes Gator stories before they will even mention anything about the 'Canes. These two issues have to change. The 'Turds, can not believe that they have in roads with the players up there. We have always had good ties to "the muck" (Glades Central and Pahokee), but we need to start getting some of these players that go to Dwyer and other schools. I heard that the Dwyer coach is a former Gator, if that is the case, we need to really get on these kids hard, because we know that the coach will not be pushing our program. Again, this may be paranoia on my part (Nick O'Leary was from Dwyer and he did go to FSU) with the coach, but I never put anything past a Gator.

Jacory is better than Gino.lol

Good luck this year. It is a major improvement to see the short yardage passes back in play cause that will really keep the defense off balance. Safeties won't know to cover the deep ball or leave a line backer to cover a running back.

I am not sold out yet on us being relevant to the rest of the football nation but we are definitely heading in the right direction. How many games could we have won without all the turnovers last year? At least 2 more. Uva and usf. Osu and va tech would have been different meaning more competitive games. Fsu and notre dame... No chance.

Ahahahaha - Frank Haith got HIRED AWAY!!!

Problem's solved from this end.

Please read the whole post before passing judgement on it. Haith left The U for Missouri because it's a better program period. They go to the NCAA consistently, they have great fan support, they have better players, they have better facilities, and are a national recruiting player. Everyone here thinks that student athletes crave a place with a city environment, and South Beach, but that's not entirely true. Most students stay on campus and use campus facilities because students usually don't have money, this includes BB players at The U, and the entertainment facilities on campus are frankly less expensive that going off campus. Enough said. We probably won't get a top tier coach like Smart or or Brad Stevens. We can get someone Seth Greenberg who can recruit, is great with the press, and knows basketball. He also has Miami routes roots. He is one coach that may be able to mobilize the fans to come out.

Just watched a re-run of my favorite show, Swamp People.... They kill Gators, great stuff! lol

good on ya said everything I was thinking, so I am saved from a lot of typing. If kids can't remember 10 years ago to our last title, then they sure can't remember back to Weinke and FSU's last title, which only happened because of our sanctions anyway. But good said all this, so I'll just move on to Jacory.

Jacory has done little to inspire confidence, that's true, but I believe the jury is still out on him. His numbers look remarkably like Dan Marino's up at Pitt. JH is no Marino, that's not the point I'm making, so pipe down in advance. But, when the QB is asked to chuck it down the field every other play to receivers who don't know their routes, bad things are going to happen, and the QB will get blamed for it all. Peyton Manning at Tennessee was a great QB who threw as often to his running backs as to his receivers. If the strength of your team is at RB, and JH is asked to throw to them and the TE a lot and go downfield only at opportune times, then his numbers are going to look really good. Coker's offenses (both as OC and as HC) broke all the UM records and we did it by running the ball first, then throwing to RB's, FB's and TE's second, and then hitting Andre Johnson third when the safeties came up. Remember, Harris' TD and total yardage numbers are very very good. If the new offense plays it a bit safer, those won't go down but the INT's will.

Go Canes!

Great to see Golden doing a good job and its important for recruiting for the kids in Broward and Palm Beach counties to see the Canes.

But let's be brutally honest: the Canes have never been South Florida's team with the South Florida fans. The Canes have always been a Miami thing and the overwhelming majority of the fans have been Dade based. Cross the county line and suddenly 98% of the hats you see are either UF or FSU. Heck, I was in a sporting goods store in Ft. Lauderdale recently and there was a huge UF section of merchandise, a huge section of FSU merchandise and one little shelf of UM merchandise! That tells you everything you need to know.

I hope the UM admin and coaches don't forget who their base of fans is and who is really supporting this team.

some of you people totally missed what al golden said. he never said the type of offense he was going to run was dump it off to the running back type of offense, he is building the confidence of his quarterbacks right now which is what he needs to do. its just spring, he will open the offense up more when he feel they are ready for that. correct me if i am wrong but the patriots won championships with that style of offense. relax people don't get your panties in a bunch. this coaching staff will turn things around in the direction we all expect and want this program to go

Seems simple enough. Where S. Morris or J. Harris go the rest of the "U" will follow. Get good solid QB play out of either of them and the "U" will have a good productive season in 2011. If not then it could be another underchieving year.

Larry- Not true one iota.

Immokalee is 90% cane. 10% seminole. Thats near Naples.

The muck is 80% cane.

Palm Beach is 50-75% Cane. Yes, that is the dividing line but the dividing line extends into the treasure coast of Ft Pierce/ PT St Lucie.

As far as Ft lauderdale/ Broward you are FOS. Broward is mostly cane country. It was back in the day when I grew up there and it still is. Are youkidding me? What galaxy do you hail from?

