UM football transfer update

Canes fans, I just received this email from the University of Miami football office. So, obviously, it's official:

"As of Friday, Travis Williams, Kevin Nelson, Devont’a Davis and Jamal Reid have informed the UM football program that they intend to transfer to a new institution.  Al Golden and his staff will do everything they can to make sure the players land at another institution with a  full scholarship.

No other players – including Storm Johnson -- have told UM that they intend to transfer at this time."

wow

Good luck gentlemen but the next football player to leave the []_[] and go on to do big things will be the first ever. Be the exception.

[]_[] GO CANES []_[]

There was a lot of "dead-skin" in that program. It is giid to clean the house. I guess it is spring cleaning. That will free up more scholarships for a coach who is a great recruiter!! I like that.

That's what players do if they can't handle the heat (competition)...they get out of the kitchen.

From what I've heard...these players were lazy in the film room and slow in adjusting to the new systems.

well...i mean you can expect some of that. understand, you have an entirely new coaching staff, save for barrow and swasey. the new staff isn't always going to be tied to the old players, plus the players that are on the depth chart have the opportunity to show the new and unbiased staff that they should be playing. nelson seemed to be an issue from the start. he was 20 years old and a freshman...and he wasn't coming from minor league baseball like a kenny kelly or andre king, or like watkins from baylor who was a fire fighter before deciding to play college ball. he never saw the field and even when given an opportunity to impress new coaches, he did nothing with it...

¡Sola vaya!

If U want to pass blame, don't put Barrow's name in it. if U know anything about Barrow, going back to his days in Homestead and then the Giants, he knows what he's doing.

Now, then, let's talk discipline, which U have little of right now. RS wasn't big on player development, but his players graduated and they had discipline. 'Goldy is still trying to find himself, and he's doing so among the best talent anywhere.

Daggummit, U listen to me: Bring back RS in a consultation role. The U go find Soldinger. U want to return to the good 'ole days, then start showing it.

Fact is, U can tell a lot about a team the way it "looks." Think about it. U don't look good right now.

Golden does not have discipline issues. Shannon had suspensions for the first game every year (remember Marve?), and transfers out of the program every year as well. It sure seems, however, like Shannon's last class was a troublesome one. Most of the offseason problems and transfers have come from there (save Buchanan, who ended up handling his business for his mistake). Seems he brought in a few troublemakers, perhaps because he was having trouble filling out that class. Who knows.

None of these guys are all that important. If Storm transfers, that would be a real issue, but Golden his going to have to make this team truly his before he can move forward and he shouldn't let a win or two next year get in the way of weeding out the players who don't buy into his system.

Go Canes!

I think it's good that there is some attrition each year. What you want are players who give 100% all the time and don't have an ego that demands playing time if they are not working hard enough to earn it. It' sure they are good guys. Hopefully they can find a place somewhere where the athletic or academic demands are not as great as at "the U".. No dishonor is that. Jax State, Valdosta St., Fla A & M and Western Carolina need players too.

'Cool 'Cat - Nobody blamed Barrow for anything?

But anyway, what's the point of keeping players on the field if you can't win games with them?

It's going to take a lot of winning for UM fans to get over the failure of Randy Shannon's tenure, until that happens there's no way UM could bring him back in any capacity because of the negative reaction that would come with it. It's the risk he took by taking the top job.

Is any of this Barrow's fault? I don't think so. These kids want out, let them out.

Barrow knows how to recruit, but he doesn't convince me as a coach. Our LB's have been consistently horrible for the past 3 years. Sean Spence is as good as he was in high school.

Golden is the coach now, it's his problem to deal with as he sees fit. Maybe he wants these guys off of the team. Expect Golden to handle it, there's no need to bring Randy Shannon back.

Here is an interesting question, can you guys live with these types of issues if we start winning?

I can. I know it's wrong, but I'll live with it if we get some BCS bowl games.

Before you start in on me....yes, I played football. Yes I graduated from UM. Yes I've gone to games.

I don't think you can afford to have players who are in trouble. Look at Ohio State, Florida, and the tumble to took, or will take because players didn't do what they should have done. Suspensions, and transfers cause disruption to a program. At Ohio State, they'll have 5 second stringers stating for at least 5 games. Not a good thing. In addition they'll have scholarships taken away.

