Preston Dewey, who plays for former Heisman winner Ty Detmer, latest QB to commit to Canes (w/video)

The 2012 quarterback competition at the University of Miami got a little more interesting Friday.

Preston Dewey Preston Dewey, a 6-3, 205-pound senior-to-be from Austin, Texas, became the third (and potentially last) quarterback to join the the Hurricanes' upcoming signing class when he called Hurricanes coaches to let them know he was committing to the school.

Dewey, who is coached in high school by former Heisman winner Ty Detmer, participated in a camp at UM over the weekend and shined at the TCU Elite 11 competition earlier in the spring. He joins Gray Crow and David Thompson as quarterbacks headed to the program. Both Dewey and Crow are expected to enroll in January.

The 11th overall commitment for the Hurricanes class of 2012, Dewey threw for over 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

Kid looks the part.

This class is going to be awesome

I. Love. Al. Golden. GO CANES!

Wow...nice highlights. Great arm.

You all can thank me later.

Be sure of this....all of you Gator fans, especially in N.Fla where I've heard it for years...watch out ~~~~ this Miami team will change this year .... you've heard it first National Champions 2012 !!!!!!

Just spoke with Gator fan....what ??? The Canes will be good this year...oh, they have a new coach ??? That won't know what hit them...Gator nation (only if they have the ..... to play us). GO CANES !!!!!

I would say that this young man has a future in football. Almost every ball he threw and was caught the receiver had YAC. He wasn't trying for to much. I would have liked to have seen a few plays were he had to throw it away though.

Why wasn't he offered by UT or Oklahoma?

They were about to offer. It is great to FINALLY have a pro style QB with quick feet and outstanding feel for when to elude blitzers. I also love the way he looks downfield and doesn't stare down a receiver. Great get.

A few things jump out from these videos...the ball is wobbling on all the throws, all the competition consists of white boys, and all the players on his team are white except the running back. I wonder if Dewey is a private school star that faces only JV quality opposition.

No EL Huracan he hasn't faced the Gayturd defense yet.

dude is a BEAST. just needs to tighten up his release. very much reminds me of blaine gabbert.

Great pickup. Kid has size, solid arm and can be molded in to a great QB. How many of you were big fans of Gino, Vinny or Ken Dorsey before they came to The U? Let the coaches do the job they were hired for, I have 100% faith in Coach Golden and the rest of the coaches. Clearing out the under achievers and problems and replacing with heart. There is a reason we have not been winning, let him fix it and continue to support this effort. Class is coming along great so far.

Can't wait for the play-by-play guys to say on TV, "OH MY, WHAT A DAY FOR DEWEY!"

If you start for three years in Detmer's offense, you will:

a) Have great mechanics
b) Understand progressions
c) Run the ballclub

Something sorely missed since Dorsey...

Wow... Did somebody actually mention Miami as national champions in 2012... Seriously quit drinking and making the Kool-aid.

Last Year the defense let us down at least one game that I recall. USF. There are other games that our defense could have made some stops but fell short, and that was with Brandon Harris and Allen Bailey.

Then the is the four year long problems at quarterback and i don't see one summer braking up all the years of terrible play from this position. It's not like Jacory will morph and throw 30+ touchdowns and less than 10 interceptions. He is more worried about gaining as much weight as he can in the gym than studying film. I can't fault him for his commitment to the gym seeing how skinny he was coming out of high school.

I say realistically in 3 or 4 years we will win a national title but not this year. I expect us to get at least 9 wins or 11 at most. Big drop off next year to a 8 win season to a big but steady jump the year after. I do expect Al Golden to make Miami a 10 win team year in year out in his third season as coach but not the first year and definitely not the second year.

The kid has potential. He looks like a pretty good high school QB. He has to develop more, and he probably will.

is the 6' 3'' for real?

More competition instead of just giving it to someone--gotta love that..GO CANES!!!

Nice pickup. Welcome to the Canes family. Preston.

He kas good mobility, size and throws well on the run. He has touch as well.

Anybody else detect shades of Bernie Kosar with the slightly sidearem release?

Go Canes!

nice pick up, now we need a safety or 2 and a couple defensive tackles. we could lose both safeties to the nfl and as many as 7 def linemen. if the D have a good year. just saying

if the guy is Detmers guy then thats enough for me. Ty was one of the smartest Qb's ever in football even though I hated the guy in 1990. I love the pick up to Golden's next class.

If he makes decisions well and is a good leader thats all we need of him. I like his coaches pedigree.

Kid looks good passing on the run, arm strength looks suspect, then again it's only a junior highlight, but dang he's bigger than most of his OL.

Accuracy's pretty good, i wonder what he can do with a solid line, he's always on the run on this highlight film.

oye gordito, deja de borrar my post. A mi me gusta los Hurracanes.
