Fantastic!!
I've been bullying the naysayers (probably trolls) for 2 days now.
Anyone who heard Coach L speak is either dead or a gator troll if they weren't smiling from ear to ear.
Interestingly, I mentioned yesterday my memories as a child in Miami listening to broadcasts from Miami Jai Lai fronton, and hearing the name over and over again "Larranaga!" (pronounced with the tilde over the n)
This is a great man, not just a great coach.
This was MEANT to be, and is an INCREDIBLE hire.
Donna and Shawn are to be commended.

So, why, at his age, would he leave a comfortable situation for a radical move to Miami and the ACC, to a place with the lowest attendance (4,700) in the league?
“I’m crazy,” he said

Because as he said, it's a challenge, wants to coach in the ACC, involved with an excellent academic and research institution and with roots from Key West, he wanted to come home. That's not radical, but sensible reasons!

Booooooooooring. The Pig needs new material.

After 4 years of sub .500 ACC Conf. records all he'll need is a pair of black sox, white loafers and cab fare to a Collins Ave. porch and he'll be all set.

I'll preface this by saying I think UM should drop the basketball team and bring back the mens soccer team so we have some kickers to poach. I don't like college basketball and I don't see how anyone who's seen an NBA game could find it entertaining, those kids don't play "defensive, fundamental" basketball, they just suck compared to the elite players that make it to the most competitive league in the world.
I'm a UM alumni and a huge fan of UM football, but in a very general sense I support UM athletics. I don't go to the swim meets, I don't go to the baseball games, but I do wish them the best.
We'll never be a competitive program in basketball in the ACC. Never. We can't compete with Duke or UNC for the one-and-done superstars and we'll never have the support of Miami fans (some of the worst in the country) unless we win an ACC championship or better.
But I like this hire. I don't want someone like Bruce Perl who would try to amp up the fanbase for successes that will never happen, I don't want someone like Frank Martin who would try every dirty trick he knows to futilely try to be competitive with recruiting.
I want someone who knows UM basketball's place. I was fine with Frank Haith because he put a respectable product on the court that wouldn't necessarily finish at the bottom of the ACC every year and let the majority of UM fans who only care about football forget that we had a basketball team.
I think this guy is perfect. Coming from a small school, he knows that the only hope he has of making noise in the tournament is to put out a well coached product with 4/5 seniors in the starting lineup every single year and just hope that he catches the powers that be on an off year.
If that happens, I, along with the multitudes of terrible Miami fans, will go to the Bank United Center, probably for the first time since the Dalai Lama or Bill Clinton or someone was there.

college basektball is fun to watch in march when the games actually matter. Same as nba until playoffs the nba is boring also. That said laranage is the kind of coach who can do for basketball what scnellenberger did for football at miami. Hes a good enought coach to build a foundation of winning to build on when he does retire. So this is a great hire for miami. And they are never gonna drop the second biggest money generating sport while playing in a basektball conference.

Every cane fan get of the biased c*** blowing and open your eyes, Larranaga is a bum and watch Miami will not give him breathing room to find mediocre high school kids, Larranaga can't recruit. Mason was full of future Starbucks and local boutique employees.
WAKE UP CANES, YOU GUYS TOOK A HUGE STEP BACKWARDS AND WILL NOW SUFFER AGAINST THE NOLES, BLUE DEVILS, TARHEELS, HECK EVEN THE WOLFPACK AND THE YELLOW JACKETS.
Posted by: observer | April 23, 2011 at 05:20 PM
Lets start with it was george mason. Im sorry but the best kids in his area perfer to go to duke, north carolina and the like. Hell if we hired stevens to butler coach ud be yelling the same thing. sure mid majors dont get the top 5 nba talent but they win against better talented teams. This shows how good a coach he really is. Get some perspective recruting at miami as opposed to george mason is a difrent beast even haith can get good kids because he had an acc school to recruit to. Laranage will do good and i think keep some in state guys that haith didnt even recruit. that turned into stars at other schools.
Posted by: mainecane | April 23, 2011 at 06:00 PM
Nope Brad Stevens is a basketball genius, so is Anthony Grant, Steve Fisher, Dave Rose, Gary Waters (outstanding recruiter, Jim Ferry, Blaine Taylor, and Shaka Smart, just to name a few. Look no one cared about Larranaga even after Mason's lucky Final Four run. I know the northern VA area extremely well, and to just say that the local kids only go to Duke and Carolina is plain ignorant, (especially because Duke mostly recruits out of private schools)most of the kids that go to schools around Northern VA, laugh at Mason.
Posted by: observer | April 23, 2011 at 10:28 PM
Also just saying that an ACC coach could land the best talent shows that you have been in the sun too long because a lot of the mid majors have landed top kids, George Washington, Richmond, VCU, ODU, Northern Iowa, Wichita State heck look at the Ivy League with Princeton and Harvard, look at Cleveland State and even Long Island. Coaches that know how to recruit from small conferences and no exposure... I wonder what your excuse will be now? Don't blame Haith for doing the best he can at a FOOTBALL school.