What types of issues? These kids are transferring because of playing time, not discipline...

If they dont want to play for the U let them leave.

Why in god's name would the U ever think about bringing Shannon back as a consultant. What does that loser have to offer? Thats right nothing but how to lose games.

Personally I can. Look no matter what college you go to whether it be Harvard or Florida, that is the highest of the high and lowest of the low, college students are going to make mistakes, get into some trouble and do some dumb things. Thats just a fact. Winning cures all things.

I think all of U, respectively, are missing the point. U see, all of this started with Nix. RS was strapped in a lot of ways because U did not want to pay for the creme of the crop. then U brought in that disaster DC and OC. They talked a good game, but...U think about it: Whipple on the surface was excellent, but in game situations, I don't think so.

Point: U had talent galore then and U have it now. If U think what's happening now is bad....

CanesJunkie: Do U agree that RS was a good and respected disciplinarian? Four arrests in two frickin' months...then why not give him some kind of office compliance gig? are U aware of what's going on with U football?

What is going on is simple, the kids were under strict control under Shannon, he was a bad coach, but in discipline he was strict. All of a sudden these kids lose their authoritarian control. They break out, Golden is now taking control.

For a short time there between one losing control and one taking full control the kids break out. Allot like kids on the last day of school.

The rape, well that is a different matter, but out of every group there is a bad apple.

Oh no, he wasn't strapped with Nix, he wanted to hire Nix because Shannon never could stop his offense and always gave him trouble which were his own words. Which disaster DC are you speaking of? I do agree that Whipple is great at drawing up plays but in the game his offenses rarely get into a rhythem with a run pass combination. And what is happening now is not a bad thing. You have to trim the dead weight in order to have a top notch team.

championships - why bring him back? Just because he's a UM guy and it's good to bring UM guys back.

'Cool 'Cat - I told you why they can't give him any kind of job, his failure was just too colossal. Also, there's the kid that got drunk at Fat Tuesdays and the kid that's in trouble for allegedly raping a girl - what are the other two arrests you're talking about? A bunch of kids are in trouble with Golden for smoking pot but I can tell you first hand that players were smoking pot in one of the fraternity houses (the one with video game wiring connecting all the rooms for Madden tournaments) under Shannon.

It's us against the world again...i heard a spot on the radio the other day about what is going on down at UM and they made it sound 10 times worse than what it is, but the gators and other schools have 20- 30+ arrests and no mention. Let's play ball with a chip on our shoulder. See you there. 'CANE 'TIL I DIE!!!

Eudo, I agree that its good to bring UM guys back, but not when the person is the prior head coach who was fired. That would be a problem just waiting to happen.

What sometimes appears to be a negative can turn out to be a positive. That said, these transfers don't amount to all that much in terms of losses. I suspect they are kids who are not with the program. They may not have the character that the coaches are seeking.

So, move on. No big loss. Coach Golden is and will be enough of a disciplinarian. He will demand maximum output from his players. He will recruit those qualities.

So, agree with many writers here who see these transfers as essentially dumping some of the dead weight and attitude cases. Such players can bring down the level of determination in a program and will not be missed.

I agree Shannon installed good off-the-field discipline. But, I don't think we can bring him back in any capacity. It isn't like he's a coach who retired and wants to come back and help out. Randy Shannon was fired because we weren't winning. He failed, he has to take the fall.

You can't make a program by piecing together a few head coaches based on their strengths. There can only be one chief and it's Golden.

Creative idea though, but I'd rather have on-field discipline and wins.

No you dont bring RS back, thats only if u want to lose 8games next year. As for the player that have to transfer, thats good for the program. spring pratice is over,so now Al knows who can not get the job done . Let them go and bring in some other new players. Other players just can not handle the freedom, and once they are identified they will be on the bench or gone.......go canes

Only a crack head would say "Bring back RS"...these thugs are RS's thugs. You are telling me the good boys have gone bad in one semester? This was a bad team last year. They lost 6 games and they imploded in a bowl game. Dumping these players is the best thing to do. Ramon Buchanon should have been the 1st dump. Nelson has always sounded like a head-case, good riddance.

2 first round picks, acc champs, title contender year one. #1 recruiting class year two....