What you are seeing is, probably some kids that go to college up in Traylorville or at Free Shoes U, but thats it. Golden is right in bringing the U back to the conciusness of Palm beachers.

by the way in yestsrday's Houston Openthat Phil Mickelson won, there was a guy in the crowd sporting the green and orange of Da U. See, we're everywhere, son, we are just biding our time. Like we did between 1994 and 2000.

2003? So what? It is 2011!

You gotta start somewhere!
It is usually now, no?

Let me say this I am a true hurricane fan but unlike some u fellow hurricane fans I am being realistic I want the Canes to win as much as you do this year. Im not saying that Coach Golden is a bad coach. What I am saying is I think a program with history and greatness of the U could have made a better pick. I hope he proves me wrong. But like some of my fellow Canes fans have said FSU and FU are kicking our ass in recruiting. I dont see this guy changing that. We'll see? And for the guy who called me and Gary losers do you watch football. Write something and talk when you know what Hurricane football is all about.

If Temple basketball is D2, then Miami basketball is D3. Just stating facts.

who is the idiot that said Temple basketball is D-2?? lmao they should be banned from blogging until 2015

Im not sold on anything at this point, but if we dont turn the ball over and dont commit retarded penalties we are a MUCH better football team and dont lose stupid games like USF etc.

Dwayne witten is the idiot that said Temple basketball is D-2. He also called Golden a joker (he's not saying golden is a bad coach), and stated that UM football one of the strongest and most popular and therefore should have gotten a bigger name coach. I'm not sure where the guy has been the past few years.

Everything all of you have said is true, but UM is still the best and UF sucks!

First of all what I said about Temple was a joke ,all I was trying to say was their teams havent won anything . I'm a real sports fan and I know that Temple is a D1 program ,I was trying to make a point sarcasticly. So all of you guys that are mad about that and think Im stupid or dumb you need to check yourself. My main Point is I love the U and I want them to win. So yall need to stop getting mad when somebody is speeking the truth. Like I said I hope Coach Golden proves me Wrong!!! But I stand by my Statements.

Sorry Dwayne for hurting your feelings. I understand you love the U...we all do. YOU were the one who made the stupid comment so we don't have to check ourselves, you do. Trying to give yourself cover by saying you were being sarcastic is weak and not exactly standing by them as you put it. We're all hoping that Golden proves you wrong. Complaining about the hire now is stupid and unproductive. We can discuss this in Nov. In the mean time support your team and the coaching staff.

Since u all want to talk about being true cane fans why don't u all bring up stats instead of your personal opinion on coaches. When is the last time um ball has been relevant. Didn't we have fsu's coach at on time he did pretty good this year but I'm sure some of u all didn't like him either. I don't see anyone on here screaming for Morris he has. Been the been worst than cocker. One one and hasn't done anything in omaha since.

DWitten...how can you call yourself a Cane when you referred to us (UM) as "They?"
d2 programs?

Go back to Gator troll-land, OR...if you really ARE a UM supporter, start acting like one.
BTW, I KNOW what Hurricane football is all about. Golden had NO chance to recruit, as he was hired late in the process.
Take a look a UF's recruiting. They ALSO got trounced by FSU, which is having IT'S day. All things will pass, including FSU's temporary ascension.

If you ARE a true UM fan, you'd know there is STILL something special about being a Cane...not only athletically, but the fact we're one of the top 50 universities in the US overall. High school kids know this, and I believe coach Golden can undo the damage that was done by Randy Shannon's "selective' recruiting and player management.

Winning solves everything and right now Golden is trying to win over South Florida fans, coaches, and players but you can only do so much in the spring..What he has done is open up the U to the people which I understand was not done under Shannon..Dwitten check out Temple closely and they may have a first round pick in the NFL draft from Temple!! When was the last time you heard that, Golden and company develop young men and now can recruit better talent..Lets give Golden a shot and lets judge him on the field and in recruiting next year..GO CANES!!

You guys are really funny and I enjoy talking to yall, but I do support my Canes and I always will. The people who are mad are really making me laugh!! Like I said I want to see my Canes win at all costs. I'm not backing down to anything I said. So the joker that said that's weak. Man read the comments again. A real fan keeps it real and does not follow BS Blindly!! And U Can take that to the Bank!! Holla at your boy peace!!

The only thing worse than the canes play on the field the last 5 years is the fanbase itself...maybe we are spoiled by success of the past who knows but 10 years ago i used to be able to go on a cane message board and get quality info about the team...now just fans trashing the team or people arguing and talking junk back and forth like middle school children...yeah we havent had by our standards a good year in about 6 years but damn give golden and company a chance...

Hey Caneinga U R right!! I dont get on this page to be mean or disrespecful to anyone. I just have my opinion just like every other Cane fan does. I might not agree with everybody's take, but I do respect their opinions. And like I said its funny to me. Its like hanging in the bar with your buddies. I hope everybody feels that way. But definetly understand and agree with what u said!!! Go Canes!!