mainecane - again, I'm down with this hire, I think the guy is perfect. But whatever you think the recruiting advantage is that Miami has over George Mason, multiply that by 10 in your head and that's what schools like Duke, UNC, or Kansas have over UM.
To do what Schnellenberger did for UM this guy would have to win a national championship. I think one of the biggest problems UM basketball has is that general Miami sports fans are looking UM to become competitive at that level, and so they're perennially disappointed to the point where they'd rather not follow at all.
I think this guy can put together teams that are fundamentally sound and that gives them a chance to have fluke years where they make noise in the ACC tournament or win a game or two in March. And that fundamental style is always easier to support in the long term than teams that lose games with bad play.

On a completely different note- some inside scoop on a couple of players:
Dallas Crawford of Fort Myers has posted that he hasn't heard peep from Miami coaches in months!
Jordan Diggs (c/o 2012) is being sought after badly by Ohio State, tennesee, Auburn, UScar, UCF, Maryland and others. he was selected to play in the Army all star game. Why is UM not pursuing him? Kid's a baller! And believe me he has swag. Don't let that swag go north!!!!!!!!

What does that even mean? For someone who spends so much time reading UM blogs you could at least put a little effort into your trash talk, otherwise it's kinda a complete waste of time.
U know?

But seriously- The NCAA gavel is about to come down on that slimey shadey, corrupt coach and program. That b-tard (and the school) knew very well that Clarett was inelgible. And now he is being investigated for knowingly withholding incriminating information regarding his star QB and rb without whom they may have not won 8 games last year!
buh bye sweater vest. Probably will not see your weenie a55 on the OSU sidelines ever again!

Noles vs. your number 16 Canes for all the ACC marbles and state dominance this weekend at A Rod Park. Let's Go Canes!
Got to admit, I was down on this young team earlier this year, but these boys are growing up before our eyes and Morris is doing another phenomenal coaching job. He keeps this up- coach of the year candidate? What say you oink?
Posted by: canesrule21 'ships | April 26, 2011 at 09:32 AM
I would agree with canesrule. I was down tremendously and agreed with some calling for Ol' Morris' head, but it looks like they are finding their mojo. If they limit dumb mistakes, they have the guns and the pitching.

UM has had far superior teams, having won many national championships in football and baseball. That means that there is more to write about. Far more fans, moreover, go to Hurricane games. The followers of the Hurricane blog at MiamiHerald.com outnumber those following the Golden Panthers one by about 10-1, sports editor Jorge Rojas says.
There is, in other words, much more readership demand for coverage of the Hurricanes than of the Golden Panthers.

Why are we even arguing this again?
Did some FIU fans begin babbling their mouths? Comparing FIU and UM in anything is like comparing a Lamborghini with a Jetta. Please. Stop. Win something before you whine. If FIU actually won anything, then ok.

Dude, I am a die-hard Cane but am happy to have another D-1 (I cam still use that term, right?) program in town. There are only a few large cities with two D-1 football programs so I say keep it up.
And really, FIU coverage bothers you? If/when they win some titles, we can discuss whether um-FIU is a "rivalry." Till then,
be indifferent about it.
