Canes having recruiting success with coach Al Golden's summer camps

Larry Hope didn't know what to expect when he went to Al Golden's football camp on May 29.

Larry Hope The 5-11, 170-pound cornerback from American High in Miami had heard the University of Miami's new football coach had a reputation for working his players hard. But how hard could a one day summer camp really be? Hope, who has 15 offers (Nebraska, Louisville, West Virginia and Wisconsin among them), found out it was more demanding than any other camp he'd been to.

"Man, I was real tired afterward," Hope said. "I've been to Duke's camp, the Nike SPARQ camps, speed camps, 7-on-7 Badger camps, the National Underclassman, I don't think I worked as hard as I did at UM.

"It was good too because it was different. This was the first camp where you started playing on the other side of the ball. Offensive guys played defense. Defensive guys played offense. I guess they wanted to see your coordination, your athleticism and overall ability. Then, we played defense, did one-on-one, did a bunch of drills. We worked hard, tested ourselves. We found out how we performed when we are tired and if we could overcome the tiredness.

"I'm glad I went to the camp. I learned Coach Golden is a good guy. He's trying to get everything organized, trying to get it back to the old UM. He's more accessible to everybody than any other coach I've been around. He teaches DBs, offensive line, receivers. He doesn't just teach one thing. It's good to know your coach just isn't some coordinator, but somebody who really knows football."

Hope came away impressed and so did Golden, who offered Hope a scholarship before he left the camp. A few days later, Hope said he called Golden back and told him he was committing. Hope said they've spoken everyday since, relaying messages to each other on Facebook.

"Like Coach Golden said for $55, I got a $250,000 scholarship," Hope said. "That's a pretty sweet deal."

Hope hasn't been the only high school player to commit to the Hurricanes after attending the coach's camp. UM landed ESPN Top 150 quarterback Preston Dewey (Austin, Tex.) and most recently 6-5, 235-pound defensive end Jake O'Donnell (Doylestown, Penn.) after they camped.

The Hurricanes now have 13 commitments as part of their 2012 signing class. More could be on the way. Golden has four more camps scheduled: Saturday, Sunday and June 18 and June 15.

Golden announced on twitter that he's expected former Hurricanes Bryant McKinnie, Brett Romberg and Andre Johnson to be at the camp this weekend. Hope said former receiver Leonard Hankerson and a whole host of current Hurricanes were at his camp on May 29.

"It's definitely good to see the former players and current players out there," Hope said. "It makes it feel like a real family."

It's always easy to take shots at what Randy Shannon did when he ran the show at UM. But in this case, it's obvious Golden has made some smart decisions and changes to the camp structure at UM. For starters, his camps are cheaper ($55) and they're spread out over various weekends.

Randy Shannon's football camp, which cost $130 for one-day participants and $390 for overnight campers, took place over just one weekend in June.

According to UM's sports information department, over 600 middle and high school athletes have participated in Golden's first two camps. For more information on the camps, visit www.algolden.com.

Yet another reason why I am psyched about the Golden Al Era. Keep'em coming Coach!

Not only are these camps paying dividends now for the university and the kids, but they're going to end up paying dividends far into the future. Kids won't forget their experiences at these camps and way down the road some young Andre Johnson, Ray Lewis, or Ed Reed clones are going to commit to this university based on a camp they attended years earlier. Bank on it.

Golden is doing everything for the U right now
As of now best hire of the 2011 year

Today's top tear coaches need GM skills to succeed, Golden has those just like Johnson and Davis before him, Shannon is a good man, bleeds orange & green, his strength is as a defensive coordinator.

Go CANES, breathe some life back into the communities that got the CANES To the "GOLDEN" era once.

Good to hear and see the positive vibes coming from down South, being planted in Cali. and with the NFL BS hanging over us this is all good.

LETS GO CANES!

Hey Rob O: U are right, RS is a VERY good DC. But, let's not forget, the season hasn't started yet. I hope nobody's hoping 'Goldy is going ti go undefeated, because he won't.

Still, for every player we get, we lose one. That seems odd.

Excellent.

ESPN has UM's 2012 recruiting class 8th so far. That's a huge leap over last year.

Two years and gone does not make an era...

Maybe Gruden will be available in 2013 ?

.

11-1 ... See U in Omaha

There U dopes go again talking and dreaming about the next ...

U ain't got no money to bet with.

It sounds good.

But it always sounds good in June.

What idiot would counter the positives Golden has in a few months done for the program! With improved dedication and conditioning alone we could have won 9 games last year. So why is 10 wins unrealistic? Because the program wasn't exactly void of quality players, combined with all the overall improvements in financial commitment, coaches, recruiting and conditioning, we will no doubt be much improved. "Only an idiot and say IDIOT", would not expect the CANES to be much improved.