305IVE WE NEVER WON AN ACC CHAMPIONSHIP. TITLE CONTENDERS WITH ANOTHER COACHES PLAYERS, AND YOUR #1 RATED RECRUITING CLASS SET BACK THE UM PROGRAM DRASTICALLY. THAT RECRUITING CLASS HAS FAILED TO PRODUCE ANYTHING WE AS FANS CAN GRAB ONTO AND SAY WITH ANY CERTAINTY, "WE'RE BACK!!!" QUIT BEING A SHANNON APOLOGIST AND REALIZE THAT HE IS A DC AND NOTHING ELSE. THAT'S WHY NO ONE IS BEATING DOWN HIS DOOR FOR A HEAD COACHING POSITION!!! FOR GOD'S SAKE GET OFF OF RANDY'S BAND WAGON. IT WENT OFF A CLIFF DURING HIS SECOND YEAR, AND JUST KEPT DETEORATING UNTIL THE POWERS THAT BE FINALLY SAW IT IN THE ABYSS THAT IT WAS, AND MADE THE CHANGE. ANY ONE WHO SEES IT DIFFERENTLY IS EITHER WEARING BLINDERS, OR HAVE FALLEN INTO THE OLD CONSPIRACY THEORY PSYCHO BABBLE!!! WAKE UP!!!

IF YOU GUYS CAN REMEMBER AFTER THE SUN BOWL CB R HILL SAID THE NEW COACHING STAFF NEED TO CLEAN HOUSE THATS BECAUSE THERE WAS ALOT OF BAD SEEDS HE WAS RIGHT ON POINT...GOOD JOB AG.

Bring Back RS? My G_d, some fans are so clueless. You were probably one of the guys clamoring for Jimmy Johnson to coach this team after Randy got canned. You need to get your head out of the 1980's and join the rest of us in the 21st Century. What coach Golden is trying to do here is bring back the work ethic that was sorely lacking from RS/Coker lead teams. He is bringing back the hell like practices and actual real weight/nutrition training. These kids were getting weaker with every passing year here because RS did not implement strict workout guidelines. The ignoramuses can blame Swasey for that but anyone in the know knows for a fact all of that comes from the TOP (Shannon). When you have pros coming back for Swasey's regimen in the summer at the crappiest facilities known to man, you know the weak college kids being produced were RS' fault. Their poor conditioning and lack of leadership/unity from within was why this team stunk over the last few years.

DiMare noted the players reportedly in trouble “aren’t Al’s kids. All those kids are Randy’s kids. You get bad apples in a box.” DiMare also cautioned that Brown hasn’t been convicted.

“There are minor things that are going to happen in a school with 300 athletes,” DiMare said. “You shouldn’t be thrown off the team for minor things. Obviously, rape is a different story.”

WHAT AN IDIOT UM DISTANCE YOUSELF FROM THIS CLOWN NOW!!!!!!!

everyone here should remember that transfers happen every year on every college team, we have a bunch coming this summer which are far more significant than the outgoing ones. another thing canesfans just have faith in the new coaching staff, this is a staff that took 2 players that werent even offered by another college program and turned them into top 55 picks (muhammad wilkerson and jaiquan jarret) da U had 1,( franklin).once they apply the same work ethics with the top 10 elite talent we bring to the U evey year we will be contenders again

Except for Travis Williams, who I think would of been an excellent LB, none of the other guys matter. Shannon brought in a lot of reaches with the 2010 class and in the end maybe 12 of those 30 will end up being pretty good players. nine have either left the program or never made it here. Golden saved what he could for the 2011 class, so you can look for 2012 & 2013 to be so-so. Golden must hit the jack-pot with the 2012 class. We are blade thin at CB & DL, and not much better at LB, as far as playing time.

Some of these comments I just read would get side splitting laughs on Letterman. It must be amusing to those who know what is going on to read all this stuff. So many experts and so few positions at the U to fill. What a tragedy! What's Donna to do?

Not saying I know, but what I do know is that most of this is void of any worthwhile substance. LOL

The weeding out process is well on the way. Players with QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER or those who cannot compete at this level will move on to what could be a career booster in another program. GOOD LUCK to the young men.

Bring RS back, great idea.
