Fifth-ranked Canes meet top-ranked Gators today in NCAAs

The University of Miami's highest-ranked team takes on the Florida Gators at 3 p.m. today (Eastern time) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA women's tennis tournament in Stanford, Calif.

The Canes are seeded seventh in the NCAA tourney. The Gators are seeded No. 2 (host Stanford is No. 1).

The Gators (28-1) are a women's tennis power, making their 29th appearance in the 30-year history of the NCAA Championships. They won national team titles in 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2003 and have advanced to at minimum the NCAA semis 19 times in the past 23 years.

Last year, the Gators beat the Canes 4-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Canes (21-6) lost to the Gators 4-1 on Feb. 18. But that was early in the season and only top Canes Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein were playing in the same positions they are now. ACC Player of the Year Eichkorn lost a rare match Saturday to MIchigan's eighth-ranked Denise Muresan. Today, Eichkorn will face seventh-ranked Allie Will, who beat Eichkorn in three sets when they last played.