Just the beginning!

This is all good. Let's GO CANES!!!

Fire Morris.com wants to give Golden kudos for having the #8 class on ESPN which is great but wants to fire Morris who had the #3 class last year? and who continues to recruit and develop talent the major leagues always want, go figa!

Can't wait. The Golden Era is here.

The "Golden Era."

Hang u hat on stupid cliches cane clucks

This is awesome. Definitely putting that fence up by having multiple camps. It's cheaper so more families can afford it too.

Much, MUCH more improvement on the exposure front.

Oh, and what's that? We lead FSpoo and UFlukes on ESPN in recruiting? No way!

And they're still trying to catch us, and still haven't even though we've been down since 2004. Ha ha. They suck!!!

GO CANES!!!

all these changes are all positive, players keep coming and coming from all over the country. as far as guys leaving, this happens at every school in the nation, if they think they cannot play here they leave, that is the only reason , they are in sold out stadiums , on tv every weekend and another 8 guys were drafted not including coop and berry who will be on rosters.Lets just get better . remember that this team was the acc leader in total offense and moved the ball up and down the field against every one , we just gave it back on ints and falst starts on orlando franklin

Makes you wonder if he is weeding out the slackers and lackers to free up some scholarships to use on talent he deems suited for his coaching style. If so, I believe it's a good idea. There has been a good amount of chatter about bad attitudes and players assuming they would play because they were stars on their high school team. I say make them earn it. I know he hasn't coached a game yet, but I'm loving Golden from what I've seen so far! []_[]

Hang u hat on stupid cliches cane clucks?

WTF? Really? I am always amazed to see all the moronic canes haters on a blog that was meant for real canes fans. Nothing better else to do, I guess. Anyways, it is nice to see we are getting some good recruits earlier this year. At this time last year, I think Randy had maybe four or five guys.

Looking good, though I would feel even better if I know the quality of the commits. How many 4 stars and 3s? Any 5? The latest commit O'Donnell does not appear to be highly recruited. Butch Davis is a great recruiter because he knows how to grab the gems and dig up the sleepers (both in UM and in UNC). I hope Golden does too, otherwise he may just be using up scholarships and clogging up the roster with weaklings.

And the posters who are throwing Golden's recruiting success in the face of FSU and UF should know that those two schools are doing even better bringing in big time recruits (FSU may have the #1 class in the nation). So let's be humble - at least until we win lots of games on the field.

I know, I know, I should have more faith. ACC Champs this year and back to the Orange Bowl. Go Canes!

Read a few notes on the summer camps that the football coach and staff put together. I really like the good news that is forth comming from these camps. Like someone posted earlier. Not onlyu do we get a good look at HS players now but a real good plan at the middle school kids sho have a dream of playing at the college level. I hope the good Lord allows me the oppertunity to attend one of these summer camps with my grandson. Also like the realization of a promising up and comming player. For the fee of $55. I now recieved an offer to obtain a great education. All I have to do as a player is keep my grades up, my head in the game, my nose clean and in 3 years I just might make it to the NFL.

I hope you and your grandson do get that opportunity Wayne!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......C-A-N-E-S CANES!

Golden is the she-it.

Golden is the man. I said back after they canned Shannon that he and Brady Hoke were two guys that we should target and thank god they hired Golden. Everything is better from recruiting, to conditioning, to the overall well being of the program, under Goldens direction. We will be back on top in no time.

Coach Golden is a winner.

He works kids hard AND can connect as a human being, AND he is a sharp football guy. AND he is a builder of character in young men.

We are fortunate to have him. I believe he was/is the best choice for our head coach.

Now let's transfer it to the field!

Go Canes!

seriously, a kid or two stretching out at Camp has U all frothed below Ur bottom lip ?

Venetian Pool ?

yeah, U sign them early "commits" ...

8-4 ... outside looking in once again .

but , Al is the ... ? ... wat ?

see U in '13

We should just hold onto all the talk, like a Fidel Castro speech that has gone into the fourth hour and still no results leaving people scratching their heads yet standing in lockstep, until we get out on the field where the men of character that he is supposedly building can prove their mettle in some fashion other than being Internet heroes without ever having donned helmet pads. We are what we are.

Jake O'Donnell is the real deal. According to the coaches no one could contain him at the camp. By the way he had an offer from North Carolina. Six of the 2012 commits have 4 stars from Rivals

OGV,

That is fair enough. But there is no lockstep here. I see the signs of a great coach that has a firm grip on building something special.
Kids are responding, potheads notwithstanding.

No doubt, what happens on the field will be the real test. And with our curent QB questions, there is cause for concern. Conservative game planning and fierce D will have to rule the day.

However, after so many years of mediocrity, why not be optimistic? You can see aspects of Coach Golden's approach and direction to date that are likely to predict future success.

In the meantime, let's get out to Sunlife and support these guys!

Golden is golden, no doubt about that. Realized it the moment he said "why MIAMI? Are you freaking kidding me?" If this guy was an army general, I would return to duty asap. We know he can recruit and coach, but his greatest skill in my opinion, is his ability to make you believe whatever he says, no matter how skeptical you may have been. The guy is unbelievable. This hire is much better than if Gruden was hired.

ucrazy2 you are crazy

OGV, it's simple logic really. Yea they haven't hit the field yet, but...

When you go from practicing something only 1 hour a day to 3 hours a day, doesn't it logically make sense you'll be better at it?

Going from one camp to multiple camps, doesn't it seem that is better for exposure purposes especially when in this camp those kids are getting their arses handed to them?

Golden Age is here Urban renewal is past history

Morris is not going anywhere anytime soon... anyone that pushes for it is idiotic and is a prime example of someone who is naive and uninformed... Morris gets a free pass until... well, until HE feels he shouldn't anymore... period the end!

Can anybody explain to me what the beef is with Warren Sapp and Al Golden is ? Thanks.

Sapp is mad because he was on campus and Al Golden didn't stop by to worship him.

Golden was probably doing something crazy....liking coaching.

Recruiting rankings are a joke.

If they meant anything Willie Williams and Arthur Brown would already be in the Ring of Honor.

That Sapp thing seems odd. Why would U not want Sapp around somebody like Fortson, and the team generally? Here we go agin, one step forward but several back. It just seems odd.....But I guarantee U, if benny Blades is anywhere near the practice field, Telemaque has a All-America year...

037- You may be right that Morris aint going anywhere. But that proves that this University is no longer interested in winning championships in men's baseball.

Explain to me, Mr apologist, why he is getting a pass?

2001-2010- NOTHING

While Shannon had 5 yrs and BOOM fired
Coker had a NC and played for another and BOOM fired.

Morris is a pathetic coach. He is a has been. A stale, lame, old monolithic unimaginative, stubborn ol fool.

UM will NEVER. Mark my words. NEVER. Go back to the CWS with Morris as HC. Not while UF and FSU are out recruiting and outcoaching Miami year after year. Because the road to Omaha goes through Gainesville now. I hate it. Believe me because I hat the gators with a passion, but they've had a better team for the last few yrs. So has FSU. Miami is knee deep in mediocrity.

Football on the other hand is different, because I believe Golden will rectify things

I hope golden does bring us back. I like the feel good stories about his hardworking affordable camps and his recruiting. none of that was our problem. We had poor play calling and poor game management. We will see how that turns out in september.

ucrazy 2,

You are right on the mark about Coach Golden!

We shall see on the field, since that is the
ultimate way of evaluating him and the program.

For now, things look pretty good.

'Cool 'Cat....

Sapp is not the most stable dude....great player, but not sure I would want him around.

The camps are good for the school and strengths relationships with local talent and coaches..How can coaching a possible recruit be a bad thing?..Golden has done a lot of positive things but yea gotta PROVE IT ON THE FIELD!!! GO CANES!!!

This coach has already exceeded RS on the recruiting front. RS was the 3-star king that robbed USF, FIU, and FAU of loads of talent. Looks like AG can match-up with FSU, UF, and the SEC.

LMFAO...I remember when Randy first started out as coach, a similar article came out on the Brown Kid from Kansas. Everybody started writing the same thing as in this post. People, please RELAX....Has we all learned it's all about how you teach, coach, and develop these kids. How many #1 draft picks did the Golden Shower send to the Pro's? Yeah, 1. So before you all start saying were back, again for the 2nd time "Shut your mouth and keep whinning like litle girls"-Sir Charles

P.S. Navarro, I saw you this weekend at the Kyojin Buffet on U.S-1 and Sunset, boyyyyyyy you love to eat.

THE COMPETITION BEING CREATED BY THE GOLDEN CAMPS FOR $250,000 SCHOLLIES IS JUST A BEAUTIFUL THING TO SEE. Those that go to Nole or Gaturd camps are competing for $10,000 per year schollies: not quite the same.
The Golden era has arrived.

i like this

Golden has done everything right since he stepped foot on this campus! He has been up front and is not a liar. He tells it like it is. The QB competition is still up for grabs and he pulls no punches. Sure RS was a pure Cane, but I have to say the Golden Age of the Canes has started!! He is getting commits left and right. We are talking real deal guys who want to play and play hard, not some kid who is hyped up b/c he played against garbage H.S. teams. We are getting real deal kids who come form schools where the back ups would start at other schools!!

He is not getting any blue chippers. he is getting a lot of guys that no one else wants.
